Is there any way to use NTFS for SD cards? - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

I had an micro sd card with NTFS, and my Pixel XL couldn't read it. So I used the phone to format it to.... guess what? Fat-freaking-32.
Pixel formats cards to Fat32? This is painful.
Is there a way to make Pixel recognize NTFS of exFAT? Can Pixel not read files larger than 4GB?
What am I missing?

You could use Total Commander and their seperate plugin for ntfs. Its in the play store.

I think I read somewhere that NTFS is owned by Microsoft and Google declined to pay the necessary royalties to Microsoft for the ability to include NTFS support in the Pixel OS

Are you saying that while the Android OS 7.1.1 couldn't recognize the sd card, an app called Total Commander could do it?

Ok, how do I copy and read a 4+GB file in a Pixel XL? With an SD/XD Micro card, with an adapter?
Here's the info on the adapter... (I don't know why everyone isn't using it...)

I believe that it will, but have never tried it. That app plugs into the API of the software and reads the card directly for you. But anything you do would be done via Total Commander, which is a file manager, so copying and so on.

So, you are saying that I should reformat my card to back NTFS or exFAT, then copy all of my files (100+GB = over an hour), then try to use this in my Pixel XL (which already rejected it once), with a new untested app called Total Commander, in hopes that it can read the sd card, which the OS cannot?
With no evidence whatsoever - when you yourself said - "I believe that it will, but have never tried it.".........................
Could you please give me some more encouraging facts? Something to motivate me to spend multiple hours on this endeavor?
Do you see where your post makes ZERO sense?

By that logic, you posting this thread make ZERO sense. If you didn't want to go back to NTFS or exFAT why did you ask the question. Which I answered in a polite and helpful manner. And yes, I linked you to some people that had success.

I just read the link you posted - sorry, didn't have the time to go through it yesterday.
This one guy said that you could do it with Total Commander and a Paragon File System plugin.
I guess I could try it. But it's cumbersome as hell - I'd have to copy multi-GB files to internal storage before I could play them in MX Player. Is that right?
As a side note, so Google just can't afford and NTFS or exFAT license. Nice!
Just one more frustrating thing about this phone. Sigh.

That's nice but without the model of the phone that information is useless.
Some manufacturers pay the royalty and install the driver in their phones OS.
Most don't, though some Chinese manufacturers put the driver in anyway.

What filesystem should I format my 32GB microsd card to?

So I got a great deal on a class 10 32GB Samsung card, it came pre-formatted to fat32, however I had the wild idea that android supported NTFS based on something I read in the past so I formatted it to NTFS on a windows system and copied some files over (some being over 5GB each)...plugged in my card and turned on my phone and I get a message saying my card is blank or the wrong file format...guess it doesn't support NTFS
I know if I use the phones built in format utility it will format to fat32 which I don't really want because of the filesize limitation, I'd like to be able to copy 8-10GB files every so often so I can use my phone as a little shuttle drive in between places...
But I also want the ability for windows to be able to read my sd card if I change my phone into USB mode so I think that excludes the ext3, ext4 format which I think android will read...
Any ideas?

The reason the op doesn't want fat32 is because he has single files that exceeds 4 GB that he wants to transfer, so fat32 would not work for him.

format it ext3/4 and then install an ftp server app on your phone.
There is an app that works fine
I have exactly the same problem. I want to have the sdcard in NTFS so then I do not have the 4GB limitation of FAT32. The is possible to have .mkv files on your phone or tablet.
In the case of my table the N8010, I have formatted the sd card on Windows with NTFS. Then installed the "paragon" app from market which works very good. It recognized the sd card in NTFS and mount perfectly. But it seems that when your card is overloaded with thounsands of files and some big 6GB file, then comes the problem. Android JB everytime that comes out of sleep, it will check for errors the sd card. Everytime! Then, I get the message "sd card checking for errors" and never gets back. The sd card is not recognized anymore until I reboot the device.
I think that the paragon app is not perfect and might have bugs, but
Is there any way to disable the "sd card check for error" functionality? Have read some threads about it, to delete some file from system, but that method produces inconsistencies with other apps.
By the way, I have tried to format on ExFat, and had the same problem. When the card is almost full it will never end up checking for errors. I finally broke the sd card when I formated it with ExFat and 64k allocation size. It was not regoznized neither by windows and android afterwards
thanks

