Which route to go for an Unlocked Verizon M8? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've got an unlocked Verizon M8, and I don't know if flashing ROMs made for the Verizon version would kill my unlocked status? Which route would I go about to flashing ROMs and tweaking my phone without losing my unlocked status?
Thanks.

You won't lose unlocked status unless you relock the phone yourself.

An unlocked phone may be locked again?

I got an unlocked at&t fuze(touch pro) few days ago. I don't know how it was unlocked. I wonder if it may be locked sim again after upgrading a rom or radio?
Nope man. I think it has to do with the radio or something like that, not the ROM. But to be safe lets hear what more knowledgeable members have to say.
new roms or even radio roms don't relock phones
Fuse locked or unlocked?
How do I confirm that the phone I bought that was suposed to be unlocked actually is?
Thanks
You can install all roms that u want... and if you want to relock your phone, you have to do the work with a separate tool

Unlocking T-Mobile M9 phone?

I have a question and could find an answer, well maybe a few... First if you have an unlocked version of the m9 directly brought from HTC all updates come from them not any carriers? With that being said if you by a T-Mobile version and get an unlock code from them will updates still come from them or HTC?

HTC updates the phones sold through HTC. Any phone with carrier branding has HTC submitting their software to the carrier, and then it's released after carrier approval. It makes no difference if the phone is locked, unlocked, used on a different network, etc.
The only way you can go about getting updates directly from HTC in the past is through S-Off and a CID change, effectively changing your device ID, but A: I'm not sure if this is still the case and B: If you're asking the question that you asked, this is going to be a bit too complicated for me to explain at the moment. So the simple answer is No.

If you unlock the phone you will have to manually update the phone. If you stay stock you will get updates from T-Mobile, although they will lag the official (and XDA unofficial) releases by a substantial time.
Most folks unlock because they want to flash a custom ROM anyway, and will get updates on that ROM, rather than HTC or T-Mobile.

hmmmmm actually depends on which UNLOCK. If he meant unlocking it to make it carrier free but leaving everything stock then it'll update automatically. If he unlocks the bootloader but still remains stock without changing anything then it'll be auto still. I believe the only time you need to manually update is when you alter the recovery partition of the phone (installing custom recovery CWM/TWRP/etc) which means you'll probably run a custom rom, which also prevents automatic updates.

I'm assuming he meant unlock the bootloader, not the carrier. But I personally would not go to the trouble of unlocking the bootloader unless I was going to go custom ROM.

yeah I got that, but he said unlock code and from T-mobile so I deduced it to carrier unlocking lol.
Well I actually already unlocked the boot loader and using custom ROMs so not that be of a deal more so for my understanding. So if everything was stock and just got an unlock code from T-Mobile to unlock the device and say used the phone on AT&T or Verizon where would the updates come from ? The carrier you are on at the time or HTC?
By the way that's for the help and responses guys!

You are not going to get updates for a T-Mobile phone while on an AT&T network, even if you stayed stock. I don't think the download would work, and even if it did the ROM would not work with your variant. I think they will detect that your phone is not AT&T and not even offer the update.
It sounds like you have installed a custom ROM. In that case you won't get OTA at all, from anywhere; you simply update the ROM when the developer releases a new version.

Rooting Unlocked Phone Question

I have an ATT phone currently unlocked and using it on T-Mobile. I want to root and use it on T-Mobile, but Im a little nervous that once I root, and wipe everything, the phone will be re-locked to ATT. So my question is, once I root will I lose my carrier un-lock?
It might be helpful to clarify a couple of things. It sounds like you're currently SIM-unlocked (thus able to use your AT&T branded M9 on T-Mobile). Are you currently bootloader-locked and want to unlock it so you can root? Or are you already bootloader unlocked?
Rooting definitely does not wipe/re-lock anything. Unlocking your bootloader triggers a system wipe. My understanding is that once your phone is SIM-unlocked, system wipes don't affect your phone's SIM status.
Sorry for the confusion. I am currently sim unlocked, and I want to bootloader unlock. However, before I unlock my bootloader, I want to make sure that I wont re lock my sim. My ultimate goal is to unlock bootloader in order to root, but I dont want to relock my carrier to ATT. Yes, it is an ATT phone and I'm using it on T-Mobile.
I'm pretty sure that unlocking the boot loader will not affect your SIM-unlocked status.
But if it were me, I would want a more definitive answer than that.
Another forum member may be able to answer for sure. In the meantime, consider asking HTC directly via their chat system. I've found them friendly and straightforward.

