Turning in phone directly Samsung - Verizon Note 7 Questions & Answers

Long story short. Bought the note 7 on a 2 year contract. Verizon will not let me swap for another phone on a contract and are forcing me into a dpp. A rep suggested i return to Samsung directly. Called them (i recorded the call) and they said they will refund me $869 plus $25 for my case and tax. Has anyone else done This? Seems i will profit over 600 doing this. Thoughts?

From what I've seen other folks have gone through this. The one common theme is long waits. Very long waits. Plus some folks even finally got a check only to have a stop payment put on it lol.

Why would they put a stop payment on It? I know it takes long though....just went through the same deal with my washer

DO they have any way to tell what I paid for the phone without having a receipt? I already have them on audio telling me I will get back full retail price.

HEy guys, if I turn this phone directly to Samsung for a full refund, will verizon still bill me? Has anyone done this yet?

Call them back and explain the situation. Might have to prove you paid for it. Also try and find out what kind of fraudulent activity.

I'd try go to the cops and see if you can return the phone to the user it was stolen from, as well as see if they can go after the guy you bought it from to recoup your money.

see if they will exchange it for working phone in the T-Mobile store.
But I somehow don't buy your story. Blocking IMEI is good protection against thieves.
Depending on the situation it can take weeks for an imei to get blocked. It doesn't matter how you got it, matters of it was paid for it not through them ie first payment default or stolen. Tmo will not unlock it. You need to call the cops.

Bad luck? Really? You allegedly chose to purchase a top of the line phone for full price off of Craigslist instead of the T-Mo store. Why in the world would you do that? Something does not make sense.
Anyway it's nice to see that if my phone is stolen, I can block anyone trying to use it. A person in one of the threads who claimed to work for Tmo said they can't really block phones. Guess that poster was wrong.

Bummer dude, if T-Mobile said it was stolen then that's all there is. No way to change that, they block the IMEIs of phones that are reported lost, stolen, and phones on EIP (Equipment Installation Program) that have stopped paying. Best bet is to unlock to AT&T and sell it. I got mine in a trade for my note, but made sure to get the receipt even tho it was a previous customer of mine. Called T-mobile and immediately to have it registered in my name with IMEI to make sure there was no EIP in place. Next time run the IMEI, ask them to go into a T-Mobile store with you instead of meeting them at McDonald's.

What is not to believe? I bought mine off CL too... I didn't want to extend my contract, I have 1 more year with T-mobile then I'm switching to something else (but that's another story). If I bought the phone from T-mobile it would have cost me like $330 + tax - the $50MIR + get locked in to T-mobile for an extra 12 months of service... I bought the phone from someone - Yeah, I paid a little extra, but I have the option of LEAVING T-mobile in 12 months - AS I PLAN TOO, for a cheaper monthly service - so TO ME it was worth the extra up-front cost.
I'm not defending the OP, I'm defending the idea that its shady to buy a high end phone off craigslist or NOT from the dealer. Just because YOU think its ok to FINANCE the extra balance and cost of the phone instead of paying up front for it, that's YOUR CHOICE (or the OP choice) if not then that is also THEIR CHOICE.
I have bought several iPhone's - ALL FOR MUCH MORE THAN THE CONTRACT DISCOUNT PRICE because we have been on T-mobile which doesn't offer the iPhone so the only way to get the iPhone is to buy out right. That might make me stupid, but not shady. :good:
All cellphone carriers in the US must sell phones at their outright price. I just bought my S3 from VZW at $600 full price...Why didn't you just do that?

[Q] Switch carriers and insurance

Hey gang, long story short;
I lost my phone on Halloween, got my Asurion replacement but now I'm considering switching to AT&T to get back on my family plan with my wife.
I'm within my 30 days to cancel my contract. I don't have my original hardware but I do have a new Asurion one. I'm willing to eat the deductible to get out. Is this going to be a problem. any advice will be appreciated.
It probably depends on who you talk to but they might stick you with the etf because its not the original equipment you opened the line with

California is 30 days cancel and return.
I talked to tech support to reactivate my account to see if I really want to switch back or not and they said that it shouldn't be a problem to return this handset versus the one I got in store. It is the same phone and now it is 2 weeks newer than the one I got. I guess we'll see how it goes.
I love this phone, though and really hope I can convince my wife to join me on Tmo so I can keep it.

it should be fine, my store said that they'll charge a $50 restocking fee if I return the phone within 30 days (then again I bought my phone outright without a contract, so maybe no restocking fee for you).
I know I can return and pay a restock fee with "original" hardware but does my insurance replaced phone count as "original" hardware?
Thanks again for the input and sorry I didn't think to stick this in Q&A in the first place.

