Attempting to root Verizon Note 4 SM-N910V using CF Autoroot. - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The program seems to execute, but fails after a few seconds. I've downloaded the root program designated for my model.

Sir,
Please wait until mods will move this thread to the device specific forum.

There is no method/program to root the Verizon Note 4 Retail version. The only Verizon version of the Note 4 than can be rooted is the Developer Edition.

SM-N910V
Where can I find this developer version of the Galaxy Note 4 for Verizon's network? (model SM-N910V)? I called Verizon Wireless and they escalated to managers but couldn't find it.

direct from samsung. only place you can get it and you have to act like you are a dev by filling out the form lol.
if you want it, sell your phone, use the money to put towards it. will cost you around 400-500 total if you do it this way rather than the MSRP

Currently it can only be purchased directly through Samsung's Website. I am still new here so I can't post the exact link but you can fill in the blanks.

Dev Note 4 vs Stock Note 4
Thanks for the info and link!
Let me see if I understand the differences between the dev and stock Note 4 units.
1) If getting the dev Note 4 from Samsung on VZW (part #SM-N910VMKEVZW):
a. Must fill out dev form. LOL! OK, sure, whatever
b. Can freely install any N4 ROM and/or bootloader.
c. OTA will *not* be available from your carrier.
d. Can update ROM from new OTA by getting it from a kind XDA user with same phone (Note 4), no matter the carrier (e.g., from VZW; AT&T), then merge with current ROM.
e. Samsung only carries about 15-20 dev models in stock, so user base is small.
f. It's $700US, versus ~$200 for "stock" Note 4 from carrier w/plan.
g. No warranty, except maybe hardware failure?
h. Don't bother with device insurance, right?
i. Because it can be rooted, a firewall APK can be installed.
j. Truly bricking an unlocked Sammy these days is much less likely, due to robust process, tools, and devices.
k. "Knox" - can VZW detect a rooted device?
l. "Knox" - if VZW detects a rooted device ("yes" to 2k), what can/would they do?
m. "Knox" - is there any way to prevent carrier from creating a problem for your device?
n. If the dev Note 4 is bought, do you just bring it to a VZW store and have them register it as your new cell phone?
2) If getting the Note 4 from Verizon Wireless (part #SM-N910VZKEVZW):
a. As of December 3, EMSpilot *has* found a way to root the Note 4:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/development/definitive-root-deodex-knox-free-t2962545
b. What are the odds that process survive an OTA update? Was this just a fluke?
c. It's about $200US.

I'm not even going to try to tackle the first set of questions (1.a-n) lol! but the link you posted regarding root for the Verizon retail version is not correct. That link is just for a custom ROM emspilot has developed. There isn't root yet for the AT&T or Verizon models unfortunately.
Edited: reworded "semi-custom" to read "custom". It seemed I was disregarding his work when I re-read my comment and that was not my intention at all.

@nataliegrn: I did see that post as well, and I'm very interested to see the Note 4 root method surface. I did not read that post to imply that @EMSpilot posted a working method to root the Note 4. The OP states that the device model is N910VOYU1ANI1, not the N910VZKEVZW. I read the post to mean that the ROM he developed would feasibly run on a retail version Note 4 which had achieved root and TWRP recovery. If I misread that, or mis-stated in any way, it wasn't intentional. I know that the coders are working it out, it's way over my head. Note 4 root is coming for the VZW retail. There's enough motivation by coders who prefer the overall coverage overlays for VZW networks to warrant their efforts. Anyway, I'm coping with the wait by applying copious amounts of patience. Hope this helped... ^_^

Root Deodex/Knox-Free/Debloated vs semi-custom ROM
Hmm.. So did EMSPilot "simply" download a stock ROM, remove bloat, make some customizations, and install this customized ROM to a stock Note 4?
If so, then could such a "semi-custom" ROM on a non-rooted Note 4 hold any APK/software I want to install - like a firewall? One of the main reasons I want a rooted ROM is to install a firewall, and a few other important packages.

I think his ROM is only meant for a Dev edition phone and isn't a method for root (I THINK, but here's hoping I'm wrong! That would be so awesome!). That being said, IF you were able to install it on your phone by some means, then yes you would be able to install any of the normal root or system apps one would normally sideload/install into a rooted device.

