With all the screen issues, I'm very hesitant to buy a Nexus 7. Actually, I'd buy two; one for my wife and one for me. But, there seems to be no fix in sight for the all the screen issues. I'd rather have an 8 inch screen than a 7 inch screen, but I have no idea whether Google will produce a Nexus 8 in the next six months or so. And, Dell has their Venue 8 available for sale. It's screen resolution may not be as good as the Nexus, and it uses a dual core instead of a quad-core CPU. But, for web surfing, email, watching videos, it seems to do pretty well.
Wondering what forum members thoughts are. Will probably wait a little while and see if there are any negative reports on the Dell in the next few weeks. (All existing buyer reviews are pretty positive.)
Why do you need 8 inch? You should either buy 7 inch or 10+inch if you ask me, anything more than 7 inch is NOT portable, if you want a multimedia device to use at home don't buy 7 inch tablet. I don't have any screen issues, i think you should give more thought on what you need.
I have no idea why so many people think Google is going to make a nexus 8 when there is a nexus 7. They're not going to make a tablet from 5 to 10 just to satisfy every person who wants an obscure sized tablet. If Google ever makes 3rd nexus tablet choice it'll be larger than the 10 not in between 7 and 10.

It's a hit or miss. Why not go to your most trusted retailer and test a couple out then pick the best screen you can find.
I don't have any issues with my unit.
Not sure what "screen issues" OP is referring to. Been using mine everyday for little over a week with no probs.
Bought one at Sams' Club last night and the screen has no issues.

I can only guess that you don't know the physical size of the 8 inch is the same as the 7 inch, there's less screen border on the front.

I guess people think there will be Nexus 8 because of the pic released by Google a few months ago. It was quickly photoshop'd to a Nexus 7 after the roar on the net. Since Google actually took a picture of someone using what appeared to be a Nexus 8, a number of people, including me, expected Google to release a Nexus 8 sometime.

There's a nine page thread entitled Potential Touch Screen Fix. This forum is full of Nexus 7 2nd gen touch screen problems. It looks a hardware grounding issue. Some people are on their fourth and fifth units and still having the problems.
I'm glad your's has worked well for one week and another poster's has worked well for one day, but this seems to be a hit and miss issue. Plus, many people notice the problem after having had the unit a while.

That seems to be the only real option. At least buying locally means you won't have to mail the unit back if its defective. You only have to return it to the store.
Unless, you want the additional geography of an 8 inch screen. I guess waiting seems to be the best bet.

Gotcha, I guess I will just cross my fingers and hope that I don't experience any of the same issues. I will go ahead and look that thread up though, to at least familiarize myself with them in case they do arise. Thanks!

I have had 2 with screen issues. The first one was extremely bad. 3 spots that didn't register touches practically at all. And the second one had touch issues and rebooting when the tablet was in a case. I was very disappointed. I am going to get a hp slate 7 extreme that runs the tegra 4. I play games often and the tegra 4 beats the snapdragon in gaming. The 1 gig of ram is still fine for the hp since kitkat is going to be running on it. The screen resolution is lower than the 7 v2 but it's still better than 720hd. The 7 v2 was my first choice but I feel that I gave Nexus 2 chances with their product and they failed.
Certainly don't wish anyone difficulties with their 7. In fact, the more positive current sales turn out to be, the more likely Asus has fixed these issues during manufacturing.
My wife and I have had a pair of Nexus 4 phones for over a year, and both are performing flawlessly. I guess we're looking for the same kind of reliability with a 7-8 inch tablet.
I'd love for Google to come out with a Nexus 8, like in the "old" screen shot. And, seeing what happens in the next few weeks seems like the safe bet.
Neither of us is a gamer, so we don't need the speed gamers require.
Mine made in August 2013, totally fine.

The new Nexus 7 is my favorite device ever, and I use it hours a day even after months of having it. I'm actually glad I didn't get the LTE version because then it would never leave my side (tempting though, since TMobile offers free data for tablets).
From what I've seen on my Dell Venue 11, Windows 8 is nowhere near as easy to use or as useful as Android. It actually pisses me off sometimes, for well-known issues like battery drain and control panel. PM me if you want more thoughts on the Dell Venue.

