Question about External SD card visability - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I also posted this in the Tmobile specific thread, so I apologize if you are seeing this twice. Not sure where stuff like this should go when there are "multiple" sections for the same phone.
I am total stock, not rooted yet, waiting for the 2.22 firmware update from TMO.
I have a 64 gig sd card in the phone, and, in apps like root explorer, I can see the card, and all the files I put on it.
I also have been able to move a few programs to the external card, at least partially.
but, in some programs, when I try to save a file to the external sd, or, sometimes when I try to open a file on the external sd, the card does not show up in the path. I have some movies on the card, and when I open BS Player, it doesn't show the external sd card at all.
I think I read that rooting the phone will fix this, but I am not sure if just rooting fixes this, or if you have to do something else to make it show up all the time.
I know there have been issues trying to write and save files directly to the external sd, but I think this is something different.
Thanks in advance!

You are correct, in that the new Google policies under KitKat only affect write permissions. This shouldn't affect the ability of apps to read the card. I think there is something else going on. How is the card formatted? Is it new, where did you buy it?
I've seen other folks have random issue with the M8 not reading the card (even when it works with other devices) and re-formatting on computer fixed it up.

its one I have used for at least a year, with no prob..I assume reformatting, to fat 32 would be best for use on this phone?
I dont remember if I re formatted before inserting yesterday; best to do it on a pc and not the phone itself?
thanks for your input!

FAT32 is probably the most universal (was probably formatted that way out of the box). exFAT is supported, and some folks like it since it supports large file sizes (>4GB). But I never use files of that size, so it doesn't matter to me. Just my feeling, FAT32 is the simplest and probably safest (most compatibility) way to go.
You an try to format on the phone. But the other guy I saw that had issues, formatted the card on the phone, still didn't work (but other devices still could read it) then he formatted on PC and it worked perfectly.

unfortunately, I had to just do exfat as well, since my win 8.1 computer, and my wifes win 7 only offered ex fat or ntfs; didn't want to try fat 32 on my sons Imac, just to avoid any mac to pc issues..

Hello, it is a mystery why in Total Commander can not see the normal view external SD card. Does anyone know what the problem is?

So did formatting exFAT help?
There are some good 3rd party Windows applications what will format to FAT32, if you still want to try. Thge other guy with a similar SD read issue used one such program to fix it, but I can't remember the name of the program. CNET and other websites have some reliable ratings, recommendations for such free software.

I think it did: i can see the external sd in more programs now, but not in all of them.
Possibly because not every program is coded to use an external sd card for storage or access to files.
Once the new firmware gets released by tmobile,(supposedly by the 18th) I will root, s-off, and unlock and see if that changes anything.
Thanks for your follow up:good:

MicroSD cards almost always come pre-formatted (usually FAT32) and I never use the formatting offered on the phone. I've seen reports of cards formatted on the phone not working right.
Use a computer and card reader to format the card.

did not help...

I had kind of the same issue on KitKat the card came new but for some reason it was not working fine.
On Win 7 or 8.1
Insert card and note the letter assigned
Start "RUN" with keys [Win-Logo]+[R] and type in »(Edit-Box) "diskmgmt.msc" and press [ENTER]
Select the drive letter for the card and do a right click > Delete Volume, accept the prompt
Then select again the drive and select New Simple Volume
Follow the wizard. Assign a letter. Sometimes you may not get the option of selecting FAT32 from here in some cards. If you don't get the option, select no format. Finish.
Remove card and insert it again, Windows will prompt to format the drive. Select FAT32
You should be done

microSD card corrupted...

