Am I alone in liking the large bezels? - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

I for one like the Idea of a little larger bezels. I always use a case and one issue I always fine in with phones that have a super thin sidebezel is touching the side of the screen with out hitting the case. On my G2 it was such a pain in the butt to get to the edge with out case interference. With my s7e it's not as bad because of the screen protruding more. But if it was flat it would be the same problem. I would have preferred a smaller chin. But the side bezels I think are fine

Exactly. I agree with you. I'm never brave enough to carry naked. I think bezels are perfect. And the chin is big. But I read where it helps keep your hand from reaching down to get to home button.

I don't have mine yet, but it seems like tapping the back button while using the phone one handed is going to be easier.

I do t have mine yet either. Just speculation and all the day dreaming I have been doing since my order hasn't moved yet

Wasted space

Yes, you are. It's a sign of lazy design, poor engineering. We make fun of Apple for all the wasted space on their phones.
With the extra space (and the exact same 5.5" 1440p AMOLED Samsung-manufactured display) they could have put in more stuff in -- like
front facing STEREO speakers,
[*]true rear camera OIS and
even microSD card slot.
(I know Google doesn't like microSD cards. I'm just saying that wasted space could be USED for something.)

You could also shave $400 off the price, only charging $399 even with all that extra stuff. Note the Axon 7 has MORE useful hardware, all placed in a slightly smaller frame, and half the price. And of course you can still hold the Axon 7 very well. Google should be ashamed of themselves.
Apparently those HUGE bezels adds $400 to the price. :silly: EXPENSIVE wasted space.

I don't have mines yet either. But I'm coming from a note 7. Not a huge fan of small bezels. But I agree that they should've at least included micro SD support in the sim tray. Also the blue pixels definitely looks like an iPod touch.

Love the large chin. Great place to hold it when taking pictures or watching video. I always wished I could get an iPhone with Android on it. Lol. So I am not a look a like hater.

Damn you're still copying and pasting this post huh? We all get that you are a major fan of the axon and not the pixel. But it is a bit tiresome to see this same exact post over and over again. Point already taken long time ago

The problem with the ZTE Axon is that it won't have as nearly of an optimized experience as the Pixel. Those cheap phones from China always have impressive specs, but poor implementations of Android. The hardware of a Pixel/Nexus phone is only half of what makes them so amazing.

In my opinion I think the bezels are to accommodate for glass screen protectors. Since companies are using the 2.5D glass for the edges and reducing bezels it's hard finding a good screen protector. This way there is some wiggle room to cover the whole screen(display). I know this was an issue with the s7 edge, note 7, s6(Sammy fanboy)
I like it personally.makes it stand out

I like them. Makes holding the device easier while watching videos and snapping pics.

I don't mind the large bezels personally. I like to hold the phone in my hand and see the whole screen without fingers touching the screen unless I intend for them to. If you don't like the size of the larger bezels then this phone is not for you, and stop complaining. Complaining isn't going to make the bezels shrink smh.

I think the bezels on the device work. In pictures it looks awful, but in person they are quite reasonable.

Ya I rather prefer it with a little lip for the case.. I guess not everyone uses a case though.
I actually like the bottom bezel being roughly the same size as the top also... basically two places to grab it firmly or hand it off to someone. It's a minor thing, but although I love samsung's capacitive back/recent buttons as far as usefulness/persistence, it does suck to hand the phone off to non-samsung users and they half the time press back and close whatever you were showing them. So I'm looking forward to it...
Think I'm kind of in the minority here at xda in that I really like most of the design/hardware decisions on this phone... I would have liked OIS, but non-waterproofing and the bezels don't bother me at all.

I'm indifferent. The phones look way better in person to me.

Google Pixel looks like HTC One A9 bezels look the same to me. only button is switched to the back instead of the front

I went and looked at one at verizon... the photos don't do it justice. Also don't really understand the obsession with the price point... it's the same that the majority of the market pays for a samsung/iphone. Is this just coming from the nexus users that are used to a lower price point?

That's pretty much my opinion too. I'm still waiting for my phone from Google but my son got one from Verizon (his employer buys) and it looks and runs great. I too was hoping for OIS but the camera is awesome from what I've seen. If you do any video recording, you will love it. I think it is a great phone but it's like anything else. If your goal is to pick it apart and find fault, you can find things to complain about. This is a phone you have to use to appreciate. If the looks or the price don't suit you, that's ok.

its because other phones in that price bracket offer water resistant, SD slot, wireless charging, dual stereo speakers, OIS and some phone manufacturer give 5 years of update at that price point. so thats why people think its over priced.
Google Pixel only giving 2 years of major updates. for that price tag. not good google.

