Battery Draining by Android OS - Moto Z Play Questions & Answers

Hey all, I've had this phone for a while now and I've been loving the performance and the battery life.
But since yesterday a problem came up. Normally i get around 8-11 hours of Screen on time. Now some "Android OS" is draining the battery real fast like it's cutting it down to 5 hours screen on time with the same amount of usage.
I've tried closing the apps, doesn't seem to fix the problem.

Just to back up the post, Its not android system. That's different and it doesn't consume battery this much. It's something called "Android OS" and its running continuously off screen as well.

It's also using a lot of RAM :/

Try reboot, see if it goes away.

Did you talk for an hour and forty two minutes? Butt dial someone? Bad signal?

No xD i fixed it deleted all the apps. Didn't know which one was problematic but it seems to have fixed the problem. I'm actually getting double battery life now xD

My poor MZP has suddenly started showing a dramatic drop in performance and battery life. I suspect this is because of Magisto which had a setting that automatically uploads videos / photos to create movies. I've disabled this now and hope to see an improvement.
I've also deleted all apps that were very aggressive with notifications - The Domino's India app was the worst offender.
Hopefully this will make a difference.

How can I track down my battery drain?

Leaving my OP in place, but I have rewritten the description with much more detail and pics here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25401417#post25401417
I suggest skipping to there.
I am looking for general tips here. E.g., not asking you to diagnose my specific problem so much as give me ideas of what else to check or try.
Lately I have had unexplained (to me) battery drain. Yesterday I lost about 25 percent in an hour while the phone idled. It is not a constant thing, though. I can go an hour and loose 1 percent then loose massive amounts in the next hour.
Now, i have searched, but I have not found anything that applies to me.
I have:
Tried a different radio
Tried a different kernel
Reflashed my rom
Phone is entering deep sleep according to cpu spy
There are no unusual or excessive wake locks according to better battery stats
No apps are using a lot of battery.
I am in a low signal area at work, but putting the phone in airplane mode and dissabling background syn does not stop the drain.
Ideas?
might be your phone is loosing signal? i would check the battery stats in the settings menu to see if you have a poor mobile signal.

So I don't think I can blame it on that.
Do you have any exchange sync on your phone?

I do, and on reflection it is a possible culprit since I added it recently.
Didn't occur to me since it was producing no wakelocks and the battery stats did not showing as using much battery.
I shall turn it off for a bit and see if that helps. (unless there is some other way to test if it is the problem first.) I am off to the search button!