If I understand correctly, this ROM is like another Note 4 ROM he has posted. The DE images were lifted from Kies, I believe, then manipulated. IMHO, he's talking about flashing the ROM to a DE device, not a stock one. He stated, in a thread about his other Note 4 ROM, that the ROM could likely/possibly run on a RE Note 4 as long as root was acquired and TWRP recovery was installed. He asserted that he'll develop a SafeStrap version once root has been posted for the RE Note 4.
The conundrum, as usual, is VZW's locked bootloader on the RE version of the device. Same thing happened to the Note 3. However, mere weeks after the US release date, there was a reliable (albeit tedious) root method available. Then came K!ngo root and, finally, Towe|root. IMHO, it won't be long before root is out for the Note 4 as well. I'd wager it'll happen before New Year's. I'll be sniffing around plenty to see what the coders are up to in the meantime. Good luck ^_^

@SscoootzZ sez: "...Note 4 root is coming for the VZW retail...."
Really?! Wow! Every post I've read on new Sammy phones says no more rooting will be possible on retail versions, so a rooted version of a retail phone would be big news.
@brittoking - The most important things I'm looking to understand from that ugly set of questions I posted is:
1. What exactly is this "knox" thing? Sounds bad.
2. If I get a dev version, can I just bring it to a VZW store and ask them to register that phone to my existing VZW #?
---------- Post added at 04:50 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:39 AM ----------
[/COLOR @SscoootzZ OK, you convinced me to wait. It's tough, though, considering LTE on my phone has been unreliable since February, along with other issues. Whoever roots the RE will get donations from me. Let's see... $200 for RE or $700 for DE and no OTA, support, etc.
I'm guessing that OTA's could revoke root, right?

To answering your two questions: 1) Knox is security software that, in simple/brief terms, detects any attempt to write or access system files. 2) If you get a Developer Edition Note 4 and take it to Verizon store they probably wouldn't know a damn thing about it. The simplest way to register that phone to your existing Verizon number is to insert your current Sim card into the new phone and turn the phone on.

Maybe I can clarify the discussion here. EMSPilot's ROMs available in the Android Development Section for the Verizon Note 4 are not intended for Retail versions of the Note 4. Neither version of his ROM will root or install a custom recovery on a Retail version of the Note 4. To the best of my knowledge there currently is no method to root a Retail version of the Note 4.
You can root a Developer Edition of the Note 4 two ways: 1) TowelRoot by geohot and 2) Flashing SuperSU in TWRP recovery, after TWRP has been installed via ODIN (and I think there is now a Chainfire/towelroot process for the Developer Edition that will accomplish root and custom recovery (TWRP) but not sure about that).

@jpcalhoun -- Thank you!! Great info!
Is Knox on Developer phones? And if it's "tripped" does it render the phone useless?
If you install a firewall app *without* root, can the firewall block SYSTEM apps?

Knox is on the Developer phone. It can be frozen, deleted or renamed if you have root. I don't know the firewall question, sorry.

If tripped I'm not sure what happens, lol. I've always had a DE since Samsung started putting Knox on their phones and have always uninstalled it.

I've had my phone for 5 days know installed twrp and root the day I got it. Haven't flashed a room yet I didn't know you had to uninstall Knox. How do you do it freeze it in twrp?

Thanks I meant TIBU not twrp lol. Should freeze all three operations or just Knox? I would guess if you freeze Knox. I didn't seem to have any problems before I froze it. What does it do once your unlocked and rooted?
Thanks

If it has Knox in its name, freeze it. Unlocking bootloader and/or root has no impact. You won't see a difference.

