I've had this problem before with my Nexus 6P, and I can't seem to solve it on my Pixel XL. The apps I have that use Google Maps do not show the base map layer. For example, in Accuweather Premium, I can see the storm clouds on the map, but the streets, cities, rivers and lakes aren't there. Instead of overlaying the radar on top of the map, I see the radar displayed on a grid, like this:

I have the same problem with other apps such as GasBuddy, RedBox, etc that use Google Maps. I also use RadarNow, which uses its own map base, and it displays the map just fine. When I open Google Maps, everything displays just fine.
I have tried multiple factory data resets to correct this, but I can't get it to work at all. I am stock, unlocked via dePixel8, and unrooted.
Any suggesions?

Last time this happened to me, I reflashed the stock firmware and that fixed it.
You could also try uninstalling Google maps/wipe its data.
Reboot.
Then reinstall Google maps.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried wiping cache/data and uninstalling Maps, but it never hurts to try again. I'll also uninstall all the offending apps, and try reinstalling them again.
I wonder if I signed up for 7.1.2 beta, then unenrolled back to 7.1.1 if it might shock my Pixel back into cooperating. Not quite the same as reflashing stock firmware, but it might do the trick.
Maybe verify all the permissions are correct as well?

That I have done. Thanks for the suggestion, though. I am usually pretty selective on granting permissions, especially Location. But it has been granted for all the affected apps.
I even went into my Google account and re-enabled Location History, to see if that helped. I also tried downloading local maps in Google Maps for offline use. That didn't help either.
You can flash the stock image on top of your current image without losing any setup apps/data.
Just remove the -w from the script.
You'll have to update all the old Google Apps again, but the data should still be there.
It is something easy to try.
My guide will walk you through the process.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/how-to/info-how-restored-to-stock-soft-t3494478
Remember to remove the -w from the script though!
Or download the -w modded script I added to my thread.
Thanks, Eddie. Well-written guide and easy to follow. I'm waiting for Google apps to update.
Keeping my fingers crossed!
Well, no luck with that. I use the -w modded script and everything went smoothly. However, I am getting the same blank grid where the maps should be.
I think I will try it again without the -w modded script to wipe my data and set it up as a new device. It can't hurt, I've already got everything backed up.

If you deal with it as-is for a few more days, then you can flash the March updates.
The new image should be released early next week and I'll be updating the how-to thread with that new image.

You might also try wiping maps data and uninstalling again, then try the Beta maps?

I'm not sure if it's the OG Google maps which is always referred to as beta, or a beta of the Beta Maps. lol
Either way, it's something easy to try.

Given that you have noted that you are cautious about permissions is there any possibility that some other filtering or firewall settings on your device or network is causing things to not work? Just trying to consider other possibilities and am thinking that just because Google Maps works doesn't necessarily mean that other apps that reference Maps services do so in exactly the same way.

Yeah, it has me puzzled. On a whim, I tried a full data reset AGAIN yesterday, and logged in with a new Google account. I gave full permissions to any and all requests. Still no luck.
Hopefully 7.1.2 will trigger something for me. I am tempted to enroll in the Beta program again just to give it a shot, but I'll see what the March update brings us.
any fix on this? I'm having this issue on myradar
I'm on 7.1.2 DP2, and still no fix. I have clean flashed stock 7.1.1 multiple times before I took the 7.1.2 DP2 OTA.
Everything was working fine before I dePixel8ed. I don't know if that is related at all, but it's one of my few remaining avenues to explore.
I know this thread is kinda old; sorry about that, but I have this same problem not just with the Pixel XL but also the new Samsung 8+ both of these phones are stock unrooted and holding the latest version 7 of android
I am too seeing no map data for some apps like GasBuddy but Google Maps themselves work so I thought it was bizzare but then again you never know if Google is playing nice? Maybe this is on Google's end and not allowing those apps to use their map API?
What good are the apps if you can't use the map?

2. Copy the file to your internal or external SD Card
3. Reboot into recovery and perform a nandroid backup (or your backup of choice)

It's based on JB 4.2.2
edit:
GSM connection doesn't work (no signal).. also , everything is very slow and laggish
Will you update ColorOS to 4.4 in future ?
first thing that i want to say is: thank you very much! i really love this rom,it's fantastic, but it has several bugs: first of all whatsapp doesn't want to install (application not installed) and also google play (i've tried to flash gapps, also to upgrade play store but it always says : no connection).
Anyway thanks for your job
Why is this ROM so big?

Yes,I will keep updating
Everything about this ROM works EXCEPT the part where GOOGLE comes into play. But this single thing is the biggest determining make-it or break-it factor.
What’s the point of a Android smart phone if I cannot link my google account to it? Google Voice, Gmail, Play Music, Google Drive, etc.
Smoothness is great. Data works! Call is good. Not laggy at all (compared to AOKP, liquid, and vanir). The ROM just feels solid, and not experimental, but it’s still missing GOOGLE.
I tried to flash JB 4.2.2 gapps and no luck. Tried a few other gapps. No luck.
Which is why I cannot continue to use this ROM.

