[Q] MMS and 4G? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry if this has been asked/answered. I couldn't find a thread about it in my search.
My question is how to get MMS working over 4G?
If my 4G radio is on, MMS won't send or receive. I have to drop down to 3G to get either to go. Has anyone else experienced this, or know of a fix? Right now I'm running Myn's Warm 2.2 RLS2 rom, but I also had the same problem on Ava Froyo v9 so I'm thinking it's not a rom issue.
Thanks

That could be because 4G is more like Wifi than it is 3G, and you can't send MMS over Wifi. So whenever you want to send an mms, you gotta turn on your 3g, send, then turn it off. Or you can leave 3g, and go to your wireless and network settings and disable "3g always on." 3g should be inactive when you're using only 4g and then go active as soon as you begin sending an mms.

That would be awfully annoying, and a really large flaw in 4G if I have to turn off 4G every time I want to send or receive an MMS message.
I couldn't find that option you said, the only thing I could find that even sounded similar was under Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile Networks and it was called Enable always-on mobile data.
I turned that off and still couldn't send with my 4G radio on. Not sure if I have to reboot for the change to take effect or something, because I didn't do that.

bump. Still curious if this is by design or if there's something I can fix.

ah, thats what i meant "enable always-on mobile data." leave that enabled, then while you're on 4g and you send something through MMS, it will keep you connected on 4g, and activate your 3g at the same time, sending the MMS.
Edit: Sorry about my first post in this thread, i meant to say enable that option, not enable.

I'm talking about 4G, not wifi.

My only other thought is that 4G isn't official in my area yet, it's in testing I'm guessing since i pull a signal, but Sprint doesn't acknowledge there is $g here on their site.

Nope, I was using it that way on a plane back on Weds of last week. Tried to send an SMS text and it wouldn't let me. internet browsing was working fine.
I figure that's the only way you should use a cell phone on a plane, as just turning off mobile data doesn't disable the phone signal too.

4G is a advanced type of wifi

mms is sent through mobile data only, not 4g not wifi
when you are on wifi your 3g will randomly connect for mms updates/refresh, on 4g your 3g will do it too, it will be a concurrent connection with no visible connection
airplane mode shuts it down completely so if on wifi in airplane mode there are no mms

That's because SMS needs a mobile connection as it uses the physical cell network to send.
MMS, on the other hand, does not. MMS can be sent on another data source (wifi, etc..)

Curious then, as my MMS messages won't send if I have my 4G radio on, but SMS will.
Didn't try MMS when I was on the plane and just on wifi..

anyone can receive/send MMS while WIFI on?

im in nyc currently running OMJ 2.2 v3.0 rom with Stock kernel. But my issue has been happening since before I rooted my evo. The problem is I cant receive MMS during wifi is switched on then have to switch wifi off and wait about 20 minutes in order for the mms to download so I can view it. I called tier1 and 2 and tier 1 just made me factory reset my phone or clear cache on the mms app in settings which fixes it for about 2 minutes before I turn wifi on again. Tier 2 told me that theres no way I can receive and send mms while wifi is on so there goes my issue...I never had this issue with my apache, mogul, diamond, tp, tp2, BB bold.
The error msg I get is a transient error failure...please can anyone test their device and turn wifi on and try to receive and send MMS and let me know if its successful so I can send this to sprint b/c its totally oblivious I have to turn wifi off and wait 20 minutes and then have my mms download w/o errors.
Thanks in advance

My texts go through with WiFi on.....no problems. I probably send 50 texts a day while connected to WiFi; if not more.
Currently MMS uses your data only. You will notice that when sending MMS your 1x/3G icon shows up next to your wifi icon.

MMS over WiFi

searched the whole site and couldn't find an answer, so here's hoping.
I can't seem to get a straight answer whether this is normal or not. But when I'm on 3g or 4g on my White Evo HW 0003 running Myns I receive MMS perfectly fine.
If I'm on WiFi and receive an MMS it'll say downloading and end up failing, if I kill the wifi connection it downloads the photo right away.
My wife has a stock Evo with no root or rom, and the latest build just like me . 3.30.651.3 and the same happens on hers. Only difference is, while on wifi she'll eventually (after about 20 minutes) receive the picture sent.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
there is no mms over wifi, it will turn on the 3g to download it even with wifi running and wont tell you. if you had mobile networking turned off and only ran wifi you wouldnt even get a text

Really,
So the reason it worked in the past is because it would do it when it wanted? Well that's great
I'd question that one further.
I am only on 1x at home (airave) and WiFi. I've always had a problem getting picture/ MMS while on the airave+WiFi combo until recently. Now I am able to download and receive pictures from WiFi it seems.