SGH-I467 AT&T ROOT Method - SUPER EASY

Hey everyone!
I keep reading over and over and over the same questions: HOW CAN THIS NOTE 8 BE ROOTED?
It is very simple actually and takes a few seconds and ZERO flashing. I have read super complicated methods and this one I present to you below is BY FAR the absolute easiest. I have done this myself on dozens of Note 8's. It works perfectly every single time.
1. Download and install "SafeRoot".
2. Unpack it.
3. Run "install.bat".
4. Reboot Note when script finishes.
ENJOY FULL ROOT after a few seconds of time.
I hope this helps the many people I have read about asking how to root this nice little device.
Click thanks if this helps you out! (maybe this will be a "sticky" post so many can be helped)
Thanks!
GREAT!!!
Thank you very much!
Thanks!
This worked fine for me, and was, as described, SUPER EASY. i was able to de-bloat, but cannot find anyway to move apps to the ext SD card, as I hoped. Any suggestions?
Ok, I rooted my i467 the hard way....but, do you any news on the custom recovery yet? Thanks,

My Note 8.0 is AT&T branded, and I'm thinking about unlocking it. Does it matter if I root it ft first or unlock it first?
Where would you recommend for buying the unlock code?

I rooted first with saferoot.zip.
and later performed the unlock. There are a few online unlockers. I prefer one that does not ask for personal information and uses paypal. Just an email and IMEI number. They are all about the same cost. I cannot remember who I used, but I chose the mid price option for 1 to 2 day responce, though I got the unlock codes within an hour.

Thanks for your response. If you don't mind more questions -
1. Would rooting the Note 8.0 make the devise eligible to install Samsung Premier Suite?
2. I presume the saferoot.zip folder should be downloaded to Note 8.0, so no cable is involved. Right?
3. Would unlocking the device mean I'll be able to use sim cards from European and Asian GSM carriers and use the Note 8.0 for tethering?
Thanks again for you kind response.

No, the saferoot.zip is unzipped and ran from the Windows based PC, and you will need the Samsung charging cable to connect.
As for using UK, Canadian, and Asian GSM networks. You will need to load a modem file manually, and if using wifi edit the database with sqlite to the region and channels you are running. For example, US will have nothing listed for channels. To get 14 channels, you can change to JP and 14, and will work everywhere, even in the states.
I have not gotten that far with manually loading the modem file as of yet.
Once you root with saferoot, you may opt to install the Rootcloak app from play store, and install the needed substrate driver, it will tell you when you setup rootcloak.
Any app that does not work with root can be added to rootcloak's white list. I have not found any issues with it and it works very well.

It's probably too late to say this, but I got mine a couple of days ago and I requested an unlock from AT&T as a non-customer and they sent me one in less than 12 hours.
I'm just putting this here so that people know that they should ask AT&T first. It's free and of course it's completely legal. If you are denied, then may be you can go to those websites.
Hope this helps...

How do you request an unlock from AT&T as a non-customer?
I request an unlock as a former AT&T customer, and after several phone calls and an online request, I still couldn't get the unlock code. At first AT&T claimed I had reached maximum number of unlocks for my account, and then they said this phone/tablet is associated with another account and only the account holder can request the unlock code. Another friend of mine also requested an unlock and was also told she had reached her maximum allowable unlocks (5/year). There is no way she could have requested 5 so far this year. In fact, it's zero. In all, good for you that you could get the code, but for me, it's a very frustrating experience.

I got an unlock code a couple days ago for Note 3 as a previous customer, though I had a line for 1 day. With the Note 8.0, I called them and told them I'm not a customer but I bought a used one with clean ESN that was fully paid, so they take your email and open a case for you, after which they contact you. In both times I was lucky that they sent me the unlock code in less than a day...
This is BY FAR the easiest ROOT method available for this tablet. Over and over I still see people posting ?'s about rooting this. Use SAFEROOT. It's a no brainer and takes 5 seconds. Enable Developer Mode on your Tab. Install USB drivers to PC. Plug the tablet in. Run install.bat from unpacked SafeRoot folder in admin CMD terminal. DONE.

Doesn't this use the same exploit as towelroot? If so it has been patched in kernels dated June 3, 2014, or later which shouldn't be a problem for Note 8.0 users unless Samsung releases another OTA update.
Just be aware that rooting is only halfway there if you want to run custom ROM's and kernels. Flashing a custom recovery will still trip the KNOX "warranty void" flag if you have already upgraded to 4.4.2 even though that can be done from a rooted Android ROM using apps like Flashify.

