Defective Pixel XL or Defective Android 7.1? - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

I have a huge problem with my new Pixel XL. I have had it for 3 days now, and each night I plug it into a wall outlet. When I wake up in the morning, my phone's screen is black, the device is noticeably warm, and my alarm clock never goes off!
This morning though, I was able to grab a logcat (see attached). I just got up a bit ago (late, because my f**king alarm did not go off again), so I'm going to start grep'ing through it to try and find a root cause.
I had somewhat similar issues with my Nexus 6P - I feel like the hardware was shot on it though, the only thing that I am doing that is probably "different" from most folks is that I probably have more accounts on on my phone. I did catch something in logcat that showed that the Pixel was freaking out because of too many log messages :s
Any ideas?

Have you made a factory reset?

I did one when I bought the phone and I am actually doing one right now! This reset has been going for like 10 minutes though!!!
I wonder what the deal is? Maybe wiping each file on the phone individually (since N introduces file-level encryption now?).
Biting my nails waiting for something to happen

Meh, I switched to the Recovery Mode based factory reset so I can at least see things happen :|

Use alarm clock extreme + timer and your issues will stop with the Alarm not going off. What app are you using by the way? I'm assuming the app is not made to wake the phone properly from doze mode which is common with the new Android Os's.

I'm using the stock clock app's alarm clock, which hasn't ever failed me before. I shouldn't have to install a 3rd party app just to get my alarm to go off though!
So earlier today, I attempted a factory reset from the settings menu. It appeared to start wiping the phone, but it hung on the Google splash screen with the 4 bouncing balls. I let it run for probably 30 mins - I drove to the store, ran some errands, came back and there didn't appear to be any progress.
Being the Linux freak that I am, I wanted to see what was going on under the hood, I couldn't get a shell over adb so I rebooted the phone and initiated a factory reset from the stock recovery. This time, i watched it wipe the phone in a matter of a minute or so. I then re-flashed the stock image and re-setup the phone. So far so good, but we'll see if it s**ts itself again tonight. If it does, I'm going to be seriously pissed, because for $1K my phone should "just work".

I assumed you were using third party my bad. Yeah sounds like you had an issue with the os to me then. Good luck sir!

Is the phone stock, modded, rooted? Just interested to know.

SO this crash DEFINITELY seems to happen overnight, everytime when I enable Do Not Disturb! My phone just takes takes a crap in the middle of the night. This sucks!!!

HTC One X Messaging Issues

Hi guys, this problem just started to occur. I heard a notification sound from my phone which should have been the email tone but I was busy so i didn't check it. I noticed the sound was a little cut off at the end though. Then almost immediately afterwards, I got the sound for a new SMS. Then I checked my phone but I couldn't see any emails from before although there was a new SMS. When I tried to open the message, it would go into the Messaging app but then it would get stuck on a loading screen when I try to actually enter the message. When I go back to the main messaging screen, I can still see all my past messages, but each time I try to go into one, it'd get stuck on the loading screen. Eventually after maybe 3 minutes it finally went into the newest message i got, but when i tried to send a reply it would act like nothing's happened. The message i typed just disappeared. When I went back to the main messaging screen, I was able to see my message in the previews, but when i go back into that conversation, it would be stuck on the loading screen and now nothing is loading. This is really annoying. I haven't really used my phone in the last 6 hours and before that everything worked perfectly.
On another note, I'm noticing that during the night, my phone uses up about 30% of the battery just on idle. I have wi-fi turned on but is this normal? I only slept for 6 hours...by the way, the battery charging all seemed normal before but now I just plugged in my phone about 1.5 hours ago and it's only increased by about 3 percent...
My phone is not rooted and has been updated recently to the latest version. I also have Lookout Security installed. Any help would really be appreciated!
Update: I just noticed that my phone was blinking red and green one after another. After checking it seems to indicated that it's because it is overheating so i've now disconnected the charger and turned it off. But i can't think why it would be overheating. It's placed on a wooden table away from sunlight and any heat sources and like i mentioned earlier, I haven't really touched it in the last 6 hours so I was definitely not using anything intensive.
Did restarting fix the messaging problem ?
What apps have the highest % for battery use ?
Well, your phone probably was doing something intensive.
Maybe your antivirus was upset by the email or message.
@PhoenixFx: Yeah i did restart the phone which didn't help. I even turned the phone off for 30 minutes which cooled it down but as soon as i turned it back on, it started to get hot again. Whilst it was turned off i had it charging and then when it came back on i noticed the battery percentage increased much more so the battery was definitely fine. The process which used the most power was Viber which was at 9%, there were a couple of other processes but they were all under 5%. I even uninstalled Viber which didn't help. Looking at all the processes that were running, I couldn't see anything that was abnormal.

