Safe G4s? - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Considering buying a G4 due to the comparably high specs for the price range. However, this bootloop issue has me thinking twice.
Are there any models of LG G4 that seem exempt from the bootloop issue?

You mean ones manufactured from this January – as in last month –*and that these are labeled 1026 and up?
If they were just manufactured a month ago, how do we know that they won't die, say, next month?

I think he means serial code 601 and above are "relatively safe" but that said, they will bootloop its just matter of how long it takes and how lucky you are. (I also doubt LG still produces G4's and replacement parts for it)

This has been asked several times now. Really.. Every forum has a search function.
I haven't seen any prove of a 6xx or 7xx serial device yet.
I own 2 g4 h815 devices both with serial 603. Heavy usage. No problems.
I wouldn't buy a refurbished phone where the mainboard was replaced. Only a phone directly coming with a 6xx or higher serial.
You can have always bad luck on ANY electronic device though. For guarantees you have warranties

If that's the case, do you have a recommendation for an alternative replacement-or-upgrade to my G3?
To elaborate, here's what I posted in the recommend-a-device thread:
phnord;[url said:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71083923&postcount=10168]I've[/url] got an LG G3 – an AT&T D850, LG's flagship from 2014.
I've been mostly satisfied with it for the last few years. However, it's screen just cracked, and seeing as it will cost me $50+ for a replacement screen, I'm considering jumping ship.
As such, I'm looking for something:
Cheap
Comparable to or better than the LG G3
Stable - not prone to tons of hardware / software issues like the G4
Well supported in the development community
In particular, some features that would be nice:
Battery life equal to or better than G3
Processor / performance equal to or better than G3
Swappable batteries or very, very good battery life
MicroSD card Slot or very, very large internal memory
Cameras equal to or better than G3
Durability equal to or better than G3
Rootable / Custom-ROM-able
Development community activity comparable to or better than G3
Screen size / brightness equal to or better than G3
Tetherable
Torch
I'd like to keep it under $100, but am willing to go up to the $100-$200 range if need be.
I *DON'T* need it to be carrier unlocked. I'm sticking with AT&T, so if it's locked to AT&T, so be it.
I'm willing to buy used if it's a reliable, well supported phone.
Thoughts? Any advice would be urgently appreciated!!!

Still don't believe this is true. Maybe those were replaced / repaired ones or maybe there are other issues then the ilapo. I didn't saw anything like that yet.

G4 - Recommneded buy?

Hi,
My LG G3 battery is faulty and I need to replace it.
My top contender for the job is LG G4. I'm mostly care about A) Battery life time B) Durability C) Camera quality, and of course I don't want to go beyond the G4 price category (sub 350-400$). I never play games on my phone, so I guess I don't need relevant specs, and in fact, I prefer 5.2 over 5.5 displays.
I'm a bit concerned about the bootloop hardware problem. I plan to buy the phone abroad, so I won't have local warranty.
A) Would you recommend buying this phone? I can get it for ~330$ at ebay.
B) If not, what phone would you recommend for me?
C) How can I avoid the bootloop problem? Should I ask for a specific series? If I'm buying a new one, is it likely that I'll get one with a faulty hardware?
G4's battery is meh but its camera quality is superb.About the bootloop, builds with serial number that start with 510 or 600+ are free of flaws but i don't know if you can check for the serial number from the ebay reseller.I really this phone,it had all my needs except some demanding game were a bit laggy. If you want a different phone, you can get the galaxy s6,battery life is better and comes with a fast charger.

My wife has the s6. Battery life is not any better.
I would recommend the G4. Just get the newer Serial.

Battery life on g4 is much better than s6. Get your facts straight.

Honestly, the G4 isn't a massive upgrade over the G3, plus the bootloop issue is very troublesome. It took me all of a week with the G4 before I was wishing I saved my upgrade for something else.
If you're not going to jump to the G5 or another more recent phone, I'd probably get another G3. Just my opinion.
guys talking about the bootloop problem...can u guys tell me more about it..Im also willing to buy that phone?
Link from where il be buying : https://en-sa.wadi.com/lg-g4-h815-32-gb-4g-lte-black-39075.html (cuz in my country h815 isnt available)
It has this code "LG772EL24FUX"
Can u guys tell me more about it...Will it be rootable..unlockable?
If your top priority is battery life, and the only problem is a bad battery with your g3. Why not just get an extended battery for the g3 for $25-50 and be able to get 10hrs screen on time.
Save that $300 for next year.

Hi,
I have received the G3 a month ago from an ebay reseller. After two week, the proximity sensor went dead, and after two more weeks, the battery. I suspect this is a faulty phone (maybe refurbished? Who knows with ebay).
I have two options:
A) I can return the phone to the ebay reseller and get refund, and then buy some other phone.
B) The reseller offered that he'll pay from the local repair (70$), and I'll keep the phone.
What would you do?
Re Battery Life :My G3 running on MM had a fairly decent battery life, although, as I mentioned, I have only used it for a few weeks.

