hi
i'm willing to upgrade my current 3 years old note 8 , i'm thinking in picking this m2 but i'm not sure if i should go for it or should i go for a samsung tab s2 or ipad mini 2/3 with 4:3 aspect ratio , i mainly use my tab to watch movies so please share ur opinion depending on that.
also please mention the screen on time u are able to get on this device
I think u should forget M2 tablet, look at the new M3 instead.

Isn't the M3 8 inches, the M2 is 10..?
EDIT - Ignore me, the M2 comes in 8 and 10 inch versions... duuhh... I don't usually bother looking at 8" and under, useless to me...
Oh well.
I'm getting new one for only 222$

Wow, so you'll work on cm / LineageOS for this device now? Epic if you do, there's sources released for this device too
I've had this tab for a week now, and so far I've been really pleased, the battery life is great because Huawei has a built-in battery saver mod that closes almost all apps and processes when the screen is off, the standby drain is almost nonexistent. I upgraded from an iPad Mini 2, and I'm really loving the bigger screen, I don't play any graphically intensive games, so the performance is more than enough for me too. The screen is also very good for an LCD panel, the colors are vibrant and blacks are black
Only 2 cons I've found so far is that the display is a bit warm-toned, this doesn't bother me because you can adjust the color temperature from the settings under display (I think the adjusting feature is there for the exact reason). The other con is that the build quality on the displays part is not the best, if I'm holding the tablet up, the display can be a little bit detached from the body and make a small sound when pressed on to, meaning the attachment is not perfect at certain points
But otherwise the build quality is great, and the price to value ratio is one of the best ever in my opinion, would recommend this to anyone who uses a tablet for media usage and light gaming :good:
But the
I,ve had mine for 6 months, excellent if a little-limited power wise (CPU/mem) Screen on time for browsing is for me 8+ hours & easily 6 for 720p video streamed over wifi & a little longer if stored on the tab. Screen is bright/clear and very good. Sound is awesome for a 10" tab. I got this to use alongside my old Nexus 10.
You're better off buying the Mediapad X2 as it has a much smaller footprint.
HUAWEI MediaPad M2 8.0 device just crap, I hope no one will ever buy that kind of crap. Nothing works, does not updates.
I went for a tab s2 , every thing is going good except it's speaker quality , I'm still getting used to it's 4:3 aspect ratio but I still prefer my old note 8 16:9 aspect ratio

I love my 2 month old tab pro 8.4, love its pixel density and speed
Does the tab s has a better pixel density? Should I switch to the 10.5
Sent from my SM-T320 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Same pixel density as Pro (359). Differences are S has super AMOLED screen, 32gb storage, 3gb RAM and Exynos chips.
IDK......not enough of an upgrade to make me spend the cash.
I asked myself the same question. The Tab S doesn't offer anything new that I want, and I dislike how the back side looks. I just want to enjoy the excellent device that I already have. I say get what you think will satisfy you in the long run, or else you will fall into the trap of upgrading to a new tablet every 2-3 months. =/

A few people in another thread who have seen the S model have said that the screen did not look noticeably better than the Pro.
Does s model AMOLED share subpixels like they do on my old galaxy s4? Because that caused letters on screen to have fuzzy little hair.

Rumor has it that it does use subpixels. It's supposedly a AMOLED, not Super AMOLED.
I've always preferred LCD so will be sticking with my Tab Pro 10.1. Though, I'll check out the Tab S today at Best Buy. I hear they have an instore price of $249 on the Tab Pro 8.4. If true, that's one hell of a price for a phenomenal tablet.

Tab S 8.4 is confirmed (at least somewhat, based on the following link - and I've seen it stated as pentile on other websites) to be a pentile display (subpixels); while the Tab S 10.4 is RGB stripe: http://www.anandtech.com/show/8168/samsungs-galaxy-tab-s-105-84-hands-on-with-samsungs-66mm-thin-tablets
Reviews around the web, and opinions on XDA I've read say the AMOLED is not significantly better or worse than the LCD on the Tab Pro models, just "different". Colors are a tad over-saturated, while blacks are a bit more true. If you like/dislike the AMOLED displays on the Samsung phones, your opinion will likely be the same for the Tab S.
Aside from the increased storage and RAM, I don't see this as much of an upgrade. And certainly not willing to buy another device after 2 months.
A bit questionable for Samsung to be releasing such similar devices so close together. I suppose choices are always good. But it gets to the point where they are just over-saturating the market (and maybe that is the intent?) and confusing the customer.

