Please bring back the previous login modality - About xda-developers.com

Previously, you could login easily by entering your name and password right away in the bar at the very top. That was very convenient.
However, obviously this was considered too easy and convenient by some, so this was changed to make it more complicated and longwinded. A few days ago, an extra "Login" button was added to the top bar. To login, you're now forced to click on this stupid login button, and only then you can enter your login details.
What's more, now this login button is broken. Clicking it doesn't do anything anymore, it only redirects you to the main page. To login and write this post, I had to click on the "New Thread" button in this "About" forum and then use the login link in the upcoming message. That finally worked.
Please restore the previous convenient login modality, where you can login by entering name and password right in the top bar. The new way, being forced to click the stupid Login button first, is a real hassle and is starting to grate on my nerves

Until the error gets fixed, you can switch to a different theme, let's say, XDA 2013 Beta, and use its functioning login form to login, and then switch back to XDA 2015.

I took a look at the other themes - all of them (2013, 2010 and Classic) still have the name and password fields at the very top, as it should be. It has only been stupidly removed in the 2015 themes to make logging in a pain in the a$$.
I'm currently using 2015 Dark, because the other themes are hideous white eyecancer.

Whatever Its really poor that a forum with over 6 million registered users is not able to fix such elementary bugs in a couple of days. Someone should test the themes before they go online.

Hey, I'm not arguing with you - the issue I brought up actually has nothing to do with what you just said up there ^. Anyway, many people do test the themes extensively, and if there's a small bug here or there, the best thing to do is respectfully report it to the higher-ups, and then be quiet about it so you don't become a nuisance. Our admins (@MikeChannon, @svetius, @bitpushr) work hard every day to keep XDA running smoothly for all of us, and being impatient is a very bad way to thank them for their hard and excellent work.

This forum is quite excellent, thats a point I totally agree with you. But making the login and search feature not work anymore is quite heavy and annoying. No matter how awesome the forum itself is.

There may be things that need refined but there was a reason that the extra step was put in place. Unfortunately a significant number of users were confusing the Log In and G+ Sign In buttons. Several users were entering their username and password then clicking the G+ Sign In button instead of the Log In Arrow that's part of the password box. This then caused them to get auto generated questions about associating their account with Google and confusion followed. We were having to deal with several users per day getting confused or unable to sign in under the previous system.

So if the pop up log in bar is no longer appearing for you, you need to give as much info as possible for us to replicate the problem. What browser are you using, have you tried turning off add-ins, does it do it on other browsers etc.

That may well be, but making logging in more of a pain and more complicated for everyone just because a few users were mistaking the G+ button for the forum login button is definitely a BAD IDEA. You really should consider other options to solve this issue, like moving the G+ button to a different location, where it can't be mistaken for the forum login button, e.g. moving it all the way to the left, and/or more clearly labeling the forum Login button, e.g. change the forum login button from ">" to "Login" and the "G+ Sign In" button to just "G+". Then no one would mistake the G+ button for the forum login button anymore.

My browser is Firefox 35.0.1. I haven't changed anything about my browser (i.e. no update to a newer version or any configuration changes), and I haven't changed anything about any of my add-ins either. The login button stopped working out of the blue and is only redirecting me to the front page anymore.
Something more I just noticed: Clicking on "[View]" next to "The Following User Says Thank You to MikeChannon For This Useful Post: " doesn't display the user(s) anymore, but instead redirects me to the homepage, just like clicking the login button does.

What do you mean "login / search forms work exactly one time"? What device are you using? If PC, please state screen resolution, browser, and OS version.

@svetius
Seems as if I ever want to report a error again, i will try to be more specific.
I'm very happy that you already have fixed all of the reported bugs.
For the last days I have not been able to use with "XDA 2015" designs:
Log in button (The new form did just not show up, so i had no chance to enter my nickname/pw - sometimes it worked once after plenty of tries / clear browser cache)
Notifications button ( By clicking it, i was redirected to "www.xda-developers.com/# )
Search forms (Just did not work)
I tried Opera, Chrome, Chromium and Firefox // Win 7 + Win 8.1 // 1680x1050; 1600x900; 1440x900)

This indicates that there is a Javascript problem in your browser as it is not loading properly. Do you have any extensions like NoScript installed?
If you are on Chrome can you type Ctrl+Shift+J to open the Javascript console and let us know if there are any error messages in there?
Thank you.

Yes I use "scriptblock" but xda is whitelisted. Problem seems to be fixed serversided after some days. I did not change any of my settings and everything works again since today.

Just tried it, and the Login button works again, making the name and password fields appear, so I could successfully login.
Now if you would PLEASE put the name and password fields back in the top bar again, as before, so you don't have to press the Login button to make them appear, I would be most grateful.