MMS not working on wifi calling

Ok so I flashed the deodexed (Whitehawkx version) stock rooted T-Mobile update with wificalling. I was super excited for it to be released blah, blah, blah then I went to send an mms. No go. Just hung. So I figured it must be because I'm on a deodexed rooted rom. I asked friend (thanks doc) who had just updated using the T-Mobile method to tey sending an mms while on wificalling. No dice. I'm wondering how many of us have this problem. It seems to be a T-Mobile issue, but I'm no dev. Just a big fan.
Thanks

It seems to work for me but it takes forever to send the images/media - unless the phone finally decided to use edge to sent the message while still connected to wifi calling. Though, I assumed once it's connected to wifi calling, it only uses wifi. Can anyone confirm this?

I can't answer that for sure. Hmm maybe I don't give it enough time, for me and doc it doesn't send until right after we disconnect from wifi. Thanks for the feedback.

This is a problem with the Wifi calling feature. It disables MMS and does this on multiple phones. I had this same problem on my Mytouch 4g as well.
There is a response from a Tmobile employee on the Tmobile support boards for wifi calling and the G2 which says http://support.t-mobile.com/message/4487.
This is normal. WiFi Calling registers through your wifi and disables the mobile networks to do so. Some T-Mobile apps have the ability to temporarily force a GPRS connection to verify you. The only away to avoid this is to disable or turn off WiFi Calling.
This is also why calls drop when leaving your wifi network's signal range. It needs to disconnect and re-register on the T-Mobile network.

i have a gs2 in one hand and a mt4g in the other. wifi calling on on both. the gs2 sends instantly without ever connecting to data, the mt4g connects to data and takes ~10 seconds to send. maybe depends on things like your router or something.

You need to remember that the firewall settings are different from place to place. As an example I use a Cisco router at home and WiFi calling will connect but I could not hear the person on the other end initially. I had to look at what the router was doing, figure out what the firewall was blocking and unblock it.
It's likely the firewall at your work is letting some, but not all of the necessary traffic through. You could ask the IT guys if they can look and see what their firewall is blocking from your phone and ask them if they'll unblock it... They may or may not want to help and they may use the information to completely block your phone from being able to connect to the tmobile servers on the other side.

Is it me...

Hey is is me, or did we use to be able to send MMS while connected to WiFi and in a call?
I swear that I use to be able to send pictures while connected to to my home wireless and being on the phone until EL29 came out. I use that function a lot, but I'm starting to question myself. I've flashed multiple ROMs to make sure I was just going crazy, but it seems that every EL29 ROM I flash the MMS just says sending until I get off the phone. Then after that my 3G icon pops up with the WiFi icon still there, then the picture gets sent. I SWEAR it didn't use to be like that.
I still can send mms when on a call
I am pretty sure that I can as well. Ill have to try tomorrow and let you know for sure.
oh man. geeze. please let me know. I wanna find out what's going on
im not sure about the phone call part,
but even if your on wifi the phone still turns on 3g to authenticate thru sprints picmail servers before sending it
I can answer this one. If your on 3g and on a call, no you can't send mms. When you're on a call it knocks off your 3g to make the call. Now if you're on 4g, then you can send mms because you still have your 4g connection running. Another thing I would like to add is back when the first Evo and Epic came out, sending mms wasn't supported over 4g till Sprint made some changes on how sending mms works on their network. However one thing I haven't tried is to see if I can send mms thru just wifi with 4g and 3g off. It has me a lil curious because I know it didn't back then but they might had changed that when they changed it to allow sending thru 4g. But it could also just work on their networks only so idk..
Edit: I just put my E4gT on hotspot mode and disabled network data on a Sprint iPhone and Evo3D, both failed at sending. Soon as I enabled their data back the messages got sent. So you still can't send mms over wifi it relies on falling back to 3g. The way I recall it is the 3g comes on to send the mms then drops once it sends, but since you're on a call it won't do that.. Hope that helps lol

right, uses 3g/4g to authenticate thru picmail servers, wont do that on wifi itself. no sprint connection=no picturemail.
Connect to wifi and send a picture (while you have a signal) and you will still see the 3g icon come on for a few seconds while it sends.
That's really weird though. I really use to be able to send mms while on the phone on wifi. I swear that changed on EL29. but oh well maybe i'm just tripping out

