Can I root Note 8 (N5110) and still get stock updates?

I want to know if I will forever lose the ability to install stock updates once I root my device. Can I "unroot" it in the future to seamlessly install stock updates? I don't want to mess with this too much as I want to rely on it for notes.

Yes. Use OTA rootkeeper to backup your root, then just temp unroot, install update, and restore root. Catch is, if you make any system changes that you can only make with root permissions, you'll likely not be able to get OTA updates. So just keep your system stock.

If I were to modify the Snote app, I guess that may mess with the OTA update right? What if I backup the unmodified app and then replace the modified one with the unmodified one when I want to do an OTA update, I guess that should be fine?

Depends on what you mean by modify. If you remove built in apks, yes, it'll keep you from getting OTA updates. If your modification requires root permissions, you run the chance of not getting OTA updates. Otherwise, you shouldn't have issues. In any case, restoring the stock app should allow you to get updates assuming nothing else is changed.

Are there any "non-root" mods for the S-note? Or perhaps can I install another version of s-note as a "non-system" app? I want to keep rooting as the last resort. Specifically, I am looking into modifying the background of a template.
I know I can manually choose a different background for the note, but I noticed that the option to insert a voice memo and the button to insert any object vanish after I change the background. See attached pictures. Is there a fix for this?

I don't have an answer for you unfortunately as my use of s note is very basic. I hope someone else can answer your questions.

If you root at all you lose OTA even if you do nothing and unroot. (I just went through this) Have you looked at any other apps that offer similar functionality to SNote or are you looking for multivendor? I know I we tried Papyrus and SPen voice but they were overkill for my needs.

I just figured out how to fix my problems with SNote. So I can stick with stock still.

Absolutely false. I have been through probably 5 different OTA updates on my stock, rooted Note 8, and restored root with OTA rootkeeper every time. You're doing something wrong. I have never flashed anything to the device, and once you start messing with recoveries, etc, you are no longer stock and will not get OTA updates.

Once I used the ToolKit to root, without a custom recovery, any attempt to update showed as altered and unavailable for updates even though I didn't flash anything. Whatever ToolKit did, triggered the need for triangle away on my Note 8. Moot point now as I have no plans to root again but if I do, I will look into OTA rootkeeper.

I don't know what the ToolKit does or what else you used it to do or what else you did with the system after rooting, but just plain root does not alter the system. Even apps like Adfree that modify the hosts file don't cause the system to be altered. If you remove system APKs though, that will do it. Like I said, I am still rooted despite all of the updates that I received. And I do not temp unroot prior to searching for updates, I temp unroot once the update is already downloaded.

My concern was how to obtain a custom background for the notes in S-note. I did it using the "change background" feature but I did so with the "memo" template. And the memo template doesn't have certain features like inserting images, audio memo etc. Given that I am new to Samsung and touchwiz I was unaware about this. I fixed this "problem" by putting my custom background on one of the other templates...
The only other thing I need root for is for removing Ads. BUT, thankfully there is the "Adblockplus" android app on their website that allows me to do this WITHOUT root! :highfive: On Android, nothing is impossible!

I have rooted my device as well. What i want to ask is, is there a way to completely unroot and have the device check whether there are any updates?
I did use the unroot function but when I checked for any updates, it told me that the device had been modified..

Sounds like you modified the system in some way. Only way out is to unmodify it ie: ODIN or use kies to go back to stock. Might as well just use kies to install the latest update.

When that happened to me, I couldn't even use Kies to recover so I used the ToolKit and triangle away to get a stock ROM on it.

I have the same problem. As far as I know I've only done a standard root, but OTA says the device has been modified and Kies says my firmware version doesn't support upgrading. Obviously something has modified something
As I'm in Australia we probably won't get a 4.2.2 upgrade anyway so at the moment I wouldn't have anything to upgrade to even if I could...

If you first use supersu option to unroot you can can get ota. Been there done that.
There is a post on this forum somewhere. Can't remember where, but it can be done if you follow the instruction in the post.
Do a search of the forums to find it. It's there!

To root or not to root?

So I got my phone today and rooted it directly. When I was browsing through the apps, I saw it has an update but it didn't let me install it because the phone was rooted. So, I had to go back to stock rom with a kdz file wiping everything, which seems to be the latest rom right now. I'm thinking about if i should root or not right now. Will I have to wipe everything again when the phone gets another update? Are you all in this situation or do i not know something correctly?

Some how I was able to install latest ota with root and also nothing was wiped.
Im not 100% sure but I think you can unroot with SuperSU then ota should go through but I may be wrong.

If you want to use apps like g3 tweaksbox, titanium backup etc, you will need root! I think you can do so much more when your Phone is rooted, so i would root it immediately!