I don't think we're going to revert. Most XDA members stay logged in, and for those that aren't members, putting the login form behind a click helps with mistaken clicks, and keeps clutter to a minimum. Thanks again for your feedback.

i must be very unlucky but everytime i use the search i got this message:
Sorry, search is temporarily unavailable. Please try again in 10 minutes.
and i gonna sound stupid but where is the seach button within the thread.
because looking an information in a 100+ page thread is not so easy without search
if i cant find it then i guesss a lot of people and newbies won't, then you cant expect people to search before they posts
I dont see any announcements regarding the search feature being disabled, but it'd be my best guess that either there is some sort of maintenance going on, they may have disabled the search temporarily (it is a huge bandwidth killer), or least likely....a software error.
Either way, I am sure someone is aware......I'd just be patient.
(fwiw, I need the search feature too....but I can live with what I need the answer for....and I don't want to use any other forum but this one)
IIRC it's when the servers are getting overloaded, the search automatically gets disabled. This ensures the rest of the site doesn't go down.
If not, it might just be maintenance...
The google search will still be operational unless google goes down

I've not noticed the "search this thread" button being unavailable before. Maybe you've had a different experience to me. On both the new and classic styles there's a "search this thread" button at the top of the first post on the page you're viewing. If it's not there for you then I bow out and leave it to someone who knows why to give you a better answer.

Infinite ads - no back button

I have written this on the main interface page and received no answers.
On some pages I get to a point where no matter how many times I click on the back button, the page goes nowhere. When I long click on the back button it shows a list and there are pages of the same link that has the word ads in it. If I click on the bottom item in the list and long click on the back button again, the same list comes up. If I do this several times, I finally get to where I was to navigate to the page.
While I haven't actually taken the time to count, I am sure that there are over 40-50 page listings that come up from one page with only a few messages.
I am using IE9 and I want to know what I can do to stop this overtly evil behavior. I fully understand the need for ads but I don't see any good reasoning to hijack my page. If I click on a link in the page, I can then go back to normal. It doesn't happen on every page, just sometimes.
Since my bookmark to this site is on IE9 and not Chrome or Firefox and since I navigate to this site only on my desktop, I don't get the problem elsewhere. This behavior is only on this site. Some sites open pop under windows (also evil) and pop up windows (annoying) but this one really gets me angry.
Again, how does one get this bad beharior to stop???!!!
Please help:crying:
I just went back to the offending page and several times it only had two instances of the ads link. I then went to Chrome and it didn't happen at all. I know there is evil here because it is related to advertising. Is someone posting hiding something here? Is the site doing this to me? Is it an attack on IE because of the anti microsoft sentiment?
Why Why Why???
I'm done. I'm hoping for some answers now.
Sorry about the rant. I have to use IE because it is what my non technical wife is used to and the always there bookmarks on the left are important. We also have land line becasue she won't give it up.
Ummm. Don't think your in the right place dude. You'd be better off searchin ms support or at least using a windows forum. This is Android!
But to try to help, sounds like a browser hijacker, or malware. You need to run scans with malwarebytes, spybot, hijack this, anti-virus....you get the idea.
Sorry I can't help you more than that. Good luck

If you haven't already, download and run malwarebytes. Its one of the best and can find tons of stuff that regular AV can't.
As for bookmarks, if it comes to it there are utilities you can use to back them up. Then uninstall/reinstall IE.
You can also import bookmarks from/to chrome.

While looking for another solution (to another problem) I found your post. The same thing happened to me today on this site.
The problem is not your PC, nor your browser and is not a malware issue either. In fact, it's from a script that is specifically designed to disable the browsers' back button. You see, the back button does not generate any revenue towards pay-per-click and/or similar schemes. Click-throughs, however, will...
Chances are that one of the page ads loaded the script (usually java) and set a cookie as well (to prevent one from replicating the problem).
Closing the browser window is about the only way to get around it. Holding the pull-down for the back-button only shows numerous versions of the same page.
Other browsers have plugins that can prevent the script from running in the first place and/or block the ads entirely.
If it keeps happening then you should contact one of the Forum Mods.
Hope this helps.

At OP, if you are still having problems with the site, got to the main XDA page and flag an admin to check out your issues. Plus you could search there and if no results pop up or no one else is having the issue, there error could be between the chair and keyboard. If you want this to remain open, it is your choice but you will have better luck in the main XDA section, rather than the SGS3 section.
Shoot me a PM if you want it closed. If no PM by morning my time, then it is gone.