I decided to replace the 512 MB card in my Cingular 8525 with a 2 GB card. When I put the 512 card in its adaptor, the PC read the directory, showed a FAT format, but would not copy/read/or otherwise manipulate any of the files. I plugged the card back into the 8525 and found that it couldn't even see it. Giving up on any kind of file recovery, I tried to reformat it in the PC, but then IT couldn't detect the card! After I played with it awhile, I finally got it to start the format process, but it always failed just before the "green line got to the end" and, after several attempts, it reported "disk cannot be formatted."
Is there any way I can save this card, or is it a (VERY small) boat anchor?
I've seen yesterday in the Sandisk site and somebody told me that they have some kind of software tool (file recover, unformat, etc.), that's very capable, unfortunately it is not free, there's a trial version (does not allow to save any files). Sofware's name is "Rescue Pro", if you can get yourself a copy you might give it a try.
Another thing about an SD (in my experience), I'm talking about a Verbatim 512MB SD, i borrow it to a friend, when he was giving it back, just cancelled all his things up, stopped the card reader (from XP), extracted the SD and it was dead, fortunately I had kept my proof of purchase and they (Verbatim) exchanged it with a new one (in europe the warranty is at least 2 year long), they asked me to send it to Ireland to check if it could be recovered and within three weeks (just because there was christmas in the middle) I got a new one back.
hope this helps
Try putting it in a Digital Camera with SD Slot (put in SD Adapter first;-))
Then format it via your Digital Camera
Or
Download VaioSoft Recovery Manager and try to format with that one

What PQI support suggests
I´ve had trouble with PQI miniSD cards, so I asked support from PQI on corrupted files, this is their answer in order to check if the card is damaged or not and includes several tips on using memory cards, it´s alittle bit long to read, but maybe it worths, so here it goes:
Some hints of using flash memory cards
1. Do NOT remove the memory card while it is operating, otherwise it may be
damaged.
2. Do NOT turn off the device, while the operation of writing /reading is
not completed.
3. When the battery power of system is low, do not write to the memory card to prevent loss of data.
4. Make sure the device (card reader/phone/camera/pda/camcorder) has finished reading/writing to the card before you take another shot/turn it off or the data will be corrupt/lost and the card will be damaged. You can tell by the device indicator light where it flashes when it is reading and writing to the card. Wait until the indicator light is off and stops flashing before you take another shot/turn the device off or remove the card/drive.
Before you continue, please make sure you have a reader that can read and write to 2GB card properly. DO NOT use in built-in reader on laptop and desktop, or old readers made 2 years or longer ago, because these readers can only use up to 1GB card. I recommend using it in external USB 2.0 reader that is made within 1 year ago.
If you do not have such reader, then connect the device (gps/camera/pda/camcorder) to the computer with USB cable and the card inserted and if works you should see new drive letters show up under My Computer.
Otherwise, if used in devices that do not support the 2GB card, the card will be damaged.
Please try the following troubleshooting guide first and see if it can solve the problem. Try one step at a time. If one works, then you can stop trying. You don't need to try all of them.
The following guide will erase all the data on the drive/card. So make sure you backup your data first before you try the steps below:
1. First, remove the card/drive from your computer.
Download the low level format tool below to your computer.
http://hddguru.com/download/software/HDDGURU-Low-Level-Format-Tool/LLFsetup.2.36.1181.exe
Install the program into your computer.
You should see a new icon called "Hard Disk Low Level Format Tool".
a. Insert the card/drive and run the program.
IMPORTANT!!! MAKE SURE YOU SELECT THE CORRECT DISK OR YOUR COMPUTER MAY NOT START LATER!!!
It should shows as BUS: USB. Select the BUS: USB. Also check the size and make sure.
If you don't see BUS: USB, that means the card is unreadable and need to be replaced. In this case, please STOP here and close the program and DO NOT continue below.
b. Then click Continue->Low Level Format->Format this Device.
c. Wait for a few minutes until it finish successfully with a message of asking you to partition and format it. (if you see formatting error, you can stop the formatting and the card needs to be replaced.)
d. Flash Card:
Put the card back to your device (camera/phone/pda/camcorder) and then use the format utility in the device to format the card.
Please let me know your test results. Thanks.
Reference: Program homepage
http://hddguru.com/content/en/software/2006.04.12-HDD-Low-Level-Format-Tool/
2. Please go to the site below:
http://www.sdcard.org/Downloads.aspx
Please try to download the software sdfv2000.exe (for windows only) and the manual for your reference.
Install the sdfv2000.exe in your computer, then insert the card into the card reader (if you do not have reader, you can try to connect your device to the computer with USB cable) and then run it:
a. Check the drive letter and also the size and make sure it is the correct card.
b. Click Option:
Format Type: Full Erase ON
Format Size Adjustment: ON
c. Click OK, then click Format. Wait until it finish.
d. You will be prompted to remove the card after it finish. Then go ahead and insert it in your (camera/pda/camcorder etc) and see.
16. T-mobile MDA (cannot format 2GB mini SD card)
Please install the software below to your phone (you can download the free trial):

Then use the Storage Tools software above to format the card and see.