Depends a bit on how much you got the g3 for. If its a refund of $260 or higher, is an H815(bootloader unlockable) and I can confirm the g4 is not an early batch, I may opt to upgrade to the g4. If not, you may be dumping an extra $100-200 on another seller that may not be so nice to you if the g4 has problems.

I paid 240$ for the G3. I can get the G4 for about 335$.
Regarding the G4 bootloop issue, apparently LG produced faulty units for the first few months (we think) that results in your phone being unable to start up. LG will honor their manufacturer warranty and repair it (if your bootloader is unlocked it's hit-or-miss on if they're willing to help) but quite a few are experiencing bootlooping again, after the supposed fix. Many consider the G4 a ticking time bomb.
I still owe $400 on mine through AT&T but am going to pay it off next month and go for an HTC, possibly.

Not only does the battery life seem about even, but I also thought the G4 bootloader problem was with the 505 through 507 serials..
Someone correct me if I am wrong.
Yeah, battery life seemed even to me.
The bootloop is regarded as hitting 505-507, but there are a few other cases of it hitting other models, such as a 603.

Is it still worth getting the G4?

I'm looking for a mobile device with a good camera and CM support, is it still worth getting the G4? what are other options there that support CM and custom roms? thanks
CM support as in cyanogenmod? Unless if you're getting the very specific model that can be unlocked, I'd say look else where.
I know the Nexus 6P would be a nice choice for both CM and a decent camera. Not sure if the S6 has an unlocked bootloader, if it does, then that's a great choice as well since their camera is just about as good as the G4.
I'd get a G3. G4 has too many issues.

nah, that's totally wrong . If you get a phone with S/N 500+ then expect to have some issues, but if you get a phone with S/N 600+ don't expect to have issues because phones with 600+ are made in 2016.
How do you know that's wrong? There have been a few G4's in the 600's that bootlooped, as reported on here and other boards. Even fixed G4's are re-looping.
Fact is, the early G4's have been bootlooping recently and we can't say that any newer ones won't until some time passes. It's a time bomb situation. It's not a chance I'm willing to take on a $400 plus device.
Thanks to all for responses
No. Too many devices are bootlooping. Mine was bricked from it last week. Save your money and buy a Nexus 6p

Good camera and CM don't mix. Pick one. Any time you add CM you lose the stock camera.
The nexus will work but they are only a decent camera (lacks OIS) so not as good as the stock G4 camera.
is it worth getting a G4 ? heh of course. What else can compete with it now at the going price.
Never selling mine. It will be with me until it dies
Look for serials 510 and over and you will be ok. Try to get with warranty.
Thanks, I have the option to get a serial starting with 6 but I've heard that even these are having the bootloop problem, not sure though it is as frequent as the old ones.
No, just get another brand, lg sucks.

How many devices have gotten the bootloop problem? What would a rough estimate be, any idea's ?
Jesus, what a load of rubbish from some users! The G4 was one of the best devices of 2015, as chosen by every single reviewer out there! Maybe not No1, but definitly among the top. I have owned 3 G4 units at different stages, and am using one right now, and have had 0 issues. It is a perfect phone in every way especially with the low price tag. Sure, I would take a Galaxy Note 5 or S7 Edge over the G4 , but considering im paying about 1/2 of the price (at least in my country, New Zealand), im pretty happy! Flagship specs and performance with half the price.
I will be upgrading to the HTC 10 once it is available, but the G4 has absolutely served me well, and highly recommended to anyone.
All the reviewers praised it before the bootloop hit, six to eight months after release.
Upon release it had some moderate touch screen issues, but was otherwise a good phone. No one is disputing that. The problem is the bootlooping and how LG is/has handled it. It's not a small issue. There are users everywhere that have been hit by it, and LG has done nothing but offer repairs to some, while others have to fight for it, despite the issue being completely LG's fault.
In all honesty, the G4 isn't a big upgrade at all over the G3. If I was intent of getting an LG, I'd go for the G3. Almost the exact same phone with no fear of bootloop and a lower cost.