Exactly you hit the nail on the head, most other top of the line phones include basically all or almost all of those features. Biggest thing for me is only one speaker, not even stereo speakers like the Htc 10 and built by Htc but everything was what google wanted. And no sd card really sucks but yeah google wouldnt put them in nexus either, so google has liked to be a butthead in the no sd card slot for real.
My thoughts are google could have easily added the sd card slot and made a lot more people a bit more satisfied and in the process sold more phones, but google just wouldnt give in and basically gave potential buyers their middle finger up...

Missing standard flagship features but added a yet higher price, that is what your not getting.

Most are more upset about missing features over higher price, but yeah higher price is a good point too. They can lower price but cant or wont add an sd card slot to later production units.

Spent the last week looking for somewhere to get that case!
Going to pre-order now - my lovely see through case from china is great apart from they covered the magnetic charge area which is sad news.
I managed to get the micro SD in the wrong way round for my QX10 - that was fun!
Doesn't the lens come with some form of case already?

That's pretty poor, given the price.
But I suppose when you look at the cost of the docks (including the car holder that doesn't even charge - when it could via the pins), you can see that Sony likes to maximise profits from accessories.
Even the case that lets you clip the QX10 on seems rather a lot of money, and worse still, I can see myself buying one!

The QX10/100 cover for the Z1, which Amazon said could ship as late as December, is now in stock and has shipped today to me - so I'll have it tomorrow.
I expect that once I have this cover, I might use the QX10 a lot more than I do now, which is hardly at all.
(Really wondering why I bought one now, to be honest - so I may well sell both the cover and the QX10 in the not too distant future).

My Sony ACX2 case arrived - slight problem is it does not work!
when its on the phone and set at open position - the QX10 will not attach - the problem is getting it locked in - the ONLY way I can get it to attach is when the case is away from the phone and I apply pressure on one side (where phone would be) so it can slide over the lock (far side from the locking dot) - which is disappointing.
I have checked for damage on case and camera and they are fine - guess it just does not work properly. Quite disappointed.

How are you finding the picture quality, very torn between this and the qx100. From what I have read the qx100 is a far superior device but it does seem bulky where the qx10 seems to be a nice size.

I have very mixed views on the QX10.
Here they are in a nutshell.
1) Practicality. Even with the wrist strap, it's not the easiest thing to carry about - and I am disappointed Sony couldn't bundle a simple case instead of making you pay £20 or so.
2) Pairing is slow, and there are quite a few Wi-Fi access points around my location so it means that it often pauses/stutters on the viewfinder display - and sometimes loses connection completely (not often, but once is too much if you're trying to take a photo).
3) It doesn't take incredible photos all the time - it can sometimes be out of focus and there's still a lot of noise if it judges the scene wrong. I've had a photo that looks far worse than using the main camera in auto mode!
However, if put on a tripod (or placed separately on a flat surface and detached from the phone) then it can take some incredible low-light photos.. totally noise free and, well, just wow. These are the shots that make you think it was money well spent (question is, how many of these photos will you be taking?)
4) When you connect via USB to charge, you can't access the photos on the camera directly (as a mass storage device) so you must always copy via the, frankly, rather awful PlayMemories camera app. Camera360 now supports the QX10 but it's buggy, although I expect a fix will come in due course.
5) The zoom is fantastic - no complaints there.
6) The battery life is good from what I can see - but I still worry that I'll forget to keep it charged, as it joins a list of things to keep topping up before I go out (Pebble watch, phone, portable battery pack/charger etc).
The QX100 is no doubt a LOT better in image quality, but at the extra price (and with the loss of zoom) I am not in the market for one anyway.
The QX10 is the nicer size, but I really don't know if I'm ever likely to use it enough to justify having purchased it. I hoped, perhaps rather stupidly, I'd be able to use this instead of my Sony NEX camera (even with the loss of a flash) but with the viewfinder lags, slow image transferring and so on - it's really not a viable alternative to a separate camera if you really need improved image quality, or a powerful zoom.