SD cards where made to improve the lack of speed of MMC cards, also they include the writing protection/lock, it is the small switch you see in one side of the SD.
Also, SD cards are slightly different from MMCs phisically, SDs are thicker than MMCs (that's why you cannot put them in a Nokia phone), the electrical specs should by backwards compatible (aside from phisycal differences).
Recently some updatings/improvements have been done to MMC specs, they claim to be the fastest memory card technology available, there are MMC plus, etc.
I know all these things that I read recently (I just can't remember where).
hope this info can be used, and one last thing is that information on this subject can be found easily on the net, it's juest a matter of look for it, personally I like a lot an electronics web site: www.epanorama.net
thanks for the useful info and that link too
hmm today i got a miniSD topram, 2gb and it worked fine it was fat format i believe so i went to the winxp format utility and formated with fat32 16k everything seemed to work fine then i put it in the pda phone and nothing it did not see it, so then i put it back in the PC to format back to fat and nothing it does not see the card now at all

Memory card fixes
Guys
We've seen this issue quite a bit lately.. Memory card simply locks up Windows when inserted.. It seems to be related to a flakey FAT table on the card. Formatting does nothing... Disk manager can't deal with it either..
The solution we found that worked was to use Paragon Partition Tools to remove the partition table on the card.. Recreate it.. then reformat..
Unless the card is physically cactus, it works every time..
Good luck!

Good for you. But I'm still getting headache as I can't contact the manufacturer.
I had formatted the micro SD card in ext4 format for using with app2SD. I had it in 2 partitions.
And then after a while, the card stopped functioning (with so little and useless 30MB storage).
I had tried things like recovery, formatting, partition recovery.
Nothing can return it to original state. I just want it to be blank. It's ok I lost all the data.

What is wrong with my Note 2?! PLEASE HELP

Hi I recently purchased a Note 2 from a guy on craigslist. I checked out the phone at purchase and everything proved to be correct. I didn't expect however that he had the phone rooted. I'm a big fan of rooting phones that don't have a good operating systems already or didn't have Android JB but phones like the galaxy phones I believe don't necessarily need to be rooted. I was pissed because I wanted it with stock rom but I just decided to accept it and unroot it myself. So after a long process I got it unrooted and running the latest stock rom and everything seemed to work except for one thing. When I transfered all of the Music files from my previous phones microSD(16gb) to my new one(64gb) none of the music files worked. All of them wouldn't play and the phone would say it can't open the file or something like that. So I tried formating the microSD and trying to put the files on the microSD again and still the files wouldn't play. I had to format the card through the phone itself and transfer the files through Samsung Kies just for 3/4 of the music to work. I can deal with 3/4 but now when I transfer a video file weather through Kies or straight to the folder none of the files play. When trying to play them nothing shows or sounds it's just black screen, you can fast foward or skip but nothing shows. I never thought I would have this much trouble with this phone but it appears as though there's a virus on the phone or card or something that is preventing video and music files to play. Even when trying to play files from the phone on Windows Media Player or any other music/video player the files don't play. I have also found that whenever I connect the phone to my PC let's say a day after I last connected it, I have to run USB connections on Kies and it has to reinstall the drivers for the phone just to actually see the files on the phone. Please help me I have no idea what to do. Thanks in advance.

