Can I repair my headphone and charging ports? - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys so unfortunately my faithful Zenfone 2 (ZE550ML I think) is dying on me. A few months ago my headphone jack stopped working, I would have to hold headphones still so they would work. I dealt with this by using BT headphones and was able to get by OK. But tonight my charge port is doing the same thing and I just want to fix it. My phone is no longer covered (as far as I am aware) by the warranty. Any ideas on how to repair?

Its simple. Buy something like this:
Original USB Dock Charger for ASUS Zenfone 2 ZE551ML ZE550ML Data Transfer Charging Port Microphone Module Board Replacement
http://s.aliexpress.com/ZvIbeIBR
(from AliExpress Android)
Get the manual from yt or pdf

WOW! I honestly didn't expect anyone to sell anything like that! Any possible solution for my headphone jack though?

[Q] HDMI MHL HDTV Mirroring adapter

So...I'm on a research adventure to figure out which MHL adapter to buy.
I know that the GS3 and GNII use an 11 pin setup. I don't want a dock [yet] and don't care about USB OTG simultaneously while displaying HDMI (although I might pick one up in the future). Right now I want an MHL adapter that:
1. Has zero or almost NO lag while mirroring so I can game
2. Charges while plugged in (some people have reported slowly losing charge...and I am on the Perseus kernel right now as some have reported better charging functionality)
3. Displays 1080p or 720p with no flickering and no choppiness (the display is 720p...so I would be fine with showing only 720p...I don't really care about 1080)
I'm fine with getting an original 5 pin MHL and a 5 to 11 pin adapter...but the above points must stay intact.
Anyone have an opinion? Am I missing anything I should care about?
i use mhl on my note daily
buy the official gs3 mhl connector and you'll have zero problems. with a wall charger you'll never have trouble getting things charged. if you are in the car using the perseus kernel youo'll be fine as well, the stock kernel is a different story though you'll need a really powerful charger to get it to work in the car.

Yeh. I read that thread about car charging without the Perseus kernel. I was hoping someone would respond about a MHL adapter they had that was a 5 pin and they got an adapter for the 5 to 11. But, since the mod moved this thread to the q and a area from the General area no one is responding. Kinda funny, since the general area has a ton of question and answer discussions.
I ordered these:

Just yesterday.
Yeah I am a little cheap. But I read this setup works perfectly on the GS3 (and so it should on the Note 2). I guess I will see if that's right.
the skiva 5 pin mhl all in one adapter on amazon..no need to carry an hdmi cord or extra charging cord. Works for every other phone...bought the white 5 pin to 11 pin adapter on monoprice..works for my note 2 now..best of both worlds...can use for the note and my wife's nexus. Picture is 1080p...displays whole screen and doesn't cut it off at all...played a quick game..didn't notice any lag. I'm very happy with my purchases.
edit: JUST NOTICED IT'S SHOWING IN 1080i...no matter what I play. Going to have to research why now

Issue may be on the 500mah max on mhl 5 pin adapters. You may need to use the perseus kernel and the "screen standby app to not constantly drain your bsttery while using hdmi. Im also wondering about the delay. I have another similar setup in mind.

Charging with the car does suck. Using GPS on a trip the phone died along the trip. I bought a higher Amp usb car charger by Scoche (something like that) which worked great. I was on a galaxy s2 then and stopped by FYE to find it for $15. The company itself makes good stuff maybe you could look for them for better charging.

Trick with the car adapter is having one that does 1 AMP (1000MAH) OR higher and is either shorted (two center data pins) with a soldering iron, OR you have a cable that has the green/white wires shorted.
You can also buy a data only charge USB cable from Amazon.
Edit: Currently I have a 2.1 car adapter which I have shorted a USB extension cable (as to not ruin a perfectly good data cable).
How to (super easy really):

[UPDATE][FIXED!] Dead USB, Microphone Repaired!