That could be but I don't see why it would. The message was just a regular text message.
Anyways, I have now done a factory reset and it seems to be fine again. But if anyone has ever come across this or know the solution, please let us know so if it happens again, I'll know what to do and it would also help others who experiences the same thing. By the way, how much SHOULD the battery drain overnight with the wifi turned on?
You may have gotten a virus. I got a gmail virus that wiped a lot of my emails and wouldnt let me receive. I know this is about messaging but they are made by google so it is a possibility. I suggest a full restore and to run a virus scan with one of the play store's antiviruses.

I had the same problem with the messages. They wouldn't open or they would take a lifetime to load and open. Resetting and **** wouldnt work so I did a re-install of my ROM, wouldnt work, so I did factory wipe and started fresh. So far so good.

Yeah I'm not having any issues so far. Of course, it could've been a virus but I scanned my phone regularly with Lookout and also when it happened. Very weird. Anyways, if it happens again, I'll post back. Certainly hope not, this was the second time in a month I had to do a factory reset (last time was when I updated to Sense 4.1 and for some reason it wiped my phone and didn't even do the update. I had to make it download the update again for it to install...)
Ok, it's just happened again. First i heard the notification sound for an email, but then when i turned on the screen, i couldn't see any notifications. Now when i go into my SMS, they take forever (literally) to load. This is really getting pathetic. The amount of problems i've had with this phone, not to mention the constant "loading" screen when i press the home key. FFS, i never had this many problems with my old iPhone 3GS.
Update: I've just done a scan with AVG and Lookout and both turned up nothing. Most likely that this is not a virus related issue then.
this is happening on the stock 2.17 firmware also
no notifications, if you look in the messaging app, new messages are there
i cant understand how htc cant fix this? its been present from 1.28 fw

a gmail virus? care to explain a bit more, like the name of it etc? i did have some problems where it wouldn't sync with the latest version but is now working ok..
If you text a hell of a lot like I do then the problem is the phone is trying to load all of the message threads as fast as possible. Which uses a **** ton of your RAM, hence the 3 minute wait. I current have the HTC one x+ but the phones are basically the same. Here's what i did for the same exact issues.
For constant overheating:
1.Let your phone die.
2.Put your phone in your freezer and let it sit for a few minutes until its pretty cold.
3.Fully charge your phone
4.If you havnt already done so, download the latest update for your phone
5.Turn on and keep the battery saver option on. You do not have to keep the brightness low though
For messaging issues:
Go in your messages and delete all of your old threads to people whom you no longer converse with.

Unfortunately Android Wear has stopped

My wife's moto360 has recently stopped working. She woke up today and was greeted with a white screen that said "Unfortunately, Android Wear has stopped." Clicking Ok brings you to the watch face which hangs for a few seconds and then returns to this screen. During this period you cannot navigate the watch at all.
I have tried the following to resolve the issue but none of them have solved it.
1) Rebooted the watch by holding the button for 30 seconds.
2) Rebooting the phone.
3) Turning off bluetooth on the phone.
4) Uninstalling android wear.
5) Unpairing the watch and the phone.
Right now it looks like the watch is basically a brick. Has anyone else seen this? Is there a way to factory reset the watch without having to go through the menus on the watch (i.e. from a phone app for example).
I ended up fixing this. Basically I had to repeatedly mash the button on the side while trying to scroll the screen and dismissing the error prompt. Eventually I was able to get to the settings screen which then allowed me to select the reset (which factory resets the device).

Clearing cache of Android wear app on phone helped. Restarted watch as a safe side measure. Everything fine now.
I have exactly the same problem now. But I can't solve it with you metod. Any clue of how can I fix this? Thank you!!!
Mine just started doing this as well. Tried just about everything I have seen on the internet so far to fix it and nothing has worked.
+1. Woke up and found the screen as OP described. I have tried everything except factory resetting the watch. I can't get into the menu long enough to do it. As soon as I hit the OK button the "Android Wear has stopped" screen pops back up within about 1 second. The GUI doesn't respond well enough for me to get to the factory reset.
update: Finally managed to get to the factory reset. The watch rebooted, but did not factory reset.
I gave up and am RMAing it.
for me it worked after lots of resets... but had to start all over again then.... dont know why this happened