The "official" Samsung stock ROM is still sitting @ 4.1.2 so this Root method still works perfectly when @ stock rom. You are correct in that people wanting custom roms will still need to go about loading preferred recovery methods. I offer the root method simply because there aren't a lot of custom roms floating around for this Tab and it allows for users to gain access and modify things they obviously wouldn't be able to on the stock rom. I doubt there will be any OTA for this Tab ... but you never know. -smiles-

I didn't realize that AT&T still hasn't provided the KitKat upgrade to this version of the Note 8.0. I have the WiFi only version (N5110) but I know that Rogers Canada has provided KitKat to their users of a model very similar to the AT&T version.
If and When AT&T decides to provide that update both rooting and flashing alternate firmware will be more difficult and likely to trip the KNOX flag in the 4.4.2 bootloader that voids the warranty.

Root methods.

I just bought a T-Mobile Note 3 (N-900T) with 4.4.2 out of the box and have been looking through a billion posts trying to figure out how to root it. Some of the things I read suggest that something else might have been done first, because I'm joining in the middle of the ball game. So far I think I've found four ways to root:
1. Root de la Vega (for 4.4.2?).
2. Install TWRP (Installs Recovery and su?).
3. CF Auto Root (trips Knox?).
See how confused I am? I lost the fourth way. I can't figure out if any actually work on a new 4.4.2.
My desire is root and Recovery, no custom ROM and no Kingo/Vroot.
Comments please.
Frank
I agree with you. I have been researching this subject and still not sure what to use to ROOT. I rooted my Note 2 using Kingo Android Root and that was so simple.
Don't really know if I can use Kingo Android Root for 4.4.2?

I used CF auto root. look into something called triangle away.
I plan to keep my phone regardless, and I take care of it. There's always odin if you screw up so...
I built this tread just because I have answered this question about 4 times in the last two days. It is a work in progress but I hope to help others with their rooting questions. Hope this helps and if you have questions please ask it in my thread so I can make updates. Thanks.

To OP - why don't you want to use Kingosoft?
I use Kingosoft, no KNOX trip, work just fine for almost 1 month now. Also, I can unroot easily if I want to. In my past experience with Samsung phones, unrooting can be as complex as rooting it in the first place, so I appreciate the ability to unroot easily with Kingosoft.

Just as a clarification:
You have 4.4.2, rooted with that method, and it didn't trip the Knox counter?
As far as I understand it, there is currently no way to root a 4.4.2 Note 3 which doesn't trip Knox. There is some trickery where you can attain root on 4.4.2 without tripping Knox using Mobile Odin Pro, but that process requires that you to start on 4.3.

Oh crap, I didn't know you have 4.4.2. Sorry, Kingo won't work with Kit Kat.
I have 4.3.
Once your are on 4.4.2, there is currently no way to root it without tripping the KNOX. There are several ways to root but all will trigger the KNOX flag.

Thanks for your posting and info. Read it and you go into a lot of detail.
I guess I am too lazy to try to go through so many steps to root. I personally am looking for a program that will Root without all the additional things to download and install, etc. Until that program is identified, I will remain Stock and unRooted. Personally I am not worried about tripping Knox as I keep my phones for 1 year then pass them down to wife or kids when I upgrade.

I am not worried about tripping KNOX. Is there one program like Kingo Android Root that I used on my Note 2 to Root the Note 3? If so, please let us know what it is. Thanks!
Look up CF-Auto-Root. That is a more simplified way to root. My way is if you are also looking to add a custom recovery.

That procedure is not complex. Install TWRP and it installs SuperSU as a bonus. The deterrant for some people, I think, is the need to use Odin to install TWRP. Maybe they will get that problem with GooApp fixed and TWRP installation will get easier. But if Odin is the problem then CF-Auto-Root is the same.

Don't mean to be stupid, however, CF-Auto-Root has many different versions such as:
1. hite-hitexx-smn9005
2. t03g-to3gxx-9tn7100
3. mo-moxx-fti9300
all of which are ZIP files.
I have Model SM-n900T using Android 4.4.2 T-Mobile Stock.
Does it matter which one of the three above that I would use?
I ASS U ME that I would use 1 since it is 9005?
Thanks for all your help. Maybe I am beyond help. LOL

1 is correct that is the model of your phone. *Actually SM-N9005 is the international model and sm-n900t is the tmobile variant but it should work*
If you just want root then CF auto root is good. If you are planning on adding a custom recovery or ROM I would recommend following the root options provided in the link a few comments above.