So im from India and i bought the GNex even though it hasnt been released by samsung here. Somehow, within 2 months my USB port has got fried. The local cellphone repair man says my IC needs replacement and he hast been able to find the IC for weeks now.
So rather than giving up on this baby completely, i'm thinking ill pick up an external battery charger so that i can at least USE the phone (with ever so limited functionality). Anyway, since i'm in India, ill need to make a purchase from ebay USA and i need to be sure that the external battery charger im getting is right for my phone. Ive narrowed it down to this one
http://orders.ebay.in/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ImportHubViewItem&itemid=200730160116
Has anyone used this one...any reviews...or any other help anyone can offer me. I bought this phone for about $400 odd and dont want to part with it this easily. Thanks!
PS: I have the International GSM version i9250 with stock battery
Have you tried charging with the pogo pins? Plenty of people have made their own pogo pin docks that work great once you enable fast charge with a custom kernel.

Nah haven't tried that. Any links/how-to's? Also, any thoughts about the external charger i've linked?

There's two ways to utilize the pogo pins. The first option is that you can actually buy/make a pogo pin dock, and in essence you just set up the dock so that the pins press up against the contacts on the phone and provide a charging current. Samsung offers the car and desktop docks to do just that, though they're really expensive and hard to find lately. If you make one yourself, you only need to connect two of the three pins, but you'll need a custom kernel in order to actually charge at 1A instead of 500mA. The other option is to connect an inductive charger to the pogo pins, and it can even be done internally if you have the OEM extended battery cover.
Several tutorials for DIY pogo pin mods are available in the DIY Workshop thread.
The external charger should work just fine. However, personally I would try to find the official spare battery charger (Samsung sku EBH-1F2SBE), just to eliminate any risk of getting something that's incompatible. Expansys has them in stock, and they even ship to India. I checked Expansys and they seem to have the desktop dock as well.
Another option may be to simply replace the USB board. If you're feeling up to it, you can read the guide here. Keep in mind that you may need to find a different USB board for the GSM version, but the procedure should be pretty much the same.
Thanks a lot guys. Im a bit sceptic about making my own charging dock but i think i'll try and replace the USB flex cable. That might help. And thanks a ton for those expansys links. They're charging $30 for shipping but at least its genuine stuff. Will report back on progress.
Cheers!
Back with more bad news it seems...
I decided to give my phone to Samsung for repair. They managed to get my charging port to work but now my mic isnt working. They said they replaced the flex cable but i really dont know what they did. I was just wondering, are the mic and usb connector assembly both on the USB flex cable? So is it possible that they used a bad part? Any other possibilities? Any help would be appreciated guys. Is it worth ordering a flex cable and getting it replaced now?
BUMP!
any help at all would be appreciated please!
Fixed!
So all that was needed was a flex cable. Ordered it, got Samsung to hook it up, and everything works! Thanks to all for the help!

[Q] OTG Cable stopped working on Galaxy Note 2

So I've had my OTG cables (eBay/Amazon) for quite some time now. A couple of days ago it just stopped working. I was using it to transfer files from thumb drive to/from the phone. My buddy has the exact phone I do Galaxy Note 2 and both cables I have work fine on his phone but not on mine? Phone detects that the OTG is inserted with the usual "USB Connector Connected" notification but when a USB memory stick is inserted it will not show the "USB MASS Storage" notification and I can't see the memory stick in file manager. Occasionally (1 in 20 tries) and after a reboot, it will see the stick and allow me to explore the contents. I have tried 2 different cables that used to work fine with my phone and several USB sticks that also used to work and still do work on my buddies phone.
All other functionality of the phone remains perfect as it is fairly new. Charging through USB works fine, transferring data from USB to PC also works fine. I have looked into the port with a magnifying glass and it is clean and shows no signs of debris or pocket lint and the cable has a good feel when it is inserted. Positive click.
I tried to do a restore factory settings today and still it's totally hit and miss with either OTG cable.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Wow 60 views and not one suggestion. Guess this must not be a common thing at all.
I just tried it and works fine for me. Maybe try a different rom or custom kernel and see if it works then...I really dont have any suggestions
Galaxy Note 2
You said you tried the cables on your buddies phone but have you tried different cables on your phone?
Also this might help you.
Its meant for the gs3 but i can confirm works great on my n2. I see the dev has updated the op and others are saying the same.

