phone sudden heat spikes.. - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

my phone is working as usual , the temperatures are well within range, playing an online game in 4g at a temp around 30 degree Celcius, gets my phone to around 37-39 degree Celcius in sensors in CPUZ and msm_therm goes around 39.
but now for these 2 days, my phone just by unlocking or browsing gets sudden heat spikes like sensors go 55-60s and msm goes till 48.. but sometime afterthat, it behaves normally as if nothing happened.. what is really happening. i have no clue.cleared cache and all.
Update: i locked my phone clearing all my apps, after few minutes it returned to room temp, but again, reamining locked, my phones temps was kinda hot, when i unlocked it and checked, the temps were spiking around55-62 in sensors, and 44-45 in msm_therm.
what should I do?

I don't know If it's the same problem, but yesterday i was about to grab my phone, it was really hot. Maybe beyond 60 celcius. I quickly checked battery stats. The system was eating an enormous amount of power (1000mah) (see attached pictures) , I rebooted and it's all normal now. [Nougat] [OOS4] [Experience Rom 5.0]

I was playing clash royale in 4g with surrounding temperature around 27C. the CPU was near 35-36.
and i locked the phone. 5 minutes after i unlock it the phone is hot, without any usage, temperature in sensors spiking around50s and 60s as mentioned above, msm more than 45

In my case I just cleared cache in recovery. It solved my problem.

Have you guys checked if pocket mode is enabled? That is the only explanation I can find right now for heating up when locked.

it is enabled and the issue is not when it's in pockt, when it's placed on table or any surface

Run 'top' command in a terminal app (I.e. Termux), when you get heat spikes, to see what process has high cpu utilization.

i quite can't understand this, but this was the scenario... the mobile stays cool , the moment i unlock it starts it heating..
and attached the temperatures too without any activities itself.

Does your big cluster go crazy? I've had that. I flashed back to 3.2.8 if the issue persisted (clean) it didn't so I flashed back cleanly and it was fine.

Well let's see where the heat comes from, what does your big cluster do? Does it run on high frequency for no reason? Then do what I suggested what I did, but dont do things blindly let's first diagnose if the big cluster is the issue.

Oh well, your phones CPU the SD820 has 4 cores, 2 big ones (peformance) 2 small ones (efficiency). Can you download CPU-Z from the PlayStore, and see if the big cluster (the bottom 2 cores) are running on a high frequency even if you do not touch the screen?

It's not a hardware issue . Because if something was damaged your phone would simply not function. I'm not sure how stock recovery updates your phone, but a hard reset (I think) should work and otherwise you can just reflash full zip of 3.2.8 here > http://downloads.oneplus.net/oneplus-3/oneplus_3_oxygenos_3.2.8/

im no expert on the topic but i i may just be able to use logic to logically explain this slight problemo of the sorts. Are you using 3g or 2g because using 3g in an area with poor coverage makes your phone work harder to retain a signal and such would result in drastic heat increases. another possible reason is that you may be holding your phone in the wrong position, i.e blocking the antenna which is situated on the lower backside of the phone. refer to your phone manual on how to hold your phone correctly to avoid blocking the path of your antenna.. hope this helps, a report-back would be most appreciable...
I use wifi but when I use 3g my phone get worm faster...first I notice that front side is worming(lower side of the screen). I hold phone normaly like everyone else in there hands...I know there are antena but there are oather phones... :/
Whats your range of temp. rise?

mine arent quite as bad since i avoid sense ROMS due to how heavy they make the system run. AOSP all the way. you'll never complain about such again

First let me say that I only use aosp roms, and I love it. But that's not entirely true. I'm running CM7.1, and while using the phone (3g) during charging at a low battery level I experience heat increases which in turn cause freezes.

Ok...but is there any one that can tell me whats normal temnperature when phone is at regular use for abouth 25 min.? Or monitor how fast grows at that time?I will aprishiate! And is yours phone display is hitting up(lower side)? Oh yea I think this happening after gingerbread update...