So you're saying it's the microSD's format? It has nothing to do with the fact that the phone was rooted and that it might have a bug? Would kind of make sense because when I put the 16gb sd card in the phone all of the music files work. So it's the format, but I need a kernel? I have also found that whenever I connect the phone to my PC let's say a day after I last connected it, I have to run USB connections on Kies and it has to reinstall the drivers for the phone just to actually see the files on the phone. Since you're unrooted, you can't flash a new kernel so you may want to dismiss that last thing.
Have you tried only one 64gb microSD? It seems that your card may be bad or it's not formatted correctly for the stock firmware... I would test out another 64gb card and see if that works since the 16 works just fine.
Edit: Sorry... a little vague... the card needs to be formatted as Exfat if you can do that through Windows, that should work in case the card is actually in good condition.

I don't have any other 64gb microSD cards, the one I have came with the phone. The logo and everything on the card have faded out so I don't know what brand but I think it's sandisk. I don't know at this point I'm thinking it has to be the card because I've tried nearly everything and it's still not working the way I want it to. I formatted it using Windows UGI to FAT32 since thats what you said and that was the same format as the 16gb and sure enough most of the music works with some not working. So I tried putting movies on the card and once I didn't see a preview on the bottom left I knew it wasn't going to work. Seems like the card is bipolar I have a 32gb micro I'll try that, it's brand new still haven't used it, should I just put it in and see if it works or should I format it to FAT32? By the way Thanks again really appreciate your help!

I think he mention phone is rooted sorry if misread that part thats the reason i recommend to flashed kernel that support exFAT, actually as far as i know 64gb microsd card default format is already exFAT and 32 or 16gb is FAT32 and some are in exFAT. If doesnt want to flashed kernel then i recommend format sdcard from computer just plug in from card then right mouse that drive then format and select FAT32 format. If some instance your computer can't read your microsd card and cant format there is chance thar your microsd card maybe bad.

If you can see the files in the player, and you can see the sd card directory using a file explorer, its not the card. I had to add two lines to my system settings file. I'm sorry I don't remember the file name or the content of the two lines. Maybe my comment will jog someone's memory.

I can see the files but they do not work, At this point everything is leading to the problem being the card. I mean my other SD cards work with the phone and have no problem playing music or video files. I've tried nearly everything and the card still continues to malfunction.

I've formatted it to exFat a million times. That what I originally was formatting it to because windows quick format doesn't have a FAT32 option only exFat which was default and NTFS. exFat is not the problem.
It's looking more and more like SD damage...
Considering the fact that other cards work fine...
Copy your media to PC from the SD...and get a new card ?
I know it sucks...
And once the new card is installed...be "very" careful moving those files back as they may be messed up...
I'd pull a few songs from the PC after you copy them over and test them on another card to be sure before loading it to a new and expensive SD...
It sounds like the phone is fine...g

I've formatted it to exFat a million times. That what I originally was formatting it to because windows quick format doesn't have a FAT32 option only exFat which was default and NTFS. exFat is not the problem.

Try to format to NTFS first then format to FAT32 if doesn't work then maybe a bad microsd card

Well the card came free with the phone so I'm not too pissed. I'll just sell it and make it someone else's problem.lol
don't be a scumbag; if it doesn't work, don't make someone else's life miserable....throw it away or give it away...

Hummmm, as what the younger people say....REALLY?!?!?!? which I have found has lots of meanings.
really → a question, as an exclamation of dismay, disapproval, doubt, surprise, etc.

I'm not being a scumbag. The card works it's just has some problems but it works. I mean I don't know how the card would react on another phone or maybe someone would use it as their card for their camera I don't know. You're acting like it doesn't work at all and I'm going to try to screw somebody into buying a defective card.