Me too... based on Anand's tests the Tab S has better battery life for video playback than any other tablet currently out including the mighty IPad Air.
I have the Tab Pro and like it as well but the new device rocks with battery life.
I'd like to see application testing though. Video playback is definitely of value (I travel and watch videos) but I rarely spend hours on the tablet for internet use (that's what my computers are for).
However I do read a lot on my tablet and it would be interesting to see how long it lasts compared to the Tab Pro.

Was a bit intrigued by the comments on battery life, and read the review. Hardly seems like an objective test. The reviewer states that they used a movie with lots of dark scenes which greatly favors the AMOLED screen. So this doesn't tell you much of anything . . . unless you only watch dark movies all the time!
Would have been nice to see more data points, and for various movies to be played.

Where are you seeing double the battery time? Anandtech is showing 50% more for video playback (15 hours versus 10) and less time for internet browsing.
Hi Guys,
My 2012 Nexus 10 is showing its age and I am desperate for a new tablet. I waited so long for Galaxy Tab S2, but I am kinda disappointed with its spec. old 5433 SoC and 4:3 screen with downgraded ppi and resolution ! so I am thinking about Galaxy Tab S, what do you think about it after lollipop update ? I heard many users complained about its lags and underpowered SoC, would you recommend it ? also how is the custom ROM community for it ? I can see there are a couple custom ROMs but are there stable enough to for daily usage ? I remember exynos had very limited developer support, so there was not many great ROMs for exynos devices out there, what do you think ? Galaxy Tab S or S2 ?
The S1 is a masterpiece the S2 is a frankenstein monster, 4:3 spit, virtually mono sound spit, so looks plain jane spit, no camera flash spit, no if-red spit, portrait design spit, I though it was an Galaxy Tab A by the photo`s it looks so cheap.
Exynos version has loads of rom`s, snapdragon version hardly any, If you want stability stick to kitkat, if your fine with flashing have fun with different roms.
John
But what about the lags and stutters on kitkat ? I heard lollipop fixed that. is it true ?
I have had no lag or stutter on my 10.5" kitkat , I had it running continuously for 160 days, I never shut it down or restarted it, I only did a restart to re-calibrate my battery but i had no problems with the battery, it was just maintenance.
But i am not a gamer, I mostly watch video`s and browse the internet for at least an hour every day, but white on an oled display eats the battery, if you do a lot of browsing use night mode or get an lcd tablet.
John.

