Hello. I have a problem with M9 internal storage - something takes about 3.5 gigs, but this "something" is not visible. I did factory reset, formatted internal storage from TWRP - still the same. Another phone (M9 too) after reset has internal storage almost empty, as it should be. So, is there a way to full format and run file sysmem check for internal storage? Via ADB maybe?
Check the data folder. Thats where all the crap is held. You can explore the system with es file explorer. Check the sizes of folders. Check /data/data.

The es file explorer is bloated with ads and unnecessary (and in case of the cleaner function even harmful) extra tools. There are alternatives like solid explorer.
If the phone got set S-OFF recently then it's completely normal that it lacks those 3 GB. There's a tutorial here on xda that explains how you can recover that space. I'll add a link to this post as soon as I find the guide.

I recently flashed cm10.1 on my GS3 and now I've got all my internal storage stuck in the storage/emulated/0/android/obb or storage/emulated/legacy/android/obb locations. Under settings it shows total space 12.05gb, available is 668mb but less than 1/4 of the visual bar is full and accounted for. Sd maid is showing the obb folder is holding 11.39gb but no matter what explorers I use it always appears empty. Anyone know how to free up this spae? I can't find anything anywhere about this. Thank you ion advance.

Restoring it doesn't free the space up at all. Even tried restoring my backups and the space remains full.
The obb folder is what holds all of your game data. If you have a lot of games installed, especially ones such as Need for speed, grand theft auto, etc. Go into it and clear out the data for all the games you don't play.
I have zero games installed at all. It shows absolutely no files in the folder both regular and hidden and I cannot do anything to the folder whatsoever. Even a clean wipe won't help
This is all in the CM10.1 thread. It's all user data for different profiles. Format your sd card if you dont like it. Just make sure it's empty.

I have not seen it anywhere. This is all on the internal memory, not the sd card. Everything has stated it's empty but the system storage option in the settings . isn't there some way to force delete this folder?

Tablet terminology, my bad. After switching from CM 10.1 to another ROM and copying its contents to the external sd, I formatted my internal sd in recovery.

there is an xposed module that can fix this problem ..found this in google news app on my tablet,very helpfull for gamers.its called OBB to SD...install xposed framework on device as long as you running dalvic on your phone and not ART,cause xposed is not compatiable with ART,my gues is your running dalvic ...google xposed and read ..i see you have allready solved the problem..just adding to the answer,this is if you wanted to keep the files,for games..it moves all the files to the external storage,just make sure you get a large sd card..i like games,so i really find this mod helpful,also store my games on my 64 gig external storage
workaround and I thought it would be a nice idea to write it here.
I came to the counclusion that if I did a fresh new reset factory and installing a large mount of files in the internal storage's obb folder it ended up being deleted after rebotting my tablet.
So I decided to do a few steps the next time I reseted my tablet. First, I copied my files using my pc into the SD Card. Then, I installed a random game from Google Play so the tablet could "adapt itself" and install its own obb folder. After that, I installed my apps but not all at once but one at the time and rebooting after every installation for making sure it was all ok.
It concluded not having the error again and after having deleted the random game from the begining my tablet had finally worked.
Hope this idea helps someone having the same problem as I did. Just don't copy all obb files at once, don't copying it directly from the computer but copying them from the SD Card and install some random game for making sure it can at least hold those obb files.

How is anyone else supposed to know what's on your device? Use a root file explorer, not the garbage Samsung one.

on my HTC One X I've got under App Storage 4.79 GB used on 6.76 GB total and under Phone Storage 1.40 GB used on 25.24 GB total.
This is the situation just after I installed a new custom rom on the phone, so without any application from the market or pictures, music and videos!
So why my phone has 4.72 GB of "other" in the App Storage? Is it a bug? Can I fix it?
Hope someone knows how to get all that GB back.

I never really checked what those 4 plus GB are, maybe system files? but I'm pretty sure it's normal. I see some other guys asked this question, and also my phone has similar data usage.
Not sure if you've solved this yet, but if you grab SD Maid off of the play store you can use that to find out what's taking up all the space. It's also pretty useful in general for clearing out junk files etc.
I've downloaded SD Maid and I can see 328Mb in /data and 624Mb in /system. These together with the small folders are gonna make not more than 700Mb in total, so the 4Gb must be in the folder /sys that SD Maid doesn't even scan. I have also noticed some loops in the /sys folder, something like enter in a subfolder and find yourself in another directory always inside /sys but in a different location. What should this folder contain?
Someone else might have to correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the /sys directory just contains android system files, so I doubt your phone would be too happy if it had glitched out enough to start duplicating files in there.
Did you wipe external storage before installing the rom? Could be that it's just leftover files on the sd card from apps you had installed on the previous rom.
Might be a bit of an extreme solution, but you could backup all your apps, messages etc, migrate the backups across to your pc then wipe absolutely everything from recovery before doing a fresh install of the rom. I know twrp recovery lets you wipe the system partition and external storage as well as the regular stuff (cache, dalvik etc), so just blitz the phone and start fresh. Should be a pretty fail-safe fix, just make sure you transfer everything you want to keep onto the pc before wiping, ready to be transferred back afterwards.
When you press advanced view on SD Maids first page, it will show you all found partitions.
/sys is mostlikely not the issue here.
I'm not sure how the partitions are set up on your device, but usually installing a new ROM does not wipe the internal sdcard location.
Where are the 25GB "Phone storage" located ? on the internal sdcard?
I'm not an expert but I don't think that the folder /sys contains android system files, or better it probably does but not 4 GB otherwise all the HTC One X should have the App Storage full of 4 GB of system files, instead seems to be just a problem of few phones. When I installed the custom ROM I did wipe everything, format all the folders and try to make the phone as clean as possible but the GB are still there.
SD Maid doesn't show me the /sys folder, and if I put together all the others folders that it shows to me the total amount doesn't reach the 4 GB, more like 800 Mb.
The HTC One X has two storages, "App Storage" (6.76GB total) and "Phone Storage" (25.24GB total). App Storage is the one where the kernel and rom are installed and that most of the applications doesn't touch, while the Phone Storage is like a normal SD Card for the other phones that can be formatted etc.

