Here's my situation:
SAMSUNG EPIC 4G
I've updated roms without problem many times since buying my phone. I am currently on 2.3.4, gingerbred eh06. I cannot get the usb to work with my pc at all. I'm assuming that since the phone still charges, the usb is functional? I was going to try a flash back to stock ec05, but cannot do this because I don't seem to have CWM installed. I did, don't know what happened to it. All it says when doing a cw boot is android system recovery <3e>
I tried to follow the link for rooting my phone without a pc, but cannot get it to work because I don't have superuser access. I did but don't know what happened there also??? Apparently gingerbreak doesn't work on 2.3.4 from what I am finding. I'm about at the end of my rope here and am looking for somebody to throw me a bone. ANY IDEAS.
I should also tell you that I know the cables I have are good. I have 2 samsung and 4 aftermarket cables and they all work. My wife has the exact same phone and works every time, with every cable. Of course her phone hasn't had any "custom" work done to it if you know what I mean...
Try Heimdall. It installs its own drivers and is more robust. Post 2 in Development stickie of how to fix a semi-bricked Epic.

Tried that just now, didn't work. When I tell it to list devices, it comes up as unknown device and won't install any drivers. tried my wife's phone and it seemed to work just fine. Maybe the phone can charge with a broken usb port?????? AAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so you have no root and no odin/heimdall?
Yes it can charge with a bad port or a bad cable. Since the cables are good some of your usb port may be damaged somehow. Did you check for dirt or debris in the port?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Right, neither works. Its not the pc either. Tried win 7 64 and 32 bit, xp pro, ubuntu, joli os. Nada
Thought about tearing down phone and looking for dirt/debris. Just loking for all possibilities. I did fing a usb port on ebay for about 50 bucks, doesn't really look like something I could replace myself. ;'m assuming that it's soldered in.

I believe non warranty repairs like that are only $35 at Sprint.
Good job Sprint
Just left the Sprint store and they gave me a new phone. Tried like hell to get an upgrade to the Galaxy IIs, but no go. I gave them a boo hoo story and even told them i'd settle for the Nexus s, but they wouldn't budge there either.... Oh well. At least I got a new phone out of the deal. Kudos to the Sprint store and their employees though.
This happened to me at first too, then my phone stopped charging the battery. Maybe this is a sign of the port actually going out? Right now, I'm waiting on my replacement through Sprint without a charging phone.
I was able to finally get a good working combination of my brother's Evo cable and Odin 1.7 to flash back to stock for warranty work.
Hi All,
My SGS2X no longer connects to any PC for anything other than charging.
I've tried everything, trust me. I've come to the conclusion that it is defective and want to return it for a new one. The problem is that I have rooted it and need to undo this before I return it. Telus told me it would need to be sent to Samsung for testing before they will give me a new one, so I need to unroot before I allow this.
Is there any way to unroot without a USB connection to a PC or am I screwed?
Thanks,
Mael
you might want to send it in for repair, to have the USB port replaced
Try using a different wire this same thing happened to me i believe

You might haved tried that tho try another to be safe

every time my phone drops to the floor while plugged in, the first thing i always worry about is the usb port
because of those issues reported above
Tried different cables, same problem.
Same cables work with other devices and other phones...
Phone has never been dropped, plugged in or not, so must be a defect.
Seems like a defect to me and thus covered under warranty, only prob is that it's rooted, voiding the warranty. Hence the question on unrooting, but I don't think it's possible.
I may just put up with it for now... It's a hastle not having access to USB storage, but I can work around that. Once I decide what I want for a second phone (Nexus or Note), I'll buy that, then brick the GS2 and go for warranty replacement then...
Pain in tha a$$, but thems tha breaks...
just ... never mind
i was going to suggest Odin, but then i remembered, sheet no USB, no can't do
the stock rom can't be flashed form CWM on the external sd card? I didn't realize that ODIN was required to put back to stock. Just wanted to clarify this.
Have you tried blowing out your usb port on the phone with some compressed air ???
Had a friend of mine , brand new phone, his USB just stopped, it would charge, but nothing else ... Screwed with it for hours, then he blew it out, and it worked ..
Sometimes your phone just wants a good blow job, just like the rest of us ...
(yeah yeah rude crude and socially unacceptable , but hey still funny) ...
Never thought of that... I'll give it a try...

This thread describes a method for flashing a stock kernel and (somewhat) stock ROM by flashing the files with CWM. You won't need your USB port, I just don't know if the stock ROM linked to in that post, will pass for "stock" on your Telus SGS2X. It may be good enough to pass for a warranty exchange/repair, etc., or there may be a stock Telus ROM floating around that is CWM flashable.
Good Luck..
Have u tried the samsung usb cable that came with your phone? ive found samsung phones to transfer data with the stock cable...everything else just charges the phone....just a suggestion
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Tried the compressed air, no effect.
The ROM on the phone is stock, all I've done is root and install CWM.
To al appearances the phone is stock, but for the presence of superuser and CWM.
Tried the original cable, no difference...
Telus told me to go where I bought the phone, so I'm going to try going to BB and raising a stink, see if they will replace it...
By bb u mean bestbuy im sure they will they are awesome with returns well atleast the one by my house i like there no questions asked hahaha

