What is the Software Channel and how can I change it? - Moto Z Play Questions & Answers

Question: What is the Software Channel?
I have a Mexican Moto Z Play. The Software Channel says attmx. I already flashed the RETLA and RETUS roms, and the Baseband Version do change (it says RETLA or RETUS depending on the rom), but the Software Channel still says attmx. I can't change that.
How can I change the Software Channel? I don't want to wait for ATT MX to get software updates.

Been trying to figure that out myself lol

Im also in attmx channel, not receiving security patch since august. Wondering if has something to do with IMEI or Serial number.

Same here. Still on security updates from August. This is ridiculous.

Potentially it can come from the bootloader you have on your phone. If you are brave enough to flash a bootloader from another variant you could possibly change your software channel, I think you would have to flash the modem from that same variant as well. Of course it is possible once you flash the bootloader that you could have a brick, but since the phones are pretty much the same anyways (at least XT1635-02), it should work. Just be aware of the risk.

Reflash bootloader and modem baseband would not change the software channel. I have a moto z, after flashed everything for retca, nothing changed, it is still retcn, Cid is 11.

I've flashed two different firmwares, and it's still "attmx"... Anyone knows how to change that?

You can't change your channel. At least no one has figured out how to, yet.

You need to think outside the box to succeed.

Wow! Mind sharing how you did this?

I'm also on 7.0 attmx. Flash either of the following roms and you should be all set:

Some threads say you can change software channel on moto phones from fastboot using this command:
fastboot oem config carrier CARRIER_NAME
Has anyone tried doing this?

I did "fastboot oem config ro.carrier" in cmd and this was spat back. I'm not going to change it without knowing if it does anything
edit:: It doesn't work.

Thanks. Not sure if any possible damage is reversible. I hope somebody with more knowledge or experience sees this thread.

I guess it works like this:
Code:
fastboot oem config carrier vzw
should change carrier to Verizon Wireless, but I haven't tried it yet.

This might work according to @erfanoabdi:
If you want to change your carrier I'm not sure it's possible but you can chenge display name on setting you have to unlock your bootloader first then
Find oem.prop in oem partition then change your retcn to eu
For example mine is :
#
# OEM_BUILD_PROPERTIES
#
ro.build.id=MCC24.246-37
ro.build.version.incremental=42
ro.build.display.id=MCC24-5
ro.product.name=griffin_retcn
ro.mot.build.oem.product=griffin_retcn
ro.mot.build.customerid=retcn
Or
You can also flash reteu firmware on your device too (this way is little bit better)
But remember first you need to unlock your bootloader

Is there any reason to change the software channel other than to potentially get 7.0 faster? I'm currently on RETLA, but I don't know any Spanish and it's annoying to read the system update info in Spanish; I'm also worried it may take me longer to get 7.0.

RETCN is chinese variant XT1635-03, right? When you said you flashed everything from RETCA (I think it is XT1635-02), it was really the entire firmware? I read at other thread that it would be dangerous to flash fsg, bootloader and modem from other version. Does your device remains dual sim?

My phone is XT1650-05, it is in Chinese software channel. I re-flashed everything to RETCA (which is XTxxxx-03) whatever included in the stock firmware, include bootloader kernel, modem, everything. After re-flash, everything is working fine, include dual sim. But this is not fix my problem. My problem is on Chinese channel "retcn" and CID=0x0B, I cannot use Freedom mobile network (previously Windmobile), 1700MHz/2100MHz. The issue is still same as before. To fix this issue I think even now I have no time yet, tried something, It looks like the CID, software channel and modem configurations are stored in the xml files in some partitions. To access these partitions and modify the files need root access. I tried to root my device but failed.
What I did root my device:
Flash modified bootloader (which is no encryption), installed customer recovery TWRP, and superSU. But root is failed.
My plan to do is first get root permission, download easy box (not necessary), look for files related to configuration of software channel, modem configuration and CID, and then modify them.
Maybe I will give up as I have no time to figure out all of them

Problem with upgrading to 6.0

Hi guys
Recently i bought my girlfriend LG G4. Now I think it's from Singapore, and I totally have no idea, how to update it. I have 5.1 now, and of course I wanna 6.0. Using automatic option from smartphone still showing "up to date". LG bridge is finding some firmware, but after downloading, at 1% i got error. LG UP always saying, that's bad kdz file ( I download 4-5 of them). When i'm trying to check version by IMEI on devtester, I get nothing. I have no clue what could i do next .