I don't think you broke it unless you fried the flash chips. You can try using the disk manager in windows and try to see if it sees it. Or just learn how to use Linux command line tools and fix it that way. I recovered 80% of my pictures off of a dead SD card using dd and a file recovery utility. I don't recall which one. That 16GB SD card now works just fine as a 12GB card. I don't trust it for any more than shuttling between systems though.
Also, I've never had good luck with exFAT. I much prefer the EXT filesystems, but they aren't natively supported in windows or most cameras. Maybe try NTFS without journaling (If that's even possible)

exfat is proprietary windows and needs licenses. android won't support it.
ntfs is a journaling file system and will impact performance if you can get android to read it.
ext2/3 is the best solution. there are utilities you can install so windows can read it.

Use the Windows drive manager to delete the partition on the MicroSD, do not reformat it with windows, plug it into the phone, and attempt to mount, it should do so but with 0 space now. Format it with the phone. Or look for the tool "fat32format" on the internet (Google is your friend) in order to force a format in FAT32.

You can have all your mp3's, videos, movies, pictures and documents plus backups of the rom and new roms or other
stuff but you just cannot use it to install apps until one of the devs finds a way to create a compatible app which will allow
for app installation on external sd.
Something similar to the apps2sd app which is not compatible with the S4.
Perhaps the developer of that app will upgrade it making it compatible with our phones.

Google it and look it up,
Ever since windows xp fat32 was always the default when formatting usb flash drives(memory sticks) and sdcards.
Right now I am running windows 8 but I ran all the other prior versions of windows including windows xp.
When formatting hard drives, even external usb hard drives then windows (all versions) default to NTFS.
I never seen any versions of windows operating systems defaulting to exFAT.

Well not in that sense but let's say if you would like to play a video or a song you have saved in your 64GB card. Does it still play it right away or have you experienced any slow downs? Someone who i know that works closely with phones informed me that it slows down the phone when loading files such as mp3 files or video files. Thanks dude.

Question about External SD card visability

I also posted this in the Tmobile specific thread, so I apologize if you are seeing this twice. Not sure where stuff like this should go when there are "multiple" sections for the same phone.
I am total stock, not rooted yet, waiting for the 2.22 firmware update from TMO.
I have a 64 gig sd card in the phone, and, in apps like root explorer, I can see the card, and all the files I put on it.
I also have been able to move a few programs to the external card, at least partially.
but, in some programs, when I try to save a file to the external sd, or, sometimes when I try to open a file on the external sd, the card does not show up in the path. I have some movies on the card, and when I open BS Player, it doesn't show the external sd card at all.
I think I read that rooting the phone will fix this, but I am not sure if just rooting fixes this, or if you have to do something else to make it show up all the time.
I know there have been issues trying to write and save files directly to the external sd, but I think this is something different.
Thanks in advance!

You are correct, in that the new Google policies under KitKat only affect write permissions. This shouldn't affect the ability of apps to read the card. I think there is something else going on. How is the card formatted? Is it new, where did you buy it?
I've seen other folks have random issue with the M8 not reading the card (even when it works with other devices) and re-formatting on computer fixed it up.

FAT32 is probably the most universal (was probably formatted that way out of the box). exFAT is supported, and some folks like it since it supports large file sizes (>4GB). But I never use files of that size, so it doesn't matter to me. Just my feeling, FAT32 is the simplest and probably safest (most compatibility) way to go.
You an try to format on the phone. But the other guy I saw that had issues, formatted the card on the phone, still didn't work (but other devices still could read it) then he formatted on PC and it worked perfectly.
unfortunately, I had to just do exfat as well, since my win 8.1 computer, and my wifes win 7 only offered ex fat or ntfs; didn't want to try fat 32 on my sons Imac, just to avoid any mac to pc issues..

So did formatting exFAT help?
There are some good 3rd party Windows applications what will format to FAT32, if you still want to try. Thge other guy with a similar SD read issue used one such program to fix it, but I can't remember the name of the program. CNET and other websites have some reliable ratings, recommendations for such free software.