I just bought my Moto 360 all excited to get my Android Fanboyism to the next level.
The first thing I did was try to update my Android Wear version.
And This is when I start getting the error..
It keeps saying google play services crashed.
google apps crashed..
Someone help..
I know it's a pain, but I ended up RMAing mine. I took my aftermarket band off and just sent it back in the original box with nothing else. They very quickly shipped me a refurb (which appeared to be new). It came in a brand new box with full accessories (charging cable/stand and band). A few days of inconvenience but well worth it. Got the new watch, updated to the latest and it's been running smooth.
i just got this message today!! i cannot interact with the GUI no matter what i tried.. i tried all possible steps except factory reset cause i can't get to it...
IM kinda SOL cause i bought this in the US when it launched and I am in Canada... : < sigh... this totally BLOWS
I tried several times to get to the reset... No luck, Motorola agreed to replace it for free.
Same here ... No luck in accessing settings for factory reset ... going to send it to RMA

Just wanted to say thanks, because I've been experiencing a similar issue, and I just filled out the RMA for mine. It's been freezing and overheating so bad I have to take it off for awhile. I can live a few days without it.
I think you need to contact with the service center as soon as possible.
I had this same thing and the only solution was to RMA. Goty new 360 in less than a week.
So I got my new 360 in the mail, brand new in retail packaging, and even came with an additional charger. (YIPEE one for work!!) However it's started doing the same thing!! "Unfortunately Android wear has stopped wait, close" No matter how many times I hit close it reappears. I have to hard reset it every time. I took it off the charger 2.5 hours ago at 100% and its down to 52% already because of this. (Once again thankfully I have the extra charger now). I don't understand the issue. My boyfriend's 360 has the same software version and does not have any problem whatsoever. He's also able to change the colors while on the dock and neither of mine would do it (the old or the new). I have tried every color in the settings on my phone and it stays blue. I am beyond frustrated here. IDK what is going on!! Oh we both have Nexus 6 phones too, so I don't think it has to do with that.
I think I'm going to try flashing a different ROM to my phone, and factory resetting. Maybe **sigh** maybe that'll work...

So I'm pretty sure I narrowed my issue down to watchmaker. I asked my BF if he still uses the watchmaker watch faces and he said no. So I took it off, and started using the regular MOTO watch face. I have not had any errors in 2 weeks. I'm about to install a new ROM on my phone again today, so I may re-install it to see if the issues resurface. If they do I will be contacting the developer, as I have the paid version of the app.

Question Random reboots

Well, I had the 6 Pro for about 36 hours. It kept rebooting randomly, even after a factory reset, so it's going back for an exchange.
Has anyone else had this issue?

No definately not, here the worst I have experienced is some app crashes, they probably aint android 12 ready, and some pretty big lag moments
I don't have any issues. Do you have the November update yet?
For some strange reason, I noticed exactly this aswell (one time, this morning). I was working out and my phone laid on the table, when I saw it lit up because it restarted for no reason.
I guess it's a software bug.
And no, there was no automatic system update - I checked, I'm still running the old version.

Is there a bugfix list of any sort about the most recent sytsem update?
I tried to find one, but as of now I have been unsuccessful.
No, nothing at all either. Mine also installed silently at some point. I recall a notification asked for a reboot yesterday morning.
No, not had one random reboot since I got it on Tuesday.
Nothing here either. Good luck!

I had the November update and all apps had been updated as well. It would freeze and then reboot.
I did a factory reset and did not restore any of my apps, just ran it with the factory apps, and it still did it. Since no one else is having the issue, I'm feeling confident it was a bad unit. I had the 128 gb version.
It's back to the pixel 5 for another week or so. I had to exchange that after I got it too because of a bad proximity sensor. Either I just have really bad luck or Google needs to tweak their quality control department.
Weird unexplainable OS crashes like that are usually due to faulty hardware, potentially RAM
If you're having issues, do yourself a favor and keep an itemized list (on your device, word doc on pc, somewhere) and notate the following for each occurrence:
-date / time
-the fault (self reboot, major lag, over heated, fast battery discharge, etc.)
-what you had to do to clear it (rebooted, closed app, powered off/on, etc.)
When talking with Google about a replacement, having THIS information ready to read off will make it extremely hard from them to give you any grief about you needing a warranty replacement.
An itemized list of faults is MUCH better evidence that you need a replacement than "well, it rebooted a few times last month"