Not looking good according to the feedback here
So what would they expect me to do, pay for the phone outright even though it was lost and I paid for insurance? Then after I cancel, what do i do with the replacement. This isn't a very good system if this is the case.
I've returned 2 new phones in the past 6 months on Verizon. The first time was with a GS3, the rep just looked at the outside to make sure there was nothing obviously damaged, never turned it on or checked the IMEI. The second return was a MAXX HD, where the rep didn't even open the box, he just processed my return and I went on my way.
I would say go to the store, attempt to return it but don't mention that you got it replaced with insurance unless they ask.

Heres the thing. Your local t-mobile store is a franchise and owned by someone who sets the rules for that store, following guidelines from t-mobile. None of us are going to accurately be able to give you any insight into how the store will handle your transaction.
That being said, are you having buyers remorse? Is the t-mobile coverage bad? You mentioned your wifes family plan, t-mobile offers better plans vs at&t...cost wise. Whats the reason you are returning the phone?
For those who returned phones and are saying they dont check, they do and will. Your imei is in a lot of other places than just in jellybean. Again, its different by store. Just go in and be honest with the salesman and manager and let us know how they handled it.
What I missed in all of this is your reasoning behind getting rid of the phone.

I love the phone but the contract is just more than I want to spend and becuase I can get the same phone at ATT, I just figure I might want to wait until I can just buy the phone outright or wait until my ETF isn't $230. Tmo has been a little spotty during my trial, a lot of data switching to edge or worse. So all in all, I guess I was just hoping Tmovile would wow me enough that I'd go the extra mie to keep it but they did not. So now I'm hoping I'm not stuck over something dumb on my part by losing my original hardware.
Good advice, though.

Paying off my note 2?

So in nov I signed up with tmobile and got the note and a gs3 for my wife. I plan on selling the note and getting the s4 in march. I call tmobile to pay it off and they tell me I have to pay both phones off? This isn't what the agent told me when I signed up. He knew I swap phones about every 6 months. So my question is why can't I pay the note off separate? My wife never upgrades her phone plus it would lower my bill per month down. Tmobile is ending the subsidiaries anyways so I don't see what the issue is? The reason I went gsm is to be able to put any phone on the carrier as I like, such as international versions.
Talk to a different rep. Cause that rep is an asshole
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
Nope just spoke to customer relations and was told it cannot be done until tmobile ends the subsidiaries in a few months. No way in hell I'm paying $700+ for both phones. Basically the rep I signed up with flat out lied to me. If I would of known this I would of just bought my note full retail. Really ticked off right now.
$720 for both phones + $600 or so for the s4 is just too much for me.
3rd damn carrier that seems to lure their customers in with lies. Who would refuse me paying off a phone today? Basically I was told their systems cannot allow only one device to be payed off until may when they change their policies. This is really going to screw over a lot of people. I just don't get it.
Can anyone explain tmobiles logic in this? I'm baffled.
I've heard that since it was Even More Plus. The credit line is for everything combined, you can't separate them out. No idea if that's the truth, but they have been consistent in telling me that. If you were lied to, that really sucks and, IMO, they should try to do something for you. No idea what, but they could offer something.
Not much help, but at least confirming what they are telling you now anyway.

Yeah I have it in writing too from the original kiosk rep. I'm really ticked as I talk to this guy all the time when I'm at the mall. Tmobile is investigating what he told me and I've notified his manger. This really screws anyone who wants to get another phone anytime before may. I just don't understand the logic. Why would they care if I decide to pay the device off? Now I'm screwed if I wanted to get the s4 in a few weeks unless I add a 3rd line.
Now I can see why so many go prepaid. To avoid all of the carrier BS. This is worse then what I dealt with on both sprint and Verizon.
There has to be a loophole for this. Any ideas guys?
It does make sense that the credit extended is put into one loan. I'm sure it makes it easier on the accounting for them....... BUT...... If that guy told you something different, I would go straight to him and have him help you get this sorted out immediately. He's the one that gave you misinformation, I would make him spend time working to correct it also.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda premium
yeah, this really makes no sense to me why they would require this just because the phone accounts are linked? Just to be sure though, I'm going to make sure I buy my phone and my wife's phone separately.
Im told its becuase both phones were purchased together but that was becuase thats the day i switched from verizon to tmobile. The rep knew i switch devices often and told me it wouldnt be an issue. I got an email from the manager that they are investigating. If any of you bought the phones together id check on this. Im glad they are ending the pay per month on the phones BS. From now on ill pay full price.
This happened to me too. Opened a tmo business account and bought an S3 and a cheap text phone for the wife. Financed $500 between the two, and was told I could pay them off seperately. The note 2 comes out, so I go to pay the balance of the S3. I was told the same, you have to pay both off because they where contracted at ths same time. But I still had enough available credit to finance the note 2, swap the sim from the S3 in to the note 2, put the S3 on Craigslist, it sold the next day for the $400 balance I had on the note 2. Walked in to tmo the very next day and paid the note 2 off.
This is just an idea, I don't know for sure if it will work, but when I bought
my Note and my wife's phone, they told me that is no penalty if I pay
the phone(s) in advance OR if I pay more per month to shorten the pay
period of 20 months.
So, I guess you can go into the store and tell them you want to pay, let's say
$300 in the account for the phones. That will lower your montly payment, just
like you payed yours out and not "mess" with they're account number.
It's worth a try anyway....
Wait. So I have a $2000 credit on my account for devices. There's like $700 available. Your saying they won't let me pay a partial payment towards that?