FFTony: Thank you very much for your suggestions. I have flashed roms on many of my previous phones and tried so many that it got to the point that I was flashing daily and returning back to stock. I do customize my Note 3 and have done so on many of my other phones. So, I think I will just root to uninstall bloatware. Some of the apks that I use are:
Android Assistant,
Calendar Status
Clean Master
Dolphin Browser Mini
EvernoteGo SMS Pro
HD Widgets
Kingsoft Office
MXPlayer
n7Player
Next Launcher
QuickPic
Swipe Home Button
Swipe Dialer Pro
Tunein Radio Pro
Various News Apks (News360 my favorite)
Titanium Backup Pro (when rooted and on my Note 2)
Just to name a few.
Tried many more but go back to these favorites.
So, Thank again!!!!
You are welcome. I was never into rooting until I purchased the note 3 and this is a phone that is a must to root if you want to take full advantage of all that it can do. I am also glad to give back to this community that helped me learn so much.

Totally agree with your comments regarding this community. They have helped me over the years, too.
I Unzip CF-Auto-Root and now have the following files:
TMAX.dll
Zlib.dll
ODIN3-V3.07.Exe
Odin3.ini
CF-Auto-Root-hite-hitexx-smn9005.tar.md5
Where do I go from here? I assume that I would connect my Note3 via USB and execute ODIN3-V3.07.exe.
All these unzipped files are in one folder.
Thanks again!

Yes, open Odin place the .tar file in the PDA section. Make sure you do not check any boxes on the left. The only ones that should be checked is auto reboot and F. Reset Time. Then hit start.
This conversation is growing silly, I don't know to fault the carriers, manufactures, Google, or us the consumers. This is stupid. It's our device we shouldn't need to do all this to gain certain features. I wouldn't need root if you stop putting all this bull ish on my device, restricting r/w to external sd etc just pathetic. Verizon N4-SM-N910v ROOT Method???

Is anyone familiar with this Root Method? I'm a little confused because there is still a Verizon N4 Root Bounty but I found this Root method on Android XDA. I wondering is this Root Method Legit? Will it work? Does it Trip Knox? This particular Root method claims that it will work on the Developer Edition & Regular Stock edition. I would just like to know has anyone else tried this & what where the Result? I posted a Link to the Root Method Below. Thanks Jason

Unless an exploit was discovered seconds ago, it will not work. Believe me, when it's finally exploited, the news will be bigger than The Beatles stepping foot on U.S. soil for the first time.
Kind of interesting how it does say it's for our phone. I myself doubt that an exploit was discovered without a whole bunch of people blowing up the threads about it. LOL Who wants to give it a shot?
Based on the Comments I read, Some have said it will work. One person said it failed but another commented & said it would work & he just needed to find the right firmware. I think I will give it a Try this evening when I get home from Work. If this does Work OMG!
ive been flamed plenty of times but i said months ago it wont get root. people dont listen smh
Nobody reads anymore. Once again, cf-auto-root only works on the Developer Edition!

SO Do I even act as if I know if it will work or not, NO which is why I posted here to get a Straight Forward Honest Answer, Not these Asinine Smart @$$ Comments. Sheesh WTH The OP posted in the Comments it would work with BOTH the Developer Edition & the Retail Version,
I don't see anything about it being specific to the Developer Version only. It says it's for SM-N910v and doesn't contain the developer model number, SM-N910VMKEVZW.
I do see a disclaimer on the CF-Auto-Root page: http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ that says "If you have locked bootloaders, flashing one of these will probably brick your device..." and it is my impression that the whole reason it's taken a while for a root exploit to surface was because of our locked bootloaders.
Look at the screenshots, that looks like 2 generation old touchwiz. And a random website called androidxda? Doesn't seem like a very reputable site.
The bootloader is locked, flashing CF-Autorooot will not work. This is basic stuff. Also for future reference, this doesn't belong in Android Development section.. take questions to Q&A.

