Unlocking Bootloader and rooting my Pixel XL - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

Hello guys!
So today I bought a Pixel XL from a guy off gumtree. The phone was purchased from Carphone Warehouse UK, and its unlocked in any carrier. The thing is, the phone runs 7.1.1 NOF26V. I downloaded skipsoft's tool, but i couldn't find my build number there to perform my unlocking. does anyone know a different method to do it? thanks in advance !

So that is an EE phone right? It is carrier unlocked, you can move it from carrier to carrier. That does not mean it is bootloader unlocked. And since it is on 7.1.1 now it can not be bootloader unlocked. Below is the method to unlock a regular google phone, but that isn't going to help you.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/how-to/guide-how-to-unlock-root-flash-pixel-xl-t3507886
And here is the method to unlock a Verizon or EE phone that is still on 7.1 but that isn't going to help you either. Sorry, you are done once you are on 7.1.1

I don't know if it's an EE phone. All I know is that Carphone Warehouse sells unlocked phones. But I cannot know for sure if that's the case here.. thanks a lot for your answer, I really appreciate it!

Follow method one then. If it unlocks it is not an EE phone.

Possible to root the Pixel on 7.1.2?

Hi All,
I got a bestbuy/verizon pixel xl and am unable to unlock my bootloader to install TWRP and Root my pixel
So, while i was searching for methods to root without unlocking bootloader, i found articles on rooting without TWRP. Is this method still supported on 7.1.2 and Verizon set pixel?

You can not root it unless you unlock the bootloader. It has always been that way.

If yours is a Google version then it doesn't matter what update you are on, it will still be unlockable.
How do you know what version you have? I got my phone from Verizon but there is no bloat or Verizon anything on it. Could I possibly have a variant that can be unlocked?

Simple, go to Setting/About phone, and tab the Build number text 5 times. Go back to Setting and select Developer options. If the OEM unlocking option is grayed out, it's a Verizon Pixel/XL, if you can toggle the slidder on and off, it's a Google Pixel/XL and can be bootloader unlocked anytime you want, regardless of update.
Seeing as how you purchased it directly from Verizon, I'm fairly certain it's a Verizon Pixel/XL. Any phone purchased directly from Google's Online Store, will always have the option to unlock their bootloader whenever they want.
Thank you. Unfortunately it is gray.

What version of Android are you on. If it's on 7.1 still then you can still unlock.

I paid almost 1000 on Samsung. Com, will they unlock my bootloader?

I bought mine straight from Samsung.com Verizon variant, will I be able to have them unlock the bootloader? And if not that unlocked Version they're about to release, will it have an unlocked bootloader?
? ? ?
Ummmm.... That's a negative, chief.

The Verizon variant bootloader might not be unlocked any time soon if at all but there is always hope as it's been done before on other Verizon Galaxy variants. The unlocked one, the world variant, will does have an unlocked bootloader and even root but there may be some issues getting it to work with USA carriers fi you're trying to buy one and use it here.

SM-N910V Questions

Hello,
First time poster. I just bought a refurbished unlocked Verizon Note 4. It is currently running Android Version: 6.0.1. I am interested in upgrading the OS to Nougat or Oreo (if possible) Do I have to root the phone to do this? I am not really interested in rooting, I just want to update the OS.
If I have to root, whats the easiest method? I read conflicting threads on the forums saying it cant be done with Verizon Note 4's. Some people say it can be done.
Thanks

Lol well you either have root and an unlocked phone or you dont have an unlocked phone. Hopefully you didnt get charged more for the alledged unlock. Unless you meant simlocked in which case , all verizon phones are unlocked and i hope you didnt pay more for it .

Sorry, when I said unlocked I meant SIM unlocked. I am from Canada and all our carriers simlock the phones while under contract. Anyways, is there a way to force upgrade the OS on these devices without rooting?

smail amzdak on facebook solve your problem

You bought a Verizon variant. With Verizon models you can't check "oem unlock" so you can't unlock the bootloader. You are stuck with a locked phone. No root.

Maybe, the people on this thread: Verizon Pixel Bootloader unlocked? by EstiR86
Had their Verizon Pixel/Pixel XL unlocked by Smail. You can also reach him via ebay: item 222913601503
thats the best, and only bet. good luck.

verizon vs unlocked google pixel difference?

I've got my eyes on a unlocked Verizon pixel 3 XL that's unlocked. How deep is Verizon's software in the pixel and would it even be possible to fully convert it to a regular Google pixel?

If the bootloader is unlocked I don't see any reason you can't use the non verizon firmware on it. The devices themselves are identical, just the firmware is different. Note that I have not done this so you're at your own risk.

As far as I know it's sim unlocked. If that's unlocked, bootloader should be unlockable as well right? Or how does the process go on the pixel?
On 6T it's you get a sim unlock, then you send a request application, once approved they send you a .bin to unlock the bootloader thru fastboot

No, sim and bootloader are two different things. You'd need the bootloader unlocked to flash the regular Google pixel firmware. Sim unlock just allows you to use the phone on different carriers.

I understand the difference so In another words the bootloader is not unlockable on the Verizon one and there is no process for once it's sim unlocked like it is on the Oneplus 6T (where sim unlock is required in order to unlock bootloader)

No you will not be able to unlock the bootloader on the Verizon variant weather it is sim unlocked or not. However you can uninstall all the pre loaded Verizon apps. I had the Verizon model and was able to uninstall all the bloat. The only difference is the bootloader and being able to root.

I've read thru it, I mean someone will crack it sooner or later. Some fine folks brainstorming it. Wish it was as simple as on the one plus, you just wait 7 days and you're unlocked.
Is there a difference in model number or something on the box itself?

If you want an unlockable bootloader steer clear of verizon plain and simple. No way around it

I know, was trying to make sure the one I was getting on eBay was infact a Google one. Apparently there's a major difference in the label. Same model number etc. However there's a lot more writing on it. Mention of imported by Google Canada which isn't present on the Verizon one.
