Asus Zenpad 3S 10 - Device Reviews and Information

Just purchased this tablet (4GB RAM, 64GB storage) and am looking for the best place to find ROMs and hacks for this tablet.
Any ideas where to go?

Hey, bought this Tablet at release.
I think you wont see much (any) development for this device. to expansive and to unpopular for most of the people- And its MediaTek based. So let's hope for the best. Maybe we will get one or tow updates from ASUS... and then it's done.
One of the few Tablets out there, running Android and support an active pen... Was really hoping for Samsung, but it seems they haven't something in there sleeve....

I just recently got this tablet too and was hoping for some kind of XDA development.
Looking into methods of creating a custom TWRP.img for root access at least.

Any luck on TWRP.img yet?
Sent from my P027

I just bought one. Good god, I wish we could set the back and menu buttons to be lit at least while the screen is on. They're impossible to see in low-light...

SD(XC) cards don't work in this device
SDXC cards (anything greater than 32gb), have a max read rate of 1.8MB/s on my asus 3s (Z500M), so no HD movies without stuttering. SDHC (32gb or less) work just fine. I've tried to log a defect with asus, but their bug tracking system has been down for a week or so.
I tried two sandisk ultra SDXC 128GB cards
I tried one Samsung evo+ SDXC 128GB card
All average 1.8MB/s.
If you have an SDXC card, run the "A1 SD Bench" app and let us know your read speeds.

Any update here?

Same here. I hate having to switch between my Pixel to the ASUS launcher. Its even worse than Samsung launcher.

I always use Nova Launcher.

Ya. I should have researched the ZenPad more before I bought it. Its going back to Amazon and either getting a Pixel C or Surface. The key lags wayyyyy too much. I feel like I'm using a device 2 or 3 years old.

No problems here at all. In fact the best tablet I ever had, and I have had a lot of different tablets.

To each his own, I guess. I've had Samsung Note 3's(rooted), Samsung Note 10.1 2014(rooted), Google(ASUS manufacturer) Nexus 7 2013(rooted), various iPod's(jailbroken), various iPod touches(jailbroken), various iPhones(jailbroken and not), not to mention NUMEROUS android devices through the past 9 years. The Nexus 7 and iOS devices put the ZenPad to shame. And yes, I'm an Android guy.

I have and have had Toshiba, several Asus, Lenovo, etc. Sounds like you to tend to lean toward apple products though. Even so every company puts out a lemon every once in a while on every product line, or so it seems. You may have a lemon. Android 7 seems to make most of my devices run better, and I am patiently waiting for it on this device.

I always go Android if possible, I didn't list all of my Android phones I have scattered throughout the office. All my Apple devices, except for my iPad 1 in 2009 or 2010 and the iPod touch the same year, have been company mandated. Same with my computers, I have Windows and Linux on my personal computers but have to use Apple at work.
Anyway, I'll probably keep the Asus and hope for the best. I'm not hoping for a root for this device but maybe system updates will cure my problems. I just received a MoKo case and a ProCase for the Asus. I wish Poetic still made the strapback cases.
Have any of you had any experience with the Asus 3S and the Asus Z stylus? That's one the reasons I love the Samsung Note line, I love the active stylus.
Also, does your 3S just restart randomly? I'm assuming it's auto updates for the ZenUI updates but not sure. I've noticed it doing this around 5 times in the past week.

Z-Stylus works fine
I've bought this tablet two months ago. My last device was a Z300CL, killed by a cat named Elfriede. Z-Stylus works perfect with the new Z500M!

Custom ROM
Just ordered this tablet (got a great deal through B&H). Anyone know of a Nougat ROM?

I just bought one today too. However, unless you can root the device, I don't think you can flash a custom rom. Haven't seen any reliable posts from anyone about haveing successfully rooted this device. The only thing I need to have root for in my Android devices tends to be for Xposed modules so I can use forced full immersive mode & Close All apps. Anyone know if it's possible to do this on unrooted devices on MarshMallow? How does the Nvidia Shield K1 manage to do it without root?

Add me to the list of a new owner patiently waiting for some root/rom developements .
Tablets is perfect outside of having Asus custom FW.