If you can link me to the exact gapps that you used, i'd give it a try before flashing another ROM, because this rom just wont cut it.
It's a good ROM, but for all the wrong reasons.
BTW, I went to OPPO's market place (built-in app) and downloaded google play services. After I downloaded it, it constantly says "google play services stopped working"....

Pixel 2 XL was running great on Bootleggers ROM. OK Google worked and Now Playing as worked, which I think is somehow linked to OK Google.
Upgraded Bootleggers to latest version and all of a sudden OK Google just won't work and so did Now Playing.
Tried numerous things from clearing Google application data to uninstalling and reinstalling it from play store, moving it to system and whatnot but in no avail.
Installed Colt OS and its not working as well.
I wonder if there's any way to sort this out or anyone has managed to get this working once it stopped.
Everything else in assistant seems to work as expected.
Update:
Restored to stock taimen-pq2a.190305.002 and everything is working well viz. OK Google as well as Now Playing.
I plan on let the system get security update then will try Bootleggers again on top of this and see what happens.
So this is what is happening for all the ROMs except stock.
- Access with Voice Match gets configured during setup but is not enabled
- Trying to enable it brings the Assistant setup screen, and it sometimes takes previous saved voice data but doesn't switched Voice Match on.
- Trying above step repeatedly brings the Teach screen, and a toast notification saying "There's something wrong with Microphone, please try again" and as it can be inferred, the screen doesn't proceeds as phone is unable to hear OK Google.
Phone is on Havoc ROM now, but the problem is still the same. I tried different security patches and old version, but no avail. OK Google and Now Playing is only working on Stock for now.

I do not get any message that there's a vendor mismatch. I tried old vendor with new ROM to isolate this issue, but that didn't help as well.

Yes, Clean Flashed always. (Wipe Data + Cache not System)
Currently I'm running Havoc which I flashed on Stock.
The access path you outlined does look different but the gear takes me to the same setup screen which shows your assistant can already recognize your voice.
I could access it through assistant. (Open Assistant -> Compass -> 3 dot -> Settings -> Phone)

I've disabled and enabled access to microphone. Even uninstalled google and reinstalled it from store on Bootleggers but to no avail.
So I posted screen captures of my install for reference. I just tested OK Goole on WiFi and LTE and all is working fine. Maybe you have an app that is interfering? Anyway just wanted to let folks know it's not a global issue with the ROM. This was a clean install also for what that's worth.
Oh and I know my phone number is in there. Lol I grabbed the original instead of the edited one. Blame it on nightshift.

I'm not always sure if it's a ROM or google problem. Today I couldn't get "OK Google" or now playing to work on the latest Crdroid. Same goes for RR.(too much lineage DNA?) I just flashed DU and it works perfectly. Bootleggers works fine as well.
@Edmontonchef
Thanks for the message. I'll do stock -> wipe -> bootleggers today and see what the outcome is.
@CyberpodS2
I'm sure its not a ROM issue, but what's intriguing is why OK Google works on Stock but fails on all custom ROMs at least as of now for me since past month.

Update:
I was highly occupied last week and was traveling so didn't get a chance to work on phone.
But to my surprise last Saturday I was at a bar and I saw Now Playing displaying the name of the song. That night I tried OK Google and as expected even that worked.
Now I didn't do anything other than some applications might have got updated automatically previous night. It could possibly be another application interfering or Google update (if there was one) fixed it.

Did you block root permission for all apps?
Facing the same issue here. Did anybody find any solution?
I found the answer! The apps are being suspended by alpha backup for backup. The bugger ended up suspending itself while backing itself up. Guess what happens when you suspend your own self?....
A simple :
Code:
pm unsuspend com.ruet_cse_1503050.ragib.appbackup.pro
from adb shell with root did the magic

Oh wow, that's cool, @devsk, thanks for coming back for an update!
My apologies @matze19999 , I haven't seen your update on the thread (didn't get a notification!)
It just happened with me again, though, and alpha backup blocked the settings and UI wizard apps ,bizarre to say the least. Just thinking how I will get out of this situation as ADB shell doesn't work , magisk (which I renamed and is called settings) is also locked and if I boot via bootloader with a magisk_rooted boot image, I can't install magisk as well. Looks like it's start from scratch for me.

Many thanks Sir!
You've saved my life
Exactly the same happened to me when trying out Alpha Backup Pro and naively check the "Suspend apps before backup/restore" not realizing it might not unsuspend them *after* backing them up :/
Quite a bugger if you'd ask me - I had to unsuspend about 200 apps ... what a tedious job
On another note: what do you think about Alpha Backup Pro? Is it worth keeping? I'm not switching/updating ROMs a lot nowadays because our device has some problems with TWRP so I can't test it "in real life scenarios"
Apart from this glitch with suspend, I have found this app to be the most complete and most reliable backup solution (I loved TiBu before it got abandoned).

