I am having a hard time to choose "to root or not root".
is there a easy way to root?
i just want ad-block and maybe wireless tether, still worth it?
i used to own a HTC DInc, flashing this roms and that roms, and ended up cm7 as my last rom, none of those are stable. beside roms and kernels, what's the advantage of rooting my GN?
Yep... I got rid of all the bloatware, was able to adjust the screen brightness for the automatic setting, and all the things you mentioned.
It is quite simple. To get you started...
1) Download Android SDK and drivers
2) Start phone in bootloader (hold volume +/- down while powering up)
3) Go to your C:/program files (x86)/Android/Platform-Tools folder within a command prompt
4) Type in Fastboot oem unlock
You're now unlocked... Now...
1) Download Superboot http://android.modaco.com/topic/348161-30-nov-r3-superboot-rooting-the-gsm-lte-galaxy-nexus/
2) Put phone back into bootloader as shown above
3) Run the BAT file
I don't know about others, but after waiting 20 minutes, I did a battery pull because it was stuck on the Google screen. I then had root after booting.

here is the thing about a "nexus" device. It is intended for developing. it is very easy to unlock and re-lock the bootloader. and just the same to root. if ever you want to return to a stock state the images are available from aosp.
why anyone wouldn't root/unlock on a nexus is beyond me.
so the answer to you question is it doesn't matter. because a couple quick command lines will fix everything
Yes
Unlock the Bootloader
Root your phone
Get the WIFI tether app.
Its worth it. That single feature alone made me figure out how to do it. Its really scary honestly, when the words "flashing" come into play, i think about the bad BIOS flash i did at work...but I then watched this video: ?v=ZtKoaPEXzHs[/url] and it didn't seem so bad. So I did it.
The other things you can do with a rooted phone aren't that interesting to mainstream ppl. I'll include myself in that bunch, but wifi app is the one shining perk you get when you root.
thanks everyone, I rooted . the reason i am scared because I brick my first HTC DInc when battery pull on radio flashing haha.

I also rooted my GNex because of my old app databases, saved games etc.
Titanium Backup is THE reason for me to have root!
Adfree is also nice, but to be able to restore every app you had is just a banger!
I have not rooted my phone yet and don't see the need right now but that may change in the future.
Pretty much rooted my previous phones out the box but that was more to get near a stock rom with no carrier bloatware and as there is no bloatware on the Nexus that requirement for me to root has been removed.
I hope there are more kernels for stock roms.

Curious.. are those the speeds you're getting on 4G? Here in Chicago, I am getting between 28-32mbps down
EDIT: I don't pay attention.. see that was a 3G speed
No one said it on the first page, so I will.

I don't understand your post - Kernels are independent of ROMs. The only limitation right now is that most are built for 4.0.3 and the 4.0.3 OTA hasn't been pushed yet. Or is that what you mean?
I would live to root but man I don't understand any of this stuff. Its not as easy as the d3 was for rooting. I dont know what and where those files would be located and what they are. Is there a super newb version. I need something that does a step by step. Like where are this files that you talk about are they on the phone.

in my opinion, if there isn't anything compelling you to root at the moment, i'd wait until that time. there will eventually come a rom, feature or app that will motivate you.
all the high horse talk about what a "nexus phone is about..." is irrelevant because you paid for a device to do and not do what you please with it.
Sertainly I love my custom rom.

Thanks! When you root, does this delete all your settings and apps? I spent so much time setting up this thing, what's holding me back from rooting is having to do it all again.

Verify that you are on 4.1.1 and below? Google patches this on 4.1.2.

If you're just looking for the stock image (without your Google account connected or apps or any data back up), there are stock images that are built by Google that can be used to restore your phone back to stock (assuming you're on yakju/takju or Verizon). There are some regional variants (e.g. yakjudv) as well as other CDMA version (e.g. Sprint) that aren't uploaded though so you might want to double check which version your phone actually is. Though generally there isn't a difference between the GSM build variants. These images can be found here. If you're not using Verizon or one of the GSM Nexuses, I'm not exactly sure what other methods are available for non-rooted phones.
You could give this (which supposedly doesn't need unlock nor root) a try for apps and app data though YMMV.

