I thought Power button design was a clever design by Sony when I saw it in pictures. When I got ZL I thought it was very nice but over time I started to feel it is getting harsh on fingertips. Now I am using upper middle area of thumb to press it as it hurts finger because of sharp edges and the 'clicky' sound it only getting louder. I recently got Xperia Tablet Z and I am now of the opinion that Sony overdid the design of power button.
I think it would have been better if it had spherical design instead of cylindrical so it's not harsh on finger. Also, it would have been better if it didn't pop up so much out. Now, the power button even makes a more 'click' sound than it did in the beginning which makes me feel it will get worse over time. I find the design of the power button on HTC is very nice and smooth except it feels little too small and not comfortable to reach on top.
I hope to see a nice rounded design with all buttons blended into the surface of the phone.
I like it as it is. Personal preferences vary.

I think it's a poor design. Mine has actually popped off a few times. I also wear a horizontal belt case when at work and can't guess how many times I've turned the screen on accidentally. The placement is ok but I feel it should be flush with the surface.

I find it to be perfect for me, to each their own. I hated the flush button design on the HTC 8X/One. Also this power button has the perfect amount of force and feedback. You know you pressed it, which is important.
I have a few days with mi Xperia ZL, but so far I find the power button quite comfortable, and unlike my Samsung Galaxy S3, the XZL don't turn on the screen by accident as much as the SGS3 ... maybe time will change my mind, but right now i'm quite happy with my Xperia ZL

Now have lost the power button. Need a pin to turn on screen. Going back to Sony under warranty. Be careful with this marketing gimmick.

Wierd, my power button does not do any sounds. Also I dont find it harsh on fingers. Try power button on, like, HTC One, now that harsh and difficult to press due to being flush (you have to squeeze it in with edge of your finger every time).
I got Xperia to very big extent exactly because of power button, and I think its very clever design, its very comfortable for me. Buttons located on top or closer to top are very difficult to press with one hand, making you prone to drop the phone. Buttons located on very bottom edge of big screen phones (like S4) are no better.
Granted, I see how it will require special case/bumper design because of this, but I just carry it in my pocket so don't care about it really.
Edit: sorry, just found that power button does inteed make "click" sound, but its extremely quiet. Not sure if it was better or worse before, as I never noticed it.
It's completely normal that power buttons makes a quiet "click" sound ! We are talking about physical button I would really like to meet the person "who has pain" (harsh on fingertips) because of power button on ZL Unbelievable No offence!
I love the power button on the Z and the one on the SP is even better as it protrudes a bit more. I think it adds a touch of uniqueness to the range.
I like it, nice contrast to the body and other buttons. Yes, it sticks out, which will be an issue for anyone not using a case. It's very unobtrusive with a case .. at least with my Incipio Feather. Also, it's fun to watch people try and find the button the first time or ten
had to exchange mine for a new one because the power button was loose and did not register half of the clicks. the new one has worked fine so far (a month and a half)
I like the power button. It could sit a touch higher, but other than that it's great.

Sony responded by telling me the device has "physical damage". No warranty replacement. $600 for a phone I used three months. Miss my ZL but I have no choice but to defect. In my opinion, a totally unacceptable response from Sony. The phone is like new with no power button. Needless to say, I'm disappointed and surprised.

Personally I like the power button,it's easy to find without looking at the phone and the tactile feedback is great. It also looks quite nice. I'd rate this the same or slightly below the Nexus 4's power button.
Please, no "that's what she said" jokes. Rate this thread to express how you think the LG G5 feels in-hand. A higher rating indicates that it's comfortable to hold for long periods of time, even in one hand. Resist the urge to say "TWSS" just now. Seriously.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Not used to the Volume Buttons
I sometimes hit the volume buttons when I don't mean to. Probably because I am used to having them on the back instead of the side.
Phone feels GREAT in hand!
Coupled with a Goospery TPU case...it's the PERFECT size, and protected decently! I'd choose this size phone over my Note 3!!!

I think the volume on the side is better than the back one for the following reason. When you are in sitting in a table studying and hearing music, if you want to increase or decrease the volume, you dont have to pick up the phone just because the buttons are in the back. Also, when you are driving if you are using a gps, it is more useful to have them on the side if you are constantly increasing and decreasing the volume. (Just an opinion)

I like buttons on back way better. You can always adjust volume on screen for the rare times you have it flat on a table, and to be honest you really can't use side buttons 1 handed without picking it up, or bracing it against something, or covering screen with hand anyways.

There you go lol. That's why there are a wide variety of colors. (Figurativerly speaking though) This one just happened to be black instead of blue (Again, figuratively speaking). But you can adjust the volume with one hand without the need of the other or picking up the device. Or am i just happen to be so skilled to do it? hahaha

Totally agree. About the only time I'd prefer them on the back is when I'm holding it in both hands. I generally find myself holding it in my right hand only though and it feels great, I can reach almost all of the screen without overreaching even with my bumper on. I prefer the S7 edge in this respect but the G5 still scores highly.