Perfect honest answer thanks bud. I think you are right, I was looking at the qx100 as an upgrade to my point and shoot but I think I might just invest in a good dslr. If I am out trying to snap some great pics I usually head out on hikes with that intention. I don't think these devices are quite there yet. I have been impressed with how the main shooter on this phone performs and if I need something better I might as well bring a camera.
Once again thanks for your feedback, the tech head in me really wanted this lol

I think that's why I pre-ordered the QX10 and now regret it a bit. I'd be really gutted if I'd paid the extra for the QX100 - however good the photos.
I bought the QX10 on Amazon. I ultimately returned it for the Galaxy S4 zoom but I'm not sold on the Samsung either yet. I'll post my Amazon review here rather than re-creating it.
I bought this item after weeks of review and months of anticipation. After hearing about the launch I could NOT wait for the product to be released. The price seemed a little high so I waited a bit. I purchased an Amazon Wharehouse deal (probably from someone who posted a negative review and returned it) for the QX10
All I can say is its a mixed bag.
When it works it is fantastic. It's a great point and shoot camera with very simple controls, that produces great results. I was able to capture great long range zoomed shots of a soccer game that froze the action in place. I took some very low light shots of text from 3 feet away that was still very visible. I shot stills from both the macro level and far off zoomed and they all looked great. The Sony Auto modes are just what I need. Being able to operate the camera unattached from the phone is an added bonus. Since it is so small at a birthday party I was able to hold it high over my head and basically create a "crane" shot without actually having a tripod or large piece of equipment. Then I could see over all the other people to zoom in on the shot I wanted. I could see this being very usefull at a child's play or concert to get a unique point of view. I am a photographer so I know how to adjust manually if I need to but the point of a smart phone or point and shoot is to take pictures quickly that "just work". Sony has nailed the concept.
There are, however, issues. Like everybody has said in the negative reviews the connection can be iffy. Even on my Galaxy Note II the connection was hit or miss. It was a complete crap shoot as to whether the next time I touched the NFC tag, it would Open and Connect, Just Open and fail to connect, or do absolutely nothing. This is not the device you want to rely on to capture quick action. Once connected, however, I found the software to be pretty solid. I really like the ability to transfer photos to the device. I dug deeper and found a setting that lets you transfer the full image when copying. I would only recommend this when you have time as the files are quite large. I waited till the end of the day and transferred all 200 pictures at once, which took about 20 minutes. Still, its a great option, especially for someone like me who likes to backup everything to a shared NAS either nightly or every couple of nights.
Ultimately, this is a device you want to carry around but not necessarily use all the time. Use your phone for the pretty sunset you happen to catch on the way from the office of the silly shots at the bar. You bring along the QX10 to the Baseball stadium or a wedding to get those shots you want to look better as keepsakes, or when you need a Zoom. I guess you could say why not just bring along the DSLR on those occasions, but the QX10 is MUCH easier to carry. For instance at the Soccer game, I had my phone (as always) and all I needed for the Zoom ability was to slip the QX10 into my sweatshirt pocket where it sat till I needed it. No camera bag, or heavy camera body around my neck. If you can justify the price for that, I think it's a win.
Has anyone else found the phone case with the QX10 attachment to be very fragile? I mean 3 of the corners have cracked and 1 of those has broken (a small bit snapped off!). I've dropped the phone a couple of times but from very small distances but surely the case shouldn't break so easily? And yes I'd rather the case broke than the phone before someone asks
I haven't dropped my phone, yet, but that still sounds pretty bad. I did wonder how it would stand up to being attached and removed repeatedly, so I guess I probably have my answer now.
I don't use my QX10 much, so I only really keep the case on because it's the only case that still lets me use my DK31 dock.
The Sony Xperia-approved Roxfit case doesn't, and I'm unsure what other cases are on sale that do. I do have to wonder why Sony made two inserts for the dock when the 'larger' one really isn't large enough!
I should've also mentioned that when taking a picture with the internal camera, if the flash is used it bleeds across the lens as the case is a bit too much of a perfect fit. I'm torn because despite all this I still really like the functionality of the case due to the ease of attaching the QX10. Frustration guaranteed with this case it would seem.

