MMS won't send when connected to wifi - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Anyone else having this problem? When I go to send a picture message it won't send if I'm connected to wifi. It just says "sending..." until I cancel it and connect to the mobile network (Verizon btw)

Mine still works when on wifi. Make sure you have mobile data enabled.

Did you resolve your problem?
I have the same issue...
I can send and receive mms, but not with wifi connected.
In the settings there is no "always send/receive mms" to select.
In GB there is a setting to always send/receive mms, that auto turns on mobile data, and the turns off mobile data when done.
Now I have to turn off the wifi, and then manually turn on mobile data.
If I don't do both of these the message just says sending but does not actually send.
Can anyone help?
Galaxy Nexus
AOKP Milestone 4

I'm pretty sure mms can't be sent via wifi and can only be sent via your mobile network/mms APN.

I had this for a while as well. One of the builds of AOKP eventually fixed it for me.

This is correct. But the phone is supposed to automatically switch back to the cell network and send the mms, then go back to wifi. Thats how my previous android phones work.

My last phone DHD, varoious roms from 2.2 to 2.3.7 would all (if connected to wifi) enable mobile data to send or receive MMS and then disable mobile data when finished. I would not have to manually swith anything on or off.
There is a setting to allways allow MMS that could be selected.
Now using AOKP milestone 4, Franco kernel Milestone 1, if wifi is connected I must manually switch it off, then manually enable mobile data to send or receive MMS.
If wifi and mobile data are both off, I must still enable mobile data before it eill send or receive.
My APN settings are ok as i can send and receive MMS, it just does not do it automatically.
I don't think its the rom either as i have the same issue with Code Name Droid.

it seems strange..in the stock sms app its checked the automatic receive (or something similar) under mms settings?
also do you have 2 apns, one with type default, and one with type mms?
do you have some apps that interfer with the activation of the mobile data? like juice defender or similar

Yes I have 2 APN's, a default mobile data and a MMS apn.
I use the stock message app which does have an auto retrieve setting to select and is selected.
but the always receive setting im talking about is in the Mobile network settings.
2.3.7 has the follow listed under "mobile network settings"
Data enabled
Always receive MMS
Data Roaming
Network type selection
Access point Names
Network Operators
4.0.3 AOKP has:
Data enabled
Data Roaming
Access Point Names
Use only 2G network
Network Operator
The "always receive MMS" setting is missing, I think this setting is responsible for doing it automatically.
I posted a couple of screen shots of the settings in both.

anyway searching around it seems a problem with a lot of stock android roms
the 2.3.7 screenshoot u posted its a custom rom..
seems (im not sure) the androd aosp roms in every nexus (nexus one and nexus s too) miss the option to always receive mms even on gingebread..so if u really want receice mms, u have to enable the mobile data..or probably look for a custom rom that have that option
by the way i think i sent one or two mms in my life not a big problem though

LOL
yeah I only send 1 a year my self...
Looks like i have to do it manually, won't be givin up AOKP for it.
Thanks for the help.

Are other people not seeing this? MMS might as well not be an option on my phone. Sometimes it kind of works, other times it out right does not work. WiFi on/off. Whatever. Super frustrating. I'd love to find some sort of hack. I've tried different radios, APNs, different images now, etc.. I'm an unlocked HSPA user on AT&T.

thanks for the info.
Since this feature is rom specific, anyone know which roms have it built in there ?
I'm on Eclipse 2.1, build 4 (4.1.2, Toro) it does not have this available.

I know this is old thread, but I've recently encountered this problem on rooted MMuzzy 4.2.1. When WiFi is on and someone sends me a MMS from an iPon, I get a "Download" button. I have Automatically DL set in the Messaging app. If I turn off WiFi, then it will download. Happens in both Handcent (set as the default app) and stock Messenger.

[Q] MMS and 4G?