That's true, you can't deny the hardware issues that happens to some, even though it didn't happen to me. But come on now, the G3 ovee the G4? The ui was just too laggy on the G3, not to mention that horrible over sharpening of the screen. I would still happily pick the G4, CONSIDERING the price difference between the G4 and other flagships. If money was no issue then definitly I would go for other devices. But the value for money is just too good to pass on.
Anyway, I will be back to my beloved HTC once the htc 10 hits the market. Looks like a solid comeback from htc. You might disagree but I will cherish my time with the G4 [emoji4]

Nothing but offer repairs ? what pray tell is LG to do.
Those that bought with warranty are covered for as long as the term is.
Those that bought without warranty were taking on a risk. This is true with anything. But then people are so passionate in this forum about phones that nobody thinks twice. And they will do it again in a heartbeat

Camera on the G4 is a generation jump. The same module was used in the G2, G3 and G flex 1 & 2. They changed it with the G4 and what a difference it makes.

Puts things into perspective doesn't it.

Is the bootloop issue active to sway a new customer elsewhere

The G4's price at some spots like Amazon is amazing to pass up. I have done my research on various phones and stay active on everything. With to many phones and variants in existence I can't be an expert on all. I'm still seeing the bootloop issue in forums but LG addressed this like 6 months ago. Are new in box versions of the G4 fixed? Or will these be phones that set in a warehouse for a year and will have the problem. I'm a android enthusiast tweaker. So my next phone has to be a contender with development. The 2 most important things. I recently bought a OnePlus 2 but after a ridiculous amount of negativity regarding hardware/software issues and overall negative real world reviews I sent it back before the 30 days were up. Most of which was recent times sadly. While some people might have a great version OP2 with good luck way to many people were sitting with a $300 brick in another country waiting forever. Sorry to ramble but I've been searching for 2 months now for a great midrange device that can be bought at $300 or less and have development but not have a guaranteed broken feature.

its unknown if they really fixed problem... they said they did but still people is reporting bootloop issues with newer phones as well.. the amount of people reporting is low... but they say it takes 8-9 months to show up so we need time for this phones to reach that time and see if they all start bootlooping likes the 505's.
be aware that not all g4 can be bootloader unlocked..

First of all G4 isnt a faster or a better all performer...if u want performance n quality go for LG V10 and for bootloop its for real most phones are refurbished meaning they were bought last year were only used for a week or more just like urs and then were sold so after a couple a months they were shipped to other countries and were sold off.... these G4s werent at all used hence many didnt pass the bootlloop time period for it to get bricked but many will eventually...This bootloop issue is so real i had to buy a used G3 for 130US$ i use my G4 as a second phone my phone hasnt been bootlooped as of yet but it will certainly so i might just turn it off let it sleep

Appreciate the fast responses guys. I didn't know the bootloop was a time developing type issue. Good to know.
"Jinderation" The V10 is a great looking phone but that is a pure flagship device in my eyes as I can't get one cheaper than $500. At that price I have plenty of options. The G4 H810 I can obtain new for $278-$285 so its a big difference vs the V10. My cutoff is $299 before taxes. Since the bootloop is a real issue I guess I'm gonna have to pass. Seeing as you never know if you got that repackaged type used looks new phone. I love everything about this phone especially at that price with the options.
I don't know why but I first came into the mod world in 2008 with the IPhone. Around 2013 to date I've been in the Android world. Development on hardware and software seems to be rushed on everything now a days and something has "that issue" Owning a IPhone I new if there was a real bug a update was gonna come out fast and even the 2011 4S has up to date IOS 5 years later. These android developers need to stop developing 35 versions of a phone every year and make 3 or 4 and the variants and produce them right. Again thanks for the replies guys. I guess I'm back on my search list for that phone.
S5 or carrier model S6 is on ur budget also ..S6 doesnt have any mc slot i also had one sold and bought G4..you can also try buying a repaired G4 directly from LG which already had motherboard replaced the pro is ur device wont get bricked ever or u could check ebay for certain model which were produced in 2015..they also havent reported for bootloop issue... My advice go for Galaxy S5 F model or G3 t mobile lots of mods and custom rom is availabe and also these devices have bootloader unlock and then wait alteast an year for S7 OR its edge version to have its priced down then buy that
Also this is my topic im sharing with u...see the consumer review on 1st page that i have mentioned and yes bootloop is a very serious issue

Getting one tomorrow, bootloop?

Hello all,
So basically I've ordered the G4 (actually not knowing about the issue) and I'm picking it up tomorrow. However, what serial numbers are an absolute no-go and , did LG release a new revision? I am aware that 505 is a no-go but what about 601, 607, 608? As far as I'm concerned 608 is the one to have as it does not fail. I am confused and is it possible to see the serial on the box?
It's a H815 - Black leather EU version. Now the place I'm buying it from has excellent service so warranty ( 2 years ) is not a problem, although I reaaalllyy don't want to go through the hassle again with my LG being sent back two times for the plastic cracking.
Price is 350 euros ( which is because of the amazing service which I value a lot at the place I'm buying it from.)
I was contemplating the Mate S but it's too slow and no android 7, LG nexus 5X has the same problems and for 50 euros more the LG is much better.
Please help
Well, I had a dual sim version and it went in bootloop 2 weeks back, after trying everything I had to return it to the vendor as it was still under one year warranty, now waiting for their answer, I have always used Samsung, S1, S2, S3, S5 and got G4 as primary phone in Jan16, such issue never happened with Samsung, I still have S2, S3 and S5 and they all run without any problem, I won't get any LG phone ever.