This is from yesterday when i set it down unused for about 90 minutes. The amount of wakes seems liek a lot, but it is similar to what i see when i have far far less drain, so I don't think that is the problem. I didn't get the app list screen, but out should screen as the only major drain with about 2 minutes.
I know it is shows poor signal strength, so immediately after that shot I put it in airplane mode, turned of sync, and rebooted. The battery continued to drain and graph had the exact same slope under those conditions. (Forget to get a pic though.)
Sent from my jitterbug using tapatalk.
System panel paid version with monitoring enabled is the best for tracking apps using CPU.
OK, still working on this.
To recap:
When the screen is off, and no apps are running I sometimes get inexplicable battery drain. This is occurring under conditions when I should be experiencing little or no drain at all. I say this becuase:
The screen is of and no bakground apps are running
the phone is NOT awake and IS entering deep sleep (as confirmed by cpuspy)
there are no unusual kernel or partial wake locks
there are no apps listed as using unexpected ammounts of battery
This is not a universal problem. The phone *often* behaves as expected. I can leave the phone off for an hour and see a 1% or 2% drain, and I am happy with that. However, sometimes, randomly, it goes nuts on my.
This graph from a few weeks ago shows what I mean. Look in the green box. The phone is sleeping, and the screen is off. The graph starts as a flatline, then, all of a sudden, it begins to drop precipitously.
Here is a graph that shows the battery dropping at the same rate whether the phone is awake or sleeping:
I have gone the following to try and narrow the problem down:
Done a completely fresh install of my Rom including a system wipe.
Tried two kernels (the aokp default and several relases of Franco's
Tried a different radio
Activated and installed a new sim card
I have come to suspect that the problem is network related. When the problem starts, sometimes going into airplane mode and back and/or toggling 2g only temporarily fixes the problem.
I suspect that something is happening with my connection to T-Mobile that keeps the network running and draining power. This is pure speculation, but it is all I can think of.
I installed juice defender (which I had not been previously running) and noticed the that, sometimes, it didn't turn of data when it should have. I also noticed the following two things happen:
I do not believe it is a rom problem, since if so, someone else would be reporting this. It might be an app problem, but if so the app is draining battery without a wake lock and while the phone is in deep sleep.
It is not exchange (as was suggested in this thread) since it continues when I ev my exchange account.
I have no idea what else to do or try.
Since it happens at random and takes a while to identify, uninstalling one app at a time to test for that could easily take months to narrow down a misbehaving app.
I know it is not a hardware issue since last month I got this:
That was with AOKP and Franco (earlier versions obviously)
I have google searched till my fingers bleed.
I am a long way form being an expert, and I suspect I may have overlooked something obvious.
Please, any thoughts??
Damn you definitely have a major issue and I don't know what it could be. But when my phone sleeps itstays dead flat with no awake bars, and drops 1% every 3 hours.
1. Calibrate battery
2. If you really wanna find the problem, install the rom with no mods or apps and run it and see if it still happens. Then add back each mod/app one at a time

While I appreciate your effort, this is remarkable unhelpful for the following reasons:
1. "calibrating" the battery is a myth and doesn't actually do something. Even if it did, it would not explain the symptoms I have described. I have been around xda long enough to know it is the knee-jerk reaction to any battery question, but it is not relevant here.
2. Since the problem occurs at random, and sometimes takes hours to show up, (For instance, last night I charged to full and tried to catch it happening. For 4 hours nothing happened, it behaved perfectly. Then I went to bed and it immediately started to fall and was dead by morning) and since I have over 100 apps, your suggestion could easily take *over a year* to follow. Believe me, I have thought about it, but I started this thread hoping for ideas that would allow me to avoid it.
Here is that chart for last night.
I had about 1 hour and 30 minutes screen on time with 65% left when I went to bed. When I woke up, phone was dead.

Mine often does that. But sometimes it doesn't. It is the fact that it happens seemingly at random that makes it so annoying and hard to track down.
I would replace the battery
One thing you haven't rulled out is that the battery itself is bad.
Have a friend you could swap with for a day, or at least long enough to see if the problem follows? If your battery drops on their phone that is also a good indication.

The thought has occurred to me, but unfortunately, no, I don't have a friend I can swap with. And really, since I have had the phone less than 3 months, the battery *shouldn't* be bad, but yeah, defective products happen.
If I cannot find any other cause I will likely order a new battery and see if that fixes it.

1. yes battery calibration does make a difference.
2. ok, so an app can't run a process at random? especially when you have "over 100 apps"? Run the rom stock and see if it still happens, or even run the stock rom/kernel. if you don't want to try this then why are you asking for suggestions? christ

We'll of course it can. That is kinda my point. If I go one app at a time waiting for it to "run a process at random" I am talking literally MONTHS of testing. I would have to wait many hours, if not days after installing or uninstalling an app to be sure whether or not it made a difference, then move on the the next. This is simply not an option. I started this thread in hopes that a realistic and doable solution might exist that I was unaware of.

I am asking because there may be a solution that I am unaware of that doesn't require me to put my entire life on hold for months. It is possible that there is no such solution, but I asked in case there was one.
Sorry to have put you out so much.
You mentioned you recently installed exchange sync. Did turning off sync remedy this or have you not tried disabling all sync features?
One other thing to check is the background data usage of your apps. You'd find this under 'data usage' and make sure you enable the wifi tab so you can see data usage on wifi.