Account Retrieval Bug - Captcha

Hi there,
Just letting you guys know about some odd behavior I encountered.
I couldn't remember if I had an account here or not, so I figured I'd try a password (username) retrieval, and no matter how many times I tried, I kept getting "The string you entered for the image verification did not match what was displayed."
I'm always careful to refresh Captchas until I'm absolutely certain I know what it says, and I tried 5+ times - I can't be that bad at entering them!
I know now that I didn't have an account on the site, and this was presumably why it was giving an error - albeit the wrong description for the error.
Thanks,
Moley

Haha, it would seem so.
A "There is no account for this email address on this site" error may have been more appropriate thought!
I'm sure a site full of developers can appreciate the need for accurate error codes/reporting

Indeed. If there's one thing I really hate, it's when I execute a command or, well, do something, and when it has an error, it either doesn't return a message at all, or it returns an obscure message that doesn't help anyone fix the problem. Major pet peeve of mine.
Is there anything more I can do to bring this to the attention of the webmasters (mods?)?
Other than through the contact link down the bottom of the page (I feel that wouldn't be the most efficient).
Cheers

If I'm not mistaken, the only options are:
1. Use the inefficient contact link method
2. PM the moderator to which you'd like to bring the problem
3. Post it on XDA (which, of course, you've already done)
I'm not aware of any other methods.

recaptcha position

Hello, I'm new there, but I have one thing I haven't got used to. It's the recaptcha position. If I start a blank thread, post or reply, the recaptcha shows the first above the edit boxes. I tick it and rewrite text to complete it. Then I start to write, what I wanted. After the input for the title is filled, there are shown some recommendations to similar threads. After filling the text of my post, I'll click on submit button (under icons if I write thread). But if I finally manage to write, what I needed (and I usually write slower, because I don't speak english very well) and click on Submit button, the recaptcha warns me, that it expired and I need to tick it and complete it again rolling up and afterwards down through the all content of the site. Couldn't it be made easier. You could e.g. reposition recaptcha task right before the submit button or so... It would be great.

Could take a look at it?
Sent from my DROID Turbo using XDA Labs
No to the first question.
I'm using Edge for my browser. I've reset my modem and router twice (sb6121 modem, Asus rt-n66r)
Just got this error:
429 Rate Limited
Whoa there, hold your horses! We've detected a lot of requests coming from your IP and have rate limited you. Please check your configuration and try again.
Only me is using the computer right now. Nobody else is at home.
I have the same problem whilst trying to use the search functionality in a thread.
This is rather annoying as i don't want to look in over 100 pages one-by-one.

This can be caused by extensions or settings requesting pages in the background. This feature is called "prefetching" and requests links before you actually click on them. It's fast for user experience but hammers the server. You shouldn't be hitting the 429 rate limit unless there are a lot of requests coming to the server.
Me too, I only go to the forum a few times a day and get this error every time?
It's getting that way, it's not worth the effort.
Doesn't seem to be any fix for the issue, or, am I missing some thing?

Disable prefetching in your browser, this "feature" causes the browser to load a bunch of pages in the background. On a busy site like XDA we rate limit pages to prevent abuse, imagine if everyone loading a page actually loads 20 pages in the background.
Tried the 3 main browsers on my personal Windows 10 laptop, connected to my S9 hotspot. The problem happens on all 3 browsers when I try to download 1 file (CyanogenMod for Note 4 https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=19462)
Tried my work laptop on my work's network connection, same error in both FFox & IE11 on Windows Server 2012.
Tried on 2 different T-Mobiles phones in the Chrome broswer - same error.
Seems like the "429 rate limit" is crap on XDA. I haven't been on this website in years - kinda sad to see such a silly configuration problem causing so much grief for users.
Anyone know a different source for the 2nd newest unofficial CM for the Verizon Note 4 (the latest release fails to boot - stuck on CM logo)? I really really want/need it. Thanks!

Quick update: Nevermind, I just kept trying and it eventually worked (on my work-network + FireFox).
Every time I log on here after a while not being on here I get the rate-limited screen.
I have the same issue as well.
same issue here too
Just registered and can't even change profile settings because of this.
The only reason I registered was to keep the dark theme applied across tabs. That's it.
Getting this too.

I'm the only user on my IP. Problem is squarely on your end XDA.
Getting this randomly since the XDA "Theme" issues Monday March 31st...? I'm on the latest Chrome browser.

Me too... but only if I click one link too fast after the former one. My personal solution: I hold my horses! And then it doesn't happen any longer. Just about 3 - 5 seconds between the clicks are sufficient.

That's what I tried to do as well, but still kept getting the error. What started working now is if I open any of the forums and get the error, I just click on the reload button in the browser, than the page loads up. Everything seems to work though in the XDA forum app.