Go into Settings > About Phone > Software Version - at the bottom of the tab click on 'Software Version'. It should give you a version with 10(?) in it (last few numbers in the string). Find one with the same string with 20(?) for the same carrier. Use LGUP-NEW (https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/help/lgup-install-kdz-mm-lp-t3249803) and click upgrade to set the 20(?) kdz file you found, then proceed to upgrade it.
Good Luck.

Okay, I'll check. Tell me only, because I'm not a native speaker in english, what do you mean by "carrier" in this context? And thank you for your interest - I was searching help in the biggest android forum in my country, and nobody was enough kind to respond .
Anyway, this is worst present I ever made to someone . First of all i was waiting 2 months for package, second problem with battery in theoretically brand new phone and now this soft issue. Well, I'll stay with Samsung s8 for myself than g6 .

By carrier, I mean the wireless company that provides the phone/texting services to your phone ... if the phone wasn't bought from the original services company.
If it was, the other option might be to try a factory data reset to see if it allows the update to 6.0 to come through automatically - you will have to back all your data first, otherwise you will lose it.
PS: Don't forget to click the Thanks button ...

Tell him to flash the H815 European firmware... it will not do any damage because the OS has the same signature across all variants, so the bootloader will accept.

I know that i can't root phone with 6.0 but first of all - it's for my girlfriend and i think, that she don't care. Second - with quite long history with android, i never rooted any of them. I never saw a reason and also i'm bit scared when we're talking about more complicated actions . Anyway, thanks for advice. We will in next 5 hours if i finally get 6.0 on this phone

You're lucky you have the European version.. you have no idea how much hassle I went through to get that version...
So anyways, since your bootloader is unlockable, I recommend you unlock it first, prior to flashing anything mentioned by sdembiske.
I recommend you also root the phone and install TWRP, just incase something goes wrong while flashing, you can easily recover the phone, and not have it completely destroyed.
Once you have rooted, unlocked bootloader, and installed TWRP, you can safely do literally anything on the phone
Flashing the rom can easily make your 700USD device worth 0, within seconds... so Please .... take the precautions.... and install TWRP
Cheers

LG Flash Tool has many more bricking issues than LGUP-NEW. If you ever decide you want to roll-back to 5.1, LGUP-NEW will throw up a roll-back version error if one is present - LG Flash Tool will not and will result in a bricked phone. Overall, your best and safest bet is to use LGUP-NEW.
One note: There are fraudulent sellers of supposed H815's out there and as you bought yours through auction there are no guarantees. To be on the safe side I would check with the seller to see if you can ascertain if he was the original owner and ask where the phone was purchased (what country) and who the original carrier was.

Power down the phone, pull off the back cover and take out the battery. There should be a white tag under it - make a note of all the letters and numbers there. Provided the tag hasn't been tampered with, it should provide a good idea of what model you have and help narrow down your search for a kdz/tot that will work. I would still check with the seller of the phone and seek some verification. If the auction site is reputable, you may have some recourse if the phone is not as it was sold as.

Hey buddy, let's check whether your bootloader is unlockable before you do anything. Please download ADB (Android Debug Bridge)
Before we do anything, make sure "Enable OEM Unlock" and "USB Debugging" options are enabled.
Once you install ADB, open Command Prompt (Press Windows Key + R , then type 'cmd' and press Enter key)
Issue the following commands:
Code:
cd C:\adb
Code:
adb start-server
Code:
adb devices
At this point, your device should show up under the list of devices. If it doesn't issue the following commands to restart the ADB server:
Code:
adb kill-server
Code:
adb start-server
Then, check again whether the device is being detected
Code:
adb devices
If the device is not showing, please check whether drivers are properly installed
If the device is being shown, you can proceed to the following command:
Code:
adb reboot-bootloader
If the device just boots back to Android, then the bootloader is locked, and you could have any device aside from the H811 or H815 European version
If it boots into the bootloader, then you have either the H811 or the H815 European version, and you should be able to easily root, install TWRP and flash any variants kdz file.
Now, if you have got this far without booting back to Android, time to unlock bootloader:
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
Once complete, issue:
Code:
fastboot getvar unlock
If you get the message "Unlock: Yes", then you have successfully unlocked bootloader.
Hope this helps

Hi,
Sorry for very late reply. Never thought someone would care to help after such a long time.
I never tried LGUP because I cant find the right ROM for my device. Hardware info page shows H815 while on adb it shows up as LGF500L.....(last time I checked F500L is korean variant).
Also the device does not have recovery mode. When trying to boot into recovery a red exclamation comes up with "No command" written.

