I read on their Gerrit that they are looking to make a flashable zip for root instead of in-built. Does anyone know WHY they are doing this?

Won't it be to make sure people that really don't know what they are doing, don't install apps that could mess up their phone?

It already has safety precautions. You are warned before you turn it on. It is off by default and you must tap your build number 7 times to enable developer options. So there is no way you could accidentally enable developer options that could mess something up.
It's because they want make rom compatible with net pay and other things.... The official builds will have a private key and it will be necessary wipe data to install....

As @quintas84 states below it is for compatibility reasons.
https://review.lineageos.org/#/c/154019
I understand that after flashing the (soon to be provided) superuser zip once, the superuser will survive OTA updates.

Could you elaborate on that last part? Wipe data to install?
According then to avoid problems we will have to do factory reset to install the first offícial build....
Because they will sign zip with a private key to ensure integrity of the zip

My opinion is this...
Root is there but, that may be referring to when you activate the Developer Options and selecting the Root access to the App and/or the ADB.
I do believe that is what it may be referring to but, I could be wrong...

I'm currently build nightlies for my phone and in developer options no more root for apps available only disabled or ADB root....
So many of the aps I run will probably no longer work, titanium BU, Nova launcher, Buildprop editor, caldav/carddav, dSQLlitemanager Tasker probably others.
How do you disable the Google crap, for things like contacts . . .
All we have is a vague, we will provide a rooting mechanism sometime, somehow and maybe at some cost!!!
Bye-Bye the ability to configure your device your way.

Easy to resolve. Just flash another superuser until the official LOS one comes out!
Except, if you read the announcement, they are locking the boot loader. which means that it will not be possible to install or run if the system is modified. So disabling a system app, eg. google contact sync, stops your phone from booting unless there is something that allows such mods. You will need their superuser in order to get past the system modification check at boot, third part SU apps will not be installable. (very poor explanation I know).
Locking the bootloader makes the system more acceptable/marketable as it will allow people to use the increasingly marketed pay/banking/wallet apps which insist on good security. These services are estimated to be worth Billions of dollars in fees to the service providers. Just think of the money applepay adds to Apples bottom line.
(rumor) - Another thing that some of these pay app service providers may begin to insist on is registration with a find/wipe/track my phone service. Everybody want to know where you go, who you talk to . . . particularly your government.
I personally think that using your cell phone as a super tap and go credit/debit card is a very dumb idea.
Quick question: will wiping data/locking the bootloader/etcetera be necessary for home builds? Since I have absolutely no plans to use any online banking apps or similar and have a highly customised system (I rely quite heavily on having root, but according to the other thread keeping that is as easy as setting WITH_SU=true), I'm very unhappy with these changes. I don't mind building LineageOS myself, but I want some reassurance that I won't hose my system by not wiping my data.
I can unlock bootloader in oficial Rom .... I don't believe that we can't unlock with third part rom ... If this is true we have always the option to build unofficial....

Locking the bootloader? I doubt if any ROM can lock it. Can you provide a link to where you are seeing this information?
Would be nice if they offered builds with root still an option for those who are not into mobile banking... But like it makes no sense, Banks don't require rootless desktops and there is no good reason to require a rootless phone.

Take a look at post #4 in this thread, and the mention of "boot loaded locked" .
How they achieve that I don't know but I suspect that if you know what you are doing then anything is possible. Maybe to install the new LineageOS ROMs you have to start by flashing a completely stock rom which would include everything that the manufacturer provided.
As I said I don't know, and your guess at how this is achieved is as good as mine.

They are just listing off items that break apps - the ROM and bootloader are completely different things. Lineage OS,as any custom ROM depends on a custom recovery - very difficult to install if your bootloader is locked.

I'm sorry it's from lineageos telegram group I don't know if it's official but I read this before they push changes to gerrit and github... Because of that I assume that if it's not official it's someone with great information source....
I hope root will be still available optionally in some builds...