Sorry if this has been asked/answered. I couldn't find a thread about it in my search.
My question is how to get MMS working over 4G?
If my 4G radio is on, MMS won't send or receive. I have to drop down to 3G to get either to go. Has anyone else experienced this, or know of a fix? Right now I'm running Myn's Warm 2.2 RLS2 rom, but I also had the same problem on Ava Froyo v9 so I'm thinking it's not a rom issue.
Thanks
That could be because 4G is more like Wifi than it is 3G, and you can't send MMS over Wifi. So whenever you want to send an mms, you gotta turn on your 3g, send, then turn it off. Or you can leave 3g, and go to your wireless and network settings and disable "3g always on." 3g should be inactive when you're using only 4g and then go active as soon as you begin sending an mms.

That would be awfully annoying, and a really large flaw in 4G if I have to turn off 4G every time I want to send or receive an MMS message.
I couldn't find that option you said, the only thing I could find that even sounded similar was under Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile Networks and it was called Enable always-on mobile data.
I turned that off and still couldn't send with my 4G radio on. Not sure if I have to reboot for the change to take effect or something, because I didn't do that.
bump. Still curious if this is by design or if there's something I can fix.

ah, thats what i meant "enable always-on mobile data." leave that enabled, then while you're on 4g and you send something through MMS, it will keep you connected on 4g, and activate your 3g at the same time, sending the MMS.
Edit: Sorry about my first post in this thread, i meant to say enable that option, not enable.

My only other thought is that 4G isn't official in my area yet, it's in testing I'm guessing since i pull a signal, but Sprint doesn't acknowledge there is $g here on their site.

Nope, I was using it that way on a plane back on Weds of last week. Tried to send an SMS text and it wouldn't let me. internet browsing was working fine.
I figure that's the only way you should use a cell phone on a plane, as just turning off mobile data doesn't disable the phone signal too.

4G is a advanced type of wifi
mms is sent through mobile data only, not 4g not wifi
when you are on wifi your 3g will randomly connect for mms updates/refresh, on 4g your 3g will do it too, it will be a concurrent connection with no visible connection
airplane mode shuts it down completely so if on wifi in airplane mode there are no mms

That's because SMS needs a mobile connection as it uses the physical cell network to send.
MMS, on the other hand, does not. MMS can be sent on another data source (wifi, etc..)

With your data off?
I too must disable 4g to send mms... I am on frost and flashed to another "senseless sense based Rom" both were using the aosp mms program, I wonder if thats the problem????

Verizon GN can't send MMS when Wifi enabled

I saw some other threads on this but no fixes.
Is there a fix?
Are you manually disabling your mobile data when on WiFi? When its auto-disabled as WiFi comes on, it should re-enable long enough to send MMS unless there's a bug.
No, definitely not disabling mobile data. I couldn't on Android Revolution and now can't on the stock rooted IMM76K.
That's really odd. The mobile data should kick on, send your mms, then go back to wifi. That's how mine does it.
Mine sends fine... My mobile data never even shows kicking in

Mine sends fine as well over WiFi.

Arc s pxts trouble

Hey guys, I'm on 2Degrees(which goes through Vodafone i think) in New Zealand, and I'm not on a data plan, just prepay.
I can't seem to send pxt's unless I enable 'data roaming' and 'mobile networks', which if I'm correct uses data and eats my prepay time.
I just get a 'Could not send. Message will be sent when service becomes available' error
My mate has the exact same setup with his sensation, and can send/receive pxt's without enabling any mobile networks or data roaming, when he sends or receive a pxt, his '3g' symbol pops up and the pxt sends.
So my question is, is there something I need to do to be able to send and receive pxt's without having to use mobile data and eating into my prepay money, because I know this is possible, just not sure why it's not working on this phone.
I've attached some pics of my apn settings, from what I can tell they are all correct...
Thanks for your help!

Did some research on Google...
PXT requires MMS to be used, MMS requires 3G internet in order to send the stuff. All the photos/audio files and stuff can only be sent over Internet. There is no other way.
You need to have MMS settings in your phone. Data roaming is not required at all. MMS downloading will not eat your money for data, as MMS settings are used for it. MMS settings don't allow you to surf on the internet, these settings are only for sending and receiving MMS.

