What the heck is this?

Newest security update on Verizon phones needed a new way to repair frp protection. Locked myself out on accident and have the Google information but this way was more fun.
I can add it to someone else's thread if that's a better place.

I saw that too and wasn't happy. I hate to have to root my phone and image it just to get rid of that application. It hasn't asked again since the first time. Hopefully it wont ask again!

Its not verizon i had it on my alltel touch pro and i think it just puts the city name when someone you don't know calls you. It never stopped doing that for me after the trial was up and it never popped up saying i need to pay. So it might just be an extra icon you have ti live with.
It is defiantly always running in the background!

Just because it isn't exclusive to Verizon, doesn't mean its not crappy bloatware.
+1 on getting rid of this when root is achieved.
I'm new to Android to so I apologize if this is totally out there. CityID is part of the ROM so it is protected. But I imagine that Cequint must be able to push out an update for CityID or their libraries from time to time.
What if we made our own version of CityID with the same manifest that did nothing and installed it using "Unknown sources"? Would Android see our newer version and use that instead?
Is this possible or do we need to wait for root access?
If you ForceClose it the trial returns to 15 days LOL.
There are some reverse lookup apps that show the name of the caller. Skydeck is well reviewed and I'm testing it.
When my trial period ended it asked if I wanted to keep my subscription and I hit no. It then allowed me to uninstall. Has anyone else had this happen for them?

Ok my free trial ran out last night, but this lame excuse of a program still runs for no reason, but to spy on my phone.
I was not able to remove the program.
This is a good reason to root this phone.
Ok so im new here and im new to the smartphone user crowd but I am pretty good with computers and think I may have found a way to remove City ID (and any other apps preloaded or not) from the Incredible. I was playing around last night and found an "Uninstall" button for City ID but I being a new user to Smartphones and honestly not yet willing to destroy my baby hehe was afraid to press it. Anyways for those (if any) of you out there are willing to try it and see what happens (im not held liable for anything if it goes wrong this is strictly your decision)..here is how you find the button:
1) Enter Astro File Manager (by default it takes you to your SD Card)
2)Hit the "UP" button, it will take you to your phone storage directory.
3)Choose the "System" folder.
4)Choose the "app" folder.
5)Scroll to "City ID". Click on it.
6)Choose "Open App Manager".
7)Voila..there is your button.
Please post if this works..alongside with any side effects etc..it would be greatly appreciated. Hope this helps someone.
Also posted this on XDA-Developers. Look there for replies too if it works. i sure hope so anyways. Search "City ID... how do you uninstall?".
EDIT: Also posted this on androidforums.com. Look there for replies too if it works. i sure hope so anyways. Search "City ID... how do you uninstall?".
No, it doesn't work. We have root now, so you can uninstall it. Someone posted directions somewhere. You just use the rm command from the terminal.
With this removed, do you still get city/state information (I imagine you would as Verizon advertises "Caller ID" as one of it's services). Was this just some moot/redundant app left in to try and make some money off of suckers?

Caller ID is name and phone number.
The translation from phone number to City/State is what CityID does. When removed, there is no display of City/State, but you still get Name and Phone number. As the translation of phone number to City/State for mobile phones is patented by the makers of CityID, Verizon can't provide that service without using the CityID application.

a alternative to "Frequently Called Remover"

I need a alternative to "Frequently Called Remover"
I'd love to get my mistress' number off there !
"Frequently Called Remover" from Android Market don't work on Epic Touch
I checked out the app Tiger. It monitors the Frequently Called list and prevents contacts from ever appearing on it without having to manually clear the list.
but I can't find the APK for this...

Is it permanent and auto... I need something like that, I rather not have frequent calls at all (TMI)
Idk if u can completely disable it but long pressing the contact u can remove em in 1 click i will check if they can be disabled and edit the post
Edit: i dont see any option to disable them entirely but deleteing is easy and it deletes the entire frequent call log for that contact and not just one call at a time so if u have (contact name) 15 calls to that contact it deletes all 15 calls and not just 1 call at a time

If you're going to be a douche and cheat on your woman and not have the balls to, you know - be a man and tell her what's up. Then at least put in some effort to cover your tracks instead of being lazy. Delete the frequently called list yourself, manually.
I'll take my infraction if that's what happens. This thread is stupid. Reported.