[Q] Running out of Space, Symlinks and Installing Apps to SDcard

Due to size limitations (GPads only coming in 16gb varieties) I am beginning to run low on space on my Gpad (v500 running cm11). However I have a 64gb microSD card and I would like to use this as much as I can to conserve space on the internal memory.
There are a few ways to solve this but I not fully know how to do this.
Firstly, is it possible install apps to microSD card? If so, how? I know some devices support this and some do not. My phone for example does not but I have heard that some people have had success with this.
Next, there are some rather large folders on my internal storage that I would like move to my sdcard however the apps that use those folder can only read them where they are currently located (cmupdates, ebooks, etc).
I read about symlinks and managed to make a few but the only place I was able to make a symlink was to /data/media/0. But the changes to that do not show up the apps which I believe read either /sdcard or /storage/emulated/0. And for my SDcard I can get to it either in /mnt/media/sdcard1 or through /storage/sdcard1.
I tried and succeeded in making a link between /mnt/media/sdcard1/eBooks and /data/media/0/eBooks however the link does not show up in /sdcard or /storage/emulated/0 and it does not show up in the apps, leading me to believe that is where the apps read the sdcard from.
If anyone can answer the above two questions or give any other suggestions for maximizing available space on my internal card please let me know.
Thank you!
I think most of your issues could be resolved with Link2SD (under 10 posts, can't post a link to Google Play).
You can also use an app called Foldermount. It's only $.99 ( if I recall correctly) for the unlocked version. This allows you to move any folder to SD card. I like it as it guides you thru the way and will move the data for you as well. Latest version has been updated to allow apps from play store to install properly. Well worth the $1 price.

Thanks guys! Looks like using these two combined I can get exactly what I wanted. I'll use link2SD to put apps on the SD card and Foldermount to move the other folders I want moved.
Thanks again!
Can you let me know if this works for you? I can't get mine to read or write my SD card at all! I can't even move a picture from my Box cloud account to the SD card. Are you experiencing this? Or did I get a bad unit?

These solutions did work for me, I am still tweaking to get it the way I like it especially since every time I update my Rom Link2SD has to generate new scripts. I can ready and write to the SD card just fine and I could before I started using this as well. I am not sure why you aren't able to write to your sd card. Could it be a bad SD card? Try plugging it into your computer.
I've tried 2 different SD cards both of which I can move files to and from on my computer. So I know it's not the card. I'm thinking maybe I should exchange it out for another day one...

Probably... That sounds like a device issue not card.
How are the cards formatted?
The ROM you are using may not support the format.

I'm not sure I just put the card in my computer and clicked format SD card. I'm not rooted or running any special ROM, it's completely stock out've the box.
Well, if you did it from your PC, it may be formatted NTFS, and you need them formatted FAT 32. Get it here; http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html Not only allows formatting almost any format xFAT, Fat32, NTFS, etc.. and you can partition them also which is not supported by Windows, but IS supported by most Android ROMs. I doubt there is anything wrong with your device.

Thanks for the tip, this makes me feel a little better about my purchase, I'll give it a try. I'm also thinking of buying a 64gb San Disk card and hopefully it will just work with a brand new one.

I have been trying to fix the issue with Rom updates and link2sd. You have to provide the Rom (in my case cyanogenmod) a backup script so it can back up the files. I am planning on figuring it out at some point but if you get it before I do would you mind posting your script? Thanks!

So a follow up with this, I was able to get a script working. I don't know if this feature is unique to cyanogenmod or not but any script in /system/addon.d will execute itself during a rom install and be restored automatically if it was wiped. So using 50-cm.sh as an example I made a script called 11-link2sd.sh to perform the backup of the mount script for link2sd which is located in /system/etc/init.d/11link2sd.
I then had insert this script and my mount script into a cyanogenmod update and flash it in. But after that I tried flashing an update of cm11 to test it and it worked! Attached is my script which should also work for anyone who is able to flash it into their /system/addon.d folder.

HELP I would be pulling my hair out if I had any! SD Card

HELP!
I have a GPE and I am unable to write to the SD card. Copying files doesn't work and I cannot create a folder. I have formatted the card as fat32 in my PC and "erased" the card through settings. I have the same problem with both cards I tried. A 32 GB and 16gb. Both work fine in the PC but cannot create a folder using es explorer or root file explorer. When I tried to copy a folder on it says "copy failed"
It gets even weirder...
If I try to write anything to it from the tablet, no matter how big or small, it refuses. I cannot create a folder on the sd card from the tablet. But when I connect the tablet to my PC I can write to and create folders on the sd card... I tried using DS file (a file explorer from synology) and tried to create a folder and was told "you don't have privilege"
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank You

Kitkat does not allow write to external SD if i remember rightly, kinda crappy and makes the SD card kinda useless, i think CM11 allows you to, not tried it to be honest but sadly you cannot put that on your GPe version neither
Actually there is a fix. See this link. Left you the same response on Android Central. It took longer to reveal as you never mentioned over there that you were running the GPE edition. You posted the issue in the standard G Pad forums. In any case this should fix your issue.

