It depends. How did you root? Is it systemless?
There are different ways. You want an original system? Easy one, independent of your root method, is: take an original marshmallow. Flash it. You may omit erase userdata, then all you apps and data usually are being kept. Do all updates.

I had the same issue and decided to go the safe way:
First you have to restore Stock Rom, following Step 7 here (don't do the steps marked in red and you will keep all your apps and data):
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z-play/how-to/guide-root-xposed-flashing-stock-rom-t3529637
Second (very important) let your phone install all missing MM OTA's. Last one before Nougat should be from December!
Third depends on: If Nougat is available via OTA you are done. If not you have to download and sideload the correct OTA (depending on your Softwarechannel) via ADB. It's described here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z-play/how-to/moto-z-play-reteu-firmware-otas-t3557917
Last step is to root again - if you want.

Unable to update to Android 5.0.2

Dear all,
I hope anyone can help me. I am trying to update to the latest Android version which I got OTA today. I have rooted my device and I am running TWRP (version 2.8.5.0) since some time. (Rooted it to restore some apps using Titanium backup). When I try to update using the OTA my device boots into recovery. When I choose install and select the downloaded zip file my device gives me the following error:
E: Zip signature verification dailed: 1
Disabling the ZIP verification doesn't work as I will just get another error message.
I have tried sideloading the ROM using adb commands but so far this hasn't worked either.
Anyone can give me some directions as how to continue from here? I would really like to update my device to Android 5!
Update with solution (for me):
What worked for me was downloading the OTA update like I would normally do. Then connect the phone to the computer and copy the downloaded update file to the computer (should be located on internal memory/download/). Once you have the file on your computer extract it, and then extract the file 'firmware'. Inside this second file should be a recovery.img. If you flash this recovery to your phone (no need to unroot or relock your bootloader) you will then be able to install the update.
That's because you need stock recovery to flash OTA. It won't work with TWRP because the OTA ZIP works different than a custom ROM.
Go back to stock everything and it'll work.
Or wait a couple of days till the boys here come up with a lollipop rom.
Ok thanks a lot, that'll help me I'll let you guy know if I run into any more problems.
how revert back to stock rom

Use these two files. First restore the stock nandroid using twrp (remember to choose NO when twrp prompts you to install supersu and root rom).
After you successfully restore the backup, flash stock recovery.
That should take care of it.

in usual way of that you have to put update file in Download folder in internal memory(after that you may have to restart) and then go to setting > about > software update, checking for update and wait the way that should be.

I did that but no luck.
placed ota file in download folder then restarted the phone. Then check for update but still the same message "there are no updates available for your phone"
So i just got the ota update today the lollipop for my country (Egypt) i had phone rooted with custom recovery TWRP i tried installing the update and failed.. then i flashed the stock recovery and still fails...gone to supersu and settings and unrooted it and tried again, still fails...
relocked the bootloader and STILL fails this now got me so mad because upon every install failure i had to redownload the update (it takes a long time tho) so if anyone could help me here i will be so thankful.

Is it safe to update M8 to marshmallow?

Hi friends, I am getting notifications to update my M8 to marshmallow. Its with unlocked bootloader, rooted and with S-OFF and running stock rom.Currently its running Android 5.0.1 with Htc sense version 6.0 on a Rogers(canadian) network. Will it be safe to update it to marshmallow? Will i be able to root it afterwards?Any suggestions please? Thanks
You will need an unrooted (never rooted) stock Rogers ROM, and corresponding stock recovery, in order to update by OTA.
Otherwise, there haven't been any issues reported (such as root) with Marshmallow. Root requires a newer version SuperSU (2.51 or later), but otherwise there aren't any major issues.

Nope, unrooting won't work OTA will still fail). I specified never rooted for that reason.
You can use a TWRP backup, if you made one before rooting. Otherwise, you'll need to find a stock (unrooted) TWRP backup on the forums.

I'm not sure what you are asking. You can't run the OTA as-is, in order to return to stock ROM, if that is what you mean. This will fail for the same reason a Marshmallow OTA will fail (due to modified software) in addition that version check will probably also make it fail (you can't OTA to the same version already on the phone).
You might be able to extract the ROM for the zip file. But this can be risky, too. Its best you find a previously posted TWRP backup of the stock ROM; or ask someone to post it.

That one is probably too old. The backup needs to match your firmware (hboot, radio, etc.) or at least be close.

What part about never rooted do you not understand???
Stop trying to invent ways around it. You can dance around and cluck like a chicken if you want, it still won't make a previously rooted ROM never rooted.
You've been told the proper way to proceed.

Complete Newbie to HTC 10, Wondering about RUU, 7.0, and Root

Hi, I'm a long time Android enthusiast, owning, rooting and modding a Nexus 4, LG Optimus V, and Honor 5X. However, the HTC 10 is really confusing to me because of its new Nougat update.
I currently have a US Unlocked HTC 10 with a freshly unlocked bootloader, S-On. I was wondering if I should root it with TWRP Recovery, and install an RUU to keep root, or is that not how it works? I'm jut very confused as to how to keep root going into the Nougat update. Thanks
Thats not how it works.
When you use an RUU, it will not keep root. It will wipe your device full factory reset.
I dont really recommend the 7.0 update just yet as there is no TWRP for it.
Since you are S-ON, you wont be able to downgrade back to 6.0.
You CAN root 7.0 using Magisk if you need to.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/development/root-magisk-autoroot-magisk-phhs-t3507505
If Still you want to upgrade, then you should S-OFF FIRST.. so you can downgrade if you want. You can NOT S-OFF from 7.0 yet, and you can not downgrade without S-OFF, so it's a one way ticket if you don't S-OFF first. (for now.)
You cant really Keep root (AKAIK), you'll have to re-root after each update. Here is what I usually do (excluding the 7.0 update for now because there is no TWRP Yet)
1) Flash TWRP.
2) Backup System Image / Boot (Clean - before root).
3) Flash the latest SuperSU to root.
4) When there is a new OTA update, boot to TWRP, restore the Last Clean System Image / Boot images.
5) Flash Latest Stock Recovery.img. (You'll need to find it, or extract it from an OTA Zip)
6) Boot to Rom, Install OTA.
7) Repeat Steps 1-3

