I haven`t done any flashing for a while since it took so long for stock Nougat OTA to come to my european HTC 10.
Can someone tell me if it is possible to flash custom TWRP recovery and root now and is it the same procedure ?

Hi, I'm a long time Android enthusiast, owning, rooting and modding a Nexus 4, LG Optimus V, and Honor 5X. However, the HTC 10 is really confusing to me because of its new Nougat update.
I currently have a US Unlocked HTC 10 with a freshly unlocked bootloader, S-On. I was wondering if I should root it with TWRP Recovery, and install an RUU to keep root, or is that not how it works? I'm jut very confused as to how to keep root going into the Nougat update. Thanks
Thats not how it works.
When you use an RUU, it will not keep root. It will wipe your device full factory reset.
I dont really recommend the 7.0 update just yet as there is no TWRP for it.
Since you are S-ON, you wont be able to downgrade back to 6.0.
You CAN root 7.0 using Magisk if you need to.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/development/root-magisk-autoroot-magisk-phhs-t3507505
If Still you want to upgrade, then you should S-OFF FIRST.. so you can downgrade if you want. You can NOT S-OFF from 7.0 yet, and you can not downgrade without S-OFF, so it's a one way ticket if you don't S-OFF first. (for now.)
You cant really Keep root (AKAIK), you'll have to re-root after each update. Here is what I usually do (excluding the 7.0 update for now because there is no TWRP Yet)
1) Flash TWRP.
2) Backup System Image / Boot (Clean - before root).
3) Flash the latest SuperSU to root.
4) When there is a new OTA update, boot to TWRP, restore the Last Clean System Image / Boot images.
5) Flash Latest Stock Recovery.img. (You'll need to find it, or extract it from an OTA Zip)
6) Boot to Rom, Install OTA.
7) Repeat Steps 1-3

Is Sunshine still the only way to S-OFF? If so, is it still a paid option?

As far as I know, Yes and Yes.
I was getting along fine without it, until I upgraded to 7.0 and wanted to go back... now I'm stuck.

I see. Seems as it it'd be better to wait for a confirmed root / twrp method for 7.0 first for a guranated method. Thank you, some of these terms are new to me....

I think there are many of us that are in this situation, I will be waiting patiently for a fix to the TWRP issue with 7.0 and then will enjoy the ride...
Sent from my HTC 10 using Tapatalk
Yep, same here. The best option is to wait for Captain Throwback to get TWRP spruced up for Nougat. Flash Nougat then flash TWRP.

Oh yeah, good point lol. Would need to flash an older boot combination I guess. Way to dangerous for most, this is why I s-off first and mess around after. I imagine TWRP won't be long anyway
Hey, I've decided to convert my phone to WWE, but I'd like to avoid unlocking bootloader through htcdev and I also want to backup my stock rom, since it's polish tmobile so not commonly available. Shall I just perform the steps from this thread, but only from 6th step, and after S-OFF that temp-rooted the phone just root and install TWRP and then perform the backup?
Any help would be higly appreciated
after having s-off, flahs TWRP and then DON'T ROOT yet, also ensure you keep /system readonly in TWRP..it will ask you when you open TWRP the first time.
Then go to TWRP-backup and backup the system.img and boot.img..then you got a 100% stock rom (besides stock recovery)...you could dd the recovery partition though, before flashing twrp.
now you can root your phone by flashing the latest SuperSU.zip or flash a custom rom (those are prerooted)

It depends. How did you root? Is it systemless?
There are different ways. You want an original system? Easy one, independent of your root method, is: take an original marshmallow. Flash it. You may omit erase userdata, then all you apps and data usually are being kept. Do all updates.

I had the same issue and decided to go the safe way:
First you have to restore Stock Rom, following Step 7 here (don't do the steps marked in red and you will keep all your apps and data):
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z-play/how-to/guide-root-xposed-flashing-stock-rom-t3529637
Second (very important) let your phone install all missing MM OTA's. Last one before Nougat should be from December!
Third depends on: If Nougat is available via OTA you are done. If not you have to download and sideload the correct OTA (depending on your Softwarechannel) via ADB. It's described here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z-play/how-to/moto-z-play-reteu-firmware-otas-t3557917
Last step is to root again - if you want.
Hi everyone, first time posting here.
I've recently purchased a HTC 10 from a friend. I'm looking to upgrade it to android version 7
The phone has TWRP recovery but no back up of a stock untouched ROM, ive tried looking for a stock UK H3G ROM (H3G_001) but I've been unable to find 1.
Could someone give me a little help on how to update my phone, possibly an idiot proof step by step guide. i just want the latest version available for my phone.
Thanks
Try this thread from a few weeks ago:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/help/stock-rom-required-htc-10-cid-h3g001-t3627726
Obviously you'd need a stock backup that matches the version you currently have.
Does your phone currently detect an available ota update?

there was an unexpected error and the file system may be corrupted. please contact HTC support..."

So, if your system is rooted or modified in any way, you'll need to flash a stock system backup, matching the firmware version you currently have. Then flash stock recovery, and you'd be able to take the OTA.
If your system is already untouched, you would just need to flash the stock recovery, again matching your firmware version, and then take the OTA. There is a recovery for 6.0.1 in that link, but I'm not sure if it's for your firmware version. You could try to flash it and see if the OTA works.
Thinking about it more, if you're able to download the ota I think the best thing to do is to flash the OTA using twrp manually. See instructions in the faq located in the twrp thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ht...ery-twrp-touch-recovery-t3358139/post66347165
If you follow the instructions, you should be able to take the OTA including firmware, and not have to worry about restoring anything stock first.

Thanks for the respond,
but for that I need root, which it is the problem with supersu.
I need root for Sunshine, so I can place oreo on the phone.
Do someone remember which version of Viper works with Nougat and if I need to have the phone root first before flashing the ROM.

Alright, i will ask this question.
Why do you need root? Why do you need s-off. Why can't you go back to stock and take the OTA to oreo first, hasn't t mobile released the oreo update yet?
Edit:
At least i found a ruu.exe here
https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=746010030569947237
Thanks to @ziand
That file will bring the phone to box stock and at that time you will be able to update to oreo.
