Hello all. 3 days ago, i got an Nexus 5x to replace my 5. I love the phone, and for the price I think I've made the right choice. The only thing that is bothering me is that somethimes, my Power/Volume buttons are weak/mushy and I only can say that I clicked them because the screen turns on/off or the volume changes.
My question is if this behaviour is normal, or my equipment is with some kind of problem. How is yours?
Thanks!!

I've had access to a few Nexus 5x. Some have mushy buttons, some don't. My current one has pretty good tactile click feedback. I found the power button has more incidents of being mushy than the volume +/-. I think in most cases it doesn't really make a difference and if you use the fingerprint scanner to turn on, it cuts down in half the number of uses the power button gets.

So, in your opinion, it's not worthing send my nexus to RMA? If there is a high chance of the new one also have the mushy buttons, I would prefer staying with this. At least the only bad aspect of this nexus is the buttons (which are working just fine now)

I obviously don't have long term experience with the 5x buttons, but on the Nexus 7 2013 they also had some units with mushy buttons (as well as some with good tactile feedback). Despite thinking the mushy buttons would not be as good for longevity, they still work fine.
I can't say for sure in your case, but I probably wouldn't bother replacing unless you have some other problem you also wanted to address.
Then again, I'm not you and the power/volume button might be something you interact with every day and these minor annoyances can build up.

Thanks sfhub. I will return it because i already have asked for it and because not only the buttons are mushy, but also the power button is too loose for my taste (the other 5X that I know have, at least, a firm power button). But if the newer unit come with the same mushy buttons, I probably will just accept it.
Thanks!

This is crazyyyy! Why did they put the power button on the other side of the volume button? I'm finding myself constantly turning the volume down when i try and turn the screen of because your hand naturally positions your fingers there to get some leverage!
Would have been much better along the top edge IMO
Agree should have put it on top like the nexus one and desire
The phone is too long to have the power button on top. It's also too thin at the top to have a button there, but the power button location is mostly because of the phone's size.
I did this once now I dint its all about how you hold the phone and now I don't press any volume keys when hitting the power button

You'll get used to it. It's not better or worse than a button on the top, just different, especially when you come from another phone. Give it a week or two and this becomes a none-issue.
As said above
This had been standard design for Samsung Android phones since the GS1

I have to agree that the current location is plain stupid.
The number of times I've hit it when either using the volume buttons or holding my phone playing a game is too many to count over the last week.
Poor industrial design that one.
lol coming from an iphone , this is really the only thing that bothers me.
I actually prefer it to the unthought out position that HTC choose for their massive smartphones ... you'll get used to it and you'll love it

Who/what is crazy here?? Come on, grow up! Life is full of changes and opportunities. If you're this upset about a powerbutton on a different place than you are used to, then go live in a cave and don't move.

yeah i still go for the home button like on my iPhone, but i've only had my Nexus 4 days..
I like the power button being on the side much better. Especially for these bigger devices. It would be awkward to unlock with one hand if it was on top. I don't know maybe I'm a bit biased because I have owned the gs1 and gs2. Either way I have never had an issue with the button placement before.
I like it where it is, on the side. Previously I have had some HTC phones, so I've experienced both. In my opinion, it's way easier and faster to turn the screen on/off. And I've never had a problem with it.

Same with me. I've also had 2 previous HTC devices, but I prefer the power button on the side now.
The thing that really tripped me up is the volume being on the opposite side. That messed me up more than the power button location.
Just a guess, but I'm guessing it has something to do with the screenshot feature. Having buttons on the opposite sides allows you to just squeeze the phone in the position you're probably already holding it in.

The screenshot feature came long after the side button placement on phones. The button combination for it was likely created for the reason you said though. Well that and they're pretty limited in what combinations they can do when there aren't many buttons.
Volume rocker is loose. Rattles around. Works good though. Anyone else with a brand new pixel xl experiencing this?
Regards
Nope. Mine is solid.

Well if more people say the same I'm gonna return it. I would see they'll just give me a refund. I'm really not a massive fan of the device as it turns out. Which surprises me. Maybe the smaller one I'd like better idk

I really like mine. I'm glad I got it.
So seriously guys. You're telling me that if you wave your pixel xl in like a fanning motion sort of rapidly you dont hear any rattle AT ALL.
No rattles here
Dammit. Last thing I want to deal with right now. Why couldn't it have just been solid like yours? All the anticipation and ugh. Not to go all emo but it makes me disappointed big time.
I guess in the am with my coffee I'll fire up this support feature and see how it goes. Subscribe to the thread as I'll be updating it late. Feel free to chime in with your experience. Need to know if anyone else has this issue.
Thank you all.
No rattle here.

I just received mine, I have 2 devices, a regular and an XL. If i shake them very fast in a top to bottom direction I get a tiny bit of rattling out of both of them from the buttons. Minor issue but solid would be nice.
So, at first I thought I had the same issue as you-- but the rattling persists even while holding the volume rocker and power button.
Are you 100% positive yours is the volume rocker?

