ok basically im wanting to make my kindle fire 1 more gaming oriented. So , I want the OS version to be minimal and fast but still new enough to be compatible with most things, and I want to be able to overclock as high as possible (i made a cooling system for it )
Also I've never done any modifying with android, so I dont know for sure what all the pieces are that i need to have and what auxillary functions they perform (as in: bootloader (loads kernel?), kernel (overclocking?), ROM (kernel included?), something else?) I am a Linux user tho, so it would be helpful if I didn't have to use Windows to flash or whatever
Suggestions?

alright you need to root, install twrp and firefirefire
start with
[How To][Root] Kindle Fire 1 update 6.3.3/6.3.4 [2015]
then pick a rom, see the index
[INDEX] Kindle Fire Development
most roms haven't see any updates in years, many roms do not even have working download links
there are 3 different types of roms Otter, Blaze, and OtterX
Otter and Blaze use stock partitions, OtterX use modified partitions/recovery/Bootloader
also see Random Builds and Development (OtterX roms)
Sent from my XT1254 using XDA Labs
is there a utility or something in the rom to overclock it then?
And what type of rom or partitioning would you recommend?

Don't think anyone found a reliable way to over clock
I don't recommend any particular ROM, read the threads, ask questions in the specific ROM thread
im currently testing out a few different roms. im looking for best performance, i'll update a little later tonight with my results.
ok, ive looked around and i think i want an otterx kitkat rom, but there are a couple and i don't know what the differences are (SGT7, slim...). Like I said, I want something fast and stable, as I am not too familiar with tablets yet. Also i thought overclocking to 1.2 ghz was pretty stable, from what i've heard?
so after trying lots of different roms, including otterx roms with the extra partitioning, i have to say i am most impressed with the performance and speed of twa_priv's CM/SGT7 10.2 Otter (not otterx) build. it is very fast, smooth and runs apps very well. I definitely recommend giving it a try. It even has the Overclocking features you wanted baked straight into the settings under the "performance" tab, you can easily adjust the minimum and maximum clock speed. Right now i have mine set at 1200mhz max and 300mhz min, i am getting very very smooth performance in Youtube and Kodi (my main use for this tablet) and battery life seems to be really good so far. I definitely rate this ROM an 8/10 for the kindle fire 1st gen, its the best rom i have used, even compared to the most recent roms here on XDA for the otter/otterx. For an almost 6 year old tablet this thing flies. I definitley reccomend giving it a try, in fact try a few other roms before you try this one just so you can truly feel how magnificently fluid this rom is.
I used: cm-10.2-20131022-1433-otter-sgt7.zip
I got the rom here:
http://d-h.st/users/loosethisskin/?fld_id=27993#files
the guide for installing the rom is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2410112
I used an ultra slim version of gapps that only installs the play store in order to save ram, you can manually install any google app you need from the play store i just did it this way to save what limited resources are available on this device. You can find the download as well as more info here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2435683
if you need any help or have any questions, let me know
Awesome thanks!! it might be a little while before i get around to trying that.

RootMaster
Rootmaster apk
and
Rootmaster.exe run from PC
These are made by Chinese devs, not open source, but have been used by many people, with no known issues.
Update: Been using the CM/SGT7 10.2 Otter rom and its running great performance-wise, Drastic runs pretty much full speed on everything! There are some apps that I installed that just wont run tho, like smashy road and beach buggy blitz, but thats not a big deal.

Hello,
Im wondering if any active developers are left that will be working on a KitKat ROM for the Desire Z. Not looking for a ETA or anything, just asking if someone is interested.
Android 4.3 isn't even ready for public testing so perhaps we have to wait for KitKat a long time.
Anyway - is it true that Android 4.4 provides better support for older devices?

Support no. It just says APIs for low end RAM devices such as smartwatches and smartwear in general.
Would love this
Im hoping/waiting for this too. I feel like the Desire Z or G2 as it was called in the UK is still the best designed phone out there with a real keyboard and a lot of people like myself are still using it for this reason. When i heard about KitKat providing for low end devices, a light bulb went off for me. Still no word yet tho

I upgraded from (I think) Flinny's CM 10.1 to CyanKat, and it works well on first boot, but any subsequent reboots either bootloop or freeze at the loading animation (and the screen slowly fades...?). I'm going to try it again once there's another release.
Hopefully KitKat will run smoothly once they sort out the major bugs.
based on how the nexus s overreact on android 4.3.x i dont think the g2 is stable past 4.0 ics based on battery and how smooth it was. htc g2 downfall began at 4.1 os and continue when it come fully smooth os.