Sounds like it might be a 'frankenphone' - the only way to fully ascertain what the phone model actually is, is to open it up and see what is printed on the motherboard. Refer to this link on how to tear it down: https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/LG+G4+Teardown/42705
You can also then use SALT to ascertain what the GPT compatability is - that will tell you what roms are safe to flash in order to upgrade.

CPU-Z will not be reliable in the information it provides you as it only provides the information that has been installed on it. As I stated, the only way to truly ascertain is to strip it down and see what is printed on the motherboard - it is not difficult and there are no shortcuts to be 100% sure - if you don't do it the way I suggested, you run the risk of hard-bricking your phone when you flash something not meant for your phone. If you doubt me, check with steadfasterX, recognized developer who know this stuff inside-out ...

If your bootloader is actually unlocked, you should be able to - you should use the latest 'preview' version for the rom version you are planning to flash. Refer to this link: https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/development/recovery-twrp-3-touch-recovery-t3442424

Can somebody give me a link for the right kdz for my phone.
Current installed software version : H81510h (So I hope flashing it might revive the phone).
Note : Quick reminder, this phone is unlocked and using in India.

When you say 'unlocked' you are referring to carrier/sim unlocked I presume. If you were actually bootloader unlocked, you should be be able to flash TWRP in fastboot mode.
Look, I'll say it again, strip your phone down and find out exactly what is stamped on the motherboard. The last thing you want to do is try and flash a rom from a different model than you actually have.
Then look for a MM 1220x up to 1220z rom for the phone model you actually have and upgrade it with LGUP-NEW. Then proceed to unlock your bootloader. If it is actually an H815 European version you should be able to unlock it officially on LG's site. If it another H815 version etc., you will have to unlock it unofficially with steadfasterX's UsU method BUT you must be on MM to avoid issues when installing any custom roms from then on.
Don't take any shortcuts.

Your looking for an H81520 with the latest alphabetical letter ... You'll have to decide on the one you want to try installing.

Correct. You will not find a 20h as the lower letters are used for previous android versions, higher letters for newer versions.

Just flash stock firmware. thats a pretty big mistake to make lol I'm pretty sure I made it quite clear in my guide to backup at least 2 or 3 times. But just flash stock firmware using the commands at the bottom of my guide. Even if the bootloader is locked the commands will work to reflash it still. The need links for stock firmware is also in the guide. And I will say this. If you took the newest update before rooting then you will have to wait for that firmware to be uploaded because its not uploaded yet.

The newest build is only a few days old so it will be nearly impossible to find online. And it has a different baseband and radio than the previous build. But the October update is OCP27.91-150
As long as the imei isn't zero you should be able to get service back. I had the same issue when I flashed an older firmware like a moron. But when I took the update again, I got service back. I don't recommend it because I may have just been lucky, but no matter what don't flash the gpt, asdspo(?) And bootloader with the older firmware. It'll mess your life up.

Try taking the update again over WiFi if you can. You shouldn't have an issue as long as you're back to stock. But the update is only 3 days old so you may have a chance.

Baseband is software. Radio is a piece of hardware. The piece of hardware that gets your carrier's signal. It can't be upgraded without physically altering the phone. Even then it would need to be the same exact radio because the stock drives probably wouldn't work, and the chances of a dev making a version for 1 person with a different hardware would be slim to none.

0 IMEI after Pie on XT-1789-03 Sprint

I have lost IMEI number after flashing Pie. On my Sprint Moto Z2 Force. Signal bar has turned grey and IMEI is showing as zero.
Wifi is working
Bluetooth is working
Barcodes in bootloader mode is showing some different IMEI no.
Downgrade to Stock Oreo or Naugat
If I downgrade to stock Oreo then I lost all wifi, sim and Bluetooth. Also no baseband found in bootloader.
Will appreciate if someone can help.
Thanks in advance.
If you have already flashed Pie Rom (including bl、 baseband), you will not be able to return to Oreo
Hello.
I am trying to research the imei bricks on Sprint models after Verizon pie update. In short, everything we understand says this should not be happening, and yet it is.
Can you, for research purposes, describe the state of your device when you applied the update? Was it running full verizon firmware down to the bl, modem, and gpt? I may have an experimental fix but I need to gather more info about the bricks.
Also, it is impetative that you don't flash any further modems for my fix to have a good chance to work. Thanks.
Thanks for the message,
The device working fine, very super smooth and I can feel the difference.
The only think which is not working is cell phone and it's because of 0 IMEI number, currently I am on pie retail version (NASH_RETAIL_9.0_PPX29.159-19_subsidy-default_regulatary-DEFAULT_CFC.xml) downloaded from mirrors lolinet com / firmware / Moto / Nash / retail
Pls let me know if you want more info.
Thanks in advance.