I am inclined to agree here, but my years of working with Windows and Android incl. rooting and using custom roms and kernels want to disagree here. There can be half a gazillion software based reasons for an OS crash, especially with a buggy release like Android 12. Not sure if you participated the beta, but it reminded me of Windows 11. There was a buggy beta build with about 100 bugs, they fixed 20, called it a day and released it. Now we new P6 owners can play beta testers Volume 2 for Google.
One very important thing here is also: Did you guys set up your phone "clean" or did you copy over your old phone by cable or did you use backup?
Any of these things can cause issues.
I, for example, used a cable to transfer all file and apps from my P4 XL to my P6 Pro. It's possible that this is the rootcause for some issues, or maybe it's not. Maybe there are even problems that occur only if you transfer your files from specific phone models to this one, you never know.

Sure, but the OP stated the crashes are happening right after a factory reset, and anecdotal evidence on this thread suggests it's not widespread. It does point to some sort of hardware problem.
I'm having exactly the same issue!
I got the phone today and booted it up for the first time. I selected my language and as soon as I pressed get started it froze, then got stuck in a bootloop. I fixed that by factory resetting from within recovery.
Once I'd gotten through the setup it crashed again when I clicked on the apps button in the optional setup. Because of this I factory reset and set the phone up for a third time.
Third time I got through setup with know issues but the phone freezes/reboots roughly once every two hours. I've been searching all day to see if anyone else has mentioned this issue.
I guess this phone is going in for replacement. Does anyone happen to know how long that takes/ if I'm going to be without a device for long?
They told me 3-5 business days to get a replacement. I expect mine early next week.

I just had 3 random reboots today. Phone just laid on the side of my table on my laptop, doing nothing. It was in the span of probably ~10 minutes each reboot. A strange observation I made - now that I removed my phone from the back of my laptop and laid it directly on the table, no more reboots. Maybe it's a coincidence, maybe it has something to do with the magnets of my Laptop (has quite a lot inside). Not sure what to make of this. It kinda feels like a software buggy-thing, but it's odd that it sometimes just comees and goes. It also only appears to be in absolute idle. I had my phone working yesterday for about 12 hours, incl. using it constantly with navigation, and it never faltered for once. That's why I'd say it's a software thingy, if it had something to do with hardware, it would reboot/fail when under load. But it doesn't.
Had 4 total reboots as of now (had the phone since 27.10).
First reboot was yesterday (28.10) morning when working out, phone laid idle around, booted up.
And now again 3 reboots, morning, laid around, did nothing.
So I've had probably a dozen in two days. I take my phone out of my pocket and attempt a fingerprint unlock only to be told that my PIN is required after a restart. At first I wasn't sure if it was actually rebooting until last night. It prompted me for my pin and upon entering it, the screen locked up for about 20 seconds and it rebooted.
This morning I woke up and was yet again greeted with the "PIN required after restart" and less than 20 minutes later it was the same thing. Only once hav I witnessed the "G" boot animation, but everytime I see my UI loading. So I'm not sure if it's always a full reboot or some times it's just the UI crashing. Everything on my device is stock.

Did you transfer your old phone over with a cable, or backup, or did you start "fresh"?
Maybe we can narrow it down if it's software or hardware problem.

Question Every 3-4 days I must reboot

Ok, so like the title says, every 3-4 days I must reboot my phone.
When I play games, the game icon will show up in the lower right corner, I have everything for the game stuff turned off. I can click on the icon and it will ask me to turn on. I back out and it's gone for a few minutes. Mostly until I swipe back, then it will reappear. I can reboot the phone and it will work fine again for a another 3-4 days.
There are other instances that force me to reboot as well, one happened last night. I was scrolling through a local news app and the touch stopped working. I could not scroll up or down, and swiping back did not work. I had to lock the phone and just as the screen went dark, the phone scrolled in the directions I did and it backed out. This only happened when I hit the lock screen.
Is there a fix for this? Has anyone else experienced this?
My phone is rebooted on two to three occasions a month. Others have it more frequently. I wouldn't even say rebooted. Mine just shuts down at random times like other users so I don't know if there's a fix for this. I'm hoping there will be one within an update soon.
Google's absolutely ****ty disregard for their customers and customer service. I'm not Keen on sending a brand new device over to get a refurbished one that isn't guaranteed to solve the issue and most likely guaranteed to come with different issues that my device doesn't have already.
Does it back up to combat this since I have alarms set for work? In case the phone turns off, I don't want to miss work. I use my Google Home Mini speakers, a backup alarm.

