I have been looking for a way to do this on the Moto Z Play since it is slightly different the way update notifications work.
Since I found an answer and have not seen this mentioned on the forum, I thought I'd add a comment.
If you have root, you can Freeze the Motorola Update Services application using Titanium Backup.
This should stop update notifications from popping up multiple times per day.
Is anyone aware of a better way? Maybe if you don't have root?

I was wondering if anyone know how the built in app backup in froyo works. I've noticed that sometimes my applications will automatically be restored after a wipe, but that it isn't dependable when switching between different ROMs. Is google matching a build number or something before restoring apps? Does the list of installed apps get updated when google syncs? I've seen old apps install that I had uninstalled several days previously. Lastly does anyone know of a note keeping app that stores the notes on the sdcard? The few I've tried either lose the notes when you reinstall or store them online.
I tried to find answers to this but not know what the feature is actually called is someone limiting on my searches.
I am considering buying (or as the Dev calls it "donating") for Titanium Backup for the freezing feature. I am tired of having to reset all of my settings, redownloading apps, etc, etc.
Anyway, I heard that if I just freeze the apps it "fools" the update into thinking that it is still there while the app not running.
Does this work?

I think freezing only shuts off and hides the app from the app drawer so you can modify it. (At least, that's what another site says)

And does it hinder the OTA process?
I've searched the Google a few different times, but the wording leads to unrelated results.
I thought it was just a glitch / conflict with my rooted Z2 Play, not receiving notifications from Google Play, when app updates are available.
I have auto update turned off for two reasons. I absolutely hate the new cartoon version of Waze (v4+) and I like to know when apps update, in case I have issues, I can more easily identify suspects.
I fired up my backup phone, VZW Z2 Play and the same thing. No notification with plenty of app updates waiting.
Anyone else experience this?

I'm thinking about clearing data.
I found that as a solution for other issues with Google Play, but thought I'd wait for responses here.
Thanks!
even better! if you are still receiving push notification, then Playstore app/service is malfunctioning. Cleaning it up should help.
I haven't updates my phone since day 1 in hopes that a bootloader unlock method may be discovered. I have been manually updating many APPs by going to the about page and using the update link there. There doesn't seem to be an about page for the camera though so I haven't been able to do this. I may have updated it once through Galaxy APPs but I think it was after receiving a notification. When I search Galaxy APPs there is no Camera APP shown.
I have several Google apps (Chome, Duo, YouTube, Google Photos) that I've kept disabled on my OnePlus 3 (Android v9) from the very beginning. For the last two weeks, they keep re-enabling themselves. I've repeatedly disabled them several times but they re-enable in just a few minutes. Any ideas on how to keep them disabled?

Do you have root? If so, Titanium Backup can be used to freeze them (even remove them) whenever not needed and cut off their market links (Play Store links) so that they don't auto update. I think that that is what is happening in your case. Even when auto update is not enabled, sometimes the Google apps behave different to other apps and update themselves.

TNSMANI, thank you for the response. Unfortunately I no longer have root so TB is not an option. You are correct, however, that the apps get re-enabled when they update. That said, this didn't used to happen as I've had them disabled since I got the phone. It only started happening recently.
