So I have stock 2.2... rooted.... and I removed verizon crapware.
I just got the notification that an update is ready for me? this is the one that contains the verizon app store... as well as I think a new kernel.
Is it safe to install? would it even install? If I did would I lose root?
You would loose root if it takes.
The update may fail depending on if it checks for stock apps. Not sure if this update will.

Well...since the root process also gives s-off... I'm a little confused about all of this. Shouldn't that let me get root back? and wouldn't the update fail since I don't have stock recovery?
Do I say install? Aaaaaigh
If you let it try to restart and install the update ClockworkMod will deny it, and the notification will go away for a while (either one day or one week, I can't remember).
I got the notification an hour or so ago on myn's warm twopointtwo.

Some one might be better able to explain root vs. S-OFF than I but ill give it a try.
Root is for your operating system. It's like in winblows having administrator privileges so you can execute high level commands, modify system settings, etc...
S-OFF allows for your phones bootloader (like a PCs BIOS) to flash unsigned files. So, if we do get an update that removes root, we can flash a custom recovery program, to then install a ROM that does have or can be rooted.
Do a backup. I don't think the update will install or stop bugging you to do it. You should be able to modify your build prop to stop the messages.

So should I hold off on applying it, or assume I can just use Unrevoked to re-root after the OTA?

Why can't you look in the VCast store otherwise? If your phone is not the newest version then it won't have access to it?
Yeah... I would actually love to be able to install this... Especially since if I read correctly I would keep root.
As for the bloat, I can just remove it like the other bloat...

Mostly because I'd like to be able to check my vCast stats and comments from my phone, plus I think it's a good idea to be a user of the service if I'm selling apps on it.

We have several Dinc's here at work. The only phones to receive this update so far are the slcd incredibles. Amoled doesn't seem to be getting it. And there appears to be a side effect after the update is applied, if you had a bluetooth device connected you need to unpair and re-pair the device. People are noticing that the scrolling seems much faster after the update so I'm going out on a limb and assuming the update had something to do with updating the slcd drivers.
Also had an issue on one where the phone wouldn't boot up after the reboot until the battery was pulled out and put back in.

Mine is one of the originals (had it since day one) and I received the OTA... it just didn't take cause I'm rooted (guessing it has something to do with replacing the recovery with clockwork.
I'd love to know how to apply it in case it was more than just crapware (which I will uninstall since i'm rooted)

I'd like those bug fixes, but it's not worth losing root :/
So it looks like someone will need to grab the OTA update... and repackage it as an update.zip for clockwork
First of all i'm sorry to post more questions about rooting but it seems like no one cares about some problems... i searched so many times on xda and even google advanced search
I have the r800 xperia play...I've been using it for couple of months so i have a lot of apps n stuff. I am running the newest 4.0.A update and i love it but i read i cant flash to 2.3.2,root it with gingerbread then update to 4.0.A cuz its not OTA
so i thought i could do it the unlocking bootloader way but i have a lot of questions so lets start...
-Is there a way to be rooted in 4.0.A,and if there is...do i need a rom or what?
-If I root my phone will i loose all my app data(this is the most important part,i dont want to loose all my perfect games in cut the rope and games like modern combat which have incredibly hard levels)
-When my phone is rooted...will i be able to update it to 2.3.4 and the Ice Cream Sandwich next year,or i would have to load custom roms
-I also noticed that when i uninstall a free app from my phone it disappears from the My Apps tab in The Market so what am i supposed to do if the root wipes all my apps? Write all 60+ of them on a peace of paper?

First off i dont have an unlocked bootloader but i will answer what i can.
1. Someone with an unlocked bootloader will have answer this one but im sure you can.
2. If you unlock your bootloader your phone will be wiped. The only way you would have kept root and all your apps is if your are on 2.3.3 (with a locked bootloader) and are waiting for the xloud update over ota (like i am) But since you have already updated to 4.0.A if you reflashed to 2.3.2 > rooted > ota to 2.3.3 (and wait like me) you will still loose all your apps (since you had to reflash). Best you can hope for is backing up your apps data with titanium backup pro or my backup pro. Then once you are rooted on an unlocked bootloader (or if you have reflashed 2.3.2 > rooted > ota to 2.3.3 with root) you can reinstall the app data.
3. If you unlock the bootloader you can still get updates but you cannot get them from OTA, PC Companion or SEUS (it will brick your phone) you will have to go the development section and a user who has got 2.3.4 (when its out) will post an update package you can use.
4. I have used App List Backup from the market. It saves all your market apps in a list so you can just redownload them and you still get updates e.t.c. Only works with market apps no 3rd party ones. Or even MyAppsList just to create a txt of app names.