:silly: "Bonk on the head!" I just remembered that several weeks ago while using a 2-port cigarette lighter to charge my Note 2 and iPad at the same time resulted in a funny burning smell. I took apart this charger (Amazon) and it was fried and melted on inside and obviously was of questionable quality. I guess at the time I didn't think anything of it because both the iPad and GN2 work and charge and sync perfectly well.
I've ordered a replacement charging port. Looks dead simple to change and phone itself looks much easier to take apart than the iPhone was. I found a site that sells the OEM charge port. I picked up an extra headphone jack as well since they are cheap. Yesterday while phone was charging in car, it woke up several times with the sound indicating a charger had been plugged in even though the cable was already plugged in securely.
I have also purchased the OEM Samsung OTG USB cable that was available for the Galaxy S2. I realize that the GN2 micro USB port has 11 pins but from what I have read the extra pins are for MHL HDMI output and there is no 11 pin OTG cable in existence but the port on the GN2 is backward compatible with 5 pin USB OTG.
Fixed
Today I pulled the phone apart and fixed the charging port USB OTG problem. Both cables that I have now are in working state.
This repair was VERY easy and took about 15min. with proper tools.

Please let me know how you fixed it. I am facing this same issue for past 2 weeks. Is it a hardware problem?

OP said it was a hardware issue for him. OP said replacing the small pc board and ribbon cable with the Micro USB port on it fixed the issue for him. I have replaced the USB port on my wife's Note 2 in the past (for a different reason, that is stopped charging.) It is a relatively easy repair, if you have the correct tools. You have to take the phone completely apart to replace the board, so you will need the small plastic tool to separate the bezel, as well as a small screw driver. There are walk through videos available.
If you decide to try this, avoid buying a cheap part. I bought a replacement part for about $5.00 from an e-bay supplier, but the company sent me two of them, and neither one worked. I bought a good one from and would recommend ETradeSupply out of Texas. That link is for the exact part. You will also pay for shipping, but it will be a good part. You can also buy the tools you need there if you want.

[Q] Charging Cable Meltdown

I woke up yesterday to find the micro USB end of my charger cable had melted while plugged into my phone.
I have used this cable for months, it was plugged into my macbook pro overnight. Not sure what happened, but there was a popup on my mac that said "USB port disabled...device drawing too much power..." (paraphrase)
Anyway, my phone, cosmetically, is fine (save for the burnt plastic smell), BUT the headphone jack doesn't work, and I can only use speakerphone to make calls or the caller doesn't hear me. (also tested the mic w/ voice recorder app and it doesn't work) And now no matter what cable/brick combination i use, i always get the "slow charge" message.
So I am pretty sure it fried at least the mic. the headphone jack, and messed up the charging port.
Any idea if this is worth fixing? Or even possible to fix?
The charging daughter board is around 15 bucks on eBay. It's fairly easy to install.
I wore out my charger port so I replaced it and everything works now except the mic. I've since research and it seems there are two mics once is the speaker phone mic on the charging board and another on the secondary board but can't confirm this. I'd recommend buying from Amazon as that may be a more reputable dealer. I'm forced to use a headset now to talk
Thanks for the info.
I reflashed the stock kernel and this somehow fixed everything but the Mic.
Now that the headphone jack works, I can use the headset to talk.
Still having issues with the charger port... Always get the "slow charge" message, and the phone will intermittently stop charging unless I unplugged and plug back in.
Might buy the replacement port as per your suggestion. But, I had an upgrade and was able to get the LG G3 for free so I will tinker with the M8 and see if I can't fix it for fun.

have u try to recalibrate the battery? hope its works
Tried unplug and replug it?
There are times where the charging becomes slow for no reason. And usually replugging can work.
Also check your port connection. Does it loose in one end? Have you tried another USB cable?

Go to any diy mobile repair shop and replace the USB port is your best bet other than sending it to xiaomi for repair
It's not just about charging,no earphone support using the 3.5mm to type c converter.ive tried different earphones and adapters but none works.i guess I'll have to look for a replacement usb ?