I just purchased my LG G pro E988 model less then a month ago. My battery life was fine until a week ago when moderate usage only lasted me about 10 hours, before that, with moderate usage with 70% percent screen brightness, with the wifi on for 10 hours a day, whats-apping the whole day, the battery lasted me for about 30 hours till the next day! i only use whatsapp regularly. i dont play games or use facebook often nor i watch any videos. I tried everything from deleting some apps that i downloaded, force stop some apps,.. its still not working.. Anyone?? Help needed!! Attached here is the screenshot of my battery life graph...

Hi, I have included the battery usage here. everything looks normal, but there are times when "home" and "system UI" is also shown as using 2% or 3% of battery. The battery gets heated up and it drains even when im not using the phone. My home screen wallpaper was the default wallpaper then i changed it to my choice. A while after that, it changed by itself to the default one. I suspect there's some virus or malware running in the background...I tried using different kinds of anti virus to detect if theres any virus or malware, but all the anti virus apps didnt find any virus and said my phone is clean. like i mentioned earlier, i have already hard reset the phone 3-4 times already...but its still the same, the battery gets heated up and the battery drains like hell when im not using it....any suggestions??

Hi dude
I had same problem!
try a factory reset your problem will be solved!
your device cant enter standby so use many charges!
I tested in a g pro e988 that drain every night 40percent of charge without use, so its solved!
backup your data and try factory reset!
try it i hope help you!
try wakelock detector. your phone does not go to sleep. with wakelock detector you can see what app is the REAL cuprit and close it.

Rapid Battery Drain - How can I improve?

My battery seems to be draining quite fast. I have removed a lot of bloatware, but I'm not getting the type of performance that others are getting.
It has lost 70% in 5 hours just doing a little browsing, watching a 20minute video and playing a game for half an hour. This was with Wifi on, and mobile data switched off, and background data switched off too.
I've had the device for a week now and I've charged it every day.
Any Ideas on how to improve it?

Could well be your brightness level? Are you using autobrightness or is it on a fixed level (I hope its not fixed at 100%!)
If you use autobrightness try using an app like LUX auto brightness instead.

My guess is a corrupted media file somewhere which is causing your media server to prevent the phone from going into deep sleep. When you go to settings , battery, is media the no 1 juice sucker?

I did try that, but it didn't work and the phone was a bit laggy. Why would android system take up 15% of whatever the battery uses? I'm getting so frustrated, I might do a factory reset.

Do you skype? Skype was draining the battery down in the Nexus 7 2013 even when you were not using it. I disabled it and the battery improved greatly.
Another option:
It sounds to me that there's an app that is draining the battery down a whole lot. I would try to isolate that app (by deleting each one you downloaded one at a time) until you have found it.

I don't have skype, but I like your idea - I've gotten rid of almost all the bloatware stuff. What I think I'll do now is charge it to max. DO a factory reset and not allow Google to start downloading all my apps again.
Funny thing though - when I charged it last night and unplugged it for 3 hours it only dropped a couple of percent. It started dying rapidly after I opened up a few other apps.
What I'll do now is charge do a factory reset, then switch it off, then charge to max before turning it on again. When I first got it, it turned on as soon as I plugged it in. did the same happen for everyone?
What you might want to do is download Greenify on the play store. This will tell you what apps are running in the background and then it will turn them off (hibernate).

Make sure that you leave the battery charging for about 10-15 minutes more after your cradle light turns green. Sometimes the battery isn't fully charged despite the cradle light turning green. 30 minutes on a game shouldn't be using that much battery consumption.
I usually get about 10-12 hours or more on each of my batteries ( video calling, chatting, games and my 4g is turned on 90% of the time

[Q] My Phone Radio is a battery hog.

