Why put the powerbutton the other side of the volume

This is crazyyyy! Why did they put the power button on the other side of the volume button? I'm finding myself constantly turning the volume down when i try and turn the screen of because your hand naturally positions your fingers there to get some leverage!
Would have been much better along the top edge IMO

Agree should have put it on top like the nexus one and desire

The phone is too long to have the power button on top. It's also too thin at the top to have a button there, but the power button location is mostly because of the phone's size.

I did this once now I dint its all about how you hold the phone and now I don't press any volume keys when hitting the power button

You'll get used to it. It's not better or worse than a button on the top, just different, especially when you come from another phone. Give it a week or two and this becomes a none-issue.

I have to agree that the current location is plain stupid.
The number of times I've hit it when either using the volume buttons or holding my phone playing a game is too many to count over the last week.
Poor industrial design that one.

lol coming from an iphone , this is really the only thing that bothers me.

I actually prefer it to the unthought out position that HTC choose for their massive smartphones ... you'll get used to it and you'll love it

Who/what is crazy here?? Come on, grow up! Life is full of changes and opportunities. If you're this upset about a powerbutton on a different place than you are used to, then go live in a cave and don't move.

yeah i still go for the home button like on my iPhone, but i've only had my Nexus 4 days..

I like the power button being on the side much better. Especially for these bigger devices. It would be awkward to unlock with one hand if it was on top. I don't know maybe I'm a bit biased because I have owned the gs1 and gs2. Either way I have never had an issue with the button placement before.

I like it where it is, on the side. Previously I have had some HTC phones, so I've experienced both. In my opinion, it's way easier and faster to turn the screen on/off. And I've never had a problem with it.

Same with me. I've also had 2 previous HTC devices, but I prefer the power button on the side now.
The thing that really tripped me up is the volume being on the opposite side. That messed me up more than the power button location.

Just a guess, but I'm guessing it has something to do with the screenshot feature. Having buttons on the opposite sides allows you to just squeeze the phone in the position you're probably already holding it in.

The screenshot feature came long after the side button placement on phones. The button combination for it was likely created for the reason you said though. Well that and they're pretty limited in what combinations they can do when there aren't many buttons.

Just got my S III, some questions and comments

I've been holding off buying the S III for some time in hopes of something better, but nothing has come along so I finally bit the bullet. I bought a new white one off ebay for $450, which is on the cheaper side. It came with a rather deep scratch on the bottom right on the chrome, but frankly its hard to notice and the rest of the phone seems to work fine. Wanted to ask a few questions and make a few comments.
1. Screen is the best AMOLED screen period. The lack of reflection and infinite viewing angles puts it head and shoulders above all phone IPS screens I've used. Also on a completely different level to the beta AMOLED screens Samsung was churning out. None of the pixelation, dithering, artifacts, lines, blotches, and crap from the S II or the Note. It doesn't turn to crap when I dim the screen, and looks very nice and even like that. The saturation has been toned down as well and looks better. However, I wish the greens were not so BLUE and the skin tones were less ghastly red/yellow/orange.
2. My volume keys are firm and clicky, but my power button is kind of loose. Will it deteriorate over time?
3. The battery cover is still a horrible design. My left side snaps into place completely, but there is a gap that you can put a fingernail and also feel the seam and slight hump since its not flush. This is normal for Samsung right? My Note also had a battery cover problem. It would ot snap in, and I had to jam it in at a very sharp angle and bend the cover back heavily. At least that was flush. This one is not. Also noticed looseness on the top corners with the S3, especially when you move the phone around or hold it in landscape and either push the corners a bit or hold onto them. I think this is endemic to the S3 since all the display phones at my local store had the same problem, along with the entire cover being taped up since they were coming off of course.
4. The home button is hard to press. I also noticed this on the demo models. Why couldn't it be more like the iPhone's button? The amount of force required to push it, its location at the very end of the phone, and the lightweight nature of the phone means I have to hold the phone firmly down or the entire thing just might bounce out of my hand. I usually have to hold the bottom underneath the button and pinch down with my thumb. That's not very satisfying either, since I am also pushing up into a looser part of the back cover and it flexes a bit, especially since there's that hole where the microUSB plugs into. I try to avoid using the home button and use back all the way if possible.
5. The phone is fast, but not blazingly fast or smooth. It's better than my old One X. Still far from the smoothness of a Windows Phone device. Hopefully Jelly Bean will help a lot.
6. They need to disable the capacitive keys during camera mode. I always end up pushing one or both of them and exiting the camera or getting edit popups. Same problem I had on the Note.
7. Phone looks and feels a million times better without the rim sticking out above the glass surface. It's more prone to damage, but I'll take the look and unimpeded finger swiips any day.
8. The Note had a much much better speaker. The S3 sounds like an S2 without the back cover helping muffle it.