I contacted Asus about upcomming updates and got the following responses (roughly translated from german):
Yes, an upgrade to Android 7 is planned for your device (I asked about the LTE version). Unfortunately, it has been delayed, but we expect it to be released at the end of the second quarter
Click to collapse
I then asked them about the non-LTE version, specifically because of this post which claims that the Z500 will never receive an update because the hardware is not supported by nougat.
We can't confirm this and cannot make any further comment on this false report. Unfortunately, we have no information on the release of Android 7 for your device.
Click to collapse
Note how they could immediately tell me when the update is comming for the LTE version but have no information about the non-LTE version. Perhaps it is not supported by Android 7 after all and they are still figuring out a way around this? I'm not an expert on this topic, someone more skilled than me might want to take a look on the post I linked above, I can provide translation if needed.
Still not sure whether to buy this or the S2. Similair prices, I like the ZenPad more for the hardware, but the S2 is well served with Custom Firmware and is thus sure to be up to date for many years...

Should I Get a Tab 3 10.1?

Hey guys, I currently have a MacBook Air 11, and I am looking for a tablet that I can use for when I don't wanna pull out my Macbook.
I am trying to spend less than $300. So I can get a refurbished Tab 3 10.1 for $225. However I can also get the first Galaxy Note 10.1(first edition) for $250.
I also can get an iPad 3rd gen for about $275.
So I am a bit conflicted. I just want something cheap that I can browse the internet on, play a few games, and use SmartGlass for my XboxOne
If look around get a nexus 10 for under 300 or nexus 7, if not just go with refurbished one

Would the Nexus 10 be better than the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1?
Depends what your users are going to be. Being you have a Mac, I say go with iPad (as much as I hate saying that). You already have apple asps and usernames that would make it easier for you.

Well I do have a Macbook, and an iPhone 5. But I am trying to get out of the apple ecosystem.
I'm going to get an android phone when my upgrade is up.
Basically my uses are going to be: Using while I'm in bed, on the couch to mainly surf the web, email, play a few games here and there, and use for SmartGlass for my Xbox. If it's anything more than that, I'll just use my Macbook.

I think it is wise to switch as long as you've done your research first. It can be expensive switching ecosystems, but Android tends to be much cheaper that iOS from what I've witnessed at least. But that is only part of what makes Android wonderful. As for the Tab 3 10.1, right now, I'm struggling because I wanted it to have user switching. That's something supported by Jellybean, but alas, Samsung has omitted it from this build. So I've been searching everywhere for custom ROMs but it seems that no one is developing for it because it runs on Intel and people aren't used to that structure just yet. All I can do it root is and tweak things here and there, but not what I want it to, so my point of view is a little skewed toward dislike.
If you have the funds, I would recommend the Nexus 10 32GB. Unfortunately, Nexus devices don't have microSD expansion like the Galaxy devices, but it has all the features it should and it would be easy to find custom development for it once you get bored with the stock UI.
TBH I personally would NOT recommend you buying the tab 3 10.1. I'd rather buy a Nexus 7 2013 or a Nexus 10 or a LG Gpad 8.3.
thsi is because of the silly Intel processor within the tab and Android not really cooperating with it.
You'll be better off running an ARM processor.
Just my 2 cents. Hope you enjoy whatever tablet you buy.
And as much as I dislike Windows 8 it works well on tablets. So that is also a good choice IMO
Good luck !

I have the tab 3 10.1 and it's a pretty good tablet. There's nothing so far about it that I don't like, BUT the resolution.

How would you say the tegra 3 compares to the intel chip in the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1?

Do you think it would be a good first device to dive into android with?
Thank you all for replying.
I had a dell streak 7 and it had a poor following for development, but I used it enough to know my next tab would be a 10 inch.(7 inch Too Small) I just got this tab 3, and it is killer. It doesn't have any custom ROMS that are drastically different that stock, Still...it is running the newest version of Jelly Bean, and really doesn't need "upgrading" It is so snappy and fast, I am tickled to death with it. I love the stock OS, and I figure by the time I get bored with it Cyanogen Mod will be available for it. Of course my view is also skewed because I was struggling with a Dell Streak 7 (slowpoke) before I got my Tab 3. I also enjoy (watching) the developers forum for this device, it's very entertaining because they discover new things about this tablet every day it seems. That stuff is mostly over my head right now, but I hope to learn more, so I can contribute in the future. Good luck with your choice...I just love mine.
I just bought a Tab 3 10.1 from Amazon last week. I also purchased a leather case with Bluetooth keyboard to go with it. The order total was 311 for me and well worth it. I also have a Galaxy s4.
I think if you are looking to switch to the Android ecosystem I would recommend setting up a Google account now if you do not have one already. The one thing I like about Google and the android environment is the built in cloud environment.
I am on my 4th Android phone and first tablet and have never had to transfer or backup contacts, settings or files. I log into the new device it automatically downloads the settings wallpaper and apps I use. The contacts are stored in the Google account on Google servers. I have seen even the most experienced iDevice users try to mimic this seamless integration but fall short (though not impossible).
My only advice in order to make sure you never have to back up files and pictures (with caution) is to utilize Google drive if you do not already.
When I first moved to Android from Blackberry the selling point was that my contacts are stored in my Google account. Saved my life many times.