Well im sorry you dont know this, YOU SHOULD!!, but using your mobile extensively whilst charging isnt the best way of keeping your desire cool, lol excuse the pun. In fact, your basically not even charging your phone at all. All that you're succeeding in doing is putting a lot of strain on your hardware, especially your battery and motherboard. Im presuming your a repairs center frequenter. If you realise that such a pattern increases the likelihood of freezing, i know we all hate that , why keep repeating it? To sum this whole topic up, the more strain you put on your lovely mobile, the hotter its gonna get. If you cant take the heat, well then maybe a phone with the processing power of a late-model Pentium 3 and twice its memory truly isn't the right artillery for you. Perhaps a fruit such as a blackberry or an apple should be bestowed to your care... HIGHLY TECHNICAL CREATIONS (HTC) are for the logical ones amongst us
Are you serious? I know all that mate. Geez. Did your eyes not venture to the post I quoted? The one that states having aosp ROM installed stops the phone heating up with such behaviour. My point was to show that even with aosp it still heats up and freezes. You should really read what's being said, and process it correctly, before you write a stupid condescending post trying to look smart.
Try and make your fifth post a bit more intelligent.
Swyped from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
Here's a typical history log of rather heavy usage. If you download files, it can increase the temperature and make it very hot..

The battery temperature of even 38° doesn't feel hot to me, it's lukewarm.
Whats the program that you use for that statistic?
Battery monitor widget
Thanks man...actually you halp me a lot! I think my problem is battery couse its discharging fast and I read somewear that batery worming up when discharging fast and my battery drops 1% every 3 min just on screen on(nothing doing else) and when I playing games every 1 or 2 mins drops 1%...40 min. of cordy game 25% of battery
It's a known issue

It's a known issue with lots of HTC desire. My device had this defect too!
The motherboard is faulty and the phone must be replaced by HTC. I doubt your phone is out of warranty since Desire is a model less then 2 year old and (at least in europe) warranty must be 2 years by law.
you can find a lot of reports in different forums:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694114&page=2
http://androidforums.com/desire-support-troubleshooting/490782-desire-overheating-rebooting.html
Solution is sending to the customer service attaching a letter that says you require replacement of the phone. I did so and now I have a brand new phone that does not reboot anymore
mine is second hand desire and I dont have bill for warranty...

Comments on p6 huawei ascend after a day of use

Yesterday I bought a Huawei ascend p6 for my wife. Even when holding it in hand, I feel like its design. After a day of use, I feel quite disappointed in its performance. When running the game like candy crush, subway surf, ... I find it does not run smoothly, or say exactly shocked. I wondered if I run the game require higher configuration will how?
According to you, is caused by the configuration of the machine or the rom? Is there any way to solve this problem?
U can try to run it in performance mode.

The cpu and GPU locked in a certain frequency power can be achieved not so serious and fluent game approach.
The first machine to ROOT then RE Manager to set inside the file!
1. Open sys-devices-system-cpu-cpu0-cpufreq-cpuinfo_block_freq, use a text editor to open, modify the value of 600,000 or 800,000 or 700,000 are cpu frequency is locked, save and exit after completion of editing,
2. Locate scaling_cpu_lock_nun, a method using phase inside the 0 modified to 4. It is locked cpu cores. Save and exit editing can! In power management policy settings in a super-power standby.
GPU in accordance with slim post to unlock! But I set 480000 360000.
Heat is also not so great to play the game is very smooth! Power consumption is not serious enough for everyday use heat is also better!
I charge 100% after setting the screen brightness is not open to the minimum WIFI playing whitewater boats two effects 30 minutes of high power consumption 23% is power! But look at the beep beep miles 720 miles to see 24 minutes of animation power at about 7%! Several times hovering at about 7%.
After rebooting modify things will revert to re-edit

Hi there, im not very code technical, From what I can see, have you made the phone not get as hot and gave it better proformance, the only thing thats putting me off buying this phone is that even though it has a snapdragon S4 pro it isnt as good as the Nexus 4 which is cheaper and that it gets way to hot ( someone had a screen shot of the phone getting so hot that asked to close apps )
Many thanks

well... Based on what I know about this phone, the CPU is not a Snapdragon S4 pro but a K3V2E developed by Huawei itself. That might explains the performance issue. Huawei locked the CPU frequency and GPU frequency for power saving reasons, but it locked it too much.

No way! How could they lie? Do you think its a Cortex A7? I only ask because the battery life seems pretty good and as far as i know 1.5ghz is the max an A7 can go, also if the performance isnt great, that would be why?

