910p motherboard replacement - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My 910p started giving me EMMC errors. I tried several different Odin's that I know to have been good and worked on my device in the past. I haven't actually used Sprint cell service in 2-3 years. I've been using a VoIP app for calls and text. Since my device is out of contract and warranty not much I can do about it. I have been using my in-laws free Alcatel OT Pixi 7 on T-Mobile just so I can get by until I can get a new phone.
I was looking into replacement boards for my Sprint GN4 and then thought, what if I replaced the board with a T-Mobile board so I could use this SIM card. Would that work? Or are there other items in the phone that would not be compatible? It would just make more since to swap to a T-Mobile board from Sprint so I can have cell service again instead of just wifi with another sprint board.
Didn't want to spend the $100 if it wasn't going to work.

Good question. I'd ask a repair shop for the specifics and get a quote for labor.
UBreakItiFixIt gave me a $10 labor only quote for motherboard, recently. I think that's ridiculously low but yeah, the used board goes for $100.
I did find someone that used a T-Mobile board on AT&T Note 4 but actually stayed with AT&T rather than switching. Kind of leaves your question unanswered and still a mystery. Would he had a better result if he switched to T-Mobile and used a T-Mobile SIM? Lots of open questions there to ask; hopefully someone knows.

I mean I guess I could take a shot at it. At the very least try and call up one of the repair shops if it is only $10, but I was thinking I would be able to do it on my own, but if its anywhere close to $10, I would rather have someone with more EXP than me on it. It would be my first board replacement.
I am just itching for a better Android device at this point. I may be able to get a Pixel XL from work in about a month, but this crappy ALCATEL tab is really getting to me. Ive done everything I can to boost performance, but its just junk. Pretty sure my Raspberry Pi 3 runs better than it does.
Even though Ill be getting a new device through work in a short time, I still really liked my GN4. Awesome phone. Didnt really wanna junk it if I didnt have to. I appreciate your reply. Ill see what I can find. If I do end up going for the swap, Ill reply here and let everyone know. Ill probably XPost to the T-mobile variant too.
EDIT: just looked up the shop you mentioned, and the closest is in Wichita. About 160 miles from me. Kinda sucks, but on the plus side, my job will have me travel to there at some point, but it may not be until around July at the earliest.

ATTN: people who blame brickers for rise of TEP

While I cant say that people that brick havent affected the TEP prices, I can say I think a big part of it is sprints fault.
Today I filed my first TEP claim with sprint since I have been with them (late 09-early 10).
My headphones were cutting in and out so I replaced them, and it still happened. I took it to sprint and they said they dont have many parts for our phone.
They didnt even bother to take it apart they just ordered me another phone. This is a waste of money for something like a headphone jack not working, and just giving me another phone. This is the reason the costs are going up.

Someone told me since these phones are getting so complex little things like replacing the screens would cost them more than ordering a new phone. I might be wrong tho. I remember sprint loved to take apart my og epic.

lmao did that alot when i had a mogul and it kept messing up. Remember though they arent just gonna toss your old phone when u get the new one, it will go to a repair facility to get refurbed then out to the next customer.
Too late now (and it may have voided the warranty trying to fix it), but unless the actual jack was broken, Deoxit probably would have taken care of it.
Love that stuff.
[duh me.. it's a contact cleaner. same stuff that cleans guitar jacks/knobs from all of the bar smoke and spilled beer]
Lol, this thread tickles me.
What do you really think we're going to do with your exchanged phone, just toss it?
Its going back to the warehouse, the jack will be fixed, then shipped to a store. Only difference from it being fixed in store is shipping.
I would be glad if I were you. You know, we could be like Verizon, and say it doesn't warrant an exchange, so instead ship it off to get fixed.
The truth be told, the issue of not having parts for this phone is not a problem, but rather a symptom: sprint doesn't have much money to spend with vendors, and one of the results is that I and all my other fellow techs have had to be very resourceful when it comes to fixing phones; consider we haven't gotten new parts for a phone that is any newer than the EVO Shift

I wasnt complaining, it was more just to state that it seems like a waste of money.
Hell even the bricked phones Im sure they could salvage a lot of it, the screen and other parts would be useful.
I guess when I went into the store I was expecting a on the spot fix. Why dont they keep referbs in store?
You know, I had a similar thing happen. My soft keys, or whatever they are, werent working very well, so I figured they would replace the screen. The problem was the ribbon cable on the bottom of the screen that connects to the keys. Instead they gave me a brand new phone.....a new one, not a refurb. It had never been activated before.
TEP isn't going up because of people breaking their phones, it's going up to cover the latest devices being $550+.
Also, what you did isn't a "claim".