I am confused and is it possible to see the serial on the box?
Please help

The serial number is written on the sticker on the outside of the box. This will either start with 50X... or 60X...
If it's a 50X model, I would return it without opening the box at all because some of these companies (especially those on Amazon) just hold piles of old stock. Without opening the box, it's an easy return.
I'm using a 60X model and it's a great phone. That said; I have had the occasional flash of static on one side of the screen which was really worrisome at first. It's basically a split second glitch on the screen and is seemingly harmless and only occurs a few times per week. I'm happy to live with that and didn't bother returning the phone.
It may or may not boot loop. Judging from internet though there are very very few reports of 6xx S/N going boot loop. You also have to keep in mind that not all of those reports are real just like with the Samsung explode-gate. There are many ppl who like to report false alerts just because. I don't see too many reports of 6xx going bad. The vast majority of them were the 505's. I blame LG though for all of this. They tried to cover it up never acknowledged it publicly. They sent an email admitting the problem to one Android fan site can't remember which it was and that was all. Meanwhile it took them too long to identify the issue. I don't believe the latest S/N's have this problem. I don't see enough evidence to support this. LG should have come in public and say that they finally fixed it once and for all and say from which S/N and after it's safe. but they didn't. I assume they didn't want to deal with the extra costs of the PR nightmare, the recalls and angry customers and stores.
Alrighty, got myself a 607 version which is great. Black leather with gold buttons, in the beginning I was kinda hesitant because I was expecting the grey buttons but tbh the gold on black looks really classy. Amazing camera. Unfortunately the screen has a yellowish tint to it but I fixed it thanks to this wonderful app Screen balance ( I really was not expecting it to be this good, it basically eliminated the use of a modified kernel because unlike all other apps it runs as an accessibility service.) I will probably post about it.

Worth buying a G4?

Hey guys,
Is it worth buying the LG G4? How is the Custom ROM support for it?
How much is a good price for it too, used? In GBP.
Thanks
I will never buy an lg smartphone ever,i have problems with bad call quality (low volume),lags, overheating, red colored retention on display on places where he was white color (signal icons) and finally my H815 died by irreversible bootloop bug.For me affter such a bad experience with phone and LG customer service ,I would never buy their product even if offer it for free.LG must change logo from LG to LS - life sucks ,even if one man does not buy LG product after this post I will be happy

Oh yes and stay away from Samsung and from HTC and from apple and...
To be honest! ALL the above can happen in different kind of manner with ALL vendors. Really do not think that buying a phone from other vendor will protect you.
Every model from every vendor has its own problems.
Buy a note 7 and your house may burn. Buy a iPhone and the screen may break. And so on.
When it comes to this device by LG the main problem is the boot loop issue which you can find in 100 threads here and elsewhere. I really like this device but as with all devices you should prepare yourself what you want:
Do you wanna install custom roms? Do you need root? Then you need a g4 model which can be unlocked (which I personally highly recommend). Not every model is possible to be unlocked.
The other one is the serial. The first 3 digits should be 60x the higher the better. The last one is: ensure you have warranty.
I really like this device but I have the h815 unlocked and twrp which ensures having a backup if all goes bad.

You know how much I respect you mate, but this device is affected by too much potential problems. No bootloop?
OK, screen ghost. No screen ghost and bootloop? Ok so talk about poor battery life, delay with updates, overheating ecc ecc..
And about development.. We have cyano. One custom kernel that will be no more developed (llama) and a couple of ROM based on cyano with cyano bugs inside and that make you lose stock camera and all his killer features.
I understand your point of view, but I will never ever say to a friend of mine "going to buy a G4, well done!". This is my opinion, stay away from LG expecially from G4.
Personally I passed to 6P.
Hope to see you again in other devices community!
TBH onest? No. The risk of getting bootloop or any other issue is quite too high, and customer experience I had is the worst one I've ever had.
IF it had no hardware issues that would've been the best phone to buy right now bot specs and price wise.
I'm Italian, here we have H815 international version with unlockable bootloader. Mine is serial 60x. No more bootloops, anyway no more serial one. My G4 is a fabulous phone, except for not great battery life. But it has quick charge.
So far for about 300 euro I don't se a better phone than G4 now.
With G3 I had a problem with the touch screen, sent to LG in warranty and they change all the screen and even the plastic front cover. So I had also a good experience with official assistance.