Well guys, I went to BestBuy to check out the tablets.
I looked at the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 and 10.1, Note 8.0 and 10.1 and the Nexus 7.
The two tabs seemed a bit sluggish when getting in and out of apps, and the load times in chrome were a little slower compared to the Notes.
The Note 10.1 is the perfect device for me, I absolutely loved it, but it's way out of my price range. But I also loved the Note 8.0.
The Nexus 7 seemed nice too, but it was in some demo mode so I couldn't actually open apps and such.
How does the Note 8.0 compare to the Nexus 7? At this point I think I like the Note 8.0 more, purely based on form factor.
Edit: How much faster is the Note 8.0 than the Tab 3?
Also how does the Note 8.0 compare to the original Note 10.1?
As far as I am concerned NO MORE SAMSUNG. Samsung just doesn't support…update the system on any of their tabs. I am selling my Galaxy 10.1 note today and getting something else. Sold my S4 and got a nexus 5 and am very happy.

Well that is interesting.
If you had to recommend me a tablet, what would you recommend? Other than the Nexus 7.
I'd Recommend the LG Gpad 8.3 Google Play Edition as it has a slightly bigger screen.
I do NOT recommend Samsung devices as they have a CRAP LOAD of bloatware installed. Quite a few of those things run constantly using up RAM/CPU and eating battery life and in return, they give nothing.
I'd rather have an AOSP based ROM without the 'goodies' than a stock ROM with them.
I've owned 4 samsung devices so I think I can speak for them
This is my skightly skewed opinion. you should decide what you buy. We are just giving you advice
MY advice would be to purchase a google play edition device/ Nexus device as I find them the best in terms of everything

Well maybe I should just get the Nexus 7.
I can't seem to find a Google Play G Pad in my price range :/
Did you get the Nexus 7? I was going to until I found that some of the 2013 model had screen/hardware and touchscreen issues. My wife has the gtab 2 10.1 which I put cm 4.3 and a custom overclocked kernal on and it runs smooth and quick. After using it a while I wanted something a bit smaller for myself and settled on the gtab 3 8.0. I like the size much better and the screen is plenty big and bright. It is quick and responsive with the stock rom. There is some development happening for it including an overclocked kernal and I am waiting patiently for a stable rom.
If you bought the Nexus, let us know how it is. I hope it's one of the good ones.

Don´t do the same mistake we did !
There may be an update to KitKat but it would be the last update. (ASUS releases much more updates than Samsung)
And building custom ROMs for the 10.1 variant, is (at this time) unpossible because of the Intel chipset.
If you don´t care about these aspects, it´s still a powerfull tablet for working with documents or watching streams, movies.

Was, why did you bother even asking the question if the Tab 3 was worth the purchase of you had already purchased it. Yes, the Tab 3 was a mistake, not only is this tablet very laggy do to TouchWiz not being optimized for x86 (should have given you hint when they haven't released another model with this cpu as of yet) but the system only leaves 300mb of memory available to apps. Samsung has been promising Kit Kat for ever and at this point it looks like it will never happen, not only that but the custom ROMs are few to none, with most being abandoned. Sell this piece of crap and my suggestion, would be to never buy another midtier Samsung tablet again. They just don't care, once they release a tablet it's forgotten and layed to the side for the next 20 Samsung released that week. Even the new Tab 4 is a waste of money, the Tab 4 should have been what the Tab 3 was, so it's already obsolete, their just fast-food tablets.
If you check out the general forum the majority of threads are for the 7 inch model, why anyone in their right mind would buy such a piece of garbage is beyond me but you know it's bad when Samsung's cheapest model gets updated before the higher end model and I use that term lightly.
Spend a little money and buy something decent, checkout some of the new Windows 8 tablets they are very good and are reasonably priced.