Hello everyone.
I noticed something weird happening with my M8.
I changed my carrier last week, they gave me a new SIM Card.
I never had the issue when I was using the phone earlier. After I replaced the SIM Card with my new Card, I'm getting horrible battery drain. I attached a screenshot of my usage after a reboot.
That Radio was eating more battery than my screen. How's that possible ? My Note 3 barely consumes any battery on standby.
This one is sucking away all my power.
This is going crazy. I'm entering flight mode, as its losing 6-7 % overnight after a reboot.
I have everything disabled from sync, to google now, to "ok google". I'm on 0 brightness.
Can anyone suggest me something ? Any suggesstion/solutions are most welcome. Thanks in advance :good:

Honestly, that is not terrible standby. Tho a longer test would be more accurate.
Is location on? Have you disabled any HTC bloat?
Anyway, it's not that out of line really.
Best I normally get overnight is 0.4 percent drain per hour.... I'm rooted, debloated a lot of HTC stuff, location off and most other features.
I don't really see an issue.

Thanks for the reply. I switch everything off including sync, motion launch gestures, auto brightness and location has been completely disabled including google location reporting.
When I enter flight mode in the night with extreme power saver, I only lose like 2-3 % overnight, with everything disabled. However its not the same with the flight mode turned off. I lose like 5-6 %. I barely have any apps from the play store. I also found that using a different launcher saves the battery..
And when I use the phone for sometime, the screen dominates the radio consumption..
Finally, please have a look at the screenshot I've attached. I lost 10% battery with 30mins of screen being on. Is it normal ? Please tell me..
You must have rebooted. You used 6 percent with 30 minutes of screen time. Gsam stats reset when you reboot. So.... 6 percent drain with 30 minutes screen time is 8 hours plus screen with 100 percent gone. Lol
You are doing above average if you ask me.
Enjoy your device and stop worrying.

Strange Battery/CPU Usage

So my battery life has been average, nothing great but nothing terrible. Today I noticed the battery was draining quicker than usual and the phone was slightly laggier and warmer than usual. I looked at battery usage and "Android OS" was at 70%, when seemed abnormally high. I clicked on that and 'total CPU' was at 13 hours. Anyone have any suggestions? I uninstalled some recent apps and my brightness has been relatively low throughout the day..and I've restarted the phone a couple times. I also heard Android OS often can mean some Google services too.

That is insanaly high but i feel your utter pain bro..
My best advice is to try and restart the phone. Try and also remove the battery charge it fully and then just leave it for couple hours with the phone locked and display off.. Are you using NFC on location high, wifi and bluetooh all those battery eating goodies if so turn them off?
Try those suggestions and let me know how you get on. If you still having issues i tell you the next stage to the diagnosis (hopefully) which is what I i done lol..

Try those suggestions and let me know how you get on. If you still having issues i tell you the next stage to the diagnosis (hopefully) which is what I i done lol..

Well, right now my phone is charging. Android OS is down to 55% which is still way too high. I've already restarted the phone a couple times and just uninstalled Chrome Beta since that was my last app I installed and I figured it might have been doing something. I use WiFi a decent amount but I almost always have NFC and Bluetooth off (and Auto-Sync when I'm not charging). I have location on "battery saving mode".

Hmm, Right that seems to abnormal the next stage is to hop on to the Play Store. Download and install an app called 'Greenify' this all go through your system to see what is running that takes a lot of apps and directs you to stooping/disabling them...
On a side note is your brightness level set too high or is it on auto brightness try set it on 40% if you can...
I can't really say much more at this stage? Try those up and report back

Well, it seems to have sort of fixed itself. I woke up this morning and "Android OS" usage was down to about 15% and the CPU Total and Keep Awake time reset also. On a side note, I got great battery life today by turning off Google Now, background data, auto-sync, location, and keeping brightness at about 35-50% (which I usually do anyway).
That's really good glad it's sorted it self out keep an eye out on it and keep me posted coz I had more to suggest but hey ho
..
Its all good