Since you brought up prices, its interesting to point out that I noticed at best buy the retail for this phone is $699 or $749,while the sprint store was $499. I would guess that it is because sprint gets them cheaper because its directly with the manufacturer?
And I said claim because when I looked up the coverage, it says you are allowed up to 3 claims a year I thought. Or is that for like broken screens?
And why wouldn't sprint send my phone for an example to samsung under the 1 year warranty (I think) and save them some money?
Tep is only going up for new lte devices with a full retail price of $549.99 or higher. It will be $11/mo and a $150 deductable. All current phones will stay at $8/mo and only new lte phones with a msrp lower than $549.99 will stay at the current $8/mo with a $100 deductible
Sent from my MB855 using Tapatalk 2
A. We do keep refurbished phones, but maybe the didn't have one.
B. We harvest the crap out of returns in your case, we will take it apart and harvest everything but the jack and the motherboard.
C. Lately, it seems Samsung has been doing some of their own refurbished , because they come in a different box.
D. Yes TEP is going up thanks to the phones being more expensive.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Its also not so much the cost of phones going up. Its the amount of devices at that cost level being sold now. The more high cost phones sold the higher the chance if a high cost claim. Like any insurance they reevaluated and adjusted.
^^ what he said. I work for Sprint too, i run the largest ASC (repair center) in our region, and the way we work is this: if your phone is broke, we attempt to repair it using either Sprint-supplied parts, aftermarket parts, or parts harvested from devices that were exchanged through the Advanced Exchange program- all of this is covered under TEP, but if you don't have it, we then charge you $35. If we can't fix it, we order a replacement. If it's liquid damaged, smashed, spider-cracked, or lost, w refer you to Asurion to file a claim (which is an extended feature of TEP) and then you pay a deductible. If you bricked it, then it's a case-by-case basis (TIP: dont be a condescending a-hole who knows everything, and don't lie to us).
Some phones we simply can't get parts for from Sprint, so we have to order from a 3rd party (e.g. Global Direct), or rely solely on having a harvest-able device on hand. So when we exchange a device for a customer, we hold onto it for 14 days and we use it to harvest parts from part-for-part as needed, then ship it back to the warehouse. We can't stockpile harvested parts, as we are required to replace the parts we take with the defective ones (or else we get charged back).
Whoever said we just hard reset and say have a nice day must've had a bad experience somewhere, because at our store, we take our work pretty seriously. Our goal isn't to be super-techs, but rather make you so happy that you'll take that survey call that's generated a couple days after the service and answer it with a "very satisfied". Our jobs depend on those customer satisfaction surveys (CSAT's), and any response less than a "very satisfied" is a failing score for the particular tech who fixed your phone. Those CSAT survey scores keep us up at night, and is the bane of our very existence. So please, if we fixed your device, help us keep our jobs.
I can't speak for other ASC's, but it wouldn't surprise me if there are a few techs out there who aren't that good, but hey, you get that in EVERY company. Don't go in acting like we need to lick your sack because you're super important and can't be without a phone for the 30 mins we need to work on it. Don't treat us like we're idiots because YOU dropped your phone in a mud puddle. Don't get pissed at us because you forgot your Google account password and expect us to be able to magically figure it out. We want to help you. Help us help you.
But yeah, the price change on TEP is due to the rising cost of the bleeding-edge devices that are coming out, the cost of our Network Vision roll-out, and i am totally guessing here, but to re-coop on the overhead of having unlimited data.
Tep is going up because the iPhone came to sprint. Watch for Verizon double data promo to end once iPhone lte comes out. The phone is a game changer for these networks

He must...I definitely enjoy stockpiling harvested parts at my corporate store
Though, seriously, we need to. Sprint has hung us put to dry with a lack of new parts; bins full of harvested parts is the only way to keep under that exchange rate. Especially with HTC touchscreens lately...

I'm curious, does TEP now cover iPhone? I had the impression when iPhone first came out, TEP wasn't available for it. Then I think a month or so ago, I read rumors that they were planning on having TEP cover iPhone.