You can use something like dropbox to transfer some more stockish looking ROM on your phone, but i'm not too sure how to lock it without USB cable. I'm too lazy now to reboot my phone into bootloader, but wasn't there an option to re-lock it?
Anyway, if this will happen to my GN i'll just pay €30 for USB port replacement. I had same issue on SGS2.

well... to be honest, i think thats a lot of money that can be spent on a phone thats pretty new. With that being said, it is cheap compared to what i would be paying if i had to pay full retail price.
------
To update this thread, I got my phone and charger replaced free from verizon. Basically, i had a bunch of different roms downloaded and tried to install some good ics looking roms. They didnt really work as well as i wanted so it was an easy solution to "brick" (and brick is used very very very loosely) my phone.
1. Wipe data/ cache / dalvik
2. Install zip from sd.
3. Pick out a different rom and let it install ---- BUT WAIT
4. Pull battery in the middle of installation.
I had to do it a couple of times, but eventually i got it to the point where the only thing that would show up was the google logo.
My thought was that they would just reflash to stock in the store, but the rep didnt really know what he was doing. He probably figured i tried to root (he asked if i tried to root... duh, NO!), and probably spent most of the time trying to get it to come on and didnt bother putting on their falshing machine thing.
Anyways, Since it was still a phone under warranty and they had no evidence of it being unlocked or rooted, they replaced my phone as well as my charger for free.
------
Im just hoping they dont secretly put a note under my account that i might root my phone.

well i just bought another phone lol one with a broke lcd for cheap
I have a GS3 that was rooted with a CM rom. I was using it the other day and the screen just suddenly went black. I tried rebooting it and popping out the battery, but to no avail. I can't boot it into download or recovery mode either.
When I put in the battery, the phone vibrates but nothing else. When I plug in the USB cable with no battery, it vibrates and the LED comes on for a few seconds before flickering off.
My first priority is data recovery, I've been a bad boy and haven't backed up my data for a while. My second priority is making it so they can't tell I have a flashed ROM when I send it out for warranty service, though AFAIK, this may be a nonissue.
I tried to make a 300k jig, and it didn't work (assuming I got the pins right).
Have you tried KAsp3rd's debrick method?
Stickies in development.

I'm not stuck in QHSUSB-DLOAD as far as I can tell. Would it still be effective?
Could be. It basically allows you to boot download mode from the sdcard. From there you Odin flash the firmware and hopefully that would fix it. But if it's a hardware failure, which it could be per your description, I doubt anything will work.

New update. I figured out that the 300k ohm resistor trick DOES work, but only for like three seconds. Meaning that they'll be able to see the custom binary count, but (as far as I know) I can't reset it to 0.
The weird part is that it only works if I plug the usb jig into the phone before putting the battery in, if I put the battery in first, it doesn't work. It almost seems like it constantly thinks the power button is being pressed or something.
I guess I'm opening it up and looking for a short. The power button operates normally tactile-y speaking.
EDIT: new new update. I wasn't able to find anything physical when I looked at the pcb. But I verified my theory, somewhat. When I hold home and volume up/down (without touching the power button) when I put the battery in, it boots into download mode for a second before shutting down.
It's not behaving exactly like it would if it was only that though, because I tried holding the power button down on the t999l I got as a replacement, while inserting the battery, and the boot screen shows up for a few, where a boot screen never shows up on the bad phone.
DOUBLE EDIT: can I swap that pcb with the one from the t999l, or are they too dissimilar? Would I be able to swap it with one from another t999, or does the board that has the power switch also have the onboard storage?
TRIPLE EDIT: I answered my own question, the eMMC and the power switch are on the same board. But if the fault is caused by something else (e.g. a camera), would I be able to plug all the other hardware from the t999l into the t999, or can I just boot up the t999 without most of the hardware connected as a test?
I would not risk going through all that trouble. Not quite sure why you would honestly. You got a T999L right? Warranty replacement I assume? It's a superior device so why my not just use it as is?

1. I really want my data back.
2. I risk getting charged for out of warranty if they see it was rooted and flashed.
3. I'm going to sell it anyways, I got a note 3 because the S3 was on backorder and I couldn't do my job without a smartphone.
1. I'm sorry to say, but plan on this not being possible.
2. If it won't boot there is little chance you'd have to worry about it. They aren't going to go to extraordinary measures to check k the counter. Many people have claimed they sent a dead device back and never got charged, even though the counter had been tripped.
If you damage the good hardware you won't have much to sell.
I don't understand why you'd be willing to attempt to Frankenstein the two devices, but not at least attempt the debrick method I mentioned.
Also, you should be aware, even if it's something else, not a bad chip, it probably won't work. Much of the hardware is in fact different between the two. Different camera, different radios, different SoC....
I wish you luck if you decide to try this, but imo you are taking an awful big risk to try something that probably won't work anyway.
If your data is really that important maybe you should look into a data recovery service.
And in the future, back up back up back up!
Good luck whatever you decide. Let us know what happens.