I think it did: i can see the external sd in more programs now, but not in all of them.
Possibly because not every program is coded to use an external sd card for storage or access to files.
Once the new firmware gets released by tmobile,(supposedly by the 18th) I will root, s-off, and unlock and see if that changes anything.

I had kind of the same issue on KitKat the card came new but for some reason it was not working fine.
On Win 7 or 8.1
Insert card and note the letter assigned
Start "RUN" with keys [Win-Logo]+[R] and type in »(Edit-Box) "diskmgmt.msc" and press [ENTER]
Select the drive letter for the card and do a right click > Delete Volume, accept the prompt
Then select again the drive and select New Simple Volume
Follow the wizard. Assign a letter. Sometimes you may not get the option of selecting FAT32 from here in some cards. If you don't get the option, select no format. Finish.
Remove card and insert it again, Windows will prompt to format the drive. Select FAT32
You should be done

Question Issue with Micro SD card with Pixel 6

Okay, I might need some input here on how to enable the phone to give permissions to write to the SD card. It goes into a loop after following the steps below in red. I've tried to go into the phones settings and app permissions to give it access and to no avail there. Am I at loss here or is there some way to give it permission?
I have tried installing File Manager apps with no avail. Is there any steps that I may have missed? Thanks!
I don't know if you're the same user who posted about this issue the other day in another thread, but:
I know I had that exact same issue at some point, but that was likely at least two months ago.
What firmware are you on? The early November, later November, or December firmware? Not sure if it's a factor but it might be.
What definitely solved it for me (but I'm not sure if a newer firmware was a factor) was ironically the fact that I have my MicroSD card formatted ExFAT, which the Pixels have never been able to read natively (Google would have to pay Microsoft royalties for including ExFAT support).
I finally paid for the full exFAT/NTFS for USB by Paragon Software app, and I use it through my preferred file manager X-plore File Manager. At least if you're using one of the filesystems that Paragon supports, the app mounts it and you can find a Paragon listing in the file manager with which you can access the contents.
If your MicroSD card is already formatted a way that the Pixel natively supports (FAT32, not sure what else), then this might not help you.
If you're on one of the November firmware versions, I would either manually update to the December firmware (third link in my signature below to get the files), if you're preferred area's December firmware is available there, or wait a couple of weeks for the late January update.
I don't recall if the Paragon app might have a trial, then you could try it anyway.

Thank you for the suggestion. I have the latest November update and the SD card was exfat formatted but upon inserting it via the adapter, the phone wanted to format it to FAT32 for it to recognize as portable storage. I was able to copy/move items to the SD card but not able to watch any videos with VLC; the phone doesn't recognize it while the exfat/ntfs app is installed. I had to uninstall for the phone to recognize it to play videos in the card. It seems I have to reinstall the app to move items from or into the card, using the app. Seems like a nuisance, but I am able to do the things that I wanted to do in the first place. Thanks!

It's optional if you want to go any further, but I am curious if you don't mind...
Which of the following two is accurate?
Did you reformat the card to FAT32?
or
Did you keep it in ExFAT?
Since you mentioned using the Paragon app, it makes it sound like you did keep the card in ExFAT format, since you shouldn't need the app if it's in FAT32 format.
To make sure I understand the rest correctly, you're saying:
Using the Paragon app I mentioned, you were able to copy or move files from the phone to the MicroSD card
You weren't able to watch videos from the MicroSD card
No matter which format you chose, it's confusing since you said, "The phone doesn't recognize it while the exfat/ntfs app is installed" but you also said, "It seems I have to reinstall the app to move items from or into the card". Those seem to be contradictory, but I'm guessing you just mean one of those in one circumstance and the second in the other circumstance.
I could potentially do similar tests with mine (in ExFAT), and with videos and VLC - I just want to make sure I understand exactly what the situation is.

Replying to which I've read in order:
1) The phone reformatted the card to FAT32 from it's previous state.
2) Yes and yes; the Paragon app allowed me to copy and move files to and from the SD card, where as the normal Files app doesn't allow me to.
3) I understand that it sounds contradictory but it is true, with the Paragon app installed, it overwrites the privileges to the Files app and also, VLC doesn't recognize the videos with the Paragon app installed. Hence why I said "reinstall the app to move items from or into (meant 'onto') the card."