I can confirm that this process works ONLY on the Note 4 Developer Edition. It will not work on the retail version no matter what firmware the user has on his phone because the retail version has a locked bootloader and the Developer Edition has an unlocked bootloader. This process will fail as soon as it tries to replace the stock recovery partition with the custom recovery (TWRP in this case).

I noticed some of what you are saying. I don't know Most of the "Basic" stuff with Android Root Methods. I can follow a Procedure to Root a Device. I don't know if this will work if this wont work etc etc AGAIN which is Why I brought the Questions to the PROS. I did look at some of this Questionably though. I also looked through the Comments & the OP posted 4 days ago that is would Work on Either Edition. I also Commented asking him again but the Comment is not showing up, maybe because it has to be approved before it will show up. The name AndroidXDA actually ADDED credibility to the post for me BUT it also made me Hesitant which AGAIN is why I brought the Question here to the PROS. As far as where I place the Thread IMO my question could go in the General Section or Android Development. I apologize for the Wrong Placement but I didn't put it in the Wrong Place on Purpose. I recieved a PM saying it had been moved & I even asked the Moderator Why because I still dont know why " Will this ROOT method work" is not a General Question or a question about Android Development. These forums aggravate me sometimes everything needs to be so perfect & in its right place according to moderators Opinions & who knows what that might be & if its placed in the Wrong spot BAM your Head is Bitten Off & you are Scolded for being so STUPID to put (blank) in that section. That is ALL. Sorry for asking a BASIC (dumb) Question & Asking it in the Wrong Place. I can only hope the Forum Gods Forgive me.
OOoooops I think I may have Broken another Rule with this Post. Dang It
THANK YOU jpcalhoun

Possible Bootloader Unlock
Okay I'm sure most of us have bricked or soft-bricked our devices. I have done so on the Note 2. I even screwed on my baseband once. This is what I tried to revive the phone.
1. Odin Stock (No luck)
2. Restore Back up (No luck)
3. And then interesting... Rooted a friends phone and created a backup in TWRP, swapped a few files and restored to my phone. (Worked) However, not only did this work, IT CLONED his phone entirely. IMEI, serial no., everything. Pretty much with identical sims- both of our phones would possibly ring when receiving a call.
With that said my initial problem wasn't solved.
So I started looking for a another method.
I found out that Samsung Kies has emergency recovery granted you have Model Number, and Serial No. of the device.
This WORKED. Good as new with exception of new 4.3 Bootloader.
So what I am getting at is...
What if we used the Serial No. of a Developer's Edition device through Samsung Kies to restore a Retail Version???
Theoretically speaking.... Kies would install the Official software for the Developer's Edition to our Retail device, Thus giving us and Unlocked Bootloader.
I only have 4 days left to return my device to Walmart.
If someone is willing to provide me with the serial number of a Dev Edition I will try this immediately.
Cheers!

I'm pretty sure this won't work because the Developer Edition bootloaders are INDIVIDUALLY signed. So, there is no way you can unlock the bootloader on a retail version...there is no Samsung "signature" for that bootloader.
Thanx for the clarification. Absolutely makes sense.
Is the SM-N910V a developer edition?
Just got one in the uk. My EE Sim works but no data, so I was gonna root it, then flash a eu rom on it. It's on 5.0.1
Thanks
Only if you bought a Developer Edition straight from Samsung......if it is a retail model it has a locked bootloader. ...so no flashing because you can't install custom recovery. Only root is temp root that goes away with reboot.

You should be able to edit the apn settings to get data to work.

Why did you root?

Like the title says. Why?
I used to root/ROM all my devices but as Android grew up I have found less reasons to. I haven't had my 6P rooted for the last 3 months at all and my Pixel isn't rooted currently. I may decide to later for the dual speaker mod though.
So why do you root? For a feature? a tweak? habbit? just because you can/feel you should as a power user?
System wide ad away, custom kernels, Xposed when it comes out, AppRadioUnchained and root Tasker. The power of root! (Can fix unforseen issues)
Ad away, Xposed and AppRadioUnchained are game changers for me, well worth the trouble of root.
Twrp is another really root, but usually has the same negative effect, aka warranty issues, but system backups are great too.
PS: Pixel has no Knox and can be unrooted 100% via flash a stock image or locking bootloader (causes factory reset) so why not?
Rooting is my way of saying "**** you" to the "man". I want full control of my phone, not just what the "man" thinks is adequate or best for me.
Adaway
Call recording.
Substratum, Swift Black theme, Titanium Backup plus all of the above.