I think this is a valid topic, regardless of the OP's reasons for wanting to know. I like to show off my phone quite often to demonstrate some of the advantages of Android, and it would be nice not to have sensitive information like that so easily accessible to someone who's just playing around with my phone.

Do most people not know about the apps on the market that hide info like that? If you want to hide certain numbers when they call/text - get a black list app/privacy app or something like that. I like showing off what my phone can do also so I know what you mean. However, I don't allow complete strangers to handle my phone. I don't mind people seeing the name of someone I call often - I'm more concerned about the pictures they might see.
Guys, I use shady sms. It's got a built in call guard and a hidden contact list. Dev is cool too, he responds with help usually same day.
It blocks calls, sms, and hides them in the app. There's no app icon either. To open it, you go to phone, type your secret code, and hit send.

Damn, I was just joking.. Did I touch a spot, did your significant other cheat on you or etc... WOW!
I just want to app that monitors the Frequently Called list and prevents contacts from ever appearing on it without having to manually clear the list.
I know there other members looking for a similar solution to this problem....
Didn't mean to touch a nerve, hope you get your partner back, root their phone or something nice like that! Good luck!
Maybe edit the phone.apk or dialer.apk to get rid of the frequent list all together.
Or it may just be editing a value check for a call to save to the list. That way its always empty.
If you're going to be a jerk to your wife, then at least just get a separate phone. Or maybe you DO want to get caught. If you really cared you would not cheat, and if she's not what you want any more do the right thing and divorce her so she can do what she wants and maybe find someone who respects her without having to be concerned about someone who seems to not care about her(you).
That being said, I would check out Shady SMS, seems to help some ways. I figure the cost is worth it if you don't want to get caught.

Any new info on the subject
I think the app Super Private Conversation hides all communication from certain contacts and it is free on the market.
They changed the name to Private SMS & Call but it works wonders and is free. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superdroid.spc&hl=en
Alternatively, just use google voice for that purpose. All outgoing calls and text will be hidden within the google voice app.
Got to admit this was some good reading... If that man is capable of having more than one woman don't be mad at him... Kudos to you for at least not wanting to flaunt it and taking the time to try and do your pimping right.......hahahaha

I strongly disagree.
What if you don't want google converting your voicemails to text and analyzing your messages (along with keeping track of what you search for, who you call, who (and what) you email, where you go, and what you buy)???
I'm sorry, but an app that lets you simply push a button and play a message without having to listen to audio prompts and remember was that 7 or 9 to save... This Visual Voicemail is simple and efficient and a thousand times less stressful than trying to use Page Plus Cellular voicemail where they seem to randomly choose whether you have to listen to old messages before you can hear the new ones (so frustrating).
Until there is a law passed making me the sole owner of data about ME which lets ME decide how and when companies can use data about me, I don't want to provide more than nesc. to companies like google.

I spent five minutes looking through the search resuts after clicking your link and did NOT find the .apk for the most recent version before that update. Now I have to see, if there is some way I can undo the "thanks" I pressed for you when I stupidly clicked thanks before checking the link you posted since I assumed you were being helpful and linking to the THREAD. Ugh, can't undo thanks.
I don't know really know where to start to respond to this, so here it goes
1) If you do not want Google to convert your voicemails to text, disable that.
If you want to disable voicemail transcriptions, follow these steps:
1.Click the gear icon at the top-right of any Google Voice page and click Voice settings.
2.Deselect the 'Transcribe Voicemails' option in the Voicemail tab.
3.Click Save Changes.
2) I'm sorry, but an app that lets you simply push a button and play a message without having to listen to audio prompts and remember was that 7 or 9 to save...
Google voice does this very well.
3) Until there is a law passed making me the sole owner of data about ME which lets ME decide how and when companies can use data about me.
Why in the world would we need a law for this!?!?! Just don't give your information out on the internet, it IS yours, you can decide who gets it.