Dears,
Hope you are having a great time.
I just switched from using Nexus 5 to LG G3, I was really excited for this phone that I went and got the Korean version. The phone is SO LAGGY and slow, it takes (1.5 ~ 2 seconds) to launch YouTube which is pretty slow compared to the Nexus, I need some help and I have no expertise at ALL in developers stuff:
- Can I turn the LG G3 into a Stock android ? similar to how the S4 GPE ?
- What's the difference between "Rooting" and "Custom Rom" ?
- I read in the development section of the forum (can't post a comment there since I'm a new member) and there is one topic that has a light version of the LG G3 system, it seems the system is much much faster and improved, the question is, is it safe ? the owner of the topic included a zip file to download and a video in a language I don't understand, could someone help do what he did ?
Regards, :angel:
The korean versions comes with so much bloat, its unbelievable. Wait for International Version and then flash it, and it will be smooth. Its just that crap bloatware which make it slos

First go to apps manager, select the apps u want to disable. Then go to deinstall updates. After that go to the apps again, and there will be an disable button, but some apps u cant disable
2)go to settings-->Telefon Info -- Software Information- -- tap 5 times to build number now u are an developer.
Go to settings again ---- developer option-- enable it --- scroll down to the 3 animation who are set to 1x. All 3 animation turn to 0.5x
I hope i could help u , reply if it worked
Thanks a lot
it made the phone (a bit) better.
However, I would really be glad if someone can explain to me how to do the process step by step for the topic mentioned in the developers section titled (always stay update)
Careful when testing opening the YouTube app, as that app is notoriously slow opening compared to all other apps. It takes around 2 seconds on all phones, unless it's already open. (ie, in the RAM)

is it 4g or 3g help pls
Latest update: 2018-06-12 To view a changelog, you can visit https://review.lineageos.org/#/q/status:merged+branch:cm-14.1 for a rough idea up to the build date.
Hi all. I was able to compile this stock build of LOS 14.1 thanks to the efforts/hard works of Skrilax_CZ, bhb27, the folks who created RR, and those over at Lineage OS/CyanogenMod. It takes some minor features from RR (i.e. notification light, some tiny performance/battery tweaks, and the ability to install Motorola apps). It is otherwise stock LOS 14.1 and I use this daily. The other authors/devs and I assume no responsibility if you damage your device somehow.
Please don't feel pressured to update any more often than you wish .
Notes:
In order to make my calling work for Verizon, I had to go under Settings -> More -> Cellular networks -> Preferred network type, and select LTE/CDMA (not LTE/GSM/UMTS). I assume GSM users should be fine with the defaults.
Also if on Verizon, you should most likely select VZWINTERNET as your APN under Settings -> More -> Cellular networks -> Access Point Names (might not show up at first, but eventually loads)
My recommendations to install:
Install TWRP if you haven't already
3.1.1 - https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=39562 (forum:http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...recovery-twrp-2-8-7-0-touch-recovery-t3180308)
Perform a backup of your current system/ROM (if coming from another ROM).
Perform a factory reset/wipe (if coming from another ROM).
Install the .zip
Install the appropriate google apps.
http://opengapps.org/. I would think nano or micro is best, ARM, and 7.1
Wipe dalvik/art cache if you install another kernel. I highly recommend BHB27 kernel

Reboot and enjoy

My device is showing no root on this ROM and if I install super su it gains root but shows no sim card available. Fixed by enabling root permission in development settings.
The rom is almost 100%, the battery is well lasting me .... 1 screen time every 10% quietly, the only problem I really noticed was sending images on whatsapp that is not 100%, you send catch screen and photos taken by whatsapp ... now send images from the gallery do not know why, it just outside joys and once again thank you for your development. @calsurferpunk

I'm not sure what could be going on. I haven't flashed su and just use the stock CM root manager. Enabling root for apps only in developer options makes everything work for me when an app requests it. I did notice that I had to make sure that iSu was setting the policy as permissive (causes FC when set as enforcing).
If not bother you wanted to report a small simple mistake that can not encomodar only to warn even ... In Menu> Settings> Developer Options> animator duration scale, the second option is 0.5x and there is 5x....When I click on the Home screen and select background he simply FC, that's Gallery problem equal to whatsapp that has pictures not ...
The maintainer of CrDroid said I do not know how to use the Android and it really is a problem of rom and he would not listen to me and said she did not like my attitude. @calsurferpunk

So if I flash ROM and iSu says no root, then I just have to enable root in developer options without flashing SuperSU? I actually tried developer option after flashing SuperSU. Maybe that's why it didn't work. Let me know if I am right then I'll try the correct procedure.