I would go with unrooting by flashing a stock image but I would warn against locking the bootloader of a modified device. Put the stock image on and then lock the bootloader if you want but don't lock it while it's rooted, if you get into a bootloop, you won't be able to rescue if the bootloader is locked.
Not trying to pick a fuss, I just wouldn't want anyone to have a soft brick situation with a locked bootloader.
Maybe a Google store Pixel, you could re-unlock and restore from a soft brick with a locked bootloader but if it's Verizon and on 7.1.1, better not lock it while it's rooted.

I completely agree, personally, the only reason I'd do this is to return/sell the device, in which case, flashing a stock image via ADB is the way to go to totally wipe everything back to stock.
Why did I root
I had Samsung S5. Still on Alltell UDP. Used to use FoxFi for Wi-Fi on the go. I used to pay around $100 for comcast internet and basic cable. I came home one day and realized I am just stacking Wi-Fi on top of my comcast Wi-Fi. I figured why am I paying to Wi-Fi while I Wi-Fi. Then I had a decision, do I keep the comcast or the verizon. Well the verizon was mobile so that made it easy. Plus I don't watch TV other than some golf and college football. Go Spartans!! Then an OS updated caused FoxFi to stop working. My wife works from home and needs Wi-Fi. I had to figure something out fast.
I came here.
I couldn't get Samsung S5 to root, and since we needed new phones anyways, I bought 2 Nexus 6's. Best phone ever IMO. I read and studied for weeks. Only had time on weekends to figure out root. Finally I figured it out. Basically TWRP at that time. Anyways, it worked. Native hotspot and faster than comcast was.
Recently comcast threatened to kick anyone with UDP off "again". I was on Reddit trying to figure out how to stay on my plan via r/verizonUDP. There were all these crazy names for shady ways to keep your plan. Someone mentioned that they spoke to a Verizon rep and they stated they only way to be truly unlimited was to be under contract. He put up the legacy Verizon website. I went on there and was able to get mine and my wifes phones back under 2 years UDP.
By this time I was now a Nexus and soon to be Pixel guy. No way was I ever going back to any bloatware or non-stock type of phone. I realize root fixes a lot of this but with my love of the Nexus 6, I was sold on going with the Pixel XL. Let me tell you I had buyers remorse for a few months. 2k for 2 phones that were all getting pretty negative reviews. Glad I stuck with it thought. I love the Pixel XL.
I hook a bunch of people I work with up with my Wi-Fi. Network refresher was wokring for a bit. The 7.1.1 update nuked network refresher. I gave it a week or so then decided to root this phone.
Now with some experience under my belt I was able to root with CMD prompts and no TWRP. So proud of myself!!! Thank you to everyone here who has taken time to write down and explain the steps as well. Its not easy for someone who is not familar with the process and just started rooting within the past year. I realize this is a developer platform filled with experts well above my novice skill but those who care and explain things like they would to a golden retreiver really helps. I now encourage others I know to root and am even able to show them how. I don't think they would if they had to spend the time and effort I did by coming here and reading thread after thread.
Finally, I love TWRP and will go back. Just giving it some more time as Pixel is pretty good as is. I used to love some of the themes and kernels. I can't wait to get back to them but, work, 3 kids under 10, and a wife... Well all I can say is thank you to everyone here.
Question on the unrooting, I am one of 7 or 8 people in the US who want to use AndroidPay. If I unlock and root and then relock and unroot any idea if it will work again? I know it is a tough question, hoped someone would have an idea about it.

Right now someone made a modified kernel and put in a safety net patch. I was able to use Android pay and play Pokémon Go with an unlocked bootloader. I am in rooted but have twrp installed......
I personally have not needed root yet, tibu isn't something I need anymore. The battery life is so great compared to my n6 that I haven't even have greenify installed yet.