Worked like a charm!
So the GPE will not recognize an SD card at all under stock settings?

Remember that a GPE device is sort of a baby Nexus, and Google refuses to put SD cards on the Nexus devices. You should be able to get the SD card slot working on the GPE version, though, just takes extra effort.

Right, as long as I can get it to the point where I can save some music and movies, then Im happy.
I know...stupid question but i never owned an android device with a micro SD slot before so dont judge me too harshly :
i bought a micro SD (Transendent) 32 GB, formated it with NTSC and put a 6gb 720p x264 movie on it. How can i see the microSD card in the G pad?? I use Astro file manager...but i cant seem to find the microSD...i tryed several folders (mnt/microsd...) but it always just shows the content from the internal memory of the Gpad instead of the micro SD.
So how can i see and access the files? Should i try a different file explorer?
Thanks.

You might need to reformat to exFAT. Seems to be the trick to getting the G Pad to recognize.
My 64gb Sandisk is formatted exFAT and I was able to use MX Player on my GPE to play a vide just fine.

[Q] MicroSD woes

Hey there.
So, I have this wonderful HTC M8. Love it. It's great. Except for my experiences with microSD cards. Basically, I bought a $30 samsung µSD, 64gb, great, wonderful, everything. Something killed it. It lost its formatting every time I mounted it in either Android or Mac OS. So, I returned it, bought a different brand (unbranded, 64gb, $10). This card works great... as long as I don't write data to it from anything except Android. I'm rooted/S-off, so I was able to mount it as RW with ES File Explorer, and yeah. But whenever I copy files to its root directory from my Mac, Android proudly declares that the card is damaged and needs to be reformatted. At this point, I'm going to assume that this isn't a problem with my card, and more a problem with how Android handles things (or how I'm writing files). What the hell is going on, and how can I fix it?
Thanks!

I have problems too with my microSD. I backup to my mSD, whether with TWRP or CWM, and it always fails to restore. I've re-formatted it and I've had the same problem with the dialogue "Damaged .... needs to be reformatted."
Did you ever figure out the problem?
Don't compress the backup
I have no problems writing to, backing up to SD Card from PC or phone. Not sure while you're experiencing your issue but with root and a root file manager, all should be fine.

I haven't been compressing my backups. I actually tried it both ways once. I keep getting "Failed...can't verify md5". Something like that.

Yeah, I can backup to. I just can't do a restore from the mSD. It's weird. Maybe because I formatted it on a Mac, but it was done with MSDOS (FAT). I'll try formatting it on a PC and see if that works.
Format it with your phone.
I'm having different SD card issues, Zoe won't work with my sd card, its a sandisk ultra 64gb class 10 UHS-1 and it says I need a higher class card with at this moment is impossible.
I formatted mine with my phone to try resolve it but made it worse, it formatted it to HTFS/NTFS and when i checked what the storage was like on it, it only read that it was a 10gb card, but my computer picked it up as a 64gb card, so try not to use the phone to format it. I went back to it being fat32 with an app from the playstore, can't find any apps to format it as exFAT though.
Other than that mine is fine.

Writing to sd card restrictions were placed by Google in KitKat 4.4+ versions as a part of 'system enhancements'. I have rooted my M8 and the following three things worked for me:
1. Buy San Disk or another reputed brand card (authentic, fake/generic one gave me the same error message). Generic one are flimsy and often will give you an error message that card was unmounted unexpectedly.
2. Removing write-off protection, see the process at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701816
3. If above two methods still give you the same issue, try formatting the card in fat32 format. It will limit the each file size to 2GB but at least will make the card usable (use this only after trying item#1 & 2).
Good luck.