No you won't lose your unlocked network status.
The unlock once done is permanent.
There was one a while ago on the s3, an app, which was unofficial and I lost that a few times between flashes, but I don't think you'll have that issue.
Thank You. Unlocked boot loader, rooted and still have sim-unlock.

Is my model unlocked or not, and other stuff

Hi all,
I have a HTC that when I bought it, they SAID it should have been unlocked but I don't know if that means my bootloader is unlocked or something else. how can I tell if my model is unlocked model (model is just HTC 10 and I don't have any provider software installed on it either) ... I mainly ask as Android 7 was released to unlocked HTC 10 last year but I got no OTA notifications that it is ready for me.
Also if this doesn't mean that the bootloader unlocked and I need to go through it at HTCDev, then I believe this will wipe the phone... so I need to backup my stuff before I can unlock the bootloader, so I can root my phone, so I can install my backup stuff (Titanium Backup) any help on this one? i'm used to Samsung so the changes in how things work I'm still getting my head around.
Nobody knows? Is this the correct part of the forums to ask this sort of question? I didn't want to post in the wrong section and this seemed to be the closest fit.

When you buy a phone and if seller says that phone is unlocked it usually means "carrier/sim unlocked". Your phone might be carrier unlocked, but bootloader unlock is different. When you unlock bootloader than phone gets wiped. Google servers usually backup your apps and some data, but videos/music/photos I backup on my PC by connecting phone to a computer and copying files to a folder.
If you bought directly from HTC w/o purchasing through a carrier (such as Sprint, AT&T, Verizon), then you have an "Unlocked Model". That's completely different from having an unlocked bootloader, which is not necessary to get the Nougat update. If you have an unlocked (carrier-free) HTC 10, then you should be able to get the update. I restored mine to stock, and was able to update to 7.0. It's possible that it's not available in your country yet, or that there's some funny software glitches occurring.
Hope that helps!
Thanks all for the confirmation. So from that I do know from when I got my phone, which was only 4 weeks ago, and no modifications to it whatsoever
a) my phone is carrier unlocked
b) I need to unlock my bootloader but to do that I need to backup my app data, Google didn't backupt he app data when I migrated phones, so all my apps were empty and brand new when it all restored to my new phone... oh well.
c) whilst i SHOULD be eligible for nougat as I have a carrier unlocked HTC 10, perhaps it isn't available in Australia for HTC yet. My colleague who has a pixel XL is still rubbing it in my face that he has 7.1.1 already
Thanks

Rats..... i'll just keep waiting, or wipe my device unlocking the bootloader so I can flash a custom ROM like Viper or the like. Decisions. Wonder when the rest of the world will get the update

Verizon Pixel Bootloader

Okay so I just got a replacement on my Verizon Google pixel and after everything was setup I noticed that in the developer options it gave me the option to unlock my Bootloader. I know the Verizon models are locked and after 7.1 the exploit was patched. I have all the Verizon bloatware so is this just a bug or is it possible? I turned off all automatic updates just in case so should I go ahead and try?

If you want to try unlocking your bootloader go for it. But there's not much benefit to unlocking your bootloader unless you plan to root or flash a custom rom or custom kernel or something. Simply unlocking the bootloader but otherwise staying fully stock will not allow your phone to pass safety net so you won't be able to use Android Pay. There have been a few other posts from Verizon customers where they got phones with the option to unlock the bootloader enabled so you probably just got lucky.

If it was shipped from Carol Stream, Illinois and if you pop in your SIM and the Verizon website calls it a non-VZW phone., then you got a Google Edition. Since OEM unlocking is not grayed out on yours, it's almost for certain a Google Edition. Same happened to me, the bloatware came when the Verizon SIM was inserted.
I agree with the above jhs39 post, though, only do it if you have a reason. I wanted the Pure Nexus ROM and ViPER4Android so I did it.

I don't have the need for it unlocked now but is it possible that an update can remove the option as I do want to flash a rom in the future.

Ah I see. It was shipped from that location and I checked the IMEI on Verizon's website and it says it's not capable for some reason so I'm guessing it's a GE.

If you plan on flashing custom in the future then I would unlock now so you don't have to lose all you're data later. Rather wipe while it's new and doesn't have months of data on it.
You never know when you might get screwed over by an update and or want to flash back a version.
I say unlock to give yourself a few more exit strategies should anything go wrong and if you decide to root and rom at some point later you aren't gonna wipe your device.
If you want to pass safety net for android pay you just need to flash a custom kernel.

That's true. But if you use Android Pay or any other apps that require safety net they will stop working unless you flash a custom kernel. If that doesn't matter to you then you should unlock the bootloader while you can.