I consider this the last resort, if he could get the exploit to work, he will obtain root, thus he will be able to unlock the bootloader without running fastboot oem unlock, no need to lose any data.

There is no method/program to root the Verizon Note 4 Retail version. The only Verizon version of the Note 4 than can be rooted is the Developer Edition.
SM-N910V
Where can I find this developer version of the Galaxy Note 4 for Verizon's network? (model SM-N910V)? I called Verizon Wireless and they escalated to managers but couldn't find it.

direct from samsung. only place you can get it and you have to act like you are a dev by filling out the form lol.
if you want it, sell your phone, use the money to put towards it. will cost you around 400-500 total if you do it this way rather than the MSRP

Dev Note 4 vs Stock Note 4
Thanks for the info and link!
Let me see if I understand the differences between the dev and stock Note 4 units.
1) If getting the dev Note 4 from Samsung on VZW (part #SM-N910VMKEVZW):
a. Must fill out dev form. LOL! OK, sure, whatever
b. Can freely install any N4 ROM and/or bootloader.
c. OTA will *not* be available from your carrier.
d. Can update ROM from new OTA by getting it from a kind XDA user with same phone (Note 4), no matter the carrier (e.g., from VZW; AT&T), then merge with current ROM.
e. Samsung only carries about 15-20 dev models in stock, so user base is small.
f. It's $700US, versus ~$200 for "stock" Note 4 from carrier w/plan.
g. No warranty, except maybe hardware failure?
h. Don't bother with device insurance, right?
i. Because it can be rooted, a firewall APK can be installed.
j. Truly bricking an unlocked Sammy these days is much less likely, due to robust process, tools, and devices.
k. "Knox" - can VZW detect a rooted device?
l. "Knox" - if VZW detects a rooted device ("yes" to 2k), what can/would they do?
m. "Knox" - is there any way to prevent carrier from creating a problem for your device?
n. If the dev Note 4 is bought, do you just bring it to a VZW store and have them register it as your new cell phone?
2) If getting the Note 4 from Verizon Wireless (part #SM-N910VZKEVZW):
a. As of December 3, EMSpilot *has* found a way to root the Note 4:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/development/definitive-root-deodex-knox-free-t2962545
b. What are the odds that process survive an OTA update? Was this just a fluke?
c. It's about $200US.

I'm not even going to try to tackle the first set of questions (1.a-n) lol! but the link you posted regarding root for the Verizon retail version is not correct. That link is just for a custom ROM emspilot has developed. There isn't root yet for the AT&T or Verizon models unfortunately.
Edited: reworded "semi-custom" to read "custom". It seemed I was disregarding his work when I re-read my comment and that was not my intention at all.
@nataliegrn: I did see that post as well, and I'm very interested to see the Note 4 root method surface. I did not read that post to imply that @EMSpilot posted a working method to root the Note 4. The OP states that the device model is N910VOYU1ANI1, not the N910VZKEVZW. I read the post to mean that the ROM he developed would feasibly run on a retail version Note 4 which had achieved root and TWRP recovery. If I misread that, or mis-stated in any way, it wasn't intentional. I know that the coders are working it out, it's way over my head. Note 4 root is coming for the VZW retail. There's enough motivation by coders who prefer the overall coverage overlays for VZW networks to warrant their efforts. Anyway, I'm coping with the wait by applying copious amounts of patience. Hope this helped... ^_^

Root Deodex/Knox-Free/Debloated vs semi-custom ROM
Hmm.. So did EMSPilot "simply" download a stock ROM, remove bloat, make some customizations, and install this customized ROM to a stock Note 4?
If so, then could such a "semi-custom" ROM on a non-rooted Note 4 hold any APK/software I want to install - like a firewall? One of the main reasons I want a rooted ROM is to install a firewall, and a few other important packages.

