last few days i have a ridiculous battery drain from androidos - this is new
no new programs installed
on 7.1.1 stock
anyone else have similar experience>?
Doesn't seem to matter what version you're on or what phone. If it has android Google will eventually target you for some data/battery drain. Mine went from 100% to 59% over night doing nothing - this is on a Nexus 6 runniong 6.0.1. I usually only drop 3%-10% at night, but every once in a while i get hit with the google tax.
There is a lot of news around about a bad update sent out by Facebook and Facebook Messenger that are causing battery drain issues. If you use these apps you may want to uninstall, restart and then reinstall to clear out the issue.

Facebook Messenger destroyed my battery yesterday. I opened the app twice and it caused 20%+ battery drain between charges. Guess that really shouldn't be a surprise given the developer...

Try downloading Wakelock Detector, if you're rooted. Very informative on what is keeping your device awake when your screen is off.

To my knowledge, there's really no way to troubleshoot wakelocks without root and Wakelock Detector. I used it and was able to identify nlpcollectorwakelock as my biggest problem. Other smaller ones were identified as well. This was all because my device was awake 100% of the time and Google Play Services were eating majority of the battery. I don't know specifically about the drain on androidOS, but the first step I would take would be root + Wakelock Detector.

Are you on the January security update? I've read a few posts about androidOS battery drain and they seem to all be on the Jan update. I'm still on the Dec. update. Maybe over the weekend, I'll update and see if I can replicate your issue and find what's causing the drain since I will be rooted

We have got the same problem with Galaxy Note 3, stock rom, rooted. At some point in the night, this *overflow* starts to keep the phone awake and uses 40% of battery in less than 3 hours.
There is no widget on any homescreen.

Unfortunately Wakelock Detector doesn't show anything uncommon. I deinstalled Spotify and Quizduell Premium, rebooted the phone again - and the problem seems to be gone.
This really is strange behaviour and Android should by now be able to find out those problems by itself. This reminds me of Windows, which after over a decade still struggles with problems and you have to install tools to solve them - or reinstall the whole system.
Hi, I know this is an older thread but I've been having the same problem recently and I tried to Google a solution to the problem and found this thread. I too have had high battery drain from Google Services. The phone is basically awake at all times. GSAM Battery Monitor lists *overflow* as the main culprit.
I have location services turned off and I turned off syncing of all accounts except for Gmail. I uninstalled all updates to Google Services and any apps associated with it. I have rebooted the phone multiple times. I'm pretty sure I've tried every battery saving tip I can possibly find and nothing seems to solve the problem. Every now and then I'll get a day of amazing battery life and think my problems are behind me; then it will go back to the same terrible battery life without me changing any settings or changing the way I use the phone.

Is anyone else having big battery drain since updating to JB? I used to get 2 full days now i can't get 16 hours my phone is staying awake. I'm stock unrooted using juice defender plus. Thanks in advance.
I don't get as much battery I get about 8-14 hrs with 2-4 screen in time I use to get 10-20 hr with 3-4 hr screen on time. I hope they realise a update to help fix the issue seems like quite a few are having.

Yes. I suspect you're probably having the same problem as me. Ever since upgrading to JellyBean, the battery is horrible. Checked BetterBatteryStats, and it's because of msm_otg, it's constantly hitting the device with kernel wakelocks. If I look at CPU states, my phone has been in 384 MHz for 97% of the time, deep sleep 0% of the time. Since it's not sleeping, the battery is draining much faster.
It has something to do with USB on-the-go, but I can't figure it out.
I am having opposite experience. I am getting incredible(to me) battery life. Fully charge yesterday at 430pm and this morning after a bit of texting and calls, battery is at 80%. Pretty good and should be able to get at minimum 1.5 days usage out of it at current rate.
Also, disable Google Now. That's known to be a huge batt drainer.

Did notice my battery was draining more before JB. Once I downloaded JB my battery seemed to drain worse. Finally figured out it was Nova launcher, so switched back to TW and battery is back to normal, with google now on, mainly just get traffic and weather for now.

I apologize for posting in the wrong section. The battery drain continues even after disabling Google Now uninstalling Facebook, pandora and other apps and turning off gps, bluetooth. Andriod OS is staying awake and killing the battery. In data usage delete apps is running in the background at 43 mb? Anyone else?
For me it started with LI3 then into JB.
I noticed Media was at the top of my list when i checked what apps were using battery.
So i ended up disabling the com.sec.android.providers.downloads and so far i think this has helped get my device back to normal battery life..

I don't like any apps that are supposed to save your battery. they usually contribute to battery drain. get better battery stats and see what's causing wakelocks. it's probably location services related to google now. when you don't need it, turn off gps AND location services

enable restrictions and make sure your wifi isn't when not needed same with your Data. if you don't have 4g, turn on only CDMA data. went from 50% every 4 hours just to 15%

Exact same issue for me. I will try this.
I have had severe battery drain for a few days now. I disabled google now yesterday and that didn't change anything. My phone was constantly warm. Today, I turned airplane mode on and the battery still drained. It got down to 58%. I read somewhere in this forum that the google maps update was causing some battery drain so I uninstalled the update at 58% battery life. Three hours later I had 57% battery life. So, for now I can only assume that it was google maps that was consuming my battery. I will have to try updating maps again to make this a more concrete assumption.