hmm. hard question. I personally would not get either right now. The s2 looks like a step backwards in the key areas, the darn screen.
the s has the lovely screen, but unless you can get a decent deal, its too long in the tooth to spend out a lot for.
its so irritating as there are no tabs which tick all the boxes. the experia z3 is good, but the res is lower, but everything else is up to speed.
dont get me wrong, I really do like my tablet, but who knows what is coming out in the next few months, or will be announced. I hope finally there is something which is progress in all areas.
The Tab S2 has a lower resolution screen than the Tab S (both resolution AND PPI), a significantly smaller battery and a marginally upgraded processor.
I'd wait for the true successor to the Tab S - which will likely a more upmarket SAMOLED tablet, priced higher than the Tab S with a full metal body (Like the Galaxy Tab A) and more of a competitor for the iPad.
I prefer plastic to metal, metal is cold and when bent or dented it does not spring back like plastic also it blocks radio waves so you have to have non metal sections to let the waves in and out, Samsung are masters of durable plastic, you can bend the battery cover of their phones almost in two and it will spring back without any damage try that with metal.
John
So I bought my Tab S around a month ago and I have to say I'm in love with it! After seeing the specs of the Tab S 2 I knew straight away the device for me.
The tab s in my opinion tick pretty much every box the only thing I wish was better is the GPU for gaming (not that it plays games badly - they play well enough) but I can be quite picky and if I'm not getting the max FPS from a game I feel upset! Everything else on the tablet is perfect and I'm the kind of chap that sells his devices every couple of months for the latest better version but this is the first device I've come across that I've not even looked at replacing, well worth the £300 I spent for it. The xperia z4 tablet is now out and it's specs are majorly impressive but it's thick bezels I think make it an ugly design, I love the thin sides of the Tab S, another tablet I've been looking at is the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 but again after seeing it in the shop I think it's quite ugly and put a Bluetooth keyboard, mouse and hancom fine with my tab s and it's replaced my laptop, which I'm selling on eBay at the moment as it hasn't been used since I bought my tablet.
I'm a network manager at a school and have used my Tab S for a hell of a lot including connecting to multiple servers and writing 30 page policies. It's a great little device.
I upgraded to Lollipop but I'm using IronRom instead of stock and I have to say it's very stable and very fast. No lag. On antutu I got around the 4100 mark with all my GPU and CPU over locked it's just as powerful as an S5 phone. I'd recommend it to anyone and already multiple family members and the girlfriend have ordered one after seeing mine.
Sorry this was long but I hope it helped
Comes down to a few questions:
Do you value performance. The Exnos 5420 is a 2 year old processor. The 5433/7410 is a 1 year old processor (though it is a 20nn version of the 7420 in the S6)
Do you value battery life. The Tab S2 8.0 has a battery that is 20% smaller than the original tab. It may be that the 20nn processor and smaller newer screen are more efficient but I don't expect better battery life.
Do you value longevity/updates: The Tab S2 is a year newer so it will have its updates discontinued later than the Tab S.
Does display ratio matter to you: If you mostly read, the Tab S2 may be a dream come true. If you mostly watch videos, it's a disaster.
Do you value internal storage: Other than a best buy limited edition model, the Tab S has 16gb storage. The S2 has 32GB.
It seems like the Tab S2 is a Galaxy Note 4 (international) turned into a tablet. The Tab S was the Galaxy Note 3 (international) turned into a tablet.
This is a tough question for me. I re-bought the Tab S 8.4 for 190 (ridiculous deal best buy had a few months ago) after leaving it late last year to try other tablets (The Xperia Z3 Tablet and the Venue 7840). I also bought the Tab S 8.4 on day 1 last year (great deal, $350 for the tablet, Samsung cover, and 16gb sd card) to replace my Tab Pro 8.4 that I bought on day 1. I'm leaning towards getting it if the same deal is in play.
I have asked basic maths for help:
smaller side of t800 is 5.87 inch and of t810 is 5.82 inch...
So I do not see any advantage for browsing in new generation...

Unfortunately yes he is right here as the Tab S processor is a year older, though I find it very quick and non-laggy when using IronRom on lollipop. As stated above the one thing I'd change is GPU performance but remember you always have over clocking when you root!

Best thing about android is that you can flash a custom ROM so updates never bother me as I can always flash a latest build of Cyanogenmod if needs be.

I have 16GB internal storage on my Tab S including a 128GB memory card. Everything including apps is stored on my memory card thanks to the app "foldermount" you must be rooted though, I don't think the Tab S 2 has expandable storage but I could be wrong.
Good Point the S1 beats the S2 in both horizontal and vertical resolution, so the S2 is not really better for browsing, though you have to turn the S1 10.5" to portrait mode as it`s an landscape tablet while the S1 8.4" is an portrait style already.

Thank you all for your responses and opinions, I guess I would go for a Galaxy Tab S. but I will wait until S2 is released so I can get a good deal. I expect galaxy tab s gets a discount when s2 is released.
S1 - just bought my third for the household, was holding out for the S2 but so glad i did not wait for a iPad Air copy.
This morning I read that the S2 comes with Android 5.0.2 and started to laugh. Seriously 5.1.1 has been out for months including on a few Samsung devices. At the glacial pace that Samsung updates their tablet OS versions Android M will have been out for at least three months before the S2 gets v5.1.1, what a joke.
That on top of an older processor makes you wonder why they even bothered. I'm very happy to have bought my S 10.5 at almost $70 less retail, a few months ago, rather than this laughable new flagship tablet. Samsung's advantage of the best screen technology in the industry is getting sabotaged by very odd engineering decisions. It seems like the tablet division is run by their B team.

Frankly speaking, I would never buy an S2 over the Tab S. At the moment on the Tab S you can have Lollipop, Xposed, custom kernels with F2FS, and the tablet flies, literally.

Well, the advantage is that is almost the same viewing area but in a smaller and lighter package. Also, much more natural than the awkwardness that 16:10 is in portrait on such a large tablet as the tab S IMO. YMMV.