I'm not fond of the side volume buttons.. But regarding the awful implementation of these keys on the G5, it is totally solved by a case.
I would prefer the volume rocker to be on the right hand side of the phone, or even better, at the back. Besides that, it fits like a glove

I agree. While I would have preferred the volume buttons were on the right side, overall, it's a very comfortable phone. Especially considering how wide it is.
The only other issue that I have with it is that I really like and am getting so used to the power button being on the back of the phone. Whenever I have to use my wife's phone, I start fishing in the back of the phone with my finger standing there confused wondering why I can't find the power button on her S6. lol

My thoughts on the G5:
It's top heavy because of the light plastic at the bottom. I feel like its going to fall out of my hand at the top because the weight is not equally distributed. It feels nice in the hand outside of that.
The volume rocker is all wrong. They need to put it back on the rear of the phone. Coming from the G2 and G3, I hate having the volume rocker on the left side as I keep pressing the power button trying to change the volume. It also makes taking a screenshot really awkward and hard to do. At the very least put it on the right side of the phone. The only benefit I see to having it on the left side of the phone is that you can still use your thumb to take a photo yourself or a group using the rear camera. However; this could easily be accomplished on the right side of the phone with your index finger.
The headphone port needs to be moved back to the bottom of phone. Not a fan of it at the top.
The slight curve at the top of the phone is a neat touch; however my tempered glass screen protector has not showed up to see how well that will fit.
I haven't noticed the lip where the bottom connects to the phone's body as mentioned in a lot of the reviews.
Lg needs to start supplying 6' charging cords. The G5 cable is even smaller than the G2 - G4's cables.
Side note: Stupid Verizon removed the Smart Settings / My Place from their version and I wish they would leave the LG browser and Smartworld app installed.
Hello all. 3 days ago, i got an Nexus 5x to replace my 5. I love the phone, and for the price I think I've made the right choice. The only thing that is bothering me is that somethimes, my Power/Volume buttons are weak/mushy and I only can say that I clicked them because the screen turns on/off or the volume changes.
My question is if this behaviour is normal, or my equipment is with some kind of problem. How is yours?
Thanks!!

I've had access to a few Nexus 5x. Some have mushy buttons, some don't. My current one has pretty good tactile click feedback. I found the power button has more incidents of being mushy than the volume +/-. I think in most cases it doesn't really make a difference and if you use the fingerprint scanner to turn on, it cuts down in half the number of uses the power button gets.

So, in your opinion, it's not worthing send my nexus to RMA? If there is a high chance of the new one also have the mushy buttons, I would prefer staying with this. At least the only bad aspect of this nexus is the buttons (which are working just fine now)

I obviously don't have long term experience with the 5x buttons, but on the Nexus 7 2013 they also had some units with mushy buttons (as well as some with good tactile feedback). Despite thinking the mushy buttons would not be as good for longevity, they still work fine.
I can't say for sure in your case, but I probably wouldn't bother replacing unless you have some other problem you also wanted to address.
Then again, I'm not you and the power/volume button might be something you interact with every day and these minor annoyances can build up.

Thanks sfhub. I will return it because i already have asked for it and because not only the buttons are mushy, but also the power button is too loose for my taste (the other 5X that I know have, at least, a firm power button). But if the newer unit come with the same mushy buttons, I probably will just accept it.
Thanks!
Hi guys,
I'm contemplating on the returning OP3 which I've bought recently. I'm not sure if it's normal as there's a decent play in volume rocker. As I bought it from HK bought company, it's going to be tricky returning items as I live in Australia. Please refer to attached YouTube video and let us know what you think? https://youtu.be/nXR1WbS4zQI
Ps: For some reason, I can't seem to make the video work. You may have to do good ol copy and paste to view. Thanks
Mine volume rocker is also loose...I think its normal
Mine also has a bit of wiggle If you rock it back and forth, not that it's worth replacing for though. If your button is responsive, tactile and isn't giving you any issues why bother? Seems really nitpicky.
Yes, it has some lateral wobble, but I wouldn't consider this an issue, you don't apply forces in that direction in normal use anyways. The buttons are still nice tactile and clicky.

Its normal. I also have the same situation. Then i made a contact with a one plus tech guy. He said that if it is functioning then it is normal. The buttons are always incorporated into the body after it is manufactured and there is a big chance of dimensional changes and uniqueness with the buttom and the body.
such a pointless thing to send a phone back for.
If the buttons are still working then why does it matter?
Buttons become loose over time, simple as. Join the One Plus 3 Community forums if you want to complain about everything. (Those forums are horrendous)
Just got the 6 pro today..anyone notice their power button is a bit less clicky than the volume rockers?
And if you press the power button at the very edge, you get almost no audible click. Have to click it directly down at the middle.
The volume buttons you can click at the very edge and still get an audible click.
Shrugs, not a huge deal, especially with the current shortages, just wanted to see if it was just me who had it.
Yes, both my volume buttons are louder than my power button. Not an issue at all as all feel good.
yeah I gotta press harder on power then volume

Okay cool, yeah, just wanted to make sure it wasn't a defective device and I needed to RMA. WIth the current shortages..no clue how long a RMA would take tbh..
Old thread, but I bought two phones and both have identical power buttons; where the top and bottom edge of the buttons push in but do not engage/click the button.
Essentially you need to press directly in the middle of the button for it to engage.
I assume this is just how the button was designed. I highly doubt I got 2 phones with an issue. Also others seem to suggest this is how the button functions.
After trying Power, Volume Up, and Volume Down several times, they all feel exactly the same (clicky) to me. At least through my OtterBox Defender case.
All buttons should feel good with a wide sweet spot and uniform, positive action.
Poor design, poor quality and noticeable deviations are not what you pay the big bucks for in a flagship phone.
Yes, well... the Titanic was the flagship of the White Star Line.