That's all that I did and I haven't had any issue yet. I didn't have to change anything with iSu either (even if I did mess with it later just to see what it does).
Just as a quick update, next time I post an updated build I believe I know how to skip including iSu and kernel auditor by default. I'll make sure to include a way to download them and include them separately if this is successful. The goal of this is to keep it as close to stock CM 14.1 and still be functional so that anything you want to add can be done by your own free will .

Deny all and test your apps. If you need to enable an authorisation, return to privacy guard and long touch google services to choose detailed access.
@murigny64 i see, anyways after deny all i have no problems so it can be done safe, i add some pictures here, magisk all good, performance really good (35k at 1920x1080 and 40k at 1280*720, it is some less than other roms there but i really prefeer lineageOS), Pogo and etc, incredible rom
i suggest to disable LiveDisplay tho, it affects a lot the performance
EDIT: and btw, the battery life is amazing, but interactive seems a little bugged, but anyways it is good
EDIT2: changed to userspace and all ****ing good, idk what is the problem with interactive tho lol
@murigny64
Awesome work, and I LOVE the ROM. I do have a couple questions though. First, can I just disable the privacy guard altogether, or do I need to enable then deny?
Secondly, I saw a post where you were mentioning lock screen issues here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/idol-3/help/6045-try-to-fix-lockscreen-security-t3435892
I'm having the EXACT same issues. My phone was lollipop, and I've not reflashed any radios. It sounds from your post that you found a file to flash to correct the issue, but I don't know what to look for, or where to find it. Can you please link the files you flashed to fix it, or a link? If it helps, I have the 6045 from cricket.

Awesome work, and I LOVE the ROM. I do have a couple questions though. First, can I just disable the privacy guard altogether, or do I need to enable then deny?

1 - Battery drain is a Google Service issue, try to disable all privacy and only enable for google service
2 - It's a LL modem issue. You have to flash MM modem from your country

you mean give net via usb? just tested and it does not work, is like it tries to get enabled then disable it by myself
aside that, more testing and thanks to marionnete for some info, i got this score on antutu (3D at 1280*720)

i remember an app that let you to usb tether outside of the default option, but i can't remember
indeed is a good feature, it should be added as a bug since it is really used from some people

I agree. Really use it a lot, main reason why I've stuck with stock Marshmallow for so long

Hello. Tell there is a support of Russian in this ROM?
@murigny64
Stuck on boot when using xposed, it's known bug -_- ... Only workaround i know is to install launcher as user, not system app.

Xposed v87 work fine, you have to install arm64 variant.
So, I decided to apply to unlock my bootloader. I started following this guide.
I created a Mi account, but I was not greeted by a form to write the reason I wanted to unlock the bootloader.
A little baffled there, but I decided to proceed (maybe the form was in the app). I proceeded to the unlock page and voila! I had the link to download the Flash Tool. And so I did, I ran the miflash_unlock.exe and filled in my account and password.
Next I plugged in my phone in fastboot mode, as it was needed (I had not enable OEM Unlock in Developer Options nor had I associated my device with my account), and I was greeted with this image:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
What am I doing wrong? The Unlock button is active (meaning I can click it), but I don't want to brick my phone a couple of days after I bought it.
My device (just in case):
Android Version : 8.1.0 OPM1.171019.011
MIUI Version : MIUI Global 9.5 | Stable 9.5.13.0(OEIMIFA)
Baseband Version : 660_GEN_PACK-1.147555.0.150932.1
Kernel Version : 4.4.78-perf+
Android Security Patch Level : 2018-05-01
You're not doing anything wrong. Now you don't need to apply for permission. Instead go ahead and start Unlocking process. You will be promoted with a message saying that you need to wait for some amount of time (72, 360 or even 720 hours) depending on your model.
Bind your Mi account with your device first.
Go to settings > additional settings > developer options > here you'll find the option to bond your Mi account with your device.
Edit: don't update MIUI as you have arb-3

Thank you for your reply, it was clarifying! On the guide, it says I have to use a VPN to access the Chinese servers, is it really necessary? (just a question, it is not an issue!)
Hi,
My query is kind of different.
I want to hide unlocked bootloader from a few apps. ( Blackberry Work email app).
Any information on this will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I tried connecting to a bunch of Chinese server using VPN (as seen on some youtube videos) but I guess that method is now patched. I guess, it's only applicable on phones with Chinese ROMs within China.
You have to wait. While find some good ROMs and stuff. All the best.