I think his ROM is only meant for a Dev edition phone and isn't a method for root (I THINK, but here's hoping I'm wrong! That would be so awesome!). That being said, IF you were able to install it on your phone by some means, then yes you would be able to install any of the normal root or system apps one would normally sideload/install into a rooted device.
If I understand correctly, this ROM is like another Note 4 ROM he has posted. The DE images were lifted from Kies, I believe, then manipulated. IMHO, he's talking about flashing the ROM to a DE device, not a stock one. He stated, in a thread about his other Note 4 ROM, that the ROM could likely/possibly run on a RE Note 4 as long as root was acquired and TWRP recovery was installed. He asserted that he'll develop a SafeStrap version once root has been posted for the RE Note 4.
The conundrum, as usual, is VZW's locked bootloader on the RE version of the device. Same thing happened to the Note 3. However, mere weeks after the US release date, there was a reliable (albeit tedious) root method available. Then came K!ngo root and, finally, Towe|root. IMHO, it won't be long before root is out for the Note 4 as well. I'd wager it'll happen before New Year's. I'll be sniffing around plenty to see what the coders are up to in the meantime. Good luck ^_^

@SscoootzZ sez: "...Note 4 root is coming for the VZW retail...."
Really?! Wow! Every post I've read on new Sammy phones says no more rooting will be possible on retail versions, so a rooted version of a retail phone would be big news.
@brittoking - The most important things I'm looking to understand from that ugly set of questions I posted is:
1. What exactly is this "knox" thing? Sounds bad.
2. If I get a dev version, can I just bring it to a VZW store and ask them to register that phone to my existing VZW #?
---------- Post added at 04:50 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:39 AM ----------
[/COLOR @SscoootzZ OK, you convinced me to wait. It's tough, though, considering LTE on my phone has been unreliable since February, along with other issues. Whoever roots the RE will get donations from me. Let's see... $200 for RE or $700 for DE and no OTA, support, etc.
I'm guessing that OTA's could revoke root, right?

To answering your two questions: 1) Knox is security software that, in simple/brief terms, detects any attempt to write or access system files. 2) If you get a Developer Edition Note 4 and take it to Verizon store they probably wouldn't know a damn thing about it. The simplest way to register that phone to your existing Verizon number is to insert your current Sim card into the new phone and turn the phone on.

Maybe I can clarify the discussion here. EMSPilot's ROMs available in the Android Development Section for the Verizon Note 4 are not intended for Retail versions of the Note 4. Neither version of his ROM will root or install a custom recovery on a Retail version of the Note 4. To the best of my knowledge there currently is no method to root a Retail version of the Note 4.
You can root a Developer Edition of the Note 4 two ways: 1) TowelRoot by geohot and 2) Flashing SuperSU in TWRP recovery, after TWRP has been installed via ODIN (and I think there is now a Chainfire/towelroot process for the Developer Edition that will accomplish root and custom recovery (TWRP) but not sure about that).
@jpcalhoun -- Thank you!! Great info!
Is Knox on Developer phones? And if it's "tripped" does it render the phone useless?
If you install a firewall app *without* root, can the firewall block SYSTEM apps?
Knox is on the Developer phone. It can be frozen, deleted or renamed if you have root. I don't know the firewall question, sorry.

If it has Knox in its name, freeze it. Unlocking bootloader and/or root has no impact. You won't see a difference.

Hi,
I am trying to unroot my HTC One M8 so that I can recover deleted numbers, SMS Texts etc. I'd never don't this before but successfully recovered data using GT Recovery on an old Samsung S3.
Tried to repeat the process on my HTC One M8 on a UK network provider. Downloaded and installed squabbies HTC One M8 Toolkit v2.5.0.0. It auto updated (very handy) and off I went striking the "get unlock token code". The phone (which is connected) powers down for restart and I get an on screen message on PC saying it is "restarting into download mode".
From there that's it. It just hangs and nothing further happens.
I've read the point & purpose of this particular forum/thread. Are you able to offer any direction please on where I might find some help with this please?
Thanks.

You don't need an unlock token to unroot, and you don't need a toolkit. I usually suggest to never use toolkits.
Also, you aren't going to be able to retrieve deleted numbers and SMS texts by unrooting either, as far as I know.
If you need to unroot, go to the SuperSU app in your app drawer, select settings, then select full unroot. Super easy. No toolkit needed.

I agree here (and with anything else xunholyx just posted), I don't see what unrooting has to do with recovering the mentioned data. Root enables more things, and doesn't typically limit much (exception is certain apps like banking and Pokémon Go, which don't allow root).
EDIT: I looked up GT Recovery, and it says "root required" for some features. So I'm confused what the OP is doing exactly.