Am I the unluckiest hardware owner ever? (VZW hate incoming)

Anyone ever have just... an Incredibly (no pun intended) bad time with hardware?
Here I am on my 4th device in 13 months.
It started when I allowed a best buy mobile rep talk me into the moto x2.
Phone #1 had a bum USB dock that wouldn't transfer data.
X2 numero dos had a proclivity to stutter all the time...root fixed that but then the headphone jack comes loose and all is broken.
X2 #3 same as #2 for headphone jack issues.
I fought long and hard and vzw offered me a slew of 4g devices which I chose a droid charge from.
But oops, cannot change a 3g device for a 4g device on warranty so now I get to choose from a myriad of garbage moto phones (wow a droid 3 or original x!) Or an incredible 2.
Now here I am with an incredible 2.
This came after I was offered and early upgrade over Christmas which I said no to, because I was five months invested in my current phone, why should I spend another $200 five months in??
Instead I called retentions and complained loudly and I got a pre owned incredible 2.
This phone has been an absolute dream. Even stock it is faster than than the x2s dual core CPU.
But getting this device in January I was warned that I am still in the moto x2 warranty period ending July 5th.
July 6th my phone started overheating and my screen will not light up with any images, just a dull black which I can still unlock answer etc.
Yeah. Freaking July 6th.
Now it happens just having it in my pocket.when it cools down all is good again...
As a last resort today being out of warranty anyhow I took the phone apart entirely, I took the motherboard assembly off and used compressed air to blow as much as I could behind the heat sync but this is just a broken phone I suppose because after reassembly it still isn't working.
So..long story longer, I went to a corporate store and they tell me I have two options, pay $500+ for a new device or get a second line and change to share everything for $50 more per month...
Or call 611.. which I do.
They tell me that I can pay $500+ or add a line (it'd be an extra $600/year I remind him) and he says sorry.
He can offer me an early upgrade that I'm asking for in March.
I said to him gee thanks, you are not really helping me, the website tells me exactly the same thing. Derrrrr. Dumb.
Basically, i was offered an early upgrade in December by a lackwitted tier 2 tech support agent and now because I didn't have $200 for a phone I knew would be severely updated I am being shaken down for a new handset.
I'm pretty upset to be honest, as I spend over $130/month with these guys and they just won't work with me.
So the conversation ends with me saying that since att has their own 4g where I live and that makes them an option for me, let's do math:
See, previously Verizon was the only service here that worked well. now I hear that att 4g covers here quite well...
$230 to cancel Verizon early
$200 for a brand new phone on att
------
$430
Vs the $569.00 for a galaxy nexus I wanted to get for $99 early upgrade.
Actually less after I get $50-$100 for spare parts on eBay for this incredible 2...
Assinine and no way to do business at all.

So I bought this on August 7th and have had no issues with it. I plan to use it until its dead (2 or 3 more years). I love my dinc 2.
I don't see a good reason to upgrade, even if I could. The newer phones are just faster, and have better displays, NTM the short battery life and that they break in 6 months.

Welcome to Verizon my friend, I had to literally swear at a Verizon rep to replace my 3rd Droid X2 with the Inc2 and this was after they said they didn't have any available and I called them out because they had started a promo on their website THAT SAME DAY for inc2's. I swear they train their employees to not help customers at all.
Thanks so much for the replies guys.
honestly I love the phone...I wanted a galaxy nexus, and am offering to start my co tract over again on their new terms where it isn't unlimited.
These people should be happy that they get me on another two years of my life and now get to charge me more money for service.
You all would love how I ended the call;
(After pointing out they encouraged me to cancel vs helping me)
" Well I honestly hope that for quality reasons this call was recorded and you made notes so tomorrow when I call back they can know exactly why I'm cancelling service. Thanks for having me be a part of Verizon wireless and have a great day!"

The x2 had major memory management issues for all of the 2.2 releases. It would not stream music, or play any music for that matter without skips, crackles, hiccups and pops.
The tegra 2 had NOTHING to do with it, aside from some pretty looking games (that always get ported to other devices) it would not use the second core anyhow as android 2.2 and 2.3 as far as i know do not use multi core cpus efficiently.
the hardware issues killed me. The headphone jack coming unsoldered TWICE is a poor build quality.
I've no idea if Google intends to put their name on a product that Moto makes after purchasing the mobility department but they should think twice because the ONLY phone i have read good reviews on is the Aria HD and thats one phone out of what... four years worth of handsets?