the way tmobile does business is BS. never had this issue on sprint or verizon, i could swap phones when ever i wanted without penalties. knowing me the s4 will be announced and ill get impatient and just pay the $720 off and get the new phone lol. from now on ill always just buy my devices outright.
You could do what I did. Pay the deposit on the new phone and finance the rest, sell the old phone, then pay off the new phone.

Purchasing the One on a new contract, then cancel at day 15 and pay ETF?

Ok, I'm trying to weigh my options here. I have unlimited data and have no plan on ending that until they force me to. I have looked around and have found that a new HTC One still tends to go for around $500-550.
However, Verizon's ETF is $350, and now that the One can be had on contract for $50, it seems to me I could have the phone and only be out $400.
I actually ran this plan by a Best Buy employee as well to see if they could warn me of any pitfalls, and the guy said there would be no problem. But, I seem to find you guys know more than the guys at Best Buy or Verizon! So, here's what I had in mind...:
- Start a NEW LINE of service, not at all linked to my existing account, get whatever cheapest plan they have, and get the One for $50
- Wait out the 14 days "worry free" period, so that I am past the point where they would just want me to return the phone
- Cancel the service, pay the $350 ETF (plus a possible pro-rate for the half-month of service?)
- Profit!
Are there any catches? Any pitfalls? ANY way that I can screw myself over by doing this? Also, at what point can I switch the SIM card from my current phone over to the new phone? Right away or do I have to wait til I cancel the service? Do I need to do anything on the Verizon website as well? I have bought a phone outright for my wife and just switched the SIM and it worked fine.

Other than losing tons of money I don't see an issue. Why not just pay the monthly payments and keep unlimited though?

They will charge full price if phone if you don't return the phone. I use to work for Verizon in Columbia TN. This was the norm for that issue.

Ok so as far as you know, what is the cut off where they can no longer ask me to return the phone, but will not charge me the full retail price of the phone either? After conversing with the Best Buy guy, he said this cut off is 14 days, after which they will not allow me to return the phone, and would only charge me the ETF, not the full price of the phone. Is he full of it?

That's only if he does not pay the etf , if he pays the $350 they can't then charge for the phone .

NOT TRUE. I just opened up a new account to get the phone for $149. It was my only choice since I have a concession account and Verizon would not sell me the phone unless they could attach it to a consumer account and I wasn't about to pay $699 at Best Buy. I cancelled the next day over the phone. The rep told me I was within my window to return the phone. I told him that I wanted to keep it and he said that was absolutely fine. Got my final bill about 2 weeks later and was charged $350 ETF, 1 day service $3.50, and $11.48 in taxes. They tried to charge me tax on the Activation fee which they eventually reversed since the account was cancelled within the first 3 days. In the end I paid a total of $565. The cheapest retail is at a VZW corporate store at $599. I was satisified.

great info here, thank you. This is right in line with what I was expecting. Based on your experience, and the fact that the phone is now $50 on contract, I would say $465 is probably a good ballpark figure for what I should expect my total out of pocket cost to be for the phone.

If that is what they told you, that is complete bull****. That's a bs line that INDIRECT stores tell their customers. I know this because I was a store manager for one. The indirect retailers get paid when you buy a phone. When that phone/line is canceled a DAY before 6 months in term, they get their money taken back from them. Any new line or upgrade needs to be active for a complete 6 months before they are free and clear of returns and chargebacks. You tell them to shove it and call their bluff...Corporate Verizon should have NO problem doing this, I've seen it done. Hell....I've done it, but do it at your own risk because I don't work for corporate and never have, so idk what kind of guidelines they have about these types of things...
EDIT*** I thought you said the store TOLD you that, I misread. You WORKED for Verizon? Was it corporate or indirect? I've done this before, and have helped friends do it as well and there were no issues....