Please bring back the previous login modality

Previously, you could login easily by entering your name and password right away in the bar at the very top. That was very convenient.
However, obviously this was considered too easy and convenient by some, so this was changed to make it more complicated and longwinded. A few days ago, an extra "Login" button was added to the top bar. To login, you're now forced to click on this stupid login button, and only then you can enter your login details.
What's more, now this login button is broken. Clicking it doesn't do anything anymore, it only redirects you to the main page. To login and write this post, I had to click on the "New Thread" button in this "About" forum and then use the login link in the upcoming message. That finally worked.
Please restore the previous convenient login modality, where you can login by entering name and password right in the top bar. The new way, being forced to click the stupid Login button first, is a real hassle and is starting to grate on my nerves

Until the error gets fixed, you can switch to a different theme, let's say, XDA 2013 Beta, and use its functioning login form to login, and then switch back to XDA 2015.
I took a look at the other themes - all of them (2013, 2010 and Classic) still have the name and password fields at the very top, as it should be. It has only been stupidly removed in the 2015 themes to make logging in a pain in the a$$.
I'm currently using 2015 Dark, because the other themes are hideous white eyecancer.

Hey, I'm not arguing with you - the issue I brought up actually has nothing to do with what you just said up there ^. Anyway, many people do test the themes extensively, and if there's a small bug here or there, the best thing to do is respectfully report it to the higher-ups, and then be quiet about it so you don't become a nuisance. Our admins (@MikeChannon, @svetius, @bitpushr) work hard every day to keep XDA running smoothly for all of us, and being impatient is a very bad way to thank them for their hard and excellent work.

Please restore the previous convenient login modality, where you can login by entering name and password right in the top bar. The new way, being forced to click the stupid Login button first, is a real hassle and is starting to grate on my nerves

There may be things that need refined but there was a reason that the extra step was put in place. Unfortunately a significant number of users were confusing the Log In and G+ Sign In buttons. Several users were entering their username and password then clicking the G+ Sign In button instead of the Log In Arrow that's part of the password box. This then caused them to get auto generated questions about associating their account with Google and confusion followed. We were having to deal with several users per day getting confused or unable to sign in under the previous system.

So if the pop up log in bar is no longer appearing for you, you need to give as much info as possible for us to replicate the problem. What browser are you using, have you tried turning off add-ins, does it do it on other browsers etc.

That may well be, but making logging in more of a pain and more complicated for everyone just because a few users were mistaking the G+ button for the forum login button is definitely a BAD IDEA. You really should consider other options to solve this issue, like moving the G+ button to a different location, where it can't be mistaken for the forum login button, e.g. moving it all the way to the left, and/or more clearly labeling the forum Login button, e.g. change the forum login button from ">" to "Login" and the "G+ Sign In" button to just "G+". Then no one would mistake the G+ button for the forum login button anymore.

My browser is Firefox 35.0.1. I haven't changed anything about my browser (i.e. no update to a newer version or any configuration changes), and I haven't changed anything about any of my add-ins either. The login button stopped working out of the blue and is only redirecting me to the front page anymore.
Something more I just noticed: Clicking on "[View]" next to "The Following User Says Thank You to MikeChannon For This Useful Post: " doesn't display the user(s) anymore, but instead redirects me to the homepage, just like clicking the login button does.

Previously, you could login easily by entering your name and password right away in the bar at the very top. That was very convenient.
However, obviously this was considered too easy and convenient by some, so this was changed to make it more complicated and longwinded. What do you mean "login / search forms work exactly one time"? What device are you using? If PC, please state screen resolution, browser, and OS version.
@svetius
Seems as if I ever want to report a error again, i will try to be more specific.
I'm very happy that you already have fixed all of the reported bugs.
For the last days I have not been able to use with "XDA 2015" designs:
Log in button (The new form did just not show up, so i had no chance to enter my nickname/pw - sometimes it worked once after plenty of tries / clear browser cache)
Notifications button ( By clicking it, i was redirected to "www.xda-developers.com/# )
Search forms (Just did not work)
I tried Opera, Chrome, Chromium and Firefox // Win 7 + Win 8.1 // 1680x1050; 1600x900; 1440x900)
This indicates that there is a Javascript problem in your browser as it is not loading properly. Do you have any extensions like NoScript installed?
If you are on Chrome can you type Ctrl+Shift+J to open the Javascript console and let us know if there are any error messages in there?
Thank you.