My problem is that I live in a largely rural area, but a town of around 20,000 that is covered by whatever Reno has.
If reno NV has LTE, we have it. If they have 3g, we have it.
But in lake tahoe you cannot build a new cellular tower due to environmental concerns, therefore you work with what you have.
Verizon has a great deal with the casinos in the area and therefore has coverage EVERYWHERE.
Like i said, i was TOLD that att and their LTE is much better than their 3g was, but i know for a fact people around here on ATT hate it.
Tmobile is a joke and works only on main drags of streets, and sprint is about as bad as Tmobile.
So as all the new networks come online they cannot build new towers here, just work with what they got. The broader spectrum of LTE seems to help the signal for ATT, and the coverage VZW has due to being the first provider gives them the best network over all.
Sucks... but yea.
Had 4 Droid x2s before my incredible2. Music always popped and phone would reboot randomly all the time. So glad I pushed Verizon until they gave me this phone. The problems it has are very little when compared to x2.
Sent from my Incredible 2 using xda premium
Yea the X2 had amazing potential but in the end it failed, locked boot loader, couldn't play music for sh*t, the 2nd core wasn't utilized very well, low graphic memory, etc, etc
That sucks man. I would look more into ATT if I were you. If it seems like the people you know have just as bad of experiences with them then i would just keep calling VZW until they offer you something better. I usually use a line like "I've been dealing with this issue for x amount of time and nobody that I have spoken with has even acknowledged the problems that I have already gone through! What can you do to make me feel like I should stay with your company?" Don't waste your breath on the regular care reps, the can't do much for you. Talk to loyalty/retentions. That line got me $400 worth of free products and movie channels when dish network lost amc and has worked on many other occasions. Shift the focus to all of the problems you have had with your phones and the fact that you don't feel like a valued customer instead of focussing just on the phone you have now.
Best of luck man. I hope this helps!

I don't think you have bad luck...I have replaced quite a few devices myself and never abuse them.
I do buy the insurance though thru vzw because I live in Vegas. It gets hot here and puts stress on the phones. I also change my synthetic oil every 5k instead of 8k because of the weather.
The good news is that if you want to stay on vzw you can buy on Craigslist to save a bit of money. Eventually when I feel there is a more solid phone I will do this (the latest phone has never been important to me)
Verizon has been terrible as of late. Another one of my family lines also has insurance and I don't even want to begin with the last issue i had with that claim.
In Vegas we have shops that can actually fix phones for you...have you considered this route?

Yes and no... I can't be without the handset and have no other phone.
I remember Vegas. Cellular depot on sahara was great for fixing phones.
Yeah, I'm in lake Tahoe now. There aren't any repair shops here so sending out is what happens.
If this was an att phone popping a sim out would be easy.
Perhaps a trip to reno would find me a repair person... in the past I'd spend hours with the company arguing my point. Now I don't have time between work and family.

if anyone is still looking
So here are the end results.
1. Verizon did offer me an early upgrade last november or december.
-- And now because they "lost too much money" they have decided to stop early upgrades for users. So basically I am screwed in this regard. I found it laughable and even told the rep how Verizon posted over a BILLION DOLLAR PROFIT recently, she seemed like she had no idea what that even meant.
2. Even retentions is not willing to work with me on this. The circumstances are not allowing for it, according to the rep I spoke to (pretty much his exact wording)
3. They are offering this:
OPTION #1 - Get a certified pre owned device for $329 (this would be a motorola razr or less money would give me a bunch of garbage options)
OPTION #2 - Add a line, and this will give me the ability to get a new phone as a new contract phone. But of course adds about $600/year to my contract
OPTION #3 - Buy a new device off the internet, beware of stolen phones, apparently verizon keeps a blacklist of stolen devices.
OPTION #4 - Spend the $500+ on a new device from VZW new retail in box.
I am so frustrated. Guess that i am screwed. They dont care.
id probably leave verizon in your situation. though, id leave anyway, so maybe that suggestion is a little bit slanted.
if you aren't going to leave, id try to find something on ebay.

Yeah anytime a phone is reported lost or stolen the esn is blacklisted. If you buy one local (like Craigslist) make the person meet you at a VZW store so you can have them check the esn before you pay for it. If you buy one online make sure the place you buy it from is reputable and has some buyer protection built in.

Don't buy a phone that doesn't list the status of the esn. Just leaving that out is grounds for suspicion.

[Q] Question on what Note 2 to Buy for Bell Canada

I have done some forum reading and have learned a lot from it (I think...) but I still have some remaining questions seeing as some of the posts are old and I'm sure things have changed by now.
Some things I have learned, correct me if I'm wrong.
SGH-i317M:
- Model provided by Bell
- LTE
- Up to 75Mb - 150mb Depending on towers
N7105:
- LTE
- Uses more battery in LTE mode
- Up to 75Mb - 150mb Depending on towers
N7100:
- NOT LTE
- Up to 21Mb to 45Mb Depending on towers
The thing is I live in Fredericton NB Canada and after looking over the Bell Tower Map there are no towers around me that are faster then a 21Mb to 45Mb. and knowing Bell it will be years before there is any here... With that in mind I have come to an unfortunate conclusion that LTE would be useless to me at this time. So I'm thinking of get a N7100. (correct me if I'm making the wrong choice)
The question I have about the N7100 are:
- Will it work with Bell Canada?
- Will it have better Battery life because it doesn't have LTE?
- Any one know where to buy one in Canada?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give!
No Canadian Note 2 users out there?

