Are you using the latest beta?
Some versions of messenger has serious problems with wakelocks. Update if you can.

Both FB and FB Messenger were doing this to me. Have you tried Greenify? It's even better if you're rooted. It puts those apps into hibernation, essentially stopping them from waking up on their own. However, be aware that if you use push features of those apps, then hibernation may not work. There is a workaround for that in the paid Greenify app. Either way, Greenify made the decision to finally root the 5x worth it all on its own.

I'm having the same problem. It started happening a few updates ago.

Started having this problem a few weeks ago...both apps were not letting my device sleep. Ended up deleting both apps...I'm sure greenify would fix the issue, but they definitely did something screwy so it no longer sleeps.

Yap, I tried beta also... Didn't help.
I'm rooted, but greenify...I don't know... It's some kind of workaround, I agree, but than you stay without push. Than suddenly that's not app I wanna use ...
This Android wakelocks really make me sick ...

I used to have loads of wake lock from both the Facebook app and Messenger app. Fixed it by uninstalling and installing again. Not sure if it'll come back again though.

Some people have complained about FB messenger problems due to wakelocks on the 5x. Some have switched to Disa as a workaround.

[Q] FroYo, Facebook keeps awake

Hi Guys.
Noticed after my update (using about phone, on time/wake time aswell as *#*#4636#*#* Battery usage, partial wake screen), The new facebook app appears to be keeping my phone awake.
I disabled all facebook syncing, and rebooted the phone, and it sleeps fine,
went into the facebook app, refreshed (which worked fine), and went back to home... and now then the phone stayed awake.
Currently I'm going through the process of seeing if the facebook 'syncing' (without actually opening the facebook for HTC app) to see if that does the same thing.
I just thought I'd come here to see if anyone else is having the same issue?
I think I have the same issue. Facebook is suddenly the number one 'partial wake usage'..
ditto same here, i got no friends so gonna disable it.
i have notice if you load the app and go into settings you can turn the refresh to never, seems to work for me and then just manual refresh whenever i want to use it.
i do get an app/item called "college" mysteriously switching on?
I've found so far that in "Accounts and sync", Facebook sync causes the same issue. Facebook for HTC however does not.
My girlfriend just got the facebook update on her Legend, which is still running 2.1
I will keep an eye on it to see if it has the same issue - It's starting to look like a Facebook issue, not a HTC Froyo update issue. Which is a *****, because i use it a lot and the new update is slick.
EDIT: not sure on the 'college' thing, haven't seen that myself.
somehow i'm not seeing this issue, will have to investigate further when i get home from work
Well , if someone like me decides to go back to 1.2, it's easy. Just uninstall the Facebook app and will uninstall the update only. 1.2 is system app.
This is well documents guys here http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/apps/application.php?id=74769995908&ref=ts, so it's something that there sure to address as my phone went from fully charged this morning to empty in the space of 6 hrs. Normally it lasts me the full day.
I did wonder where the hell all my battery went! Removed. It was still rubbish as it just took you to the site for everything.
The girlfriends Legend doesn't seem to suffer the same problems.
(though 'facebook for HTC sense' syncing seems to be causing her phone to stay awake.)
I don't understand why so many developers are falling into this wake-lock issue? It's becoming a serious problem for Android.
SORRY

Have you got a link to this?
Mine seems like it sleeps, but still the wake time is huge.
Uptime: 33:59:30
Awake time: 23:57:55
Wth, only 10 hours sleep in 33 hours :/
EDIT: yes, at partial wake Facebook has huge line, and android system and dialer a really tiny ones.
Disabled "Facebook for HTC" sync from accounts and sync, rebooting, and will see how it goes.

I also tried this, if it seems to work for you try opening the facebook app (without sync enabled) and see what happens. (Just the app, even with sync and notifications off, is enough to keep my phone awake)
Yea I'm having the same issue !! where is the link to Google's acknowledgement?
I got this issue as well !! Bloody Facebook
I always set the Refresh to NEVER and not using notification.
Where is the Google acknowledgement of this issue?
Hope this will be fixed soon.
In the meantime, reboot the phone and dont use Facebook app!

Sorry.
I posted this into the wrong thread. The fix was about the Gmail sybc problem.
Sorry
Yup this is a problem with the facebook 1.3 update.
http://geekfor.me/news/facebook-1-3-wakelock/
I uninstalled the update and went back to 1.2 for now.
I don't think its just Froyo either.... i'm on 2.1 and the new 1.3 facebook update.
My battery seems to be taking a pasting with CPU time very high for the facebook service.
Same problem here. "Time spent without sleeping: 100%" and Facebook app in "Partial wake usage" had a bar the size of the great wall of china. Uninstalled, the touch site is better anyway.

[Q] Sleepless apps

Anyone know just why various apps prevent the phone from sleeping despite the fact they are not shown to be running, nor reported by Spare Parts as the culprit? I mean there are some apps I've had to uninstall to get my phone to sleep, but can't figure out why it is happening. I've been using Spare Parts to see if I can catch the bad actor, but it only will tell me if it is not sleeping and the other options don't hint at the problem either. I use my wife's Epic (which never has a problem sleeping) to compare against, as she has fewer apps. If an app is not running in the background but keeps the phone away just by it's very presence on the phone, what can cause that and why is there no way to find out the culprit besides hit and miss deleting? Too bad there's not a Wakelock app or setting on the phone that you could use to let you have the app, but keep it quiet.
Rogue apps like this seem to be the number one issue with huge battery use.
You can do stuff like disable background data sync... Uninstall facebook and apps like it. Remove widgets... etc..
But in the end it's such a PITA to manage... and when you finally get it working right, all it takes is "hey this looks cool... /download" and you're back where you started.
You're probably best off buying an extended battery.... My phone lasts 10 hours now with whatever it is that keeps my phone from sleeping.
Have you tried using Watchdog?