1. There is a setting in display settings to adj screen tone. See if that helps.
2. Some have reported this, but mine is fine. Not loose at all.
3. The battery cover while flimsy i agree, should snap on with ease. No raised or humped section, no gap for a fingernail... almost sounds like yours took a nasty fall or other impact... it should fit just fine with no blemishes.
4. Home isnt hard to push. Agree though that it couldve been implemented much better.
5. Imho, this thing screams. Never had any problems with lag or not being smooth and speedy. Top of the line if you ask me.
8. Speakers fine for me, for what it is. I never expect the external speaker to be super high quality.

On the screen issue, have you gone out to broad daylight and trying to see the screen? Its tough. I still prefer IPS screens.
The home button is hard to press. Being accustomed to only capacitive buttons, the home button is tough to press. Even more so with my ballistics case.
The back is plastics but it gets the job done
The power button is sturdy and fine on my end
I agree with the camera button.
I also got mine from eBay about a month ago for 469 and although it was used, it was kept and very good condition. All I have is a small line on the gray part of the phone by the volume button that only extends about 2 mm. Sometimes I forget its there. The screen is my biggest letdown. Coming from 2 LG devices, the IPS screen is the best screens in my opinion. Natural colors, awesome brightness. This one is good I enjoy it but its not great.

I played with an Optimus G in-store, basically a Nexus 4. Did not like it AT ALL. The glass was icky. Was not impressed by the display. It was washed out looking. This is in comparison to the One X and iPhone, not just AMOLED.
IPS is better outdoors and at max brightness. However, indoors at low brightness the contrast looks way better on the AMOLED screen of the GS3.
Oh man the 5" HTC Droid DNA is coming out. If it can be unlocked for GSM networks, I'm itching the jump again...haha I had the Note two months ago too.
I'm getting buyers remorse from the build quality. Just holding or moving the phone around and taking it out of my pocket, there's always a creak or a flex from the loose back cover. The phone is kinda slippery and clammy, not much to hold on to, and the jiggly power button. I said I would never buy another Samsung phone because of build, but here I am again...a sucker for the screen!

3. My battery cover is perfectly flush. I have pulled it off to change sd cards and once when initially rooting.. I simply put it in place and smoothly press the edges while moving around the whole phone.. all click in, flush
5. check to see if Power saving mode is on, and if cpu saving is on in power saving ... if it is, chances are your phone is only hitting 1GHz
when power saving is off (via the handy toggle in the notification shade dropdown), phone is allowed to hit full 1.5 GHz
another reason for some speed loss is the samsung touchwiz environment.. beautiful, but a bit heavy
jellybean from a google/nexus base IS faster, but mainly cuz it is more bare

Xperia Z's Power button thoughts (harsh?)

I thought Power button design was a clever design by Sony when I saw it in pictures. When I got ZL I thought it was very nice but over time I started to feel it is getting harsh on fingertips. Now I am using upper middle area of thumb to press it as it hurts finger because of sharp edges and the 'clicky' sound it only getting louder. I recently got Xperia Tablet Z and I am now of the opinion that Sony overdid the design of power button.
I think it would have been better if it had spherical design instead of cylindrical so it's not harsh on finger. Also, it would have been better if it didn't pop up so much out. Now, the power button even makes a more 'click' sound than it did in the beginning which makes me feel it will get worse over time. I find the design of the power button on HTC is very nice and smooth except it feels little too small and not comfortable to reach on top.
I hope to see a nice rounded design with all buttons blended into the surface of the phone.

I like it as it is. Personal preferences vary.

I think it's a poor design. Mine has actually popped off a few times. I also wear a horizontal belt case when at work and can't guess how many times I've turned the screen on accidentally. The placement is ok but I feel it should be flush with the surface.

I find it to be perfect for me, to each their own. I hated the flush button design on the HTC 8X/One. Also this power button has the perfect amount of force and feedback. You know you pressed it, which is important.