That makes sense to a degree,
So i need internet access to be able to send MMS?, which means I need to enable mobile networks and data roaming(since I'm not on a data plan I have to enable these or I can't get internet access, therefore no MMS).
But what your saying is even though I enable internet access, the MMS side of it doesn't actually eat into the data, since it's sent a different way, visa vie, it doesn't eat my pre paid moneys...
I just wonder if there is a way to only get data turned on when it's needed for MMS, other wise all my apps are constantly updating and eating my credit...

MMS will use the data itself when it is needed. Mobile networks doesn't have to be turned on, it is only needed if you want to surf on the internet.. Data Roaming is only used if you want to use your phone's internet in another country(which is f**king expensive).
I received an MMS on my Arc S once, I didn't have internet settings on my phone, just MMS settings(APN stuff). I got an SMS, then used the download option. Data was turned on automatically, MMS was downloaded and data was turned off again. No charges for me.

That all makes total sense, my only problem is, I can't send or receive pxts unless i enable both mobile networks and data roaming, I've literally tested it in all ways i can, and it wont work unless they are both enabled.

[Q] Galaxy Nexus loses data after received MMS...

After a few weeks from the original post, I'm still having problems with data connection. In the meantime, I have completely wiped my phone and reinstalled stock Jelly Bean from Google. But the problem remains. But I noticed that, when I receive an MMS and my signal bars become grayed out without moving arrows, I can still receive and send MMS. Isn't data connection necessary for that? I can't do anything else that requires it, though.
Do you think that the problem may be with APN settings? I have set everything like my carrier provided.
Any idea? I really don't want to root my phone in order to fix this. But I guess only that will help?
Quick recap: Nexus 4.1.1 JB, loses data connection after receved MMS, can still send/receive MMS but nothing else. Phone restart required in order to fix the problem.
Just bumping this tread if somebody maybe knows anything about my problem.
Here's my theory:
Since the MMS and data APN are separate, when you sent a MMS, the APN switches from mobile data to MMS, therefore you lose your data connection.

Thank you! That's seems like a logical explanation. But, since I'm not yet experienced on this area, do you have any idea how can I solve this issue?
Try merging both APNs, pull the MMSC and port to your data APN, then add mms to the apn type.

Was having the same issue and solution (use HTC's native messaging app). I just tried the fix that nycebo suggested and it worked. BUT, sending a pic was pretty slow. So slow that I thought it was going to fail (same symptom as when it was failing to send). Eventually it went thru and I'm also able to receive pics.
Hopefully, this resolves group messaging which is basically MMS as well.

As I mentioned earlier, group texts are handled as MMS's. Last night the M8 was put to the test. Had an issue come where the wi-fi was partially to blame. Group text consisted of 6 people with a sprinkling of pics attached. Some of their texts and pics were getting thru while some weren't. I was on wi-fi and there is a 4-5 bar LTE signal in my area. Wi-fi calling is set to cellular preferred. Not only did some of the texts not come thru but the ones that didn't were also separated out from the group thread. I hit the download link and nothing. No error message. Nothing. Just went back to "Download message". Granted this was on the locked APN. I switched to the custom APN. Still nothing.
This worked before so I try again. I turn off the wi-fi. BAM. All the texts of the separated out people start coming thru AND they get put back into the thread.
So yes, the culprit is wi-fi but I've had wi-fi on on my Note 3 and this was never an issue. Also, in the middle of the group texts, I swap the sim into my Nexus 5 using Hangouts with wi-fi enabled and there was no problem there.
I think the root cause is the way HTC's Android implementation is handling the switching between wi-fi and the carrier network. Seems to me the message should try sending via wi-fi and if that doesn't work use carrier network. I don't know enough about the protocol to say this is for sure the case but that seems to be a logical explanation.

Curious if this is still a problem.
I am getting a GPE this week, but I need to be on wifi only at work all day and get MMS/group MMS
GPE doesnt have the option to use stock messaging (I assume Hangouts only, which I have seen has known issues MMS via wifi)
Will I be able to get MMS/group messaging on wifi only (wifi calling enabled) ?
Use Textra until Hangouts gets this working ?