Yes N7100 will work for Canada. As for battery life note 2 already has a big mah capacity. I'm using N7100 with Rogers right now. I got mines locally so prices will vary. But should be in the $600 range

I just went to buy my N7100 at Newegg.ca and now there sold out... They had some yesterday there gos that idea... :crying:
Ok, Enough Crying. What is the current story on SGH-i317M?
For some reason Rogers sell it for $650 but Bell if $730 for the same phone.. What the hell is up with that?
So looks like I'll have to buy the Rogers one, I assume it can be rooted to work on the Bell Network?
What has the ROM action been like as of late for the "SGH-i317M"? I know in older post people where saying there was not much support, is that still the same?
http://www.expansys.ca/samsung-gala...tphone-16gb-gray-unlocked-850-1900-3g-236052/ (It says $675 on front page but its $650 + shipping when u add to cart)
No idea why Bell has a higher price one. Just unlock the phone and it can be used with any of the carriers.
Was just about to order that one from expansys.ca then I seen it is out of stock looks like I'm back to the SGH-i317M again.
You can try this $625 + shipping instock atm lol
http://canadagsm.ca/SAMSUNG/Samsung-Galaxy-Note-II-N7100/
Get Bell version if you need lte. Get N7100 if you want better roms.
I got N7100 for the better roms and mods. All data plans suck in Canada. Too small for Lte.

Just ordered it from there and selected the Gray Model then I get an email after order saying there shipping me the White one... I emailed them back to change it I hope they don't send me white. I don't want white and I ordered a Black case to mach the Gray one from another company last night....
Ok, time to think ahead and seeing as I'm getting some good help here
I know about rooting and all that stuff (I rooted my last 2 phone) and I'm sure I'll figure that stuff out later...
but, I have never bought a "Unlocked" phone before dose that mean I can just place my old SIM from my SGS2 (that I will cut down with tin snips :good . in the N7100 and it will just work? or will I have to install a cretin ROM or Radio to make it work on my existing Bell Plan?

Yes u can just take out your old SIM card from SGS2, just make sure its MicroSim. No need to install any special ROM/Radio
So... I received the phone today from canadagsm.ca and not only is it the wrong model it's the SGH-i317M (I ordered the N7100) and on top of that it's was USED! It still had some ones old SIM in it... So I'm sending it back, there paying for shipping back (we will see if that happens...) And they said they will send me the right phone "IF" they have it. other wise they will give me a refund. I think I should just get a refund ether way I don't trust them at all now, and I would recommend no one buys from them. I see other people in the internet saying they got used phones from them too.

It's not you fault I should have gone with my Gut and not my Heart. My Gut said "This company looks sketchy" and my heart just wanted the phone.
I have now called them 3+ times in the past 9 hours and it is always the same lady on the phone and she always sounds frantic. Like her world is crashing around her (witch it will be if I don't get 100% of my money back..) she keeps saying she will email me a shipping label but it has been over 8 hours and still nothing...
If I had to guess I would bet that this company is actually a Cell Booth in a Mall and they are selling refurbished phones as new ones (and for the same price as new ones!) and are also doing online internet sales too.
Looks like I'll be waiting a lot longer for my phone now then I wanted :crying:
They sent me a return shipping label! Fingers crossed :fingers-crossed: I get my money back. I still don't trust them...
I see Newegg.ca got the N7100 back in, I just ordered one from them. I have ordered many times from Newegg and they have always been good and safe.
If you are in lte area, i317 definitely worth for speed.
But Samsung canada sucks over updates.
Not even multiwindow update has been released.
If you are not in Lte area, N7100 is best option, considering battery life and on time updates.
Note 2 rocks.

Scary
I got my n7100 from expansys.ca and use it on the Virgin Mobile network (Bell). To be honest, I don't care for lte as data plans are so small and I consume over 60gb of data per month on my phone, so the advantages of s faster Internet are hampered by a small bandwidth allowance.