Hi
Im satisfied with my new P6, but honestly the battery life is very bad. My phone 's been 5 hours on battery, and has 50%. I have disabled Google services, wifi, gps and cleaned background apps. I dont even keep my screen brightness high !
I also get sometimes mobile data lost, i've 3g/h on statusbar, but data is not moving. Going to airplane mode and back makes it work again. This happens few times a day.
I have B106, the build which came with the phone. Should i update to B107 or something else? Im in Finland with Elisa / Saunalahti network and i've heard about connection issues on B107. Is it still better than 106, or is there some other build that i should try?
And have you any info about coming versions from Huawei? Thanks alot
We have in Germany by default B104 and the B107 is much better ... at the moment I have a beta B111 on my phone and that is still better than B107 ... I think there will be better roms soon.
Hope that there will be custom rom possible soon, the test possibility is much better then ...
Find out whats causing the drain. Go to settings-battery(asetukset-akku) and see if there is a program misbehaving. Stopwatch prevents the phone from going to deep sleep and therefore drains lots of power even when the screens off, other programs might do it aswell.
If you get 4-7 hours of screen on time id say that its pretty normal, although i do not play any games that consume loads of power. And i think browsing with wifi consumes less power than mobile data.
Ill try to take some battery stats with syncs, gps and google now on. So youll have something to compare with.

Nexus 5X performance issues, compared to Nexus 5

Hello everyone.
Yesterday I bought a new Nexus 5X, been using Nexus 5 for the past year.
While setting it up, and later using it I started to notice small hangs in performance, simply it kinda wasn't as snappy as I expected coming from two year older phone, it's older brother.
I did Antutu and Geekbench tests, and both gave 5X a lower score, and here is geekbench comparison (to my N5 with ElementalX kernel at 2.5GHz): http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/compare/7158323?baseline=7158280
Simply, Nexus 5 blows it away in many aspects, including the average (total) score.
Are there any workarounds to this? Overall, I am satisfied, but not as much I hoped I would be.
What are your experiences?
Is it worth rooting and trying other kernels? I would like to keep it stock as much as I can.
Did you try updating the OS the MHC19J or newer? The encrypted user partition is significantly slower prior to MHC19J.
Did you try setting it up without migrating google account data (ie set it up as a new phone)?
Also try to keep 15% free space unused. On my past phones, EMMCs started performing very poorly when they got close to being full.

Thanks for your reply!
It's on MTC19V build, I updated it as soon as I started it first time.
Firstly I did set it up as a new phone and it was as slow, later I reset and migrated data from N5 because I wanted to save some time from setting everything up again.
More than 50% is free now, still haven't copied any music or movies since I have no USB-C to USB-A cable.

Either encrypt your N5, or decrypt your N5X.
Then you'll have true conditions to compare the two, since the forced encryption on 5X makes it laggy.

I could do it, but I still think this problem is caused by something else. I doubt all the people on YouTube for example, who compared them gone that far because that is not how it should be used...

also, be assured that the encryption barely makes a difference on the 5X at all. if you notice lagginess, it's more likely due to an app hogging resources.
I don't know for sure, those are all apps I had on my N5, minus few of them.
Will see how it goes in next few days...

Well the MTC19V build would have addressed any encryption vs decryption issues, so personally I wouldn't bother going through the effort to decrypt.
You aren't running out of space so it isn't an issue with EMMC wear-leveling not having enough space.
You installed as empty phone and it was still slow so it wasn't migration of data.
So I don't really have an explanation for why your phone feels slow. It doesn't feel slow to me, but perhaps this is a perception issue.
I would feel it was slow if it took a long time to load stuff or there was janking and stuttering performance. For my usage it is very smooth.

Either encrypt your N5, or decrypt your N5X.
Then you'll have true conditions to compare the two, since the forced encryption on 5X makes it laggy.

Do as the above poster suggested, decrypt. I agree that encryption on the 5x causes lag. I can compare apples to apples as much as possible, both my 5x and N5 are decrypted, both on Chroma and both using Franco kernels; both are very smooth in this set up.
So, this weird thing happen... I don't remember doing anything which could directly improve performance but this whole day the phone was simply flying, very fast!
Installed geekbench once again and did the test, and this happen: http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/7174524
Almost twice the single core score, and much higher multi core! How? I have no idea.
Still not rooted, which means absolutely stock and encrypted. Just weird if you ask me... I hope it stays like this!

Sometimes I've found during initial set up there can be maintenance operations going on in the background that aren't always obvious. Once it all settles down, the phone goes back to normal performance.