Yup thats why im solid on using this instead of Lollipop, even with Xposed & GB its slick as butter
Once CM12 is stable i can optimize that aswell and make it as smooth as kk, you will see a difference...
Hi,
As I see this rom is based on stock 21.85.14, basically with those tweaks:
- Rooted and busybox
- Debloated
- Pinkman Kernel
- Adrenaline boost
Am I right?

Your 10% right, i spent almost 3 weeks optimizing every single apk, go and look at a stock roms /system/app folder and compare to this roms /system/app, compare apk sizes and stuff inside, you will see a difference, and if that dosnt prove it, use stock 21.85.14 with everything wiped, then use this ROM even without Pinkman kernel and without it being debloated, you will notice a performance improvement,
how does it twerk?
moto g (2014) has low end flash storage, not so good r/w speeds, so i/o gets congested and things usually get queued, thats when you notice hangs when opening an app, my optimizations reduce app size and compress's everything in return for the cpu having to do more uncompression work, however our cpu is quad core, so there enough threads to handle the decompression, so this works quite well especially on our device since it has a decent cpu but bad flash storage,

Sorry if I sounded like ungrateful jerk, it was not my intention, I was asking that because I am using the 21.85.14 build debloated by myself, with a little tweak on lowmemorykiller.c and furnace kernel, so I wanted to know if it was something else.
Now I know it is more polished than mine, I'll try it asap.
Thanks and sorry if I sound rude.

haha dont worry bro, , im open minded usually, i was just drawing up a graph anyway, i like predicted i would get criticism cause at first sight it does look simple but its pretty complex, i hope it works good on your device and ive attached a graph for future-readers to see so i dont have to explain (i cracked out my super art skills for this lol)
*this is theory, not sure if android works this way, but this is the most plausible thing i know about it*

Well um thing is the optimizations are alot of hard work xD i can work on xt1063 & xt1064 but it would take along time + i would prefer if someone could come up with a flashable mod (which removes xt1068 stuff and replaces with xt1063 stuff and then i can optimize that)

maybe yes, i will in a future build, v1.0 is a fully stable build essentially i will remove moto migrate and then fix the ram, but afaik from using it, the ram seems to be fine, im browsing on xda fine with 4-5 tabs and listening to tunein radio so it seems alright (btw chrome is amazing with the compression optimizations)

Flash the attached zip - should fix the ram management, if its not working so well, go to /system/etc/init.d and delete 97ramscript

Must be an error in zip, Ill fix that and Re-Upload it..
Update: Do to a problem with the Zip file, I had to Redo Zip. New one has been tested by me, And works.
Sorry for the inconvenience..
BTW: This kernel is worked on all the time, So new updates will be released alot. I already know of a few more things that I want to add.
My Goal is to make this Operate at low temps while keeping its performance as well at Longer Battery Life.
One of my test builds, The battery lasted me 3 days on a single charge. Without heavy usage.
My temps range betwen 87f /30c - and - 100f/37c (Stabilize around 97f/ 36c).

Keep it up! It will get easier over time and its nice to look back and see how you have become more adept at what you are doing.
Just some friendly advice:
1. Always give proper credit
2. Always make clean commits.
1. is just because we do this for fun and for some sort of recognition (Even if some Devs won't admit it) and 2. because it makes troubleshooting, and reverting WAYYYY easier. When I started, I learned this the hard way. This way if you get into a situation where you have to make reverts or reset the branch, you are able to be more surgical about what you remove. If you have a commit that has alot going on in it then sometimes you cannot revert cleanly and it will have to be done manually. This can sometimes leave you more prone to make simple mistakes. Ones that we ALL make when Dev'ing late at night after a day of hard work and should really be getting more sleep. lol
Oh and 3. Learn to use Meld properly. This will make merging so easy, and will save you a metric crap ton of time.
If you need anything, feel free to PM me.