I shiped out my Phone on Monday. They received it on Wednesday and Paypal sent me an Email saying there is a Pending Refund from them for the FULL amount! I have to wait till next Friday to make sure I get the money, but it's looking really good so far! Thank goodness, that is a lot of money to be out, the wife would kill me. :crying:
I got my N7100 from Newegg yesterday and it is awesome! Thanks you Newegg for not trying to scamming me!
I cut down my BELL Sim Card with tin-snips and a box cutter, put it in and everything worked! Things are really starting to look up. I also got the update for dual screen witch the Canadian phones don't even have yet.
I never rooted it yet. (no need to where everything worked) but there are some things I don't like, that rooting might change so I might in the not to far future.
I'd like to thanks everyone for there help. I'm sure you'll hear from me soon enough with more questions.

[Q] Broken Glass, ATT insurance, matters of opinion(update in op)

Ok lets get this out of the way first. Yes my glass broke second day of owning, yes I was being careful and wasn't neglect on my part. Phone should have been able to survive a fall from less then 12" only landing on its back with out breaking glass.
Ok now that we got that taken care of here are my options.
1. Buy $30.00 glass attempt repair on my own. Question with this are if I mess up or something gets damaged could I still claim insurance(ie. will they know I have opened phone)
2. Att states they will replace for $199.99 but will likely be refurbished unit(which sucks). If I go this route will I need to flash back to stock and reset flash count or will they even check that. Rooted with custom recovery and att clean rom. Any one had experience with att insurance claim?
Local shops say its impossible to replace just the glass. Repair would be $425.00 so that is out.
Edit: I tried to call the walmart I purchased it from and got no answer. So I called another walmart and told her what happened. She said we are told we can't exchange phones that are damaged and you only get one exchange. So I thought I was screwed. She then said read your contract if it doesn't say anything about the condition of the phone or the number of times Walmart will have to replace phone. She kept emphasizing to read contract. Then said if I have any problems Call her back and she will call corporate. Sure enough contract states you can exchange phones in the 14 days nothing about condition or number of times. So following walmarts contract I got the note replaced. As of today if anything thing happens I have insurance. I also bought a temporary case till otterbox gets here.
Re: [Q] Broken Glass, ATT insurance, matters of opinion
I've dealt with att twice and it was agreeable. The second time I sent my note 1 in for the same issue (charging port failure) they sent me a brand new device. The truth is you don't always get a refurb, it's just kind of luck and how much product is on hand (so I was told by att cs).
If you try to fix the screen yourself and fail DON'T send it in for warranty... That's fraud and effects the prices for everyone else.

The customer is always right...
Sorry about your shattered screen. that's rough. hope I can offer some insight on your warranty situation:
You have two angles of attack:
1. Go in with your tail tucked between your legs, and pray for the best possible outcome. If the outcome is less than optimal, follow step 2:
2. Argue pleasantly, until you're satisified.
That said, at&t is usually pretty good with succumbing to "motivated" customers. I've always tried, and with great sucess, gotten all of my replacements by contacting them through e-mail or phone (and a few times at the service centers). My own personal experience has lead me to believe, if you go in, they're more likely to scrutinize you, your credability and your story and stick you with the least desirable option. My brother-in-law is a very "motivated" customer, and has almost always been "satisifed" by at&t (that's what she said) (shattered screens, water submersion, etc).
And as far as relocking\returning to stock, again, IME, I've only had them check my device for root/BL tampering twice, and they simply checked to see if their was a stock recovery. And I think it was only because the kid was knowledgable enough to know how to check. Otherwise, I've always gotten the impression the sales person doesn't know how to check for evidence of a tampered device.
If Steps 1 and 2 fail, try droping the, ETF-bomb. "How much is my Early Termination Fee?" In my experience, they always come back with good news from their supervisor. YMMV. And just as an FYI, when I have dropped the ETF-bomb, I had legitmately wanted to end my service; I wasn't threatening.
Good luck and hope some of this was useful to you! like I said, YMMV.
PS. If you go into one service center and they give you your options, that doesn't stop you from leaving with your device and getting a "second opinion" from another, possibly more agreeable service center. And then if you care to, as a last resort, you can always try contacting them through e-mail\phone.

Good advice all the way around, all though not too sure about ETF because I'm still on my new contract 14 days. Not sure how they would take that. I also thought about see what Walmart would do since that is where the phone was purchased do to pricing. With the screen not sure how they would handle that can't find anything on the web about the return policy for store bought phones.