I have a few days with mi Xperia ZL, but so far I find the power button quite comfortable, and unlike my Samsung Galaxy S3, the XZL don't turn on the screen by accident as much as the SGS3 ... maybe time will change my mind, but right now i'm quite happy with my Xperia ZL

Now have lost the power button. Need a pin to turn on screen. Going back to Sony under warranty. Be careful with this marketing gimmick.

Wierd, my power button does not do any sounds. Also I dont find it harsh on fingers. Try power button on, like, HTC One, now that harsh and difficult to press due to being flush (you have to squeeze it in with edge of your finger every time).
I got Xperia to very big extent exactly because of power button, and I think its very clever design, its very comfortable for me. Buttons located on top or closer to top are very difficult to press with one hand, making you prone to drop the phone. Buttons located on very bottom edge of big screen phones (like S4) are no better.
Granted, I see how it will require special case/bumper design because of this, but I just carry it in my pocket so don't care about it really.
Edit: sorry, just found that power button does inteed make "click" sound, but its extremely quiet. Not sure if it was better or worse before, as I never noticed it.

It's completely normal that power buttons makes a quiet "click" sound ! We are talking about physical button I would really like to meet the person "who has pain" (harsh on fingertips) because of power button on ZL Unbelievable No offence!

I love the power button on the Z and the one on the SP is even better as it protrudes a bit more. I think it adds a touch of uniqueness to the range.

I like it, nice contrast to the body and other buttons. Yes, it sticks out, which will be an issue for anyone not using a case. It's very unobtrusive with a case .. at least with my Incipio Feather. Also, it's fun to watch people try and find the button the first time or ten

had to exchange mine for a new one because the power button was loose and did not register half of the clicks. the new one has worked fine so far (a month and a half)

I like the power button. It could sit a touch higher, but other than that it's great.

Sony responded by telling me the device has "physical damage". No warranty replacement. $600 for a phone I used three months. Miss my ZL but I have no choice but to defect. In my opinion, a totally unacceptable response from Sony. The phone is like new with no power button. Needless to say, I'm disappointed and surprised.

Personally I like the power button,it's easy to find without looking at the phone and the tactile feedback is great. It also looks quite nice. I'd rate this the same or slightly below the Nexus 4's power button.

[Q] Holding note 10.1 2014 in portrait mode

How is it possible to hold this tab in portrait mode with those stupid hardware buttons located at where my left had is supposed to grip the tab?
I think this will be a turnoff for people who intend to use the tablet mainly for reading and annotating textbook, unless there is an option to disable hardware buttons while in portrait mode or completely disable them and replace them with software buttons with orientation.

The alternative will be holding the tablet upside down with the left hand gripping the camera

It seems like people are making a bigger issue out of this than it actually is. The long side is around 10 inches long and the buttons might take up three. I'm sure you'll be able to handle it without accidental button presses. In my opinion, having the menu button just below my thumb is a welcome feature.

Since the buttons are on the long side, that is the default way of holding it. Now the question is that if you are holding it with left hand, why you don't simply rotate it to other direction?

Being a right handed person i hold the tab by the left hand and write/turn pages by the right.
I'm not sure if holding the tab by the camera is a wise idea, for the risk of accidentally touching the camera lens.

It may be only me but I'm more comfortable holding the tab from the middle of the left side.

Well I don't see why touch the lens is that bad thing, as it usually is the part of phone, for exsample, which is touching table etc. And any fingerprints can be easily wiped from the lens. But that is just me.
ps. I don't understand using covers with phones either, with tablet they are more useful.

I don't know why the hell they had to put a hardware button on it. Hardware buttons on tablets are stupid.

I'll probably rotate it and hold it by the camera lens. It's not like I'll ever use a gigantic tablet to take a picture anyway. That's why I'm getting my Note 3, so I can take pictures with a gigantic phone.

For me phone cover is more important since I drop it frequently unlike the tab

You are right about the back camera but the front one i use frequently for video calls.

Looks like i'm the only one that actually likes the idea of a hard button! it's an instant access to home, not being able to do this on a nexus annoys me, but i don't see why this should be a deal breaker really.

Say what you will but I think an inch bezel around the whole tablet is necessary, how else you plan on holding the thing if there is no room for your thumb. I could care less about what any isheep has to say about my tablet.

I was holding of for years until there was one like this one. why dont you guys that want a thick bezel get one of the other dozen tablets that have the design you want. they have been out for years.