Yep, same here. The best option is to wait for Captain Throwback to get TWRP spruced up for Nougat. Flash Nougat then flash TWRP.

From Marshmallow to Nougat - What to look for?

Hey guys,
i have a rooted HTC 10 (unlocked) still on android 6. Now from time to time it acts weird so i thought i should just update.
what do i need to look for? is there root and xposed for 7? (I just need root for adblocker)
I have xposed, so i will use its uninstall script. how do i proceed from there? just OTA?
thanks!

You can root 7. There is no xposed for 7.
To take the OTA, you need to have stock system partition and recovery. Since you're already rooted and using xposed, your system partition is likely modified (did you use Magisk?) and you won't be able to take the OTA. You'd have to restore a stock system and recovery, or the cleaner way is to run an ruu for your phone.

As mentioned by Magnum it's basically a fully contained file that restores your phones partitions back to stock. You need one to match your phone software version, you can't use one that's older that what you already have installed and you can't use one made for a different phone variant/region. That's unless you're s-off which it doesn't sound like you are.
First, read up a bit more about what an ruu is. Then, check out this thread and find the appropriate ruu for your phone in this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/how-to/stock-stock-collection-recovery-ruu-ota-t3359297
Or, if you bought your phone directly from htc in the US, download the latest RUU from HTC's website.

Guide [Simple]: OTA update with rooted and unlocked

Hi,
This guide is based in my first post about how to do it with the Moto G4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4/how-to/guide-simple-ota-update-rooted-unlocked-t3510126
(Read it for full info).
Then, here the updated info for the Moto G5+:
1) If you are in NPN25.137-33 and like to apply the last OTA, but you have rooted and/or flashed a custom recovery (TWRP) + custom kernel, then you can.
2) Requirements: original SYSTEM and BOOT partitions. If you have flashed another version, then restore the originals. You can use any backups from you, or you can download from here: http://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6-Tz_7kDyxsZnVNa0pldnhndG8
(Thank you to GtrCraft: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=72387571&postcount=15)
3) To apply the OTA download this ZIP and install it from the TWRP recovery (it's not required to have the TWRP flashed, you can start it from the fastboot util): http://www.sendspace.com/file/7w75rw
This file is the original OTA (shared by the user olive23) and patched by me to remove the check for the fingerprint of the running firmware. Then it can run over the TWRP.
Warning: Don't install this OTA if you don't have the exact version of the required firmware.
4) After install the OTA, reboot and check the new version. At that point the ROM isn't rooted. Then, you need to re-root.
That's all!
Tried flashing and it fails.
You need stock recovery to flash OTA's

Isn't that the point of this post? He said he patched the OTA update so it could be flashed with TWRP.

Well the OTA isn't meant for reteu firmware. So that will bring problems with it

Because isn't for your device OR you have modified SYSTEM or BOOT.

Installing TWRP and rooting doesn't change the SYSTEM or BOOT right? Must just not be for my device then. I have the US 4gb model (XT1687)

Probably. This OTA is from user "olive23".
I don't have (still) received any OTA in my XT1685 (EU 3/32).

I have the same US model and this is supposed to be for it but it didn't work for me either, got errors during flash of OTA zip in TWRP that various partitions weren't accessible &/or verifiable. Even tried it a second time after a full restore to stock and had similar errors. I restored SYSTEM too (not sure that our rooting process works for systemless yet, meaning it would change SYSTEM), so that wasn't the problem in my case. Restored stock again and will wait to see if I get OTA normally.

So did you get this OTA normally as a system update, indicating that we should be receiving it now?

I got the update weeks ago. I've been postponing until someone makes it's flashable. I ripped it from my phone when I got it so yes, it's from my phone.

Thanks. I wonder why I haven't gotten anything and had phone since it came out on 3/31. I'm on NPN25.137-33 with a 4GB XT1687 from Amazon ($299 full-price without ads) on AT&T if carrier matters. Rooted or not we should still get the notifications as you have.

Yeah I got mine the day it came out from amazon, using on Verizon.
Here is a flashable stock zip based on reteu firmware:

U have*67 files??
Same Here
US variant XT1687 4/64GB on Sprint but no OTA notification. Maybe I should just wait another week before flashing this. Not sure if there is something in the SIM the server notices and stops updates on some carriers. But maybe the SIM is how they decide, not sure what else they could go by other than IP to detect the carrier.

I also have XT1687 4/64G US on 25.137-33 + root & TWRP, and no OTA notification.
So, is there a way to go to -67 (flash over TWRP, restore back to -15 stock)?
I could not understand the right answer from all the thread on the subject.
Sorry for this noob question: I have just rooted a brand new phone. After the first login the OTA warning popped out so I downloaded it. When finished I got a loop on the recovery; I fastbooted boot and got my phone working again ... what do I have to do? Thanks.