Both FB and FB Messenger were doing this to me. Have you tried Greenify? It's even better if you're rooted. It puts those apps into hibernation, essentially stopping them from waking up on their own. However, be aware that if you use push features of those apps, then hibernation may not work. There is a workaround for that in the paid Greenify app. Either way, Greenify made the decision to finally root the 5x worth it all on its own.
I'm having the same problem. It started happening a few updates ago.
Started having this problem a few weeks ago...both apps were not letting my device sleep. Ended up deleting both apps...I'm sure greenify would fix the issue, but they definitely did something screwy so it no longer sleeps.

Yap, I tried beta also... Didn't help.
I'm rooted, but greenify...I don't know... It's some kind of workaround, I agree, but than you stay without push. Than suddenly that's not app I wanna use ...
This Android wakelocks really make me sick ...
I used to have loads of wake lock from both the Facebook app and Messenger app. Fixed it by uninstalling and installing again. Not sure if it'll come back again though.

Ever since I updated to 8.1.0 with December security patch, I've noticed my battery draining faster than normal. I was getting 4-5 hours of SOT with around 45-50% battery left. This was after being off the charger for 12-16 hours. Now I'm getting about half the SOT at similar numbers. Anyone have any ideas?

Excuse my stating the obvious, but you need to find what process or app is using the battery. You should be able to get a rough idea just using the new features under Settings>>Battery. It will identify which apps are using the most juice. Run the phone in Safe Mode to see if your battery life goes back to normal. It could also be a service like Google Play Service which sometimes wigs out and starts chewing battery. Are you rooted? If you need more detailed information there are battery drain apps available to help isolate the problem (BBS and GSam). These apps require root to give the best results.

Not rooted and currently locked. I've downloaded GSAM and have adb permissions and it simply says things like Chrome, RCS Phone and Play services. If you see from the photos below you can see what I'm talking about. Chrome currently isn't that bad, but yesterday and the past couple days it's been like 9% or more of the battery.

Two things: I've never seen phone or kernel use that much battery. On one page phone usage is 33 seconds, yet it used 9% ? I think RCS is running the background all the time. See if you can toggle it to not run in the background under Settings>>Apps>. High kernel I'm guessing is a kernel wakelock or multiple. You've probably loaded app(s) that are creating the problem, but you need to find out which one is causing the wakelocks. There is a wakelock detector "lite" app that doesn't need root but I don't know how well it works. I know the root version works well. Lastly, on the first screenshot with the battery, scroll to the bottom of the page and see which apps are listed there. I'd be willing to bet if you ran the phone in Safe Mode, your battery drain would disappear, meaning your user apps are causing it.

Well in safe mode my drain is gone so I'm not sure which app is doing it, but to directly answer your question about the RCS it is an overall app meaning it is related to several Google play services. I'll upload a photo of it. I have to reboot into normal mode.
Edit: I'm wrong about that it was the play services.. I'll have to start uninstalling the apps to determine which one is draining the battery I guess.

RCS can be a real battery hog, but I don't know why. I don't have RCS on AT&T. Do you use Messages as your primary SMS? Open Settings>>Advanced and see if you can toggle off "Enhanced Features". Open properties and check if it is using battery optimization. If it is not, set Messages to battery optimization. You can always turn these back on later if the battery drain remains.
My battery life has been restored to pretty much the same as it was with 8.0. I also noticed poor battery life after installing the 8.1 update, even though they changed the way battery life is estimated with this update (supposedly). Something just felt off, but now everything feels great! I am fairly certain what changed is installing the Greenify Magisk module and/or the Google play services doze module (this enables battery optimization on the Google play services app). Not sure which one really made the difference because I installed them at the same time. However, there is definitely a major difference!!

In my experience that's really good.
Before 8.1 I noticed about 11% per hour during screen on use and about 0.33% per hour while on stand by in my pocket or a little bit better if it's just sitting on my night stand not moving while I'm sleeping (I think doze is more extreme in that situation) which seems to match what you are getting. Based on that screen shot I think that's like 8 hours screen on time over like 35 hours for a full charge. I've done a little bit better but not much. That's excellent battery life.
Since 8.1 it has dropped. Best now is maybe 7 to MAYBE 7.5 hours over maybe 26-28 hours. In my experience battery life always drops after an update but this case is far from the worst. I remember when my Nexus 5 updated from KitKat to Lollipop. The battery drop was awful and to make matters worse the battery life of the Nexus 5 was pretty bad to begin with.

So in my last reply I thought I was wrong about RCS Phone app being a conglomerate of several apps in the phone. For some reason I couldn't find the information I needed at that time. I wiped my phone and started over after posting this thread. I was trying to isolate the misbehaving app. I thought it might have been greenify actually, but no the drain has returned to a lesser extent though. Here's some photos of this RCS app from GSAM.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/rvw077mBfNULbsRE3
I'm not sure what is causing the drain at this point. I've installed Better Battery Stats to locate the wakelocks so I can ignore them through ADB.