The file originally for sony z3 board but seems working on all S801 phones because they are just standard driver. I've tried to flash the file with my Fulmics 4.1 rom and working good, no problem at all. Now my GPU faster, UI speed much smoother and battery just same.
Be sure to flash the file from #6, not the OP one.
P.S. Fulmics 6.1 tested working fine too.

The OP zip got wrong path, plz read that dedicated thread. I believe it will still give you a result with success bcoz all it does is just copy to the wrong path and told you successfully copied all files to wrong location...... your freind most likely is still running with the old driver now.

yup, this driver is important and gives G3 a new life again. Since our GPU is hard to push 2K screen(though you can down to 1080P but a bit trouble plus I like 2K to read my pdf docs), this driver indeed improved the UI smoothness and responsive. At this time, I don't found power draining, battery performance is just identical.

Agree with you 100% sometime get trouble with lower 2k resolution. Adreno lives long
Been holding off but this is probably the main reason I'll root my phone!
Thanks for sharing guys
so is this new driver really improving overall performance or just placebo?

Flash it and feel. Dont flash on CM, AOSP or all videos cant play
Hi i flashed this and i noticed that clash royale kept on hanging and closing randomly. It has never happened before. I did not modify anything else after flashing this. Can anyone tell me how to revert back to the old drivers? Please help. Oh and as far as battery and overall fluidity is concerned, i didnt feel any difference. Thanks!
Yea, my apps crash after about 10-20 minutes of it being opened. anyone else?

Seem like its your apps problem not by the rom and driver. Maybe developers need to work more on it. Re flash ROM without wipe to revert to old driver

That information seems rather important and should be in the OP...
Hi all.
I have a nice OP3. And I'm looking for an nice stable 7 or 7.1 ROM.
I RUN now Open Beta 8.
The problem is that in 2 or 3 weeks the ROM begins to be unstable, slow and some issues.
So guys and girls, what do you like/prefer for an nice stable rom?
Thank you all. <3
The ROM hasn't been out two or three weeks - how can you claim it will become unstable?
I'm using it and it works great. I don't want to deal with the low quality camera on custom ROMs, and even if I did CM based ROMs have echo bugs in calls which is unacceptable for a phone

No I mean other CUSTOM ROM's.
Not the original/beta ROM. That will be ofcourse good.
Just do a backup of when you first install it. That way it is easy to reinstall and get the speed back that you claim to be losing. Also reformat your data and cache to f2fs in twrp. This will also boost speed, but you need to do this prior to installing your ROM. Just a couple of ideas to keep your device fresh and fast. I do this with my ROMs and beta 8 landed me a 148,XXX antutu score, the "black mix" RR rom scored a 151,XXX on antutu after substratum theme and loading various apps. I have gotten as high as 156,XXX with some builds, which puts it closer to scores that are put up by phones with the SD821 (low 160's). That sort of a difference will not even be noticeable in everyday use. So I highly recommend switching your file system if you are not already using f2fs.

Thanks man, but is it safe?
And battery friendly then?
Every Rom will get slower after you install a bunch of apps and use it over time unstable or stable doesn't matter. I don't understand your logic.

It is totally safe and it has nothing to do with your battery. It is merely a different file system.
I've heard that formatting to f2fs on 7.+ makes it problematic to flash root. Is that true?
No. Root and file system are two different things. You can have root on any file system.

Thats not true. F2fs on data breaks systemless mode. You need forced systemmode supersu.
Everything is interdependent, but I am running 2.78 SR5 on a 7.1 ROM right now.

Please, do not spread false information.
System-less SU works just fine with f2fs, also encrypted.

Please. You are wrong. The other guy is correct.
Are you kidding me? I've also attached prints where you can clearly see system-less running on f2fs.

Same here. No issue with root on f2fs.
Before flashing rom i formatted all partitions as f2fs, but after rom installation system and cache is on ext4 again. I saw somewhere that this is how it should be. but can you please confirm it?

Well on the new beta8 I'm unable to use systemless root it breaks the radio and cant detect any sim (didn't try forced systemmode).. but can't be sure if it's because of f2fs or not..
I'll try forced systemmode and see...