What firmware did you flash from? Stock? Do you have an unlocked bootloader?
If yes to all the above, I can give you some experimental things to try.
Yes to all and bootloader is unlocked.
btw i have flashed firmware in this order
1. i flashed NASH_PPX29.159_19_subsidy_DEFAULT_regulatory_DEFAULT_CFC.xml
then
2. XT1789-06_NASH_RETIN_9.0_PPX29.159-19_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml
and now on
3. NASH_RETAIL_9.0_PPX29.159-19_subsidy-default_regulatary-DEFAULT_CFC.xml
That's not ideal (the additional flashes) but what I have is still worth a try and you have nothing to lose.
The first thing we need is to boot twrp on the device using fastboot (get the latest .img here and fastboot boot twrp.img it). Once in twrp, immediately reboot to "EDL."
https://dl.twrp.me/nash/
Get drivers for qualcomm 9008 mode device if needed (should show in Windows device manager under "ports"):
https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=11410963190603862036
Then get the nougat blankflash here:
https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/nash/blankflash/blankflash_from_NDX26.183-15_17.zip
Extract and run the cmd inside. You may need to try a few times, on different usb ports. I heard usb 2.0 works best.
If it succeeeds, try flashing your stock firmware and see if imei is back.
Good luck. This is a real stretch but it just might work...
PS: This does have potential to completely brick your device. Please keep that in mind and weigh your options.
I have tried as per instruction but still getting the "baseband not found" status on all stock oreo & nougat firmwares. So when I flash Pie retail I get wifi and Bluetooth back with 0 IMEI status. so the situation is the same.
BTW I have read somewhere the 0 IMEI issue is related persist file/folder/. I may be able to share reference link of that discussion in a while. (Link of discussion)
Let me know if you want me to test anything else. Thanks again for your time. best

Please use latest TWRP from here https://dl.twrp.me/nash/ load it using fastboot and the in TWRP click reboot and select EDL.
Let me know if you face any issue.
i'm on the same boat
no celluler, no IMEI
wifi and bluetooth working
Everyone keeps trying to flash pie firmware that isn't for their variant and this is the result, no baseband. Plus once you upgrade to a pie modem, you can't go back to an oreo modem. Maybe something will come along and remedy that, that's a big maybe too. The devs are trying to find a solution, but there just might not be one. You can't blankflash your way out of it, and if you're not careful you can brick your phone for real. Not 9008 brick, paperweight. Not trying to be an ass, just trying to warn others. If it isn't pie for your phone, don't flash it.
Blankflash doesn't work anyways.
Stand by we are working on another fix.

Phone successfully booted with Verizon sim activation warning but IMEI was 0.

How to root Samsung Galaxy a50 us model

I want to root my a50 soon. Is anyone have us model can root?
From what I understand this phone is very new. Not to mention that it's if you are on a U variant like I am sad there is no root because the bootloader is locked I believe. I was trying to confirm with an expert or someone who knows more than me. My variant is "SM-A505U1"
I just bought this model of phone.
I found this url.
http://androidbiits.com/root-samsung-galaxy-a50-sm-a505u1-easily/
All the steps are not clear to me though yet.
My phone has no oem or boot loader unlock options in the settings.
It also has knox which may complicate things.

The snapdragon chip is locked only in the US per that post. I seem to remember something about a major security issue found in those chips.

I found this url on changing the csc,but it erases the config.
Maybe there is another method that does not do that such as the one mentioned above.
https://www.**********.com/how-to-change-csc-in-samsung-galaxy-phones/
Has anyone successfully flashed any combination firmware? I found this at halabtech, haven't tried to flash it. I thought I seen a bootloader unlock & root for ASH6 firmware I don't think it lets you downgrade though once you have the latest ASK1 firmware. I tried installing this one as well "https://support.halabtech.com/index.php?a=downloads&b=file&id=206734" the only part it failed on was on the boot.img.lz4 everything else flashed successfully. I hope this helps get a start to troubleshooting.
(ASH6 FIRMWARE) haven't tested yet. for A505U1 variant only!