While im not crazy about the idea I do have a Note 2 and already i'm use to them being there.
Actually I can see some benefits....
I'm sure you can disable the buttons or a program will come out that can.
In fact here is a rough draft on how to hack them...

The reason why they have physical buttons is because since 4.2 and up, the tablet UI became the phone UI. So you no longer had a bar at the bottom, one side with cappy buttons and the other with the notification drawer.
Instead you have a status bar like on phones AND a bar at the bottom for only three buttons. Less screen estate, especially considering that Samsung would use the Home, Back and Menu buttons in capacitive form. That takes away quite a bit of screen space and you can see it happening especially in videos. To get what I mean, take a look at the 4.2.2 firmware for the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. More screen is lost because the design guidelines have changed.
What Samsung's done is take away the bottom bar and used the physical buttons instead. Not the best solution but it allows for more screen space. On the Note, it'd be a bit of a shame to have about a centimetre thick part of that awesome screen taken up by three buttons.

I agree with this. Though I am not a huge fan of the physical buttons I really like that it has the extra screen real-estate.

someone will mod it soon. i've actually gotten used to the buttons on my gn8. the only time hate em is when gaming. the rom I use has a mod to turn them off and only make them useable via spen. you'll get used to it too. you may never like it, but you can find a work around.

As someone who owns this tablet the physical buttons are a huge step backwards. Why? That POS menu key. Coming from the original Note 10.1 it's ridiculous constantly hitting that menu button to find out if it has a menu available. Compare to the original Note 10.1 where menu options appear in the action bar. Samsung has completely ruined the tablet experience with their incredibly stupid design choices. This tablet is such a huge pain to navigate. Why can't somebody else offer a Wacom stylus on their 10" Android tablet? I wish Google would throw an S Pen'ish stylus on their Nexus 10 so I can rid myself of Samsung's incompetence. I've never had such a frustrating tech purchase.
I have a Note II with a physical menu key but it's not nearly as frustrating because everything is so close together. I feel like my hand is running a marathon with this tablet having to move all ovef the place to navigate the UI.
I love the S Pen. It works beautifully. The screen is gorgeous. It's not a brick like some other high resolution tablets. It's very powerful and fast. Why oh why did they throw hardware keys on this thing and muck everything up. I would gladly take the black bar on the bottom with home, task switch and back if I could.
The disable hardware keys mod cannot come fast enough for me.

i'm not really diggin the physical buttons either. there's enough screen real estate to have the nav bar on the bottom. the home button is ok, but the menu and back have becoe more and more of a nuisance. i tolerate them on the gn8 b/c of the extra screen area i get plus using the soft nav buttons hack doesn't hide button properly in full screen video.
i can get use them being there on the note10 but i don't won't like them better than soft nav buttons. i hope if they hack it that it'll properly hide in full screen.

I haven't read the posts in this thread, but I wanted to comment that I happen to like the hard buttons. I'm right handed and hold it with my left like OP. I like that I can reach the option, home and return buttons (this is what you all mean by "hard buttons" right?) with my thumb. The design feels very intuitive and quite natural. I also recently found out that you can quickly access the task manager by holding down the home button. It will open up a menu similar to the menu that opened when you pressed the double rectangle button on the older model. The more time I spend with this device the more I love it. My mom is actually getting the new Note 3 so she's going to let me have her Note 2. I can finally get rid of this iphone 3 that came free with my contract.

Loose/Wobbly power button.

It has been a month using my Lenovo P2 and from the first day itself the power button on my device is wobbly. It feels firm when pressing the power button but feels loose while swiping finger over it. Also the sound 'tick' when pressing the button is a bit louder than any ordinary power button.
Is it the same with your device??
Should i repair it with lenovo service centre??(heard people telling that they dont handle phone properly and a new problem arises)
I wanted to know,is this a problem of each unit or only my unit has this defect.

Yes same with mine. It's kinda strange the power/volume buttons are loose when the rest of the build quality is superb. And the loud button press sound is a bit annoying, but I got used to it I guess.

I sometimes feels that lenovo itself loosens the button by fitting such a tight case out of the box.

i returned my p2 because of an screen issue, however i also had a somewhat wobbly home button. from the very first use 4/5 times it felt like a little loose or worn... so it's either very subjective feeling or their home button / quality control is ****.

P2's build quality is not up to the mark,along with the loose buttons the screen is also stretched at the edges and it nowhere looks like 2.5D curve glass