I CAN send pictures while on the phone and connected to WiFi. the 3G icon doesnt pop up. it just sends. I knew I wasn't trippin. This function seems to have gotten lost among all the modding or something. But yea on a stock ROM, you can hold a conversation and send a picture...you just cant take the picture while in call. but yeah.

Mine still works when on wifi. Make sure you have mobile data enabled.
Did you resolve your problem?
I have the same issue...
I can send and receive mms, but not with wifi connected.
In the settings there is no "always send/receive mms" to select.
In GB there is a setting to always send/receive mms, that auto turns on mobile data, and the turns off mobile data when done.
Now I have to turn off the wifi, and then manually turn on mobile data.
If I don't do both of these the message just says sending but does not actually send.
Can anyone help?

I'm pretty sure mms can't be sent via wifi and can only be sent via your mobile network/mms APN.
I had this for a while as well. One of the builds of AOKP eventually fixed it for me.

This is correct. But the phone is supposed to automatically switch back to the cell network and send the mms, then go back to wifi. Thats how my previous android phones work.
My last phone DHD, varoious roms from 2.2 to 2.3.7 would all (if connected to wifi) enable mobile data to send or receive MMS and then disable mobile data when finished. I would not have to manually swith anything on or off.
There is a setting to allways allow MMS that could be selected.
Now using AOKP milestone 4, Franco kernel Milestone 1, if wifi is connected I must manually switch it off, then manually enable mobile data to send or receive MMS.
If wifi and mobile data are both off, I must still enable mobile data before it eill send or receive.
My APN settings are ok as i can send and receive MMS, it just does not do it automatically.
I don't think its the rom either as i have the same issue with Code Name Droid.
it seems strange..in the stock sms app its checked the automatic receive (or something similar) under mms settings?
also do you have 2 apns, one with type default, and one with type mms?
do you have some apps that interfer with the activation of the mobile data? like juice defender or similar
Yes I have 2 APN's, a default mobile data and a MMS apn.
I use the stock message app which does have an auto retrieve setting to select and is selected.
but the always receive setting im talking about is in the Mobile network settings.
2.3.7 has the follow listed under "mobile network settings"
Data enabled
Always receive MMS
Data Roaming
Network type selection
Access point Names
Network Operators
4.0.3 AOKP has:
Data enabled
Data Roaming
Access Point Names
Use only 2G network
Network Operator
The "always receive MMS" setting is missing, I think this setting is responsible for doing it automatically.
I posted a couple of screen shots of the settings in both.
anyway searching around it seems a problem with a lot of stock android roms
the 2.3.7 screenshoot u posted its a custom rom..
seems (im not sure) the androd aosp roms in every nexus (nexus one and nexus s too) miss the option to always receive mms even on gingebread..so if u really want receice mms, u have to enable the mobile data..or probably look for a custom rom that have that option
by the way i think i sent one or two mms in my life not a big problem though
LOL
yeah I only send 1 a year my self...
Looks like i have to do it manually, won't be givin up AOKP for it.
Thanks for the help.
Are other people not seeing this? MMS might as well not be an option on my phone. Sometimes it kind of works, other times it out right does not work. WiFi on/off. Whatever. Super frustrating. I'd love to find some sort of hack. I've tried different radios, APNs, different images now, etc.. I'm an unlocked HSPA user on AT&T.

I know this is old thread, but I've recently encountered this problem on rooted MMuzzy 4.2.1. When WiFi is on and someone sends me a MMS from an iPon, I get a "Download" button. I have Automatically DL set in the Messaging app. If I turn off WiFi, then it will download. Happens in both Handcent (set as the default app) and stock Messenger.