That video sure did nothing to change my mind that the S2 is a step backward. Especially the comparison of reading the magazine which showed nothing visually while the video playback did demonstrate the smaller picture and unused screen black bars. Is Samsung going to pronounce, to video watchers, that the black bars on video playback is actually a way to extend your battery life? Which maybe needed as the thinner design and aspect ratio has reduced overall battery size. It is going to be tough to polish a turd and sell it at a flag ship price.
After reading the S2 details I'm still amazed that the OS is v5.0.2 and it does not have the same processor that the S6 phone uses. What were they thinking?

Dear XDA
thanks for reading. I saw a similar post regarding whether to buy the Tab S4. I am an android fan, switched from IOS a few years ago. I have S9 phone, Tab A tablet, and want to upgrade to a better samsung tablet now.
My question is... based on rumors, pipeline, etc, should I get the Tab S4 (699CHF currently in Switzerland for LTE version), or wait for the new tablet (will there be one from samsung?) since I have a current one that is still functional?
Thank you so much
Cheers
gp
Which version of the Tab A do you have, 10.1 or the newer 10.5? The 10.1 will have physical buttons.
The main differences would be improved performance and the amoled display. A little lighter maybe and better materials\construction?
I would have upgraded from my Tab S 10.1 now, I use it 90% for watching videos, but decided to wait while the issues with HDR playback fixed.
Also, not happy the mounting holes for cases have been dropped, I don't like the way a case will need to wrap around the edges to attach. Because the back is glass not using a case isn't an option either, maybe a skin will work.

it's the 10.1 with physical buttons, the bargain one.
When you say "I would have upgraded from my Tab s 10.1..." do you mean that you didn't?
Thank you
Still have the Tab S 10.1. I'm using a lightweight 7.1 ROM with Viper4Android to boost and tweak the audio. In combination with MX Player it's a very capable device for playing movies and I still get 6+ hours screen on time.
I skipped the Tab S2 and S3 due to 4:3 screen ratio and was excited when the S4 was released but will wait until better HDR playback support.
It doesn't look like the Tab S5 isn't coming out this year, at least from what I've read. They tend to keep the flagship tablets a bit longer than their phones. The Tab S4 is worth it, in my opinion. I have the LTE version through Tmobile. I wish they had bumped up the entry-level storage but 64 GB is still more than enough, especially since I have the 512 GB Note 9 and my main device.
Don't wait, buy a S4 on sale or second hand. Let's get realistic. Android Tablets are endangered, almost extincted. The next product will be either under ChromeOS or won't be at all.
It's a good product and users seems happy with it (it was not the case of Tab S3). It was too expensive when release but now, it's half the price of an Ipad Pro 11 but it's not half of its quality an feature.

is your note 10 on 1080p or 1440p? and also what is note 9 on?
I was thinking that also. I was watching the same movie Endgame on both at the same time. The note 9 seems slightly better. Adaptive display mode is not available on the note 10 only vivid. Both phones were the unlocked version.
If you have the note 10 and not the PLUS, they YES your note 9 has a better, higher Res screen. Note 10 is only 1080p.
yeah the 10+ is superior to the 9 side by side if you have it setto WQHD+ out of the box it's only set to WHD+, if you are on the standard 10 it's only a 1080 screen so it is just a worse screen, the 10+ is the upgrade from the 9, the standard 10 is a budget model.

Yes I just got mine and I think this is something a lot of people will stumble over. You ave to change the resolution to WQHD+ otherwise you're running 1080p on a native 1440p screen(Never Never Never do this).. That said this was true on the note 8 ad note 9 as well.

makes sense in a way, but would be better if it popped up as an option with reasoning during setup, then people would actually be aware of the setting.
I used to be one of those guys that compare and nitpick about pixels, sharpness, color etc. I've since realized that my eyes will get used to whatever device I'm using after a week. At the most after 3 weeks. But to chime in. I can't tell much difference with my note 9 and note 10 .

The average person probably doesn't know what WQHD+ is so it makes sense for it to ship at the lower resolution.

Or people could just go exploring. If it popped up every single option that could be missed by a user the Samsung UI would be way more over bearing than it already is.
Everything is a click away and there is also a manual packed inside.
I'd roll the dice that the vast majority of the consumer market that doesn't know what an XDA is ain't stressing this. Hell how many people don't even bother changing their wallpaper.
How does WQHD+ affect battery life? I'm currently on FHD+ but interested in knowing how much less battery life I'd get.