Some apps requires Safetynet to be passed in order to use them, i.e. Banking apps. Unlocked bootloader, rooted phone can trigger this safetynet to fail. You can use magisk to hide the fact that your phone is unlocked.

Thanks for the revert,
however I have already tried Magisk hide and safetynet module but it's not working for me. I am using Redmi note 5 pro with Android 9.0 Pie based Pixel Experience Custom ROM. I am very happy with the ROM except that I am not able to use Blackberry Work app. Other banking apps are working fine.
Yesterday I decided to update to MIUI, I'll see what happens with ARB when I get to it, and I must say I am impressed! @preetam.id I believe it has to do with Blackberry Servers, not Magisk Hide feature, though I haven't used it for a couple of years now and don't what changes RIM has introduced.

Since you updated you can no longer go back to the stock ROM your device came with. You do realize this right? What you will have to do from here is stay on ARB4 and unlock your device from here.
Did you proceed with the unlocking for your device? I too just got my device yesterday and do not want to risk bricking. I don't see an option for bonding the account to the device in developer options.
Id like to stay with pixel instead of having to sell and then buy a new phone, just hassle, but iv seen proton is a very good ROM to run, my issues are with updates, how would you update the proton ROM? And is it easy enough to revert back to stock if needed?
Thanks.
If you want more privacy and security, as well as regular updates, GrapheneOS is an excellent option. Not sure the Proton ROM has OTA-like updates though

Graphene is a privacy based rom that lacks some crucial functionality if you need everything running. This is according to various posts on here and Reddit. Some people love it, and I'm sure some don't. I saw someone that liked it a lot but had to roll back because they couldn't get something or other working. But it depends on your needs.
As for Proton there is no OTA but updates are posted and they are a simple web install that takes about 4 or 5 minutes. Nothing is wiped if you are updating. After installing you can relock the bootloader if you want but that's another wipe as I'm sure you know. This is a very stock rom with a lot of tweaks in the background. FPR for one. It's much quicker although not perfect yet. Also the latest version is the December build with all security and most features enabled. One difference, of many, is that call screening is still available on this build. Call on hold is not. I flashed this rom and then installed the November radio over it since it does come with the crappy December radio. It's way better, I don't lose signal very much although I still do occasionally. Bottom line I like it and would have a hard time going back to stock. I'm not rooted and after the next update I might relock the bootloader, wipe the device and leave it at that.
Reverting to stock is the same as with any other custom rom. You can web install stock or manually fastboot it. Not a difficult process.

Hey I just tried there now and I unlocked the bootloader but it keeps saying about available space and if I'm using an incognito browser? Is there a specific browser I need to use to do this, I tried chrome and edge? Says I need 5gb available, my pc has like 1TB, any suggestions

I'll head over there now. I did see that a day or so ago.
edit: looks like the problem arises if you have multiple profiles on Chrome. I think the manual install is not that difficult though if you still run into problems. Flashall.bat -w to wipe the device then flashall.bat to install the rom. Don't do a thing until it's done. It's tempting because you get a fastboot menu allowing you to restart the device. Don't do it let the rom install direct you. I actually forgot if it's an auto reboot into the rom or finally the rom instructs you to reboot. But it should be pretty clear.

Are you using a VPN by chance? VPN are known to cause issues with wireless devices trying to connect (printers, Sonos (audio), debugging, et cetera), since your two favored toys can't "find" each other any more.
Can anyone currently using this ROM try out the translate function from the screen shot menu? I included a screen shot of how it normally presents with the results after selecting translate.
Also if you test it, there needs to be enough of a foreign language on the screen and also it might not trigger of it has your default language on the screen mixed in
