pixel xl laying flat - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

Does anyone notice if your pixel XL does not lay flat and rocks a little if you press on two opposing corners? Mine does ever so slightly. Only my OCD sees it.

Mine doesn't seem to do that.

#bendgate2.0

Actually, mine does.

Mine has done this since I got it. Have you used a case by chance? I think my Spigen Ultra Hybrid may have twisted it. The case was very tight to put on and take off. I've found I can straighten it out with a very light twist.

Strange, I have never dropped mine or SAT in it.

Slightly for mine and I honestly don't care. If it came that way so be it, if it is the result of being in my pocket without a case so be it . . if having it in a case would have prevented it I don't care . . bottom line for me is as long as the thing doesn't crack and the bend isn't noticeable in hand I could care less.
I don't foresee bending being an issue for me long term. I've carried my Note 4 in the same manner for 2 years without issue and the Pixel XL seems to be more rigid in construction than that phone was.

Mine does not. Just checked.

Posted about this issue. I've sat on it. that was my reason that my phone bent ever so slightly.

Scratch help

Just got this phone a couple days ago. Sold but s4. This phone is so much better seriously. However I noticed there's a couple very small scratches right on that shiny bezel next to where you plug it in to change. Is that shiny part aluminum? I'd like to find a way to remove the scratch. Its very small and I'm unable to feel it with my fingernail. I'm just really ocd.

Nope, not the white part. It's the aluminum part. It's where the aluminum attaches to the white plastic part. On the very edge of the bezel there's a couple small scratches. I can feel one with my fingernail.

You have 14 days, return the phone. They will usually replace it as DOA. You'll be fine.. a few stores were willing to replace mine for gaps in the chassis.

I was considering it but the scratches are so damn small. I do have a small hairline gap at the top near the power button but from what I've read most do... And mines extremely small. Idk what to do.

Ha.. let me tell you about that gap.. I still have my original phone. I've been to 3 corporate stores and looked at literally 17 new phones and they all had it.. mine was actually smaller than what I saw out there.. the only gapless phone I saw was 1 demo model at one of the corporate stores.
They usually wont fight you for a return on something even as minor as a scratch you can feel. Just make sure you go to a corporate store, not a satellite private owned store.

You don't have to even lie, just tell them you've been waiting for this phone on Verizon for 3 months now and since it's finally here you want a perfect phone. At least that's what I said 3 times at 3 diff stores and all 3 managers approved replacement. And yes, I would have it replaced for that, hopefully they wont blame you though. The gap thing is a more obvious factory defect (if not normal at this point).
Let them be the ones to lie about the DOA if the manager agrees to replace the phone for ya.

I'm going to lie anyway just to make sure they don't deny replacing it. I'm not saying anything about the scratches and they won't notice them. How did you get the phone replaced so many times at different stores? They told me I can only replace it one time and that they'd charge me like $30. I always tell them that I want to check the phone for physical defects before I buy it and they always look at me strange and make me feel like an idiot or something.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Tapatalk 2
I mean I'm going to go in there tomorrow and tell them this thing has restarted itself 4x right when I was in the middle of doing stuff and that I did a factory reset and the same thing is happening. Then when they say ok they will replace it since it's only been like 3 days I'm going to say that the build quality on this phone is perfect(obvious lie) and I want to make sure that the replacement one you're giving me doesn't have any of the known defective gaps or scratches. What do I do if they hand me the replacement one and I notice a scratch or gap? Just say Um no I don't want this one and they bring another out until I'm satisfied?

and we wonder why we spend so much on cellphone plans...
Really, those scratches are not noticeable for most people. Lets remember these things are made on an assembly line as fast as possible and there is never going to be "the perfect" anything.
The gap I can kind of understand because it could cause water damage if water gets splashed right there, but a very small cosmetic flaw, that's not on the screen, is something I wouldn't even notice.

Keyword is OCD..
Something else is happening that's weird. A few times a day I'll get the standalone gps message pop-up... I'll just be on the phone watching a movie or something and it will pop up like I tried to turn the gps on or something when I haven't.

Wish someone could just to me how to polish those tiny scratches out.. I mean it's aluminum.. Really don't feel like returning the phone but whatever.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Tapatalk 2
So I went into the Verizon store and no joke I had him pull out 5 different ones and only one of them had absolutely 0 gap however it had a small chip in the aluminum. Every single one had small scratches in the same area as mine. Mine actually looked better than most of them. The average person wouldn't notice any of this but I do. For now I'm just keeping mine.. I put a case on it anyway.

That's painted metal, not plastic. None of the body is plastic. Taken from CNET review: "HTC also makes a big deal about the One's all-aluminum chassis, describing it as using a zero-gap unibody design. Indeed, available in black and silver, the handset feels sturdy, with reassuring heft, and its smooth, metallic skin exudes high-end craftsmanship. HTC also took pains to point out that while the thin, white trim encircling the silver model I manhandled appears to be plastic, it is, in fact, metal."
You can also tell this by looking very closely at the edge of the white part and you'll see there's not a seam.

That video only showed the back of the phone being milled. There was only 1 shot of the sides on it, and it totally looks like plastic.
Also, directly from the iFixit teardown:
Our diligent spudgering appears to have permanently mangled the plastic bezel surrounding the aluminum case.

screen creak...