This is slightly disconcerting to me, as this and other HTC phones do not have a "download mode".
Sure i've tried that but will give it another go
I do have SuperSu and have tried unrooting with that. But i'm sure before it lets me unroot it wants superuser or administrator rights before I can access settings. And from what I see, I appear unable to give it those rights so I'm not making much progress on that front.
But following your suggestion I will revisit that.
Thanks

Just trying to figure it all out
From my experience with the Samsung S3, when successfully unrooted I was able to recover deleted phone numbers and deleted sms texts using GT Recovery. This did require the device to be unrooted first. It was a few weeks back now but I'm sure is was Kingo Super Root that used to unroot that device.
On the HTC I have tried numerous root tools inc Kingroot, Kingo Super Root all to no avail and cannot seem to find a root tool that will simply unroot the device. Upon searching for further info and root tools i came across XDA Developers and the so called "sqaubbies Toolkit" which seems to suggest that it can unroot the HTC via a pc connection, so that is why I downloaded it and are trying it. But that doesn't seem to be working correctly either.
So apologies if I've made this difficult to understand but it really is this simple. I want to recover deleted numbers and texts on the HTC. Having successfully recovered deleted numbers and texts from the Samsung S3 using GT Recovery from an unrooted device I now want to repeat that process on the HTC. But right now I seem unable to root that device for an as yet unknown reason.
Any help anyone can give is appreciated.
Cheers

I haven't seen such "unroot" methods work for this device. They never seem to completely remove all signs of root.
The only true method to unroot, is to restore a stock ROM, never rooted, such as a stock TWRP backup.
Instructions here, but don't restore data, otherwise your existing data will be wiped. Also, no need to restore stock recovery in your case.
For that matter, make a TWRP backup of your existing data, before you try any of this. To make sure you don't wipe it accidentally (and lose all your data), in the process.
Or, if you want to leave the phone rooted, but hide root, there is an Exposed module for that, which you might want to try.

Good to know, thanks. I'm not qualified to speak of those more recent phones, as I'm obviously still stuck on my M8!
Moral of the story, the toolkit is trying to put the M8 into download mode, which it doesn't have such a mode.

Yeah, and I don't understand why they bothered to change things like that. They also changed hboot to aboot, another head scratcher, lol.
You can change CID in download mode without booting to RUU mode now, and with the 10 you can change MID there too with a simple fastboot oem writemid *mid here*. That's a big convenience.
I'm going way OT here. Sorry.

I just googled squabbi (it's not called squabbies) toolkit, and it is built for the M9. You can't use that on the M8.
Who makes this stuff up?

Thanks for that. The developer is Squabbi, you are correct. However within the program itself he/she refers to it as "Squabbies HTC One M8 Toolkit". Cant understand why someone would develop something for the HTC One M8, promote it as that but then it apparently not work on the HTC One M8. Its got M8 written all over it, and I found it here in this very forum.

When I googled it, I should have scrolled further down, or perhaps re-googled squabbi instead of sqaubbies. I just got M9 results.
Did you get unrooted? It's really fairly simple manually instead of using one click. If you haven't, reply here. And if you have :good:

The confusion is understandable. I did see the M8 version toolkit when I Googled. But I did have to Google, as I don't recall this toolkit at all. Of the ones folks use, Hasoon seems to be the most common. Although, there was a good amount of traffic on the Squabbi thread (48 pages) at one time.

Fully agree here. From what I've seen on the forums, the toolkits can cause more problems than they fix.
Like the title says. Why?
I used to root/ROM all my devices but as Android grew up I have found less reasons to. I haven't had my 6P rooted for the last 3 months at all and my Pixel isn't rooted currently. I may decide to later for the dual speaker mod though.
So why do you root? For a feature? a tweak? habbit? just because you can/feel you should as a power user?
System wide ad away, custom kernels, Xposed when it comes out, AppRadioUnchained and root Tasker. The power of root! (Can fix unforseen issues)
Ad away, Xposed and AppRadioUnchained are game changers for me, well worth the trouble of root.
Twrp is another really root, but usually has the same negative effect, aka warranty issues, but system backups are great too.
PS: Pixel has no Knox and can be unrooted 100% via flash a stock image or locking bootloader (causes factory reset) so why not?
Rooting is my way of saying "**** you" to the "man". I want full control of my phone, not just what the "man" thinks is adequate or best for me.
Adaway
Call recording.
Substratum, Swift Black theme, Titanium Backup plus all of the above.