Understood perfectly, and I absolutely believe you - I just wanted to make sure I didn't misunderstand anything.
Have you thought about trying X-Plore File Manager that I suggested, to see if you get any different experience (in combination with the Paragon app)?

Before I download that app, upon installing the Paragon app, it told me with the card being a FAT32, I needed to use the Total Commander file manager app for it to work

Hmmmmm. I thought I remembered it only suggesting you use Total Commander - not saying you needed to (but I wouldn't take their word for that anyway). You should be able to use any file explorer, reasonably speaking. If the next update fixes it for you (as mine has been fixed and working fine at least through X-Plore File Manager), then you won't even need the app except for using with the unsupported filesystems (ExFAT, I think maybe NTFS...).
Where the h3ll are you guys putting this microSD card in?????

Reread my second post.
Hello,
I've gt the same question.
I've reread Maxninja's second mail but this does not clear things up for me.
As far as I know the pixel (all of them) never supported external microsd cards, they do not have a slot for them..
So how come you are talking about a MicroSD card?

Thanks for clarifying

Almost any storage is supported externally (through the USB-C port) on any phone including the Pixel phones, although as I noted earlier in the thread, not all phones support all filesystem formats. For the Pixel as far as I know it has to be formatted in FAT32, Ext4, or you have to use the Paragon app I linked to. I'm not sure if there are other formats the Pixel supports natively. Prior to the Pixel 1, I would expect that all the Nexus phones supported through the Micro-USB port. There are all sorts of adapters and hubs, big and small, expensive and cheap, that would work for these purposes.

Question Connecting SSD drive

I have a SSD I format it in NTFS and plug it into the phone, it tells me that there is an issue with the drive.
So I format it with phone. Then plug it back into PC and it says it formatted it to Fat32, this makes it impossible to move any video to it.
My main idea was to use it for backup of pictures and video.

You done it in a wrong way. Sadly, Android devices don’t support NTFS format by default, you have to do it manually. Depends on whether your phone is rooted or not, it has different ways. Without root, use Total Commander to do it, with root, you get more choices. I didn't do it for a long time so can't tell just by memory. You can Google it and there should have a lot information you can get from the web for how to enable NTFS format in Android.
I am rooted, but have not seen a way to do it. Most say Total Commander or Paragon. Searched around web. Some of the threads are super old. And having issues finding ways to do it with Rooted device.
There is no Magisk modules anymore. Will keep looking.
format your ssd as exfat. works for both the computer and phone, and supports files over 4gb

That doesn't work.
From what I read , it seems Pixel 6 Pro does not support those formats. and you have to do work arounds to get it done.
Still working on those
Correct, Pixels never support ExFAT natively. There "may" be others way to use it on Pixels now, but I'm satisfied now that after all these years of having Pixel phones I bought the full Paragon deal: exFAT/NTFS for USB by Paragon Software. It's not ideal, but it works, and paying for the full deal gets me both ExFAT and NTFS (among other things that I probably don't care about).
I still use X-Plore File Manager to access the external storage through Paragon's app.
exFAT is natively supported on Android 13, at least for Pixel devices. I have a USB NVME drive that's formatted as exFAT and my Pixel 6 Pro running the latest Android 13 beta recognises it natively with full read/write access.

Oh yeah! Thanks for that reminder. I'm so looking forward to that native capability.

Did that program and it mounted it, but accessing is an issue. Not sure if I am doing it right,
For some reason it keeps asking to use total commander

I know it suggests Total Commander, but there's an option somewhere in there where I could get Paragon's access listed in X-Plore File Manager, which I prefer.
It's possible I didn't have to do anything special in the Paragon app - it's not too often I have to use it. It might have been just using X-Plore File Manager's ability to customize what mounted "drives" it listed, and adding Paragon from the list of available drives - after I already mounted the actual drive through the Paragon app.
I've partitioned my external SSD to 3, and only 1 is exFAT. The rest are NTFS.
In stock android 13 it is only able to read the exFAT partition.
To my surprise I noticed that in AncientOS (12L), it can read all in file manager. Don't know why though! didn't bother to read the features.
use exFAT supposed now with android 13 .