Reading through the whole thread, I am going to agree with the Doc. Why would you go to all that trouble ? Nobody is going to be able to salvage that data, let alone snoop in it. You are best move on rather than Creating that Frankenstein Monster as Doc aptly put it.
The frankenphone would only have been for if the phone didn't work without the camera/speaker/etc connected. However when I disconnect everything from the main board except for the screen, I get the same behavior. So I guess the only thing I would want to test would be the touchscreen. I can't find any info on if the t999l touchscreen is compatible with the t999 board, but if anyone knows, that would be great.
I'm still going to try the microsd card debrick method, I was concentrating on the usb jig last night since that got me further than anything else so far.
As to why, I have pictures and whatnot on the phone that I want to save, as well as a bunch of work crap that will take me dozens of hours to recreate, plus a bunch of other personal stuff. If I can't get it, then I can't get it, but I want to exhaust my resources (within reason) before giving up.

Try JTAG instead of this if sdcard doesn't work. Most of t999l hardware is supposed to be identical. Since partition are potentially different. So phone may not boot. But you might be able to do adb. Good luck.
Actually it's the other way around. Partition layout is the same (though firmware incompatible) and hardware is definitely different.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
SD card didn't work, looking for jtag instructions.
EDIT: The more I look, the more it looks like a faulty power switch. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I have a way to short the power switch or something in a way that doesn't void the warranty...
Any help on this is appreciated.
Well, I think I'm completely screwed now.
I found this, http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...-help-black-screen-vibrating.html#post5262715 and somehow managed to lift the freaking solder pads.
What do you think the chances that they won't charge me a couple hundred dollars for "out of warranty service" are?
EDIT: good news: Confirmed that the cable that I lifted the solder pads on, which I assume is an antenna, probably isn't the problem (unplugged it on the t999l, and it works fine).
bad news: I also confirmed the power switch itself isn't the problem either. The left and right hand side aren't connected (according to my multimeter) when the button isn't pressed, but they are when it is.
Another edit: I unconfirmed the power switch part. It looks like the button only needs the slightest contact in order to short. I removed the power button from the case, surprisingly difficult since I saw people complaining about it falling out. Now the difficult part is making it think the switch is closed for long enough to not turn it on, but not long enough to turn it back off. I've gotten it to the boot logo, but I haven't gotten it to fully boot.
Yet another EDIT: the only way I can get it to turn on long enough to see the boot logo is by smacking it in my hand after it turns on, which seems to interrupt the constant button press signal. From the metering on the switch, it seems that even less contact is needed to turn on the phone than to signal the multimeter. Any suggestions as to somewhere to cut the power switch signal other than the power switch?

my problem is my phone does NOT vibrate when power button is pressed, it isnt doing ANYTHING at ALL, the red charging light only comes on when battery is left out and the phone is plugged in, light turns off after a minute or so of the battery being installed, to me it seems like less rom flash related, and more failure in the board, but im not good at this stuff so im probably wrong, i bought a verizon one (i535) for 50 bucks (pretty banged up touchscreen is cracked in several places i got it without a back cover, but it works,) to get me by but i miss my 4g on straight talk =( i wish i had just left it alone, it was clean just 1 crack in the touch screen wires ans such for lcdanddigitizer got cut by accient while trying to modify midframe for verizon board, i sure as hell cant afford the att version for a while 150-260 for a decent i747, is it possible that a JTAG service would be able to bring it to life or even one of those dongles to force recovery?

It could be a board failure but it happened right after you flashed the ROM which leads me to believe it is software related.
A dongle is not going to help since the phone won't even power up. A jtag service would be your best and quickest option. You should try and find a shop that will guarantee to revive the phone or you pay nothing.

Flashing an i9300 rom is guaranteed to hard brick the device and cause exactly what you described. If you follow the instructions in the thread linked in an above post it probably has a 90% chance of fixing it.
I am 99% certain it is not a hardware failure. Others have done the exact same thing and were able to fix it by using the instructions in that thread.

either way its gonna cost me a little cash, i dont have a 16 gig sd card, forgive me for being so noob but the sd card trick CAN work for my case?? i know for a fact i cant do anythingto my phone right now as it wont even power on, but if you BELIEVE it will work ill gove it a try
Unless you updated with the kk ota, you are probably on 4.3 firmware. I cannot guarantee it will work, but I believe the chances are pretty good that it will.
Just remember, if it doesn't work, dont give up on the first try. Many have had to run through the process several times before it would actually boot up again.
The only other tip I can think to give is to make sure you buy a decent sd card. It doesn't have to be top of the line, but there are tons of fake ones out there that would be less likely to work. If you can, try to buy one from an authorized dealer for whatever brand you are considering. This greatly reduces the chance of getting a bad card.

4.0.x was the last firmware, i never got to update it. i bought a PNY 16gb microSD HC class 4, it was 25 bucks at the local drug store, i was hoping for a class 6 - 10 but i believe it is a good quality card, maybe you would know better?
I won't lie, I am not a big fan of PNY, but as long as its the real thing, I think it should work. Class 6 or better is recommended, but it has worked on class 4 cards too. At this point, the only thing left to do is give it a shot. Good luck!