I would go with unrooting by flashing a stock image but I would warn against locking the bootloader of a modified device. Put the stock image on and then lock the bootloader if you want but don't lock it while it's rooted, if you get into a bootloop, you won't be able to rescue if the bootloader is locked.
Not trying to pick a fuss, I just wouldn't want anyone to have a soft brick situation with a locked bootloader.
Maybe a Google store Pixel, you could re-unlock and restore from a soft brick with a locked bootloader but if it's Verizon and on 7.1.1, better not lock it while it's rooted.

There is absolutely no reason to re-lock the bootloader. Even if you're sending back to Google (unlocked bootloader does not void warranty).

I completely agree, personally, the only reason I'd do this is to return/sell the device, in which case, flashing a stock image via ADB is the way to go to totally wipe everything back to stock.
Why did I root
I had Samsung S5. Still on Alltell UDP. Used to use FoxFi for Wi-Fi on the go. I used to pay around $100 for comcast internet and basic cable. I came home one day and realized I am just stacking Wi-Fi on top of my comcast Wi-Fi. I figured why am I paying to Wi-Fi while I Wi-Fi. Then I had a decision, do I keep the comcast or the verizon. Well the verizon was mobile so that made it easy. Plus I don't watch TV other than some golf and college football. Go Spartans!! Then an OS updated caused FoxFi to stop working. My wife works from home and needs Wi-Fi. I had to figure something out fast.
I came here.
I couldn't get Samsung S5 to root, and since we needed new phones anyways, I bought 2 Nexus 6's. Best phone ever IMO. I read and studied for weeks. Only had time on weekends to figure out root. Finally I figured it out. Basically TWRP at that time. Anyways, it worked. Native hotspot and faster than comcast was.
Recently comcast threatened to kick anyone with UDP off "again". I was on Reddit trying to figure out how to stay on my plan via r/verizonUDP. There were all these crazy names for shady ways to keep your plan. Someone mentioned that they spoke to a Verizon rep and they stated they only way to be truly unlimited was to be under contract. He put up the legacy Verizon website. I went on there and was able to get mine and my wifes phones back under 2 years UDP.
By this time I was now a Nexus and soon to be Pixel guy. No way was I ever going back to any bloatware or non-stock type of phone. I realize root fixes a lot of this but with my love of the Nexus 6, I was sold on going with the Pixel XL. Let me tell you I had buyers remorse for a few months. 2k for 2 phones that were all getting pretty negative reviews. Glad I stuck with it thought. I love the Pixel XL.
I hook a bunch of people I work with up with my Wi-Fi. Network refresher was wokring for a bit. The 7.1.1 update nuked network refresher. I gave it a week or so then decided to root this phone.
Now with some experience under my belt I was able to root with CMD prompts and no TWRP. So proud of myself!!! Thank you to everyone here who has taken time to write down and explain the steps as well. Its not easy for someone who is not familar with the process and just started rooting within the past year. I realize this is a developer platform filled with experts well above my novice skill but those who care and explain things like they would to a golden retreiver really helps. I now encourage others I know to root and am even able to show them how. I don't think they would if they had to spend the time and effort I did by coming here and reading thread after thread.
Finally, I love TWRP and will go back. Just giving it some more time as Pixel is pretty good as is. I used to love some of the themes and kernels. I can't wait to get back to them but, work, 3 kids under 10, and a wife... Well all I can say is thank you to everyone here.
Question on the unrooting, I am one of 7 or 8 people in the US who want to use AndroidPay. If I unlock and root and then relock and unroot any idea if it will work again? I know it is a tough question, hoped someone would have an idea about it.

Right now someone made a modified kernel and put in a safety net patch. I was able to use Android pay and play Pokémon Go with an unlocked bootloader. I am in rooted but have twrp installed......
I personally have not needed root yet, tibu isn't something I need anymore. The battery life is so great compared to my n6 that I haven't even have greenify installed yet.

Since they have safteynet patch kernels available, that bypasses bootloader check with android pay.
So please don't re-lock your bootloader. It's very dangerous.