Well then, you just opened up your options - try a bunch of different Wal-marts. One of them is bound to have a lackluster employee who doesn't care, and just wants to go back to doing nothing - find that guy\gal and bring home your new N2.
If there is no physical damage to the body of the phone, you have better support to your story that the screen was flawed. I would really fight that point, that the screen was flawed.
Honestly, they don't have a leg to stand on, if there is no physical evidence to the body of the phone that it was "accidental damage", and they're not going to call you a liar (at least not to your face). With all of this, keep in mind to "argue" as politely as possible, but be persistent. Wear them down and get to yes! Illegitimi non carborundum.
---------- Post added at 01:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:54 PM ----------
And yeah, as far as the ETF-bomb, it may not help if you're only 14 days into your contract. I've been with at&t since 2002 and I have 3 lines, so, that may factor in on their decision with the ETF-bomb.
I was with att for ten years when they decided to move out my upgrade date out of now where claiming it was because of a data overage. I was out of contract ready for renewal the didn't give a S*** about me canceling. I went to Verizon and it was a nightmare had 4 gig limit and they where charging me overage at 3.5 gig. Fought with them for about 3 months before I was able to use breach in contract with a supervisor to get out with out a ETF. Now I'm back at ATT and had this happen.

thaaaaat sucks.
Move out your upgrade date because of data overage? weird. that makes no sense to me.
Here's a possible option: it's $200 and you have to return your current device or, is it $200 for a new device and you keep your shattered device? If it's the latter, then possibly sell the current N2 as-is on eBay\craigslist and use that money to purchase replacement? I am inclined to believe it is probably $200 + returning current N2.

The said thing about the overage was it was due to their lack luster dsl department getting our dsl turned on at the new house. Seemed that the old tenant had some cheap phone service and never turned it off. They wanted $800.00 to run new lines. So we where using phones as all internet for a month. I'm pretty sure that I will have to return device, once the other comes in. I'm going to try walmart first, then if that doesn't work see if I can talk the deductible down on the att insurance and hope its not a refurbished. I have had to many android and iphones(wife) that have been through three young boys with out damage and this one damages so easy. Either way new device will not be fully used till it is safe in a case then still treated like a baby.
Bonne chance!

I didn't see this mentioned but I recommend getting the insurance protection from Best Buy. You can still get it even if you don't get the phone from Best Buy. You can pay one flat fee to cover the year or pay $7 a month.
They will replace your phone at no extra cost for physical or water damage.

Very much aware of that. Had it on my Galaxy nexus gave it to my mom she dropped it hard cracked the screen now she is waiting for her refurb to come in. They told me it was replaced at the store when I brought it in, with new unit. I have had to loan her my inspire while she waits 5-10 days for the other to come in. Not really satisfied with that plan either.
Re: [Q] Broken Glass, ATT insurance, matters of opinion
That's weird. I've had to have 3 devices replaced through best buy over the last couple of years. I've never had to wait more than 3 days. I Also like that you get a loaner phone till the replacement comes in.

I asked for a loaner they said they don't do that.
Edit: Hoping my inspire doesn't suffer same fate.
Re: [Q] Broken Glass, ATT insurance, matters of opinion
I'm actually a manager at a best buy mobile.. We are supposed to supply loaners if we have them with a $50 deposit that you get back when your phone comes back in.. Some stores don't charge that even though they should.. For android devices the insurance is $9.99 a month or $169.99 for 2 years.. Everything is covered except lost or stolen.. Which we do have a free app called locked and found that will let you lock your phone out if it is lost or stolen. It will take pictures with the front facing camera and email them to you with a location.. The best part is there are unlimited claims and no deposit

I would but we don't have those here.
You should not be concerned AT ALL that you may get a refurbished phone. I've done it couple of times and the phone is always perfect brand new condition. It's not like it will have scuffs on it or non-working parts....not to worry.
Also don't need to reset your phone to stock...you're getting it replaced due to broken screen not complaints that it is not functioning.