Thats what I feared...but doesnt titanium backup require root? Maybe i misread it somewhere and its stuck in my head
LOL yeah sorry my bad. Indeed it does. I think mybackup pro works without root but im not sure if it is 100% reliable. Either way you are gonna have to either loose all your data or gamble saving your app data with my backup pro since rooting on anything after 2.3.2 (with a locked bootloader) does not work.
MyBackup requires root to backup app data I mean hasn't anyone figured out how to save their data...seems to me nobody cares about it
Anyways,provided that somehow i magically manage to save it i would still have to wait for OTA. Any ideas where i can check daily when the update will be available?

Sorry bout that bud. Probably got your hopes up for nothing I think the arc got their ota update a few weeks after it appeared on SEUS/Pc Companion but who knows its totally up to SE. I dont even think all the countries have got the ota yet for the arc.
You can root without unlocking the bootloader as far as I remember. I believe I used SuperOneClick for it.

I believe that basic Android - unthemed, untouched - does regular backups to Google. Basically, it will backup your app data and your list of apps. When you wipe a phone and log back in, it'll restore the apps and data automatically.
I noticed this myself when I was on my Samsung Galaxy S Captivate. The first time I installed Cyanogenmod 7 on it, it restored a ton of apps on my phone. The touchwiz framework for the Captivate doesn't allow it by default, I believe.
I have not seen this work on the Xperia Play.
Well...if it works on other phones it can work on any other phone running it...right?
I guess someone would have to extract the feature and somehow make an apk
I don't think it's quite that simple. It's most likely completely removed from the framework, so there's no readding an APK.

because the app has the permission to do it, an unrooted user, does not have access to /data/data
Ok this is the last thing i had in mind...SE had some sort of backup app for the arc and it was ported to other xperia phones but whenever i would try to download it from their official page it would show me random html all over the page and now i lost the link..
But when i think about it... SE couldn't do it without root so...it probably just saves something else. Anyway can i root it with unlocked bootloader without loosing data?

Your phone gets wiped when you unlock your bootloader but you can downgrade to a rootable version of android using flashtool without loosing data you can then make a backup, unlock bootloader, flash latest firmware, restore backup

Well my original plan was to downgrade do 2.3.2,Gingerbreak and wait for 4.0.A to hit OTA but Mozza2k11 said it would wipe my data

I'm new here, and I'm relatively new to the whole rooting and modding scene, although I'm pretty confident in using Odin and various software involved in this, so, hopefully this won't be too complicated.
I have a question about my Note 10.1 2014. I have the WiFi model (P6000), which was bought in China since I was a student there for a year. Now I'm back in England. I flashed my ROM to a UK version so I could use Google Play services and Facebook integration, along with several other features and services which are blocked in China for various reasons. Now, my problem is, I have no real reason to have a rooted device other than for this. I also know I didn't need to root my device to flash the ROM, but I had some problems with my keyboard in China, but I have since solved them and have no use for the root. I want to take advantage of OTA updates since apparently my device should have one, but I can't because I'm rooted. Is it at all possible to unroot and lock the bootloader so I can update, without losing the ROM flash that is making my device run the UK firmware? If so, how would I go about doing this on my device? If it's not possible, is there are method in which I can update my firmware?
Sorry if I'm a little clueless about this stuff, and thanks in advance.

What rom version you're running right now? Do you have a full UK factory firmware 4.4 available?

OK, you have 4.3 and waiting for 4.4 OTA update. If you open your SuperSU app, then go to settings, scroll down to "Full unroot", select that and it should unroot. After done reboot your device and verify that the SuperSU is no longer in your app draw. I don't know if you modify anything else on your device like build.props or installed any rooted apps, if you do you need to remove them ALL, unfreeze any system apps using Titanium backup and revert build.props back to factory original, BEFORE YOU UNROOT. Once everything done you should be ok to take the OTA update. The OTA update will not erase your data so you should be fine there.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I tried to option within SuperSU, but it seems to have been uninstalling for about 15 minutes with no result. I realised that I froze the stock Samsung keyboard since it overtakes the Google Chinese Pinyin Input when using a keyboard, and I work primarily in Chinese. Could this be the reason why the uninstall seems to have failed or got stuck? Not sure what to do now, oops.

Did you read my instructions?? you must un-freeze all the system apps first before unroot otherwise the OTA may failed. Let it sits for another 10 min then reboot your phone and check to see root has been removed.

Yeah, I did read the instructions. It was just a moment of stupidity on my behalf, completely forgot I'd frozen the stock keyboard. I'll leave a little longer and then reboot.

Well, it seems to have gone a little weird. I have no root access anymore but SuperSU is still installed and my device status is still custom, so the OTA update won't run. I'm guessing I ought to reroot and properly clear out/unfreeze stuff, right? Sorry for being a pain haha...