Last year i heard about m20x very late.
I had my old Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra since 2016 and heard about Mi Max 3 which i bought, but it had a fake rom and i sold it after 1 month.
Then i bought the Samsung Note 8, but sold it again after 1 week, it was all to tiny for me, really... yes.
Then i bought the Honor 8X Max and around same time the Honor Note 10 came to, i bought this to and sold the 8xm again [emoji1787]. I keep the N10 for around 3 month, i really loves it and thheennnnn i heard about my baby Mate 20X L29 (636), then i bought this and one of my daughters got the N10.
But this year no Mi Max 4 and around Honor 9X Max and Honor Note 11, they will not come before next year, because they release them every second year only, so maybe it will be Honor 10X Max and Honor Note 12 instead i think.
So im happy they will release a M30X and even with a larger display, thats i like a lot.
I still dream of a Mate X phone with 16:9 format 6,8 inch in 16:9 could give us a hell of a phone... I will keep on dreaming LOL.

Now the bad news if true

Don't jump to conclusions. YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7vPJYhtbAo looks more like list of wishes and speculations to me than firm confirmation of Mate 30X launch. On the other side China and the US are still in harsh trading negotiations. I think it's too early to say there will be no Google for Mate 30.

I use Google my self, but to be honest... I would love to try Harmony OS and i will find my self some other stuff mail prg etc etc.
So for me this could be good, Android not that exciting anymore, only minor updates every time a new version comes. And iOS, been there done that.
Its NASTY as we say these days in Denmark [emoji1787][emoji23]

Here they say it will have Android but without the Google apps.
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...unch-under-cloud-of-android-ban-idUSKCN1VI240
Huawei will be doing fine with Harmony OS. Who needs google apps when you can have all the Chinese alternative apps. No youtube? Use Youku. No Google search? Use Baidu. No gmail? Use QQ mail.
Frankly, the Mate 20 X is the best of a bad bunch, hardware wise.
The *quality* of the hardware is outstanding. Screen quality, camera quality, performance, build quality etc etc.
However the form factor is crap. All these tall devices waste so much screen area. They're crap for browsing. Crap for productivity. Crap for videos and photos.
At 7.2", the screen has 1.5mm less width than my 6.6" Honor Note 8, and about 16mm more height.
Guess what's more useful in 99% of use cases, and easier to use without thumb gymnastics? The extra width, not the extra height.
For all intents and purposes, the screen feels marginally smaller than my HN8, and definitely more awkward to use.
If a 30 X does appear. I can't possibly imagine it being less than 19.5:9 (20 X is 18.5:9), because they want as big a gulf as possible between normal handsets and the Mate X (and its coming successors). They want you to pay through the nose for usable screen width, and the marketing guys love these nominally diagonally large screen measurements that narrow aspect ones have.
19.5:9 at probably 7.4-7.5" inches ... have fun with that.

I tried making a dummy for the phone to compare the size to my note 5 and I would definitely take 7.4 or 7.5 with more smart aspect like you mentioned, either way this kind of device is for big size phablets fanatics like us, we know what we want and can handle it.
I am a big fan of mate 20X, despite of the notch on the 30x as rumours shows, i'll be waiting for the boss.....

I'd happily take a 7.5-8" device in 16:9 16:10, as you'd actually be getting useful screen area. Even if it was very difficult to fully operate one handed.
Over 7" at 19.5:9 (or even worse) ... it's just pointless. You have huge areas of unused or poorly utilised screen area, and a really un-ergonomic device - unless you have a freakishly long thumb.

I am all in for a bug screen that's well used, I already don't care for one handed use bc I want big so I won't complain about sth I already know!
I totally get it about the aspect ratio.

I didn't buy the mate 20 x to wait and see if there is a mate 30x.
I don't want too much changes but somethings could get better like higher resolution for more clarity, better video quality / cam etc, maybe a hole bunch camera on the top left side to minimize the distraction etc or even in the middle like the note, an even bigger battery if possible ( 5000 is still awesome) 8 gigs of ram to be standard across all versions with 256 gigs.
I hope they take the pen serious this time... I love love loved the Mate 20 X but I'm being forced to consider the Note 10 because of the lack of pen functionality. Doesn't work near screen edge, short battery, can't use while charging, can't use when dead, button is useless, tip is tacky and lacks feedback, no real software support, etc. I would love to go Huawei again if they put more thought into the pen.

Totally agree with you on the pen, right now it does feel just like any other stylus etc