Have you tried disabling RCS ? (Post #6). BBS is good for idle drain, active drain not so much. It's best run overnight without touching the phone for 8 hours or so. Pick the phone up in the morning and create/save a log file as quickly as possible. Post the log to the BBS thread if you need help deciphering.

I cannot disable it since it is comprised of multiple apps. You can see it in the pics on my last post.

I'm no stranger to Android and troubleshooting problems, but right now I'm honestly at a loss as to what is causing my battery drain. I'm losing a little over 1% per hour while the device is in doze overnight, adding up to around 10-12% over 8 hours. Previously the max I would lose was close to 5%. I can't pinpoint exactly when something went rogue, but I want to say it was after the January update. I don't think I've added any new apps. I've obviously tried to clear data/cache in Google Play Services among some other apps too.
I've tried to use the battery historian, GSam, BBS, you name it. GSam is showing my device as constantly waking up overnight while in deep doze, but I can't attribute that to any wakelocks. BBS is basically clean as far as partial wakelocks go, and battery historian shows that 7% of the battery drain is unaccounted for. The one thing I have seen a few nights now is the Significant Motion that's in Google Play Services. I've also seen that under Phone and under Android System. I'm wondering if it's some kind of sensor, but I can't figure out what is causing it to stay on. I keep my phone on my nightstand overnight.
My next steps are going to be turning off always on display (AOD), turning on airplane mode overnight, and then doing a factory reset. I'll report back for anyone that comes across here, but I wanted to see if anyone has had similar issues.
I'm attaching a few screenshots, maybe someone can pick up something I'm missing.

Are you rooted by chance? I've seen this mentioned in a couple other threads. Seems the culprit has something to do with GPS's, tethering in developer options, wifi and bluetooth scanning or a rouge app. Most all the cases I've seen have been since the 8.1 update.
Solutions I've seen...turn off everything in the pic.
Clear cache/data on play services(kinda risky)
Clean flash the January update with fastboot.
Turn off bluetooth and wifi scanning.
Check your router setup(some wifi setups like to keep waking the device. I get this in hotels at times)
Try turning wifi off at night.
How many apps are using location services?(I had a weather app that was keeping my device awake)
This can definitely be a bugger to identify. Sure hope you find it ?

I am rooted. I've got WiFi/bluetooth scanning off, but I did just notice that Tethering hardware acceleration was on. I'm turning that off. I'll see how that goes tonight, if it's still draining then I'll try turning WiFi off and see what happens.
I've got GasBuddy, Google, Play Services, Maps, and WTForecast using location. None of those usually show up in any battery stats aside from Play Services.

Wtf weather was the one giving me trouble at one time. I just turned a few things off on that one. Are you using the "enable doze for GSM" magisk module like in the pic. That really seems to keep google play services in check :good:

I wouldn't worry about turning off AOD saving you a bunch, I turned mine off and didn't notice any diff at all in overnight batt drain, so set it to DIM, and still haven't noticed any additional batt drain from when it was off.
If you really want to be a miser without totally losing AOD,
"always on" OFF,
"Lift to check phone" ON,
(Settings>Display>Ambient display>)
set it to DIM (Settings>Display>Screen Saver>Current Screen Saver gear>Night mode checked)
which is how mine is set up

I've been trying to avoid using that module just because I don't want to delay anything from GCM, but I'm going to look into it if I can't identify another culprit.

GCM = Google Cloud Messaging, it's integrated into apps for push notifications. My (perhaps incorrect) assumption is that by dozing Play Services, you could delay push notifications for other apps.

Haven't noticed any delay what so ever with any push notifications from any apps. Google or otherwise :good:
I lost 11% overnight (8 hours), I have Amplify, Enable Doze for Google Play Services Magisk module and ForceDoze, and still getting that drain.
Could it be these apps conflicting with one another?
I noticed this as well and it seems to have started after the January update. Although mine isn't quite as bad. Pre-January update I was losing about 2-3% in like 8 hours. I'm now losing that much in like 4-5 hours. There were 2 days in a row where I actually lost like 15-18% over like 7 hours.

Get rid of amplify and forcedoze. Then see what happens. You've got too many things trying to do the same thing!
The Jan update has been ****. I would get almost 7 hrs SOT with 20% left. Now all I get is ****ty 4 hrs and phone at 10%. Usage wise it's the same since day 1 nothing new as such. No rogue app on BBS. This is messed up.

Yeah I had a feeling that could be it. I'll give it a shot by removing them, thanks for the suggestion! :highfive:

Try to run "su" and then "top" from terminal,
See what is your top process,
In one occassion, my magisk hide stucked up and using 30%++ of CPU all the time, even when idle, and that drain the battery in no time,
Am on 8.1 Jan, Kiriskura Kernel,
Tweak applied is Brevent, Amplify and my own EnableDoze for GMS.
Never lost more than 5% in 9 hours of sleep. Average is 2-3% with wifi on. Less than 2% when network is totally off

My bad. I forgot that it was a special build by another user. Install it from magisk manager. If it doesn't install, then flash it in twrp.