Mine does not reboot or shutdown on it own, not once... I have to reboot every so often to keep it functional.

I'd say do a backup and run https://flash.android.com/welcome to fully Factory Reset the phone and see if that helps (Mine upgraded just fine, but my parents both failed the Dec update and had random issues requiring the use of the Android Flash Tool).
Like the OP I do have to reboot my phone about every 3-4 days, but I don't attribute that just to Google Android, coders have become lax on how tight they keep their code, and I say that because in Windows 10 and Windows 11 you have to reboot every few days as well or see an increase in weird issues.

Just to clarify this, most carriers prevented the December update from releasing as Google has asked them to prevent it from going through, primarily due to an issue with calls dropping.
I always manually update my phone, however, I noticed the call dropping bug one day for about an hour straight.
But aside from this meaningless info, I agree with what you said: Attempt a factory reset and see what happens. I turn my phone off every night and charge it, so I don't notice any issues similar to what OP has mentioned.

Yeah mine did that it would randomly restart once a week no matter what I was doing but I did a factory reset and it hasn't happened since!

In your case, was it just a restart? Because mine literally powers off It doesn't reboot again. It shuts down in the middle of the night and I wouldn't know until I wake up when using my phone to figure out it won't turn on. I almost missed work on several occasions because of this lol

Yeah I was lucky and it was only once a week which was tolerable!
Something is definitely not right, hopefully is not a dodgy app but that would be preferable than something unfixable.
Ok guys you are missing my point and question. I DO NOT have the random reboots most have, but I have other issues that no one seem to have. Example, I listen to Spotify over night, I fall asleep to music, but 2 days ago it would randomly pause. At first I thought it was do not disturb that I just turned on, on my watch. It was not. Then I thought I may have been hitting my watch, I took it off and it still paused. I rebooted my phone and it's been fine since, no random pauses. Another example is, I play a game but I have the game dashboard turned off, but there times where the icon will pop up in the lower right. When I go into the settings for it, it shows it's off. When I go back to the game the icon is gone for a few minutes then it reappears. The only way for me to get it to stop showing for a few days is to reboot my phone.
I know you shouldn't have to reboot your phone every few days, and by few I mean sometimes it's 3-4 times a week. That tells me something is wrong.
Are you on the November or December update?
If November, I would try the December one.
Rooted or not rooted?
Either way, I would try a factory refresh and don't restore your apps from backup. Manually install only your most critical apps and see if you have the problem. Even better would be not install any additional apps at all and see if the problem happens. If it doesn't happen, install another small group of your most important apps and test again for long enough. Etc.
If you try thre update and/or factory reset, you could try restoring your cloud backup as normal and see if you have any problems still, but if you do, be prepared to factory reset and try like I mentioned in the above paragraph.
Until you can narrow down if the phone has this problem on the December update before you even change settings and add your favorite apps, then you won't know if it's the phone itself (possibly hardware problem), an app you have installed, a problem particular to a combination of factors including if you're on the November update, or what.
Good luck! Please let us know what happens.
I can tell you that until I updated to the December update I had the kinds of issues you had, where my P6P would malfunction (scrolling, just freezing) and I had to reboot the device. That was the first 6 weeks of using it. But when I updated to the December build, the issues for the most part went away. Hopefully you are on November and can update to December or wait until the January update drops. But I can say that I almost considered returning the phone due to the bugs until the December update resolved everything and it was like a new phone!
Good luck.

Awesome!!! This is the kind of news I like to hear..... Just waiting for att to send it through. I checked this morning as my work Verizon Samsung phone got an update.

Question Bug or Rogue App?

For the past...3 days...my new Google Pixel 6 Pro has decided that 7 am is a good wake up time for me (the cats don't mind, they get fed earlier). It's not an alarm though, there's nothing to disable on the screen, and talking to the assistant to "disable alarm" does nothing. It starts at 7 sharp and crescendos until it ends at 7:02 exactly.
I looked through threads, and couldn't find anything similar, so am wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this?
I know I had something similar, and there have definitely been similar reports previously in this section, although it's not Pixel 6-specific, and might not even be Pixel-specific at all. Check the "Bedtime" tab at the bottom right of the Clock app. Although in that case, it did show up as a separate alarm as well when I had it enabled.
Thanks for the thougth - that wasn't even enabled yet on my phone. Go figure, yesterday (my birthday as it were), I woke up on my own at 3 am and it never went off. This morning though? Back to the shenanagins. At this point I'm about ready to throw my hands in the air and just SET my normal alarm to 7!
As much of a pain it can be, I think if I were in your shoes for much longer, I would consider a factory reset. Either that or we could trade phones - my wake up time is 7 AM most mornings. j/k

Do you use Tasker? If so, I think the "Use Reliable Alarms" setting needs to be disabled, although this may relate to another clock/alarm issue and not the one you're having. Can try it anyway.