Correction it seems that this is not a snapdragon chip.
I was able to look at the CSC by booting into safe mode and dialing the special number which includes the IMEI #.
They seemed to be all cscs in the US which is why they called it a "US version"
There are files that could be changed with the csc in them , but I don't know what the effect that would have. (maybe bad)
It seems that in the US version there is no OEM unlock option to change in the developer settings.
Also I have not found source code yet for this particular model. (SM-A505U1)
I tried all the root apk out there like kingo-root etc. None of them would root it.
It seems that to change the CSC, you need root access or an unlocked bootloader.
So that method will not work. It seems that unless samsung releases an upgrade that allows you to unlock the bootloader then we will have to wait. That is until
a new exploit is found, and released say via kingo-root etc.
I'm really dying waiting for opportunity to root this phone and make this phone runs so smooth
Here is one URl that provides a schematic for a related phone.

Is the boot loader stored inside the processor chip or on another one?

I just bought this model of phone.
I found this url.

All the steps are not clear to me though yet.
My phone has no oem or boot loader unlock options in the settings.
It also has knox which may complicate things.

It's just a click bait article.
If you read it carefully, they're assuming there is already a BL unlock for the A505U variants, which doesn't exist at the moment.
I just got notification of an upgrade. I was hoping that the new version would have the oem unlock feature.
I had automatic upgrade turned off nad automatic download on. I was looking at the message, and it automatically scheduled the upgrade without my permission. So I ran the upgrade. It did not add the oem_unlock feature. Maybe next time. Hint! Hint!

I got notice of an upgrade today. I had it set to autodownload. It said that after the upgrade was applied that I could not downgrade. Also it said the I had only 3 chances. Last time it upgraded without my permission. So I turned of the autodownload in the settings.
If I knew the new version would enable an unlocking feature, then I, of course, would upgrade.
I found a trick to the no Unlock OEM option that worked so well I didnt believe it the first time. But my bootloader is unlocked and remains unlocked.
It seems that if you specify automatic download it will upgrade it even if you turn that off.
This latest upgrade still does not have the oem unlock feature. I made sure that my automatic download is turned off.
Automatic download also means automatic install. It seems to download the upgrade into a region of the file system which only root can read.

That method did not work for me. I tried it again and it did not work.
"Samsung allows unlocking the bootloader on the international versions of their phones. But on the Samsung Galaxy S8, Samsung Galaxy S9, and Samsung Galaxy Note 8, the ‘OEM unlocking’ option only becomes available after 7 days of activating the device and adding a Samsung or Google account to the device. If you would rather not wait 7 days or if even after 7 days the button is still missing, XDA Senior Member altai1963 has posted instructions about how to fix the missing ‘OEM unlock’ button on "
Perhaps it requires a samsung account. I do not have one on my phone. Incidentally I noticed that all my contacts had been uploaded to google. I would never have knowingly done that. I had to export my contacts to a file, delete all my contacts making sure then that google was not being used, and then import my contacts from the file that I had saved them to. I was worried that I would lose all my contacts, but fortunately that did not happen. It would probably be good to verify that the file exists and notate it location using a file system browser.

juniord says that he unlocked his.
Unless I am misunderstanding what you wrote.
If you are saying that it can be unlocked, how do you recommend that it be done?

I added my samsung account, and tried it. It did not work. I had google and samsung logins provisioned in the phone.
So I guess that I am back waiting for the next exploit which might be a while if bonuses are paid for finding them.

He's either bsing you or trolling or has a different variant.. the "trick" they use has been around a while now but only works on models that are actually unlockable.. the USA variants are NOT unlockable from the start so any tricks will not work.. simple as that.. this has been discussed for years and everywhere on xda as well as many discussions about this specific model.. if u want bl unlock purchase an unlockable variant..
Ppl seem to get confused cuz some devices in USA are exynos models so they think they can bl unlock them but this is not the case.. just bcuz a device is exynos doesn't make it unlockable.

I did some research before I bought it. I also bought it because I could use it on multiple carriers.
The rooted ones that I saw must have been nonUS versions. What a waste of money. I only bought it because I wanted to root it and put a custom rom on it. I did not want to wait for a linux phone and truly 5g phones are coming out now.