My nexus 7 (2013) is a few weeks old now and ever other tap on the screen seems to make this creaking noise like the screen is moving. And in the top left corner the screen seems loose. Will a full body case stop this? And yes, this is a 2013 model, I originally returned my old nexus 7 2012 model for an iPad mini because the screen was coming off. I am horrified that this may be the case on this newer model... If anyone has experienced this I would appreciate your feedback. Also, I have realised that when I pick it up off my table the back case creaks as well. It seems I have a dud tablet I presume
Mine was great out of the box, now it creaks very loudly on the top left, top right is starting to develop a creak also. Case doesn't help. I think you'd need to disassemble and add adhesive under the screen or something lol

Up to u I guess, I just use the nexus upside down, so the creaky corner is on the bottom right where I'd never touch it.
I use gravity box and xposed framework to enable the screen rotation.
mine creaks at the bottom around the usb port. this with the dodgy touch screen means i might return it.
Mine started to creak also... I guess that's what you get for paying under $300 for a tablet with nice specs - - they make it up with shoddy build quality.

Apart from a bit of dust under the screen and a few dead pixels and the creak 's fine. So I'll live with it

Check the top right of your XL

Everyone,
Check the top right corner of your Pixel XL. Look and see if there is a tiny separation happening at the top right corner where it meets the top/side. I happened to notice on mine. It is very small but it's there. It's not like that on the left side. I went up to the Verizon store to possibly swap it out but while I was waiting for a representative I looked at their floor models and noticed the same separation on all of their models. It seems as if there was an adhesive used to fuse the phones together that did not stick on that side. I was actually able to press down on the corner and it would move so I know it is an actual separation. I'm curious to see if anyone else has noticed this?
Front or back? Either way there is no separation on mine on either side.

No issues over here. Everything is sealed. Did you drop it or hit it on something by accident or has it been around any heat? If not could be a defective unit.

Nope. Haven't dropped it or anything. Hehe I haven't had it long enough for that yet! Like I said before though all the verizon floor models had this same little separation. It probably isn't a big deal but I was just curious to see if anyone else had it. I'm have a Verizon model if that makes any difference.

Maybe can you post a picture?
I HAVE deportation on the back, and it broke pressing the headset to my ear to hear my father better today...... I got the insurance but planned on returning it in 14 days because I have a Google over on the way.... Luckily Google said he will talk to Verizon for me and hook a brother up. This whole pixel thing is a disaster..... Phone is mint besides that minor stress fracture/shatter... FML shoulda just listened to the wife use a flip phone.
no, you are not crazy.
I also got it from google store and have tiny gap between the aluminium case and the front glass. It's very little, but it is there. I don't have another camera here right now, but when I'm home I'll try to take a shot of it.
I have the silver version and I guess with it you can see the gap better than with other color versions.
Anyway, luckily my case covers the gap, else I couldn't unsee it too.

How does the Pixel XL's body hold up to use?

I read that the metal chips or wears off. I have the black version. My Nexus 6P had issues with the volume rocker and buttons deforming, something I noticed randomly then after it fell twice. The metal on the back shows sign of wearing exposing a silver finish.
Just curious how the Pixel XL will hold up to a years use.
The black chips away slightly at the edges, but it hasn't spread beyond that on mine.
The white version does not have this issue, since it is the same color as the underlying metal.

I really love this phone. However, this is the second one because of those issues. Google honered the replacement device and I bought an Otter Box. It's a good phone but for the price it should have been made of Kevlar. I'd wait until number 2 rolls and see what these guys put it through and get that one. Just a suggestion. If you decide not to wait. Buy a case. Hope that helps. Peace Out

Question Question about unfolding completely flat

Hi!
I have the phone for about a month, it works perfectly and I love it. But in the first few weeks, whenever I unfolded the phone it snapped right to a 180 angle, but in the last few days it seems like there's sometimes a missing few degrees before it's completely flat.
If I unfold it a bit more with a little bit of force (but not much at all) it unfolds completely flat again. Is that normal? Should I show it to Samsung?
Dust.

It could possibly be the bristles inside the hinge that keeps dust from getting inside the device. If those bristles come loose (it's a strip that's apparently glued on across the entire length of the phone inside the hinge) they could possibly hinder the phone from opening all the way flat. That's a wild guess but I read somewhere about the bristles coming loose and creating problems. Anyway, you probably should make Samsung or your carrier (if you bought the device through a carrier) aware of it. The hinge is under warranty so if it fails, Samsung should fix or replace it for free or your carrier can issue you a warranty replacement.

Me too, out of the box I needed to push a little to get it perfectly flat. It has improved slightly after a few weeks but I still need to do it. My Z Fold 3 snapped open flat by itself. It annoys me quite a bit.

I never had the previous Folds to compare but the geared hinge sounds better quality to me. However, I think that as long as our phones snap shut properly and need a bit of force to open then all is well.
Basically once I pull mine open for the rest of the way I'm doing all the work to get it to open fully. I don't feel any kind of 'spring action' assisting me.
This is normal. My Fold 4 has done this since new. It opens like normal to like 175 degrees then the remaining 5 is a bit loose/soft. If I push further to 180 and let go it will kinda push itself back to 175. Not a big deal to me. I feel like the fewer degrees the glass bends the less likely the crease will crack
I had this problem with my Fold 1 and Fold 2. A couple of months after purchase I noticed the phone wouldn't open all the way. Its dust! Push a sticky tape into the hinge and run it along the edge on both sides. It is a tedious process but it should help.
What clothes are you Wear with a lot of dust?
Ok but seriously I have fold 2 above 1,5 years, carry in pocket of trousers and I don't have aby problems with full fold
I had a Fold 2 and Fold 3(x2). Also I had a Fold 4 in burgundy. All of them was completely 180 flat. Now I have a Black 1 Tb fold 4 and have the same "Non flat" issue. For complete flat opening I must push the sides. But it is so since day 1 out of the box. I think it depends on how the screen protector is glued and stretched.