Sadly, not any more. I had previously removed Join (by I think the same author) because it meant going through adb and even then it didn't always work properly.
So, set my "normal" alarm to 7 am tomorrow. We'll see if that overrides the annoying alarm with my normal alarm. If so, I guess I just...deal with getting up at 7 am? Yay? My writing partner will appreciate that if it means I get more writing done...
When I flashed a13 beta 4.1 , I rebooted the device after root and this clicking sound came out of my p6pro, with no way to stop it. It got louder as it went too, scared me a bit
It was the alarm that must've been backed up to my Gmail or something. All I could do was flash the firmware again.

Does the one that you don't intentionally have use a different alarm sound, or anything else different about it (what the icon and/or alarm screen when it's going off)?
Yeah, finish Game of Thrones, will ya?

Yeah, it's got a beep that steadily increases in volume and frequency. BOTH went off at 7 am this morning, with me disabling MY alarm in relatively short order (have to solve a math problem) but the rogue one going until 7:02.
Haha, I wish I was that successful. I'd be happy to just break even on a book at this point!

When you got your phone did you install your apps from a backup, maybe from another phone? Also, do you have an old calendar event that may be triggering this?
Yes, I installed from my old phone, a Motorola One 5G Ace. It didn't really do it as a backup, which I thought was odd, but paired the two phones somehow.
I have no events on my calendar at 7 am. Any of my calendars, actually. I just went through them all and checked. I don't think I have any truly oddball apps - though I did have to switch to one new app with the transition to this phone. Pure Calendar Widget was no longer available, so I went to the paid version of Business Calendar. That doesn't appear to have any alarms associated with it.
I'm really at a loss. And as much as it would annoy me, I'm debating the factory reset. But if I restore from a backup, wouldn't I just be restoring the same problem back into place?

If you installed/transferred from an old phone, I'm wondering if you have an app or setting or something that got transferred over that is causing this. Maybe a system app that doesn't show up in the user app list or something.
Yeah, I wouldn't restore from an old phone or backup. Seen people have problems when doing this. A clean flash, imo, is always best when setting up a new phone, including clean installing all your apps. At least it will eliminate any problems that may have been caused by restoring old app data, etc...
See, part of my issue is I don't want to lose voicemails etc. My Mom died 2 months ago, so I want to make sure I keep those messages as long as I can...
I guess I go back to removing apps that I don't use consistently until I find the one causing issues.
I'll find out in several hours for sure, but I think I have been completely missing the mark blaming my phone (and it goes to show my hearing perception is fading) ... I got a new atomic alarm clock at the end of last month. After the beeping alarm went off this morning and my head happened to be turned in a different direction, I went over to that alarm clock and the alarm was turned on. Sigh. I've turned it off, but I bet you that solves my issues.
Boy do I feel like a moron now...
Not much help but when it goes off go to settings and look on notifications and should show rouge app that way maybe also you could try do not disturb mode but alarms could over ride it

Wow, glad you found the cause. That's all that matters.
A couple of years ago, for weeks I kept getting woken up by a noise which I was assuming was related to our cat (even though it was a new and regular noise). I finally found it was our spare refrigerator's icemaker accidentally got turned on, and I don't have that fridge hooked up to the water, so it kept trying to make ice out of air, and that fridge is on exactly the opposite side of the wall I sleep on. Not the same thing as your situation, but man, now the one or two times after that I heard that noise, I went straight to the spare fridge, and it was always that the icemaker accidentally got turned on, but it doesn't happen anymore, as we both now know to double-check that "arm" that turns it on after we're done in that fridge's freezer.
That alarm didn't go off this morning (shocker, right?) ... but I must have had a night terror that woke me up earlier, because I SWEAR I experienced my "normal alarm" (having to solve a math problem to turn off the alarm) and when I looked at the clock it was 6:43. I had adjusted my normal alarm back to 8:15. Needless to say I was up far before that point!
Great, so this stuff is driving me so nuts it's freaking me out in my sleep!