Hi -- I've had my unit since October and I've had absolutely zero problems with it. :3 I bought it from Best Buy.
LG GPad 8.3, Google Play Edition.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Is these issue's still happening on the Nexii 7 2013? I want to buy one myself.
I got a Nexus 7 (2013) for Christmas, it was purchased from Best Buy. I already have an HTC One, and I have to say -- the Nexus 7 keeps up fine, despite inferior specs. And my HTC One feels so very small now. It only beats the Nexus 7 in sound. I was reluctant to open up my Nexus 7, I gave a lot of thought to returning it for the credit, but I'm glad I kept it now. Go get a Nexus 7!
And today's current rumor, from various component suppliers, is the Nexus 8 will be introduced this summer. (Background comments are that Google is disappointed in the sales of the current Nexus 7.)
Currently, the choices are Nexus 7 (2013) at $269 for 32 gb; LG G Pad 8.3 at $299 (street price) for 16gb but w/SDHC; or Dell Venue 8 at $179/$209 for 16/32 gb but w/SDHC. The Dell has less dense screen, but equal to the rest of the competition, and twin core CPU which is more than capable for videos.
I don't know how to "convert" std G Pad to Google Edition w/less bloatware and quicker OTA updates. If the OTA updates along from LG, and LG doesn't modify them, then the question becomes how much of delay in getting them from LG rather than from Google.
If either LG or Dell comes up with sweet deal, that might be the way to go. I'll have to keep my eyes open.
Here's the deal: I bought a Nexus 7 on September 2013 and got another one on the 26th May. A day later, rumors that the Nexus 8 is going to be released on 25th June.
Should I get rid of the my Nexus 7 and wait for the 8 or continue using the 7?
Thoughts on the rumored nexus 8 with a 64bit processor and Android 4.5?

If you want to sell it I think now would be the time since when the Nexus 8 releases you wont be able to sell it for as much. Google always improves the next gen of their devices by a lot. Also I'm guessing that Android 4.5 will be the first android to fully support 64 bit

Maybe, I'm putting dibs that it'll have the Snapdragon 801
honestly ain't worried, i use my nexus 7 as my car dash audio unit, it will be performing well for a few years.
I just purchased my Nexus 7 the other day knowing full well that the Google I/O was right around the corner. Knowing the Nexus 8 is right around the corner did not bother me.
Here's the deal with new hardware.....especially new devices with new technology....they fail, a lot, and until Google/Asus/whoever makes the device get all the kinks worked out I would stay away. First batches of new products always have issues.
Look at what you use your tablet for now? Does it do everything you need it to do? Does it do those things well? For me browsing the web, streaming from my Plex Media server, listening to music, playing the occasional game, and using the tablet in my car are all handled perfectly by the N7, no extra power needed for that The N7 will be able to keep up with most tablets and will be able to run almost every app for a long while yet

I agree, my 2013 was a big improvement in every way from my 2012, but even with an 801 anything the new one brings to the table can only be an incremental upgrade. If it is an HTC boom sound-like array it might sway me, but I'm really happy. They say it will no longer be bargain basement pricing too, which was/is nice.

We all know that android L will probably be pre installed on the nexus 6 so would you wait for the n6 or get the g3
What Nexus 6? I thought Google scrapped that project and are looking to have a Google Silver phone in the works.

Plus, you can't compare to a phone thats out now, to a future phone that hasn't even been announced yet. Its only the OS thats been announced and there using it on a ref device.only.

Wait G4
Just wait next year you can buy the G4 or the next next Nexus.
If I were you I'd wait for the LG G19 or the Nexus 28, they will be a lot better than the G3.

Hi F4M0U569. Quite a really good question - I still evaluate pros and cons. My G3 should be delivered today but I see the Nexus 6 at the end of the year.
I don't think the Nexus 6 smartphone would be a younger and slightly adjusted G3, as much others do right now. I believe, Google won't bring a smartphone reference platform - this is what the Nexus devices are - with an "old" 32 bit Snapdragon 801 when the new Android system was released with the advantage of a 64 bit system.
But if you need a new device for whatever reason (old one is defect/too slow, you're just so delighted/happy and freaking out because of this new device - like me), than just buy it. If you can wait, wait until you need a new device. Don't wait for the next big step. As soon as you have the new device, it's ready to go to the museum soon.

not gonna happen
I can only give my opinion from the Nexus 5 situation that I had.
Prior to buying a nexus 5 I had a Galaxy S4 then after switching to the Nexus 5 although a great phone I realised that it is simply a trimmed down version of the G2 with different button placement.
I the case of the G3 I think what you have already is maybe an idea of what the next Nexus may be. I know LG are developing it but specs wise I cannot see the Nexus 6 beating the G3 by much or if at all.
The only real decider is the software with the Nexus being a pure android device. But as we are on XDA I think we all understand the power of the devs and community. There will be ROMs for the G3 that will be able to provide the same experience soon enough.
My thoughts anyway
Nexus = mid range phones
The only advantage I see with nexus phones are the fast updates, so if updates are not super important for you go for the G3

The recent Nexus devices are indeed mid range phones/tablets when you think about the prize. The hardware can compete with other flagship devices at the time they're released to the market.