Yes I use "scriptblock" but xda is whitelisted. Problem seems to be fixed serversided after some days. I did not change any of my settings and everything works again since today.
Just tried it, and the Login button works again, making the name and password fields appear, so I could successfully login.
Now if you would PLEASE put the name and password fields back in the top bar again, as before, so you don't have to press the Login button to make them appear, I would be most grateful.

I don't think we're going to revert. Most XDA members stay logged in, and for those that aren't members, putting the login form behind a click helps with mistaken clicks, and keeps clutter to a minimum. Thanks again for your feedback.

Need help urgent

So i downgraded my kdz from v10c to v10b and i am stuck at verify google account screen? i dont remember the account i was using before as i make a new one everytime i use play store....it asks me to enter my number then asks me to enter my name....after it shows me three accounts when i enter password it takes me back to Connect to wifi or cellular page? is there any way to bypass this?
How do you not know your Google username and password? Why do you use a new one for every phone? Surely you knew that you needed to re-enter it wen doing a downgrade...

Yes, destroying it is the only option now.
Please make a video of the destruction so we can ensure you do it right. It's important that you are thorough, otherwise the phone could come back to haunt you.

Every single android phone tells you to log in with your Google account after restoring.

Are you talking about a forced login to existing credentials, or asked to login to any Google account? Because all Android phones ask you to login to a Google account to use the phone, but you can skip it if desired.
Activation lock is new in 5.1 I believe.

It was a forced login to existing credentials.....not the usual "google login or signup" thing
Security measure ?
say this phone was stolen and the thief tried to do the same.
You're brave. get a phone when there is no service centre to rescue you . Start flashing stuff on day 2 with only knoweledge from samsung.

I am not against the security measures, BUT There should be some warning or something....i did not find anything like this in the flashing tutorials i have seen.....i just make a random google account everytime i setup my phone ...dont add no numbers or recovery data knowing i just need this account to download apps...i use superbackup to backup my sms and contacts...anyway this new security measure should be highlighted unless u want a $500 paperweight.....

Its a new feature in android 5.1 if you have a google account setup (which you most likely do if you are using playstore) and you have setup a screen lock Then after flashing anything it will ask you to "login" that google account you were using earlier. In my case i didn't remember the account i was using as i always make a new random account to download apps, i never had this issue before so i dont enter any recovery phone numbers to my google account, another thing when making google account it asks you to enter phone number and stuff if you have done that then you maybe able to unlock the phone by clicking "cant find username" button it will take you to another page where it will ask you to enter your recovery number...and then all the accounts linked to that number will get displayed you can try one by one....each of them unfortunately i had not done this i coudn't get the email account that was linked to this phone.

Serious question - why on earth do you sign up for a new Google account every time you set your phone up? That seems absolutely ridiculous to me (and to your contacts, who will in all likelihood see multiple copies of your details in their contact lists for every Google account you've signed up for!
Extremely suspicious.....

You posted both the serial number and the imei number of the phone. See attached screen shot. So I assume the phone actually isn't stolen, otherwise it would be quite stupid to post these pictures.
I personally don't get what people are really trying to be so secure against... Unless you're an international criminal or terrorist running from powerful governments , seriously what does anyone truly have to worry about? What are the chances some hacker is gonna invest his time and effort into any close to normal one of us and chances are there's people out there with way more money that's accessible online that you or me lol most people are way too paranoid about their location of all things ..like so what ? How is anyone gonna profit or benefit from knowing where we are ...I have nothing to hide anyone wants to waste their time knowing where I am they can come on down to southeast Georgia USA in the heart of har. Mkd core imbread cousin f..kin redneck country where I was unfortunately born and raised and see what all the security measures are really for and its just as lame as it sounds lmao and I personally would never put anything I didn't want anyone to see , hell the world to see , anywhere near an internet connection.. I can't believe people put their entire lives earnings in online banks, I won't a regular bank...my point is it doesn't make sense to waste security measures on nothing important ...this is just my opinion ya know ...just off like 2+2 don't equal 5 lol