Is recommendable buy the N7 2013 now?

Hi everyone
I know that forums have many forums about this but i want advices more specific.
Well, i want to buy a Nexus 7 2013 tablet because i consider that has a good specs for the price (less than $200) (could be my first Nexus device), searching i founded the posibility to buy one not used on eBay (new, apparently).
I read and investigate more, and i founded two big questions.
1. I know that google stopped the suport (stuck on 5.1.1), also i found some Marshmallow ROMs here, works well and stable? is complicated to make all the process (bootloader, recovery, root, flashing)?
2. A few months ago i look in the web about a "Sudden Death" that occurs in lollipop, does that solution? i don´t have official support in my country for repairs, therefore i think is a big risk for me. Installing a custom Marshmallow ROMs avoid the problem?
Thanks for reading

You're mistaken. Google officially updated the N7 2013 and LTE model to Marshmallow.
See for yourself.
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
These days, depending on condition, you can find a Nexus 7 2013 Wi-Fi for about $100-130 US. I personally wouldn't speed more than a $100 for a used Nexus 7 2013.
Bootloader unlocking, rooting, and flashing roms is a pretty simple thing to do on a Nexus device. If you have trouble, you can always read the many guides provided on these forums.
My N7 2013 has good days and bad days. Depending on the rom/kernel you use, it can still be a great tablet. The screen is still fantastic too. But $200 is too much for sure.
I would say yes for sure. Just make sure you buy a good one. There's a lot of faulty Nexus 7 out there.
$200 is too much
I'd recommend the Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 at this point. I just finally got mine recently and the extra speed and battery life are well worth it. And it is only $200, and with Nvidia's frequent updates, its nearly a nexus.
Ditto about the price. I bought mine used with case & charger for $90.00.
My N7-2013 got official OTA 6.0 update and went into bootloop. Then I installed CM ROM and never looked back.

I do not trust much in Nvidia, after having a Sony with Tegra 2 i would not use portable devices with chipsets Nvidia again
I had a N7 2013 when it was released , then I sold it for an iPad. Bad choice . Went back to N7 and still loving it . Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 2013 are by far the best devices created . I got it for $105 , and it was in 10/10 mint condition. GO FOR IT
I think it still is the best 7 inch tablet out there. It has an excellent screen. I use it for reading, for browing, for watching videos and it is perfect. Sometimes i never use my desktop the whole day. Marshmallow update is pretty good but propably the last major update. But surely xda developers will give it the N version of Android. I have mine with a magnetic case which is very convenient. And also there are some good custom roms if you dont want to stay to the official like PureNexus which is extremely good, cm, omni and others.

Why there is low development?

Hi!
I'm considering buying this amazing tablet for university, taking profit of the developer discount. However, as the time passes by, doesn't seem to have more than two or three ROMs, what now may not be necessary but in a nearly future with no Google updates, the community is the most important support[emoji25]
So I want to know if there is any reason for that, if it is all about bootloader or all about the price
Thanks[emoji3]

Near future? There's going to be at least another 18 or so months of support for the Pixel C...how exactly is that near future? Also, with Android N we're getting alphas straight from Google's dev department so we're already on the bleeding edge as it is!

As the previous post said, Google will support this tablet for a good deal longer and is supporting it currently with bleeding-edge updates. Relative to other tablets released this year, there is as much (if not more) development here as on any other tablet. But a declining interest in Android tablets seems to be a general trend (especially compared to 2 or 3 years ago). Phones are where most of the custom rom activity is these days. Now that convertible chromebooks like the Asus Chromebook Flip will be able run Android apps (starting in June), I wouldn't be surprised if the Android tablet ecosystem continues to shrink. After all, the Pixel C was originally intended to be a Chrome OS device.
That said, Google products still get a lot of developer activity. The Pixel C seems to have been hindered initially by the quality control problems (I gave up on the Pixel C after receiving two defective tablets in a row) and the Chrome OS bootloader, which made rooting, twrp, etc. more of a challenge. Once TWRP support is solid, I would expect more custom rom development.