Since they have safteynet patch kernels available, that bypasses bootloader check with android pay.
So please don't re-lock your bootloader. It's very dangerous.

Yo can only re-lock it if you're fully stock, that's pretty obvious.

Questions:
Where are (or are there) mods for:
1 Call Recording (figured it out)
2 Battery Percentage in status bar (figured it out)
3 Screenshot in power menu (that shortcut with vol+power does not work for me...I can never get it)
4 Switching multiwindow and back button on bottom (like Samsung)

How did you get battery percentage in status bar? I can only get it inside the battery icon..

what are the chances of getting root on sm-g960u1?

Hey guys i preordered my s9 and was super excited because my s8 was not able to be rooted due to knox and so was looking forward to trying out some xposed mods and roms..unfortunately ive yet to see anything on how to root the sm-G960U1 variant? Seems odd because its the u.s unlocked which i thought would be more common than carrier locked ones in xda community
The odds are nearly zero. Unless there's an engineering firmware that leaks out. The Snapdragon is locked up tight.

The engineering firmware for sm-g960u has been leaked... should work on ur or be easy to tweak...

I know this is old, but I've been trying today to get root on a new sm-g960u1, with no luck at all.
I couldn't even get twrp installed... Would you be able to help me or point me in the right direction?

There is no twrp your bootloader is locked. And cannot be unlocked. If you look in the snap dragon dev section you can obtain a system mode root only.
No custom ROMs.
And what is your problem??
I just helped him to install TWRP in custom rom. He was saying that he counldn't install TWRP in his rom.
Don't disturb me without reading the whole problem.

Well the thread clearly states for g960u1 which is the US model so and your answering with twrp and custom ROMs so if this thread is for g960u1 I'd like to know how you helped him install twrp and or custom rom.
Read the whole problem

Pretty self explanatory. Unless he thread jacked and has another model
So your telling em your flashing twrp on g960u1 models? That are locked bootloader. No oem unlock. And must only boot signed imgs. Ok I want proof
If this is the case your rich mate.
Ok so I can flash twrp but the device still only boots signed images. WTH. What device are you doing this to

Again we need pics of this it didn't happen. After the community reads your posts on claims of twrp on g960u1 their gonna be all over you
What model do you have

You use sp flash tool mate? I thought sp flash tool was for media tek. Lol. Some one got a knock off s9 off wish
You must be stuck in 2012. It's not so simple anymore. Bootloader lock means it's locked regardless of twrp or SuperSU.
Did you truthfully use this method to flash my twrp to your locked bootloader device that is an s9 or s9+?
I'm gonna need some real proof before I believe that from a guy that just created his account 2 days ago and calls himself an Android app developer without a link to his github or gitlab.
I have very serious doubts about your so called method. If it really works as you claim them proof shouldn't be an issue at all to present to everyone.

Again sp flash tool is for mediatek devices samsung does not have media tek but the crappy clones or knockoffs do. So again where's the proof mate. So your saying you've managed to do what every developer has been trying to do since the s6 maybe further. The u u1 and w devices are fully bootloader locked. There is no flashing twrp. No safe strap you are completely full of crap and Im sure I can speak for many people on xda not wanting your mis information thrown about. You would be a millionaire if you did what you claim as in bypassing a 256 bit encryption signed device.
You need to just quit before some one without knowledge attempts what you claim and bricks their device. It isn't fair to the community that you don't know what your doing making false claims on obviously a device you most definitely do not own. I have all my devices listed in my profile. Why don't you?
You know 45% of android lol.
Just a couple days ago your asking if you can extract a file with 7zip and how many files where in it. Now your a bootloader unlock expert . My hat is off to you good sir

He's just a quick study and hasn't updated his profile to knowing 100% of Android yet.

Thread Cleaned
Hey folks, Just wanted to remind everyone that always ensure you do your research for what you choose to do to your device and also make sure as best you can that whatever modifications you attempt to make are backed up by evidence of success or proof of concept and there is some type of documentation. The last thing we want to see is a new help thread because someone flashed something and damaged their device. Always do your homework and always check for credibility too of said files and members.
If you see anything that looks off, please report it and avoid any conflict or confrontations out here. Good job folks and stay safe and stay home if you can!