Since you mention it...yes. Power button loose too. Both of them in fact.
I already had a support chat and they insisted on sending me a new device. Now we'll see how long it takes to get here.
The device is great otherwise. I would've held onto it for a while because it's def not a deal breaker. I really just wanted to reach out to support and the issue documented on their end at the very least.
I have the same issue with my Pixel XL volume rocker, its quite loose and rattles when shaking phone.
But also can hear something is loose inside the phone, just tapping with finger on the upper side of the screen while holding the vol rocker clearly can hear rattling from inside.
Also the power button press click is quite loud same with vol rocker.
Also screen tapping feels wired a bit, like theres empty space under it (like tapping the empty box)

I know there is already a dedicated thread for issues and I post it in their. But also stay right here that I had a major freeze and had to reboot the phone this morning. That's a little frustrating.
Apparently the rmas are going out overnight so I should have a replacement device soon. Dying to see if my replacement has the same problem. Pretty interesting you have all these people waiting weeks for shipping but I could be on my second device by the weekend already.

Thanks for chiming in. I must be out of my mind. I went to Verizon store that had a pixel XL in stock. Checked it out and it's the same as mine. Volume button loose. Rattles when I shake the phone ever-so-slightly. What are the odds that there was another device like that?

Didn't notice a rattle or looseness, but if I take my Pixel XL and do a jerky fanning motion it does sound like the power button or volume buttons are rattling. In normal use I do not hear any rattling and they don't feel overly loose. This was not the case on my N5. Those buttons rattled with just normal use (gently turning the phone over). They did address the problem on the N5 on later builds ( http://www.droid-life.com/2013/12/13/slight-hardware-tweaks-already-being-made-to-the-nexus-5/ )
I have two Pixel XL's, the buttons are very slightly loose in an an up and down motion parallel to the phone's screen. Nothing of major concern. If I shake the phone vigorously, I hear a bit of a rattle. But I'm really shaking it. Not something you would hear on a day-to-day basis.
The buttons feel very steady and clicky when pressing.
Hey all, new Bullhead owner here
Long time LG Nexus buyer; Mako, Hammerhead and now this It's been pretty well established that the previous two phones' power buttons wore down exceptionally quickly for some people and became unresponsive, as was the case with me.
I was wondering if LG has finally made sturdier more robust power/volume buttons in the Bullhead -- reason being I'd really prefer staying on stock ROMs, but if I need to flash a ROM with volume rocker wake etc I suppose I shall have to for the sake of longevity, haha.
How would you rate the buttons this time around? Let me know and thanks in advance!
I've noticed they are not that responsive compared to my Nexus 6 and they are a more delicate plastic. The buttons are better now that I ha e a case that presses the buttons more directly but I think you can expect them to be what they are from a budget phone.
Is anyone else experiencing issues with the power button on their 2XL?
I have the Black & White version and the orange power button seems to be protruding less and less from the main frame, making it difficult to press.
It's still quite "clicky" but in comparison to the volume rocker it's much more be recessed.

I've noticed that. It seems to fit a little more flush with the frame. not a deal breaker for me. I've got a decent screen... Can't risk a replacement lol
Mine still seems fine, been kept in a Ringke case since new so possibly doesn't get pushed in as far as a naked button.
I've had it in the Google fabric case since I got it which also covers the buttons. I think it also may have something to do with that...the fabric case button is much bigger and pops out more...and now that I've taken the case off, the actual power button feels less prominent.
I rarely use the button.
So, I activate the phone using finger print and turn the screen off using "screen off" app

Ah good shout. I've just activated a similar feature in Nova Launcher. Thanks for the tip.
Yes, same here. Orange button seems slightly recessed.
My dad just got his Pixel, and I have had mine for over 2 months. Both power buttons are identical. Protruding slightly less than the volume rocker. It's definitely not getting worse over time.
I've thought the same thing on the ones i've had but this was the 3rd one i've had and all have been the same spot. Has never failed me yet though had it since launch
Just got the 6 pro today..anyone notice their power button is a bit less clicky than the volume rockers?
And if you press the power button at the very edge, you get almost no audible click. Have to click it directly down at the middle.
The volume buttons you can click at the very edge and still get an audible click.
Shrugs, not a huge deal, especially with the current shortages, just wanted to see if it was just me who had it.
Yes, both my volume buttons are louder than my power button. Not an issue at all as all feel good.
yeah I gotta press harder on power then volume

Okay cool, yeah, just wanted to make sure it wasn't a defective device and I needed to RMA. WIth the current shortages..no clue how long a RMA would take tbh..
Old thread, but I bought two phones and both have identical power buttons; where the top and bottom edge of the buttons push in but do not engage/click the button.
Essentially you need to press directly in the middle of the button for it to engage.
I assume this is just how the button was designed. I highly doubt I got 2 phones with an issue. Also others seem to suggest this is how the button functions.
After trying Power, Volume Up, and Volume Down several times, they all feel exactly the same (clicky) to me. At least through my OtterBox Defender case.
All buttons should feel good with a wide sweet spot and uniform, positive action.
Poor design, poor quality and noticeable deviations are not what you pay the big bucks for in a flagship phone.
Yes, well... the Titanic was the flagship of the White Star Line.