I also took an OTA for my F460S while rooted and it worked. My phone also is fine (it didn't die, crash or kill itself). When I get my next OTA I'll upload a video to show that it does work for some odd reason (only for a few people that I have seen). The benefits of rooting outweigh the drawbacks. If you root your phone, than you should be comfortable flashing a KDZ to restore it.

OTA updates often modify existing pre-installed apps, otherwise known as bloatware, so they check to be sure those targets are present and unmodified. If you have rooted but not deleted or removed or frozen any such apps, your system will pass that OTA test.
Some OTA's also look for su being installed, and hiding su can fool that, depending...
Sometimes the OTA is just mean altogether, for your protection.

FireTV 1 unrooted?

Hi all,
I'd previously rooted, installed recovery, etc on my FireTV version 1. Everything was working great, and I thought I'd disabled updates. I turned it on recently and It somehow lost root. Everything is still installed, but can't open SuperSU, towelroot says the device isn't supported. Still says that Xposed is installed with the framework though.
The system says I'm now on 51.1.4.1_user_514013920 for some reason. Checking for system update still gives an error. What went wrong, and is there any way to fix it?

If you disabled updates its probably the fact that the fire tv has updated its self, im afraid thats why su (root) isnt working & your device isn't supported because your firmware has upgraded. You have no way to root at the moment in time unless a os5 root for AFTV gen1 is created sometime in the near future? It is possible because Rbox is making a Os5 root for Gen 1.... But i think you need root already for that? My advice would be if you still want root, get a AFTV 2 while root is still possible & root/block updates & wait for the new recovery & rom being developed by Rbox which fingers crossed should be very near to be released. I still cant get over why you would want to unblock updates for when you had root & exposed framework? oh well whats done is done now.

That's very confusing?
Disabling updates should've been the first thing you did after rooting (presumably a long time ago if you have gen 1.)
Disabling updates, successfully or not, shouldn't've caused you to lose root. If you have CWM, your aftv should not be able to receive a stock update. Of course towel root won't work because your firmware is based on stock software that is not rootable. Are you certain you did nothing else other than disable updates?
I'm basing all of this off the assumption you have CWM. If so then just push the same firmware you currently have installed to /sdcard and flash it again. Install busybox and I'd think you'd be ok. You probably already know this but aftvnews has all rbox's prerooted roms.

Maybe you only disabled ota on your router? Have you taken it anywhere else? Or got a new router?

I'm not looking to get another device, but to restore this one. I still have cwm, busybox, supersu all installed (I think I still have cwm, don't remember how to boot to it). I still don't believe you can just flash a rooted rom over top...

If the firmware has gone to an updated latest unrootable firmware I'm sure what ever you flash onto it will brick your device even if you do have cwm?

You're not understanding. First, the firmware you have MUST have boot menu installed. Therefore you can choose to boot recovery from there. OR connect adb and reboot recovery. Adbfire simplifies this...
You should be fine to flash a prerooted rom and it should fix whatever got messed up.
Again, theres NO way youre running stock because im fairly certain rbox's recovery wont allow the installation. Theres an issue with you su no doubt but im thinking youre still rooted.

Sorry I missed this thread until now. Do you know what version pre-rooted ROM you had installed last? You say it's on 51.1.4.1, but are you positive that is not the version it was always on? If by some strange way it did install a stock update, there's no way it would have updated to 51.1.4.1 since Amazon is pushing 51.1.6.3 to all devices now. Just because you can't open SuperSU doesn't mean you lost root. What happens when you connect via ADB and enter the "su" command? Is your bootloader unlocked? Here's how to check.

Huh, looks like everything is still good. I ADB in and "su" still shows [email protected] I guess I still have root and unlocked bootloader. I disabled automatic updates again just in case, it says "Package com.android.dcp new state: disabled". I feel like I should update the the ROM though as my install is feeling a bit awkward. Is there a guide on AFTVnews?
EDIT: I just checked and I don't have RBOX's Boot Menu installed. Does that mean I should downgrade to 51.1.4.0, install the boot menu, then upgrade the ROM in that order?

Only issue right now is the google play store. I installed it as in your guide, but it keeps updating and won't work at all on version 6.0.5. I saw this user UnderXP (http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/help/how-to-disable-google-play-store-auto-t3135642/page2) who used XPrivacy to stop the storee/services from auto updating. I've had no luck at it.
What do you recommend?

I haven't looked into the Google Play Store in a while. I plan to update my guide once Fire OS 5 is released to older devices, since any changes I make now likely won't work after the update.

Rooted - how to take/block OTAs?

Recently picked up a Z Play and rooted it (unlocked bootloader, flashed chinese TWRP, flashed Phhh Superuser (and app/Magisk) and I've got everything set up just the way I want it. How do I prevent an OTA from coming through and ruining things or is that something I need to go checking for manually?
Also, when the N update is available, what would be the most advisable way of updating? I have only owned Nexus phones prior to this, so I'm not sure if I should expect Moto to post update factory images for me to flash like google always did the day they released updates, or if there will be some faster/better way?