How is this phone transitioning into 2016 and how long should I expect to be able to use this phone until; 2 years?

It'll probably stay as relevant as the 5 just for a little less time. I just bought a new one because I needed a phone to tide me over until the next line of nexusssss

I don't think the LG Nexus 5X will stay all that relevant in the 2nd half of 2016. With VR/Daydream coming the 5X does not have the internals to properly use VR. Not enough RAM and the chip isn't powerful enough. As soon as the HTC Marlin goes goes on sale I will be buying that.

We're only 4 weeks into the 2nd half.
Mid September/early October when N officially drops and Daydream VR releases the 5X will not be able to compete.
If someone is thinking of buying the 5X now and keeping it for 2 years they'd be better to wait for the new Nexus.

Is VR so important that people are going to spend a few hundred $ more on a phone that will run it properly, then another $100 on the VR unit itself?
At this point actual reality is still cooler than virtual reality.

It will be fine. By the time your warranty goes off, you will be able to buy a last year phone for cheap. At the time all decent phones (even last year) should have 14nm soc, usb c, and other goodies
The 2016 Nexus to come after the Nexus 5X is the Sailfish, it will be made by HTC, will have a 5 inch 1080p display, 4 GB of RAM, and possible the SnapDragon 820 or 821. The Nexus Sailfish is claimed to be coming with a 13-megapixel rear snapper and an 8-megapixel front camera.it sounds like there will only be a 32GB model for the Sailfish.
So will you upgrade or will you keep the 5X or will you go elsewhere for your 2016 phone?
First thing is price for me..next is battery

Got 5X few days ago so no.
Maybe if it has a compass that works all the time and not just sometimes I will!
I got the Nexus 5X at launch, and I plan to do the same with Sailfish. I really like the 5X, but I'm in the habit of upgrading every year.
No. The absence of front facing speakers kills it for me.
i got my 5x with the project fi enrollment deal making it 199. the price tag is the only reason i bought it, so probably not. i still catch myself wanting to repair the screen on my six and taking it out and about every once in a while.
Should've made this thread a poll.
I, for one, will be jumping ship as soon as the phones are released and there are some legit reviews that highlight their strengths and weaknesses. I still owe around $200 on my N5X but I'll pay that off and get either Marlin or Sailfish. Haven't decided which one, yet.
If the specs turn out to be true then yes. And I would like it to be called the Nexus 5P if it does as it would only be appropriate.

I'll get one of each (Marlin and sail), keep the one I like best, then offer the other to the wife. If she isn't interested then return it. I love this time of year every year!

Unlike last year, I won't jump on the preorder. I might if the phone is attractive and has good battery life.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Nope. I cant buy a new device every few months. And besides, IDGAF if it has triple better specs, the 5x is smooth and customizable and has a good battery life if tweaked correctly. Buying a new nexus just for a few miliseconds of speediness or an hour extra of battery life is a waste of money IMHO.
Depends on physical size of Sailfish. I'm still using original MotoX 1053 with KK. Easily fits in pocket. Battery starting to exhaust earlier and earlier, so about time for replacement. Would love to have same phone with wireless charging and upgraded chips and software.
What does this mean? I don't understand this article.
http://motoringcrunch.com/news/2016-google-nexus-sailfish-marlin-wont-get-rooters-support/32008994/
We know that Google will be releasing two Nexus smartphones this year and that both these models will be made by HTC. Based on the details we have now, the Nexus Sailfish and Marlin are turning out to be a really tough contender. However, no matter how amazing it is going to be, the rooters will still not support the new Nexus devices.
The Nexus devices have always been a rooters go-to smartphone mainly because it comes running on the stock android and it is usually the first to get all the software updates from Google.
However, with the new safety system in place, the new Nexus Sailfish and Marlin will be useless to the rooters. According to Google, their new Android 7.0 Nougat will come with a new safety feature that will stop the device from booting up if it detects that it is being corrupted.
They also added that the system will only be available if the device comes with a locked bootloader so it is still possible for rooters to root the new Nougat OS, they just can’t do it with the Nexus
depending on the price.........
4GB RAM is so tempting to pass