You'd be surprised. Google has all sorts of these delayed processing algorithms so everyone isn't doing the same thing at the same time.
I had 2 5x units side-by-side on Project Fi. One had a particular phone app version that was totally different release track from the other. I would log into Play and try to download the same version but the one phone was just stuck on its release track. Then 1 day later, that older release decides it is time to update Google Play Services and the Phone App, but the first phone doesn't see the Google Play Services update for 3 more days.
Then my phone starts feeling kind of slow and after some investigation, I notice it is downloading an OTA update, but I didn't see it at first because I got tired of seeing OTA notifications so I blocked notifications for Google Services Framework. I didn't consider this a general slowdown for the 5x because it really was doing something in the background, I just didn't realize it.
These might not be what your experiencing, but next time it slows down, run a process monitor, logcat or dmesg to see if that gives clues what might be going on.
After some more use I realized my problems were actually 100% caused by heat.
I guess CPU throttled down that much, it caused stutters and lower scores.
Realized that while playing a game, and after around 5 minutes of constant load, game suddenly slowed down and fps dropped at least in half.
After that I run geekbench, once again, while phone was still hot and as expected scores were painfully low.
Let the phone cool down for half an hour, without restart or swiping out recent apps, and ran benchmark again. This time, cold phone, and results were back to normal.
Repeated the test two more times, and results were exactly the same, higher the temperature, lower the performance, as expected.
The question is, could new kernel help in this case? I've used elementalX on the Nexus 5 and it had throttling settings. Also, I had no similar issues on N5, even though it was slightly overclocked.
Advices?

Temperatures went up to 60C degrees when I checked in CPU-Z after closing the game.
Not so sure about frequency since it dropped all the way down on first 4 cores because of low activity.

Looks like he's checking his CPU core temperatures, but at 43C I'm guessing you're talking about battery temperature.

Batterry drain by Android system and stand-by

Does anybody else noticed the huge amount of batterry drain that goes on all day long. I got this phone for about half a year and I think it's worse than before. I'm not the only one with this problem, most of my family got this phone as well and are having the same problem.
In the screenshots you can see how it drained. The screenshots were made after a day of work where I barely used my phone. It seems like it won't get in the Android sleep or Doze.

I tried several things as hard restting my device and I tried ForceDoze, but all of this didn't work. What can I do?
Stock or custom ROM ?
I got mine yesterday, flashed LineageOS right then..
And I do find battery life extremely poor compared to my older Moto G first gen.
But this might not mean anything for your case though.

It's just stock ROM. I considered flashing lineage os just for the battery. What do you think, is the bsttery life time better with lineage os?
And yes I got the first gen Moto G as well which had much better battery life.

As I didn't try stock rom for more than 5 minutes, I have no idea if it is better or worse on Lineage...
Only thing I can say is that I am very disappointed with the battery life, I could get 2 days on my old G where I can only get half one on this device with similar usage...
When I bought it (rushed buy as my G died), I didn't figure that doubling the screen res and and the CPU cores will cut by more than half the battery life with a only 35% bigger battery.
for your specific problem you might try to recalibrate your battery (cf : here)
Stock is not configured the best. It's running in performance mode and not running BigLittle configuration even tho we have slow cores and fast ones. Latest lineage has a BigLittle setup that will help a lot. Battery still not the best tho but way better for sure.

Are you sure msm8937 really supports big.LITTLE configuration? I can't find it anywhere :\
If I remember well (but I didn't follow SoC dev since msm8926), Qualcomm way of running CPUs was using MPdecision and such to shut down unneeded Cores and work on the minimum needed active cores, instead of having four or eight cores powered at anytime (and at blazing 900-1094MHz -_- )

Well it seems to be working OK. Kernel auditer is showing big.LITTLE. Updated 2 days ago self compiled lineageos. If you set powersave on big you get loads of deeps sleep on the cores. On stock there was never any deep sleep they was always running.
well, that's interesting,
I'll try to investigate a little [no pun intended] more, but at first sight, touching cpu0 freq affects the whole 4 core cluster (0 to 3)
Iv never had any problems with battery
As the screenshot shows - Iv been using my phone pretty much constantly the last 7 hours & Iv still got 7 hours left
So with constant Internet usage as well as spotify/pandora YouTube games etc I get at least 14 hours use out of this phone and normally longer - I only charge once a day
Iv always been using lineageos

could you please post a screenshot of cpuZ showing CPU freq when idle?
what I have here, and that looks quite strange to me :
Code:
cedric:/ # cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies
960000 1094400 1209600 1248000 1344000 1401000
Code:
cedric:/ # cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu4/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies
768000 902400 998400 1094400
which looks to me that the High perf Cores are 0 to 3 and low power ones 4 to 7...
but 4 to 7 seem stuck at 1094400Hz and 0 to 3 are 960000Hz when idle
I would expect that the High perf cores should turn off when idle, and that the low power ones go down to 768000... which would save quite some juice... isn't it?
I'm using LineageOS 14.1 by @wzedlare (lineage-14.1-20171018-UNOFFICIAL-cedric.zip)