SGH-T999L Bad ESN

I bought an almost new S3 LTE SGH-T999L for my son off CL. It checked OK on swappa and it worked for a week, then unable to connect to network. Swappa now says blacklisted. DOH!
It sucks to have a $350 paper weight! I tried to contact the seller with no luck.
Couple questions...
Any way to fix it?
Can this model be downgraded to 4.1.1 to use free unlock method and even then will it possibly work on anther carrier is the US. I know it will work outside the US if unlocked.
I contacted T-Mobile and they said nothing I can do, only the original owner can have the blacklist lifted.
Any help or advice much appreciated!
Also let this be a lesson to all...just because it works when you buy it, don't mean it wont go belly-up in a week. :crying:
Sorry I didn't answer your PM before. Wasn't ignoring you. Unfortunately your options are extremely limited.
You will have to pay for an unlock code online (see the last couple pages of the unlock thread), and then sell overseas. Just please be honest about it to whoever you sell it to in case they plan on bringing it to the states.
Personally, I'd also file a police report. May not come to anything, but if the guy gets arrested for anything else, or enough people file a report against him for similar stuff, you may then have some recourse against him. But he has twice committed fraud, or theft by deception (or something like that). First against T-Mobile, then against you.
Once unlocked, it might work on other carriers here, but not for long. I'm told all US carriers will be sharing the same blacklist by year's end. I've also heard it may also be shared with Canadian carriers as well.
Sorry to hear that happened to you. You're definitely not alone! This happens all the time, unfortunately.
Never buy used unless you make the transaction in person at a T-Mobile store where the seller can prove they have paid for the device in full and are allowed to sell it. Also, have a note made on both accounts (preferably by a manager) that the sale is made so they can't report it stolen a few weeks later.

I hear you, but it never goes down like that. I've bought and sold 30 or 40 smartphones. First time I've ever got burnt. I make small profit along, but this one is a stinger. I've had people want to meet me at Verizon, ATT and T-Mobile and every time I met them there all the store employees would say is if the sim card works it's ok.
Of course you could ask for a receipt...but what if it's a reseller like myself? I've had one receipt the whole time. Most of the time you can spot a fraud and steer clear. I check esn on swappa and/or Verizon site. I guess it's just a risky thing and I've been very lucky so far.
I did get a guy on ebay to unlock the phone for $10 last night. It works with a Lycamobile sim(T-Mobile reseller) and also works with a new LTE ATT Straight Talk sim...recieves LTE even. Maybe not for long...but it works fine now and it's been blacklisted about a month.
Guy on ebay unlocks clean phones for $5 & blacklisted for $10, he does remote into your pc to do it, but it only takes 2-3 minutes. He gave me the code, but it was never needed.
I'm a PagePlus dealer and I do alot of carrier flashing, not to beat blacklist, but to get more use from older 3G devices. Anytime I sell a phone I always give a 2 days return policy if they change their mind.
The seller of the phone should be able to get some sort of confirmation off of his own account showing he is not currently making payments on it. If the employees are only saying to see if the SIM works, they are just being lazy or ignorant! With the owners permission they can look it up, or call support from the phone and have him ask them to verify on speaker so you can hear. I'm just trying to say there's other ways to get the info before buying.
I'd say that if you've bought that many you are pretty lucky. But for the blacklisted one that worked on other carriers...expect it not to on AT&T very soon and all other US carriers around the end of the year. Right now T-Mobile and AT&T share their lists, but don't use the same one, so it'll often take a few weeks to catch up. As I understand it, once the national list is in place, all carriers will be using the same one so it'll be more instant.
I have spoken to a few people who bought their phone used and all seemed good, but then nearly 2 months later it got blacklisted! Some people are apparently selling it, but then waiting a month or two to report it stolen!
I just hope that if one of your customers gets blacklisted a few weeks after buying from you, you will be willing to at least exchange it.
But before you try and sell this one, please consider that it's practically a given that it's not gonna work for very long.
Also, (and I'm not sure of the ramifications here) keep in mind that you are knowingly in possession of stolen property. That by itself is probably not a big deal for you, legally speaking, since it happens to so many people and hardly no one knows what they are buying when this happens to them. But if you sell it, you will be knowingly selling stolen goods. If one of your customers gets blacklisted, you could be the one held liable.
Don't take it wrong, I'm just trying to help!
And I'm just curious, what do you mean by "carrier flashing"?

I understand where you're coming from and I will not sell this phone except to one particular customer who takes them outside the country. My son is using it now on LycaMobile which is a UK based reseller using T-Molile towers. We will see how long it lasts...strange circumstance there since the provider is not from the US, will they also adhere to universal blacklist? I dunno...time will tell. At $30 per month they are cheapest unlimited I know of(Only 50MB 4G data, then 2G/3G).
I run a legitimate part time business and have rarely had phones returned, but always made the customer happy. Happy customers come back and most of my profit is selling refills and flashing/rooting/unlocking...not the actual phone sales.
Carrier flashing: Mainly I've flashed older Metro phones to work on PagePlus and GS3's from Sprint or Verizon must be flashed for pageplus because they don't yet allow 4G phones. I never do any ESN changes. I'm an old techie and I go way back to Nextel mods in mid 90's. lol
BTW I installed CM 10.1.2 RC2 right from the phone yesterday after originally flashing the CM10 linked in Doc's T999L thread. It flashed perfect right through CM update utility automatically and seems to run perfectly.