My storage windows looks just like yours too, dunno if its meant to be like that. Prob just the system files for the OS but we can see if as used space in the new rom where as we didn't before.

Would it be possible for someone to help me figure out where my storage space has gone? I seem to have only about 500MB left on my internal memory, but the things using space don't add up to that and neither does checking the folder sizes. I'll post the picture of my storage map. I've been trying to figure out what is going on, but I'm stumped. Any help would be appreciated!

Find a better app that actually lists folders and file sizes, i uses 'Storage Analyser' from the play store. This should help you narrow down where the culprit is (or confirm androids report).

Thanks for all the replies! So went ahead and ran the SD tool in es and ran the storage analyzer tool as well. Very bizarre data: es reports free space of 1.36gb and I added up literally all the files listed and got about 5.8gb used on the storage card while es reports 10.68gb used. So I went ahead and ran storage analyzer which shows a whopping 7.27gb free. Taking the full size of the memory 12gb - 7.27gb actually gives the sizes of the files added up manually. System storage reports about the 1.36gb free. Any further ideas?
Edit - I forgot to mention I'm running paranoidandroid 3.99 rc2 on this s3.

How many applications do you have installed? Also, how much data are they all taking up? The SIII is very strange as opposed to my previous device. As you know, we have 16GB devices. 4GB are unusable. Every application you installs to the internal SD card, as well. Meaning you have less space for more things. Very poorly managed, but what can you do? Unless partition sizes are updated and allocated in a better way, there is no way around this. So depending on how many applications you have installed and the data that they are taking up, that could give you the answer to your problem. Also, check the Download folder on the internal storage. Not sure how much you download, but I find a lot of stuff in there that takes up space. Especially ROMs, GAPPs packages, et cetera.
One more thing that you can do if all else fails is reinstall your ROM from a clean wipe. Not sure if you dirty flash or anything but if so, you are leaving files on your device that take up storage. So if the above does not help, try this and it should help you out. Wipe data, cache, dalvik cache, format data, system, and cache and then install everything.
Hope this helps you out and if not, let me know and I will see if I can come up with anything else. If I am a broken record and you know all of what I said, disregard and sorry for wasting your time. But again, hope I was able to help out.

Ive used the low effort rooting method. I can't find any .img file in storage so I'm pretty sure I deleted it right after I completed the process. But I noticed In settings>storage>internal storage under miscellaneous there is a +10gb file { system data} that is whited out. I was thinking that it was part of the .img file when i rooted with thecubed s method that i forgot to delete. But I can't find the .img anywhere in Root Browser>storage. What is the 10 gb system data file whited out. Under internal storage? And I am curious post a screenshot of some of your internal storage screen.
P.s. And its not anything to do with twrp backups cause that's below on the bottom of miscellaneous.

That's no just a file. That is the whole OS with System files/Caches/Reserved-space/logs/backups and Apps + their generated data. You may reduce its size a little by wiping caches and removing preloaded bloatware.

Did you lose any apps in the rooting process? I lost a lot of LG apps (bloat) in the process, even the stock video player. I'm just curious to know.

No I didn't lose any apps. The 81110h.img file is the same img thats on the phone, i think, but with supersu injected.
Now i did flash the xtreme rom that is debloated. And it works fine. Its just that i was trying to reset the sys data in storage back to nominal because i dont. Remember if i deleted the origional h81110h.img from internal stor.
Download the lg smart world apk and you should be able to get that video player back.

I’ve tried many suggestions to free up space on my AFTV, but it’s still 91% full. I’m down to very few apps. All of internal storage folders in ES file manager are basically empty. In the summary of the internal storage analysis, it says “others” is 4.95 gigabytes. I don’t know what else to try.
If your not rooted , just do a factory reset.
It might be that the recycle bin is turned on in es file explorer. Go check the es recycle bin. All the stuff you deleted may be in there taking up space.