You can use some sort of root app which has a freezing option, like Titanium Backup.
You have to freeze the "Motorola Updateservices" which is in shown in the attached pictures. "Auftauen" means unfreeze, because i already deactivated the updates service.
For the Nougat question, i would wait until somebody can proof that root is still working flawless before updating.

Use a good filer like Solid classic, go privapp, find 3c OTA (try this 1st) or 3c checkin, change .apk to .apk.bak.
Reboot.
You do not have to fuss with permissions if you just rename.

Unroot HTC 10 to Get Oreo

Hi,
My HTC 10 is rooted, S-On, SU, boot loader unlocked, and running stock Nougat 7.0. As such, it doesn't get onlver the air {OTA}. I want OREO, and I understand that requires me to unroot. How do I unroot?
I hope to do an OTA and then reroot. If I really don't have to unroot, tell me please what to do to get OREO. My main attraction to rooting is to install AdAway.

These are what I did;
1. restore my stock rom via TWRP (which I backed-up long time ago)
2. flash back stock recovery (which I found form XDA). It will replace TWRP
3. OEM relocked
By then, I could get couple OTAs until I reach to Oreo.
After that, I went all the ways again => unlock bootloader (HtcDev) => flash latest TWRP => and so on.

You really only need steps 1 and 2 from bita's post. If you don't have a stock system backup you can probably find one in the Backups thread.
Else, you can flash an ruu which will take you back fully stock but will also wipe your phone in the process.

This is exactly what I need. I interpret "OEM relocked" to mean that after flashing, you system was relocked, and you didn't have to separately relock your bootloader. I appreciate your help.

Oddly, I was hoping you'd see my post because if the great help you have given to others. I deleted my stock backup by mistake last year.
My TWRP and Titanium backups are on an SD card, so I will remove the card to protect them during the process in case things go crazy.
I noticed that SU has an unroot button, but I guess that only covers part of the process.

No problem. Yes, once you root with superSU, your system partition will be flagged permanently as modified even if you unroot. That's why you need to flash a virgin system backup image. This is also why I root with Magisk, as it makes taking OTA much easier. You may want to consider that as well when you root again.

I don't quite understand Magisk yet, but I will look into it. Thanks for making this doable and understandable.

I have installed the developer version, but I haven't received it. Also I knew that HTC had removed the OTA

U.S Unlocked has not yet received OTA. To go to Oreo you'll have to run the RUU.

For several years now I've been getting help from you people and for that I am very appreciative. This is my first, of what I hope are many more posts.
I recently purchased a Sprint HTC 10 phone here in the Dominican Republic. It was factory unlocked already. It came with stock Oreo software. Yesterday I received an Oreo update, and this immediately locked my phone sim. I couldn't use it. Now thanks to you guys, I slept like at 1 am, but finally managed to get the phone unlocked thanks to this thread.
Now I have a problem. I'm not that of a techie guy to leave the phone rooted. Is it wise to unrooted back again? My main concern is, if I unroot the phone it will revert to having the sim lock, and that's a no go. So my question is: Do I unrooted? Can I, without damaging the phone? And if the answer is no, how do I proceed with my rooted phone to get the best out of it? I saw this video on youtube, it seems nice, but it is from 2015. Do I follow those steps or do something else to take advantage of my rooted device.
I would really appreciate your help.

The only downside to being rooted is that you won't be able to take OTA updates any longer, or use certain apps that don't work with rooted devices (mostly banking apps). I'm almost 100% sure we won't get any more OTA updates for this phone, so unless you really need to use banking apps, I would leave the device rooted. Plus there are some nice things you can do while being rooted.
If you're rooted with Magisk you can still do all of the above.

Thx Tarima. If so, what can I do with a rooted device? What are my inmediate options to upgrade the phone. Any ideas?

I thought you could take OTA?
I am WAY out of the info as I don't take them, but I'll search a little an come back with any findings.

Unless you're rooted with Magisk systemless root, you can't take OTA from a rooted state until you restore a stock system image, which I'm thinking might undo the SIM unlock procedure the OP had to do on his Sprint device.

That's what I was saying, there will 99% for sure be no other updates for this phone, so that's a non-issue. And if there is, you can run an RUU, return to stock, take the update, then do the sim unlock procedure again.
I do with root:
- Use Titanium Backup (great app backup app)
- Use F.lux app for blue light reduction
- Use Adaway ad blocker

What do you mean by "process for those"? They're apps, you just install them from the play store
Actually I think Adaway needs to be downloaded from their own site

Downloaded the one for blue light. How about the adaway one? When dowloading the files within the app, it does not allow me and reads:
"copying of host file failed"