Thanks for coming back to my question!
I'm still undecided between Alpha Backup Pro and OandBackupX ...
Right now I'm quite puzzled that Alpha Backup Pro seems to have executed the nightly schedule to backup the complete data well - at least the backup folder is filled with files *but* inside the app the backed up data tab is empty
I played with OandBackupX for quite a while because I was looking for replacing TiBu with an open source solution. My advice: stay away from it. It won't restore properly. As much as I like open source, this app is not there yet. I hope it is complete and reliable at some point.
With Alpha Backup, make sure you do a complete local backup! Ignore everything else.
Id like to stay with pixel instead of having to sell and then buy a new phone, just hassle, but iv seen proton is a very good ROM to run, my issues are with updates, how would you update the proton ROM? And is it easy enough to revert back to stock if needed?
Thanks.
If you want more privacy and security, as well as regular updates, GrapheneOS is an excellent option. Not sure the Proton ROM has OTA-like updates though

Graphene is a privacy based rom that lacks some crucial functionality if you need everything running. This is according to various posts on here and Reddit. Some people love it, and I'm sure some don't. I saw someone that liked it a lot but had to roll back because they couldn't get something or other working. But it depends on your needs.
As for Proton there is no OTA but updates are posted and they are a simple web install that takes about 4 or 5 minutes. Nothing is wiped if you are updating. After installing you can relock the bootloader if you want but that's another wipe as I'm sure you know. This is a very stock rom with a lot of tweaks in the background. FPR for one. It's much quicker although not perfect yet. Also the latest version is the December build with all security and most features enabled. One difference, of many, is that call screening is still available on this build. Call on hold is not. I flashed this rom and then installed the November radio over it since it does come with the crappy December radio. It's way better, I don't lose signal very much although I still do occasionally. Bottom line I like it and would have a hard time going back to stock. I'm not rooted and after the next update I might relock the bootloader, wipe the device and leave it at that.
Reverting to stock is the same as with any other custom rom. You can web install stock or manually fastboot it. Not a difficult process.

Hey I just tried there now and I unlocked the bootloader but it keeps saying about available space and if I'm using an incognito browser? Is there a specific browser I need to use to do this, I tried chrome and edge? Says I need 5gb available, my pc has like 1TB, any suggestions

I'll head over there now. I did see that a day or so ago.
edit: looks like the problem arises if you have multiple profiles on Chrome. I think the manual install is not that difficult though if you still run into problems. Flashall.bat -w to wipe the device then flashall.bat to install the rom. Don't do a thing until it's done. It's tempting because you get a fastboot menu allowing you to restart the device. Don't do it let the rom install direct you. I actually forgot if it's an auto reboot into the rom or finally the rom instructs you to reboot. But it should be pretty clear.

Are you using a VPN by chance? VPN are known to cause issues with wireless devices trying to connect (printers, Sonos (audio), debugging, et cetera), since your two favored toys can't "find" each other any more.
Can anyone currently using this ROM try out the translate function from the screen shot menu? I included a screen shot of how it normally presents with the results after selecting translate.
Also if you test it, there needs to be enough of a foreign language on the screen and also it might not trigger of it has your default language on the screen mixed in

Does anyone know how to bypass Google Pay root detection? I'm using universal safetynet fix by kdrag0n and the default Magisk denylist but I keep getting detected by Google Play Services. My device does meet basic integrity check but not device level or strong integrity check either. Can somebody help me with this
I have added GMS, Play Store and Wallet to DenyList
Device: Google Pixel 6 Pro
Have added playstore and google play services to the denylist?

Have you re-root the device?
Program launches with no issues for me.
* Installed SNF 2.4.0 (same module you had installed earlier).
* Make sure you expand the program in the Zgyist list and choose all parts of it.
* Force close the Google Play Apps (Store, Services, etc.) and clear the Cache.
* Reboot phone

Does it work for March TQ2? Because it ain't working for me
Try adding google wallet to the deny list.
btw - a device with an unlocked bootloader will never pass strong integrity.
edit - i see you've already added wallet.

Let's start here. How are you testing SafetyNet? I use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rikka.safetynetchecker.
***EDIT***
Forgot to mention, make sure after you enable them in the Deny List, force stop any Google Play apps, clear cache on each one and reboot. Not all of those steps are necessary, but it covers the bases.

Cleared all Google apps. I'm testing SN by using the Play Integrity API Checker. In order for GPay to pass your device has to MEETS_DEVICE_INTEGRITY, which I'm not able to pass. I know I'm not using SafetyNet because Google has deprecated the SafetyNet so it's impossible for me to pass without it saying that it's out-of-date
So just checked today and YES, I am able to pass DEVICE_INTEGRITY and Google Wallet is working! Turns out you need it to let it cook after resetting data and then you're good to go

You cannot pass strong integrity at all. Fortunately strong integrity at this time is not required for Google Pay.