Yes, I tried it, but it apparently only warns if an app reaches some threshold of cpu usage. It didn't help me find an app that was only preventing my phone from sleeping...unless I wasn't using it correctly.

We have got the same problem with Galaxy Note 3, stock rom, rooted. At some point in the night, this *overflow* starts to keep the phone awake and uses 40% of battery in less than 3 hours.
There is no widget on any homescreen.

Better Battery Stats or Wakelock Detector will help you to figure out what app(s) are causing it.

Unfortunately Wakelock Detector doesn't show anything uncommon. I deinstalled Spotify and Quizduell Premium, rebooted the phone again - and the problem seems to be gone.
This really is strange behaviour and Android should by now be able to find out those problems by itself. This reminds me of Windows, which after over a decade still struggles with problems and you have to install tools to solve them - or reinstall the whole system.
Hi, I know this is an older thread but I've been having the same problem recently and I tried to Google a solution to the problem and found this thread. I too have had high battery drain from Google Services. The phone is basically awake at all times. GSAM Battery Monitor lists *overflow* as the main culprit.
I have location services turned off and I turned off syncing of all accounts except for Gmail. I uninstalled all updates to Google Services and any apps associated with it. I have rebooted the phone multiple times. I'm pretty sure I've tried every battery saving tip I can possibly find and nothing seems to solve the problem. Every now and then I'll get a day of amazing battery life and think my problems are behind me; then it will go back to the same terrible battery life without me changing any settings or changing the way I use the phone.

Lost 50% Battery Overnight

I've had the phone for near a week now and this is the first time doze has failed me. Left it alone at 10pm with about 50% left and looks like it went to zero in about four hours. (screenshot) I've tested other nights and it worked as expected -- wifi and cell coming on and off periodically. When checking usage, I was disturbed to find Facebook took up 25% of my battery. Is there some way Facebook is overriding doze?

Wow. Looks like it was constantly awake during that time. You didn't happen to turn on photo syncing with Facebook?

Facebook is one of the worst when it comes to battery drains, I stopped using it and i just use a browser to stay logged in. Snapchat is also pretty bad, I think it was top 3 in my list while I slept earlier. First time happening, i turned off location on snapchat, ill see if that helps

Same here. Facebook did this to me back when I had an HTC Hero, killed my battery in 8 hours no problem. The moment they changed the application to a "service" and had those wake-lock bugs I ditched it, never looked back.
No application should install itself as an always-on service unless its there for push messages. I decided that having my phone last all day was more important than getting facebook messages immediately.

I stopped using Snapchat a while ago for that reason. Facebook, however, never really gave me a problem on my N6. It usually hovered around 6-7% use. No app is worth that much drain, let alone Facebook. If this is a normal occurrence, I'll probably just uninstall it.

Hopefully this was a one time occurrence since it worked fine on my N6. I've got no problem getting rid of it though, because like you said, I'd rather have my phone last all day (or night in this case).
Second Night Update
While I agree the Facebook app is bad, it looks like it was not the culprit. Uninstalled, doze again failed to kick in overnight and drained 18% over about seven hours. Not as bad as the 50% the first time, but still no bueno. It looks like Android OS kept it awake for seven hours. I know doze is pretty new, but there are some smart people here; anyone got any ideas/theories as to what's going on and remedy? Screenshots

Good to know I'm not alone! Even after uninstalling Facebook I've got the same problem with Android OS keeping it on. I'm considering clearing the cache and see if that changes anything.
Wow you have a perfectly diagonal line. Try a battery monitoring app. Might have more useful information as to what is draining overnight.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
I did a factory reset and installed ~10 of my most used apps instead of restoring all apps and it's been sleeping fine now, no wakelocks
I also turned off WiFi and Bluetooth scanning, location services are on battery saving, and Google location reporting is off
I am willing to bet there are going to be some hiccups with marshmallow or even some newer hardware features of the phone and some apps until everything gets up to speed.
Just wondering, what build are you guys on? MDA89E or MDB08I?? I'm on MDA89E
I got 08I immediately after turning it on, Ive always lost like 1-2% overnight.
Maybe that is what the last-minute update was for, fixing that bug that you (unfortunately) found.

last few days, androidOS battery drain

last few days i have a ridiculous battery drain from androidos - this is new
no new programs installed
on 7.1.1 stock
anyone else have similar experience>?
Doesn't seem to matter what version you're on or what phone. If it has android Google will eventually target you for some data/battery drain. Mine went from 100% to 59% over night doing nothing - this is on a Nexus 6 runniong 6.0.1. I usually only drop 3%-10% at night, but every once in a while i get hit with the google tax.
There is a lot of news around about a bad update sent out by Facebook and Facebook Messenger that are causing battery drain issues. If you use these apps you may want to uninstall, restart and then reinstall to clear out the issue.

Facebook Messenger destroyed my battery yesterday. I opened the app twice and it caused 20%+ battery drain between charges. Guess that really shouldn't be a surprise given the developer...

To my knowledge, there's really no way to troubleshoot wakelocks without root and Wakelock Detector. I used it and was able to identify nlpcollectorwakelock as my biggest problem. Other smaller ones were identified as well. This was all because my device was awake 100% of the time and Google Play Services were eating majority of the battery. I don't know specifically about the drain on androidOS, but the first step I would take would be root + Wakelock Detector.