Yes but comparing with smartphones I don't see a high interest of developers to help creating ROMs and I thought it could be because of the chrome recovery. But as you have show me, the development is even bigger than other tablets?
That's another question (which kind of device would fit better to me) with the new support of play store at Chromebooks, because I would like a computer interface in some occasions for better productivity but as the multiwindow support is going to improve it, I think I'm finally buying the pixel c and not a laptop [emoji122]
Thanks for answering

Yeah but after that?? A Nexus device has 18 guaranteed updates but a tablet should be used 3 years or so
However I love so much this tablet and I will finally buy it

Tablets never have a large development following, you'd be lucky to have two or three ROMs for it, we just got Dirty Unicorns and Omni so I'd say were pretty good.

I think part of the problem was not having support for SuperSU, which was only just updated for Pixel C a couple of weeks ago. Give it a little time and hopefully we'll see some new stuff.
Also don't forget phones are handed to people without an upfront cost, making them far more accessible, this tablet isnt exactly priced in the range of a Nvidia K1 or Nexus 7 which wont be helping matters either.
I had an Onda v919 Air CH before this, and I do serious miss Windows 10, however to me, the Pixel does everything I need it to do, it's travelled across the world with me, kept me entertained and allowed me to view pics off my dSLR, make quick edits and etc. it's awesome for that, but I'm being realistic with myself, I don't expect this to turn into a desktop replacement, we just need N to be stabilised and well have a competent tablet in our hands which will hopefully last for a couple of years!
That's also true, most good tablets are at least half a grand.

Nope, we've had root for a while already (2-4 months), chainfire's method just makes it easier, and now Cheep doesn't have to worry about maintaining it. You guys gotta remember that this tablet hasn't even been out for 6 months yet.

any similar phones out there?

I've been on a year-long hunt for a new phone SPRINT compatible, and they all seem like downgrades. here's my checklist of features and how important they are (10) or aren't (1) to me:
1. unlocked / unlockable bootloader WITHOUT need for exploits: 10
2. sdcard slot: 10
3. user replaceable battery: 9
4. 3gb+ ram: 9
5. 2.4 ghz or faster, quadcore or SYNCHRONOUS octa: 8
6. finger print reader: 7
7. infrared blaster: 6
8. likely to OFFICIALLY receive android 8.0 update: 6
9. optical stabilized camera: 5
10. quick charge 2.0 or better: 7
95% off all devices ever since my contract expired December 1st last year either fail at Sprint network compatibility, or bootloader. over time I'm gradually accepting defeat on user replaceable batteries ;(
closest candidate for me is the lg v20 but there's virtually no breakthrough features on it to justify a 2 year "upgrade" to it from the note 4
I had an s5, bought a used note 4 about 8 months ago. (I've been using smart phones for about 15 years, since the ppc6700)
Had an upgrade available, was in the same boat. Purchased a g6 and sold my note. I sold my g6 yesterday and bought another used note.
Moral of the story?
If your current model makes you happy and there isn't a new phone that will make you more happy... Perhaps it's time to keep what you have. The v20 is nice, but without a home button... How much of an upgrade is it really? What will it really do that you can't do now? Perhaps complete a task in 7/10ths of a second faster?
Save your money. I'll be sticking with the note 4 for a long time. In the evolution of cell phone technology, the note 4 was a major pivot point. I don't see anything out there that doesn't include disgusting compromises.
I do wish the note 4 was waterproof, but I'll live. Heck... I could buy several replacements (if I damaged it) for less money then I would spend on a new phone.

Great phone. Use to connect to my clients Servers to do maintenance and watch live TV with my Sling unit way, way before this was a thing.

I remember coworkers (nicely) mocking me for using it. 'why would anyone want a big phone!' - couple of years later they all had their phablets.
Unfortunately, there is no upgrade that meets your requirements. When I broke my Note 4, I went with the Note Edge. Phone sucks compared to the regular note. I researched the V20, G6, G5. None of the current phones do what I want them to do. I almost got the V20, but xposed not being available for Nougat led me to get another Note 4. I think I'll be using Note 4's for the forseeable future. This has been by far my favorite phone, so I'm not complaining.
the LGV20 imo is the true successor to the note 4
made the jump 2 months ago and loving it
I refuse to buy a phone without an interchangeable battery......im a heavy user so stock batteries suck, I need my extended batteries