Sounds right. I picked mine up from the same store that refused to sell the phone to me. I placed the order online and chose in store pickup. Phone was ready within an hour..

Pay full retail or do the 12 monthly payments split on your bill.

Ok, to play devil's advocate here.
1. Don't do it at an indirect. Best buy may be ok because they're large, and probably wouldn't notice/care enough to come after you with a chargeback. At my indirect you sign a separate contract saying if you cancel within 6 months, we will bill you full retail on the phone or you must return it to us.
2. If you cancel within the first 14 days, YES, corporate can bill your account full retail on the phone. Most carriers have a "gaming" department that handles cases like these.
(Source: I used to work in a gaming dept. Charged a guy full retail on 10 blackberry bolds )
3. You'll have the cost at the POS, a $35 activation fee, half a month of service, and the ETF. Just be aware of all of these.
4. When you call in to cancel DO NOT say it was lost/stolen. Don't want your ESN getting flagged

Free Verizon note 7?

So I went onto Verizon this morning and saw I had a credit on my account. Thought this was weird. I went into my devices and saw they reversed my contract and I am now eligible for a free upgrade. Does this mean we don't need to turn our phones in? Seems like Verizon doesn't even want them.
Anyone else seeing this?

When I said free upgrade I mean I don't have to pay off my contract and eligible for a update with no penaltys. Sorry if I was misleading. Still says if I get a new phone it will a cost every month. My point is we don't have to turn our phone in and we don't have to pay for it anymore. So in essence, it's free.
I just noticed I had "Upgrade Available" on my Note 7 and came here to ask about it. I wonder if this means I can skip Costco altogether? If so that would be awesome. I am on chat now trying to see what that means.
Yep. Because they no longer selling the note 7 series. They are canceling the contracts and giving your money back for the payments and upgrade back

Yep. Wife upgrade got reversed. Mine didn't as I wasn't in the payment plan before hand. Mine might be a little tricky to be reversed as I was just month to month before hand. They assured me it will be reversed.. So tell me this. I exchange the note 7 get the s7e. So I should still have s free upgrade as all did was exchanged it. This is thru bb.

They told me on Chat that I could take advantage of upgrade at a Verizon Corporate store even though I bought it at Costco. He did say there was a $20 upgrade fee but that is worth it to me to avoid Costco.
There was no mention of being able to keep the Note 7 though, he did seem a little confused that there was an upgrade available.
He just told me that Verizon may advise me to return Note 7 to Costco but I can still get upgrade at Verizon Store. I may try this afternoon. If anyone else tries please post results.
EDIT: Looks like you can do the upgrade online and preorder the Pixel. I haven't completed the process yet, not sure if that is what I want.
My dad said something about seeing a credit for $700 or something like that in our account today. I'm also wondering if I could get them to refund what I paid for the note 7 which was like $200(edge program) and keep the note 7 but order something else.
Even if they let you keep them I am certain they will blacklist all of the IMEI numbers on their network and it will become a wifi only device.

and for throwing flames  I'm really thinking about the s7 edge since you can root it but errr its already like 7 months old, a bit tiny, and usb 2.0
This may work. You don't have to send the phone back in. I'm trying to get the $180 I spent on it refunded to me and then I'll keep the note 7 but order a different phone... Maybe the v20 or something..
Think I will stick my old Core Prime on to the back of the Note7 and call it a day.... Call it my "modular solution".
Yep. Free note 7. He said don't send it back... And I'll be refunded the $180 I spent in a week or so.. I'm eligible for a free upgrade now...
So I have two notes waiting to be returned for the recall. We can keep these definitely?
If someone goes to the store and upgrades and they don't ask for the phone at that time, let me know please. Thx.
Anyone know if we could use the upgrade at Best Buy to get a phone with one of their promotions? Like the free Samsung TV or a $200 gift card?
I don't believe Verizon can bump these off the network legally. I have a plan in good standing. I will not adversely affect the network by using it. Big Red just passed the buck to Samsung is all. I have no repayment contract with Sammy either.
This is really the best case scenario for those that wanted to chance keeping the Note7.

Just spoke to my local Verizon. I was told that I can upgrade, but they will send me a box to return my note 7 at some point. I was hoping to keep it and upgrade. Lol.

The Verizon guy I'm still talking to said I don't need to send the note 7 back and I'll be refunded the $180 I spent for it and I'm already eligible for another upgrade.

He also said I have no contract with Verizon anymore. Like my contract with the note 7 has been totally erased... No point in me returning it..