You need to remove the SuperSu app by go to playstore search for Supersu then you should see the uninstall option. The OTA failed probably because it detected that you have modified the system. You need to think what you did to your system and revert back before try again. I would just use towelroot app and reroot then unfreeze any frozen apps, then uninstall then try again. If you can't remembered what you did and the OTA stills failing, then the next step is use Odin and flash factory firmware either 4.3 or 4.4. Remember to read my instructions before and ask if in doubt before taken any action. After you re-root, make sure you use Titanium to run a full backup of all your userapps. if you don't want to be bother, then just use Odin to flash either 4.3 or 4.4 but you need to re setup and re-download all your apps.
So I got my phone today and rooted it directly. When I was browsing through the apps, I saw it has an update but it didn't let me install it because the phone was rooted. So, I had to go back to stock rom with a kdz file wiping everything, which seems to be the latest rom right now. I'm thinking about if i should root or not right now. Will I have to wipe everything again when the phone gets another update? Are you all in this situation or do i not know something correctly?
Some how I was able to install latest ota with root and also nothing was wiped.
Im not 100% sure but I think you can unroot with SuperSU then ota should go through but I may be wrong.
If you want to use apps like g3 tweaksbox, titanium backup etc, you will need root! I think you can do so much more when your Phone is rooted, so i would root it immediately!

I also took an OTA for my F460S while rooted and it worked. My phone also is fine (it didn't die, crash or kill itself). When I get my next OTA I'll upload a video to show that it does work for some odd reason (only for a few people that I have seen). The benefits of rooting outweigh the drawbacks. If you root your phone, than you should be comfortable flashing a KDZ to restore it.
OTA updates often modify existing pre-installed apps, otherwise known as bloatware, so they check to be sure those targets are present and unmodified. If you have rooted but not deleted or removed or frozen any such apps, your system will pass that OTA test.
Some OTA's also look for su being installed, and hiding su can fool that, depending...
Sometimes the OTA is just mean altogether, for your protection.

Good question phone hasn't arrived yet but definitely don't want crapbook and tweaker on it.

Sadly, on the first OTA for Mate2, removing one of the Huawei-created bloatware caused the update to fail. Don't know what the policy is now. So I'd keep backups of removed bloatware. (I think that the OTA was trying to update one of the missing bloatware but there was no option to ignore the error and continue with simply the OS upgrade.)

You can't apply OTA even if you unroot after root without even touching system apps. This is the case with 7X.
It's not the removing of bloat that causes problems with OTA's. It's what you have to do in order to remove bloat which is rooting the phone. Rooting modifies the system data which then fails the check performed when an OTA tries to install. Rooting modifies the system partition and adding twrp modifies the boot partition. So as of now doing anything other than unlocking the bootloader will give you problems whenever we get official OTA.

That's unfortunate. It has been many years since the Mate2 but I don't recall it being as restrictive back then. If I recall correctly, I was able to leave the phone rooted as long I restored stock bootloader and stock recovery. But the OTA failed when it was trying to update one or more of the Huawei apps so I only had to restore the boatware from TB.
I guess I should keep backups of all stock images before rooting. Thanks for the info.
This is very disheartening to hear. With the new additions (e. g. Facial recognition) supposedly incorporated into the next update, I would like to keep OTA. The other items taking up space on my phone is very annoying though. Oh well, I guess the apps aren't a big issue for now. I just wish Huawei would have let us choose our own apps.

Well eventually/hopefully, we'll get some devs to pick up development on the device where twrp, root, and custom roms will let us get our phones to the way we want them. I stayed away from twrp and rooting just for that reason. I just disabled all the crap they added that I don't use

Seeing that the initial popularity and price point for the quality of phone have been positive so far, I do think that will happen. I too am staying away until it occurs. I have ignored the apps I don't like for now, but truly miss apps like Adaway and Titanium Backup, which require root. Oh well, soon hopefully.
I have been able to remove a few apps
I've been rooting phones since the original (G1), but I've now arrived at the point where rooting is no longer the irresistible desire it used to be. I know heavily skinned versions of Android like EMUI & MIUI are not for everyone, but I actually enjoy them. I'm patiently waiting for the OTA. Once Oreo arrives, I might consider rooting, but I'm in no rush.
There are some apps you can uninstall without root.
You can uninstall third party apps like Facebook, that was the first thing I did
I haven't rooted or installed twrp yet until the L24 releases the stock firmware but as another user stated you can remove some of the third party apps. The ones that Huawei made system apps that can't be removed without root are the ones that would give problems with the ota like the stock launcher and the Sim toolkits and other various crap. I wish they would hurry up with the stock firmware release because there are some things I'd like to do that require root

But again, removing system apps could cause the ota to fail if one of those apps tries to get updated and it's not there