You would need a custom kernel to play with the scailing & min frequency

I understand that the big are good to go with 960MHz as long as they should be off most of the time when idle,
But why the LITTLE cores are at 1GHz wen they could be much lower clocked when nothing is going on xD
from what I can see, it is possible to shutdown one or more core(s) manually :
Code:
echo 0 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu3/online
So I hope we can implement some hotplug driver to save some battery life.

cpuZ fails to detect the two different clusters and assumes core 1-7 are slave of core 0
If you are rooted, the app "Kernel Adiutor" can tell us more about this by looking at CPU menu, and governor for the LITTLE cluster
Or
Code:
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu4/cpufreq/scaling_governor

At least the governor is properly configured for the 4-7 cluster on stock ROM (that's something that I was starting to doubt about...)
If you ever install LinageOS in the next days (but I hope it will be fixed before) you may need to force the governor of the cluster 4-7 by 'echoing' it to core 4 (of use Kernel Adiutor for that matter)
did you search for any service that could be running in the background all time?

No I cannot point a finger to a specific app. I've done serveral factory resets, but no success with a clean reset.

Phone getting slow

I have had my OP3 for 2 years. I have noticed the battery life is much shorter, overall burn-in on the screen (screen is getting dim even on max brightness), and the overall performance is much slower than it was even a year ago. Am I the only one experiencing this? Is OnePlus doing similar to Apple where the CPU is throttling as the battery degrades?
Edit:
Using latest beta build, but the same issues persist regardless of using stock, beta, or custom roms. I am also rooted, but notice the slow speeds even with a fresh ROM reinstall with everything stock.
No OnePlus can't do what Apple did, we would notice in a second. You should try new kernels or go with stock if you aren't using stock already. Try different ROMs if you want to confirm your hardware condition. Other than that the decreasing speed is normal, the device is getting older and it is getting tired.
I've tried multiple different roms and kernels. The issue is close to the same across all ROMs. Just now opened a twitter notification and it took several seconds to open rather than instantly like you'd expect.
Was just wondering if it is worth a try with one of the $25 batteries on Amazon. Will likely just start looking to upgrade.
Highly doubt you have burn-in. Almost doesn't happen these days anymore unless you abuse your phone. Regarding that your phone is slow. Did you try a full reset yet? Have you done any tweaks or something? My phone is hitting the 2 year mark with only a new battery and camera (common focus problem). And it is still like it was at day 1.
It definitely has image burn in. If I put a full screen white image on the phone, it is all off-white except the middle part of the notification bar, I can even see burn in for the static icons like wifi, battery, LTE, etc...
I have done a full reset just a month ago, but didn't help. Even when completely stock including recovery then tried with a few different kernels. still very slow compared to new.
You did say you have a new battery, considering my battery life is crap right now, I may just give that a try. OEM parts are pretty cheap on witrigs.
I would definitely recommend using bluspark kernel on oxygen os. If you enable the fastlane feature and set both of the cores to 35 it will be blazing fast and no lag what so ever. Try that and let us know how your phone reacts.

I reset and reflashed OOS and installed bluspark. Also limited the apps I installed too. It seems to be a bit faster. Will report back if I get any slowing.
Still no issues. I was thinking and realized my issue. I had two separate profiles on my phone, a home profile and work profile. I assumed that the inactive profile automatically shutdown whenever switching like on a PC when you sign out of one account and into another. I am guessing this isn't the case with android. The inactive profile continued to run in the background causing my slowdown and battery drain issues.
Moving forward, multirom is probably the way to go for me if I decide to go back to having separate work and home work spaces.

There really is nothing you will be able to do about that. Those kind of games are really just pushing mobile hardware in directions that it just wasnt designed to go. Until we get a real cooling system (20 years or so before they shrink the liquid cooling small enough maybe) Gaming like that will always cause the device to heat up alot and lag. Its the nature of the beast.

No, Not even a new phone will really help. Besides the hardware in the 3 and 3t will still be able to handle anything Google tosses at it for a few more years yet. You hear it all over the place on every device. No device has a proper cooling setup for gaming of that nature. Even the S9 with Fortnite is getting hot after playing for a while.
This is a side effect of trying to game on something that was not made to game like that. Ill be honest. If you want to game like that save it for the PC until the hardware can support it. Other wise you will just have to deal with the heat and the lag.