That's such a common problem with cases (my parents each had that issue with covers on their iPhones) that I'm amazed it still keeps happening!
But, happen it does.
I'm half tempted to go back to having the phone in no case at all, as I did for the first few days, but there's an obvious risk with this. Of course, it solves the problem with using the dock!
I got the QX100 and absolutely love the images it produces, the zoom is acceptable, low light is really good, colours are accurate, warm, sharp and the unit is easy to use, thats really were it ends.
I also purchased Z1 attachment case for AU$29 it is cheap looking, provides no protection top and bottom of phone and has sharp edges that are sure to scratch the anodizing from the Z1 side housings.
The software that pairs the two is appalling and real time viewing is inaccurate it is only when viewing the shots or video you can gauge the real quality ( I should add that the shots and vids comes out very nicely in most cases) hopefully software updates can improve upon this.
In summary (and I am no pro or photographer) the QX100 does a very very nice job of low light, artificial light and sunny conditions even in auto mode, even-though it is hard to gauge real time.
The facts are that most shots come out better than expected, is it worth $500+, hell no! but it is extremely cool and very convenient since it saves taking another device along. I would recommend this product if it were $200 cheaper or more, however, if you have money to burn I say burn! you'll love it.
Try Camera 360, which now has support for the QX lenses (and has had a recent fix for some bugs relating to transferring photos).
It still jerks as the viewfinder image is streamed to the phone, and that's the real weakness of the whole concept.

Considering a oneplus one instead...

Well this is a real first world problem. I love my G3 so far but seems like development is really slow. I'm contemplating trading it for a oneplus one. I like all the variety and software options it has. The possibilities seem to be endless just like the n5. And the oneplus looks like a nice choice as far as hardware goes too. Not sure what to do here.
I was thinking the same thing, but i doubt the LGs flagship is going to go unnoticed. Im sure the devs are hard at work with new roms, etc.
Plus, do you really want to have to beg for an invite, in order to buy the OPO?
Yeah, the invite system really pissed me off! I got an invite out of the blue on day. I didn't realize you had 24-hours to buy the phone when claiming the invite.
Anyway, I click the claim button in the email and the 24-hour buy ticker goes off. I didn't have the money at the time. I'd been waiting for that phone for ages.
Needless to say, here I am with the G3.
I have two of the OnePlus's I'm getting rid of. Not a bad phone, but i prefer the g3.
There is going to be a significantly higher rate of development for the OnePlus One than the G3 simply because it's more of a phone developers will flock to.
However, I initially had the OnePlus One and sold it to a coworker to buy the G3. I couldn't be happier.
Here were my thoughts between the two...

That's a petty good and thorough review. My biggest concern with the device is the quality control issues. I don't want to get one with a bad screen and be stuck. I hear their customer service is just terrible.
Dude just stick to the G3.

My brother's oneplus slid off from knee height (basically out of his pocket in his shorts when he Sat down) after a few days of ownership. Screen is done, 50% of it doesn't work. Light crack on the side of the phone. No damage on bezel.
I took the risk and dropped my nexus 5 a few times from similar height before my jump and it survived each one.
Food for thought.
Oh and I also had a OnePlus. While I did really like the phone, his drop and the customer support issues I've been reading about among other little things made me uncomfortable keeping the phone long term. Also the g3 being the same screen size feels a lot better in the hand. I can essentially use it one handed while the 1+ proved to be more challenging.
Just be patient? The****

OPO is overhyped crap. You should be considering the nexus 5 or g3...

Two days after I bought my G3 I got an invite to buy an OPO. So I ordered one with the though that I'd pick one and either return my G3 to T-Mobile or sell the OPO on eBay. I used the two side by side for about two days and it was honestly real tough decision. I came from a Nexus 4 then 5 so I love vanilla Android with my own added flavor. So with that in mind a lot of things really sparked my interest in the OPO once I installed slimkat and set it up. Then after using for a day the battery seemed to drain faster than my G3. The camera seemed comparable so I decided to really test them. I went out driving and while I don't suggest driving and taking pictures I did. And this is where the G3 starts to walk away with my needs. The cameras focus is so much quicker and this resulted in much better pictures. Given that I have kids and they don't stay still I need a camera that meets that need. I sacrificed camera with the Nexus phones and I want about to do it again.
And finally, I've grown fond of the buttons and and phone just feels much smaller in my hand than the OPO. The G3 is actually a little wider but the OPO is much taller. I noticed no difference with the screen resolution. However, the OPO played sound in videos very loud so that's a plus. But the G3 is sufficient in that department. So I sold my OPO and am still rocking the G3.
So. If you must have aosp the OPO will always run it better. If you want a better camera, battery life and slightly smaller feel stick with the G3.

Thanks for this, I have a couple of questions for you but first background.. I bought a G3 a couple of weeks ago. Excited I brought it home, rooted, setup and started snapping pictures of my daughter playing at night in the living room. Instantly my heart sank. They were fuzzy, blurry and overall crap. My G2 and N5 dominated the G3 quality. I continued to use it for a couple days but the picture quality in low light just sucked so I returned it. Finally got an invite to Oneplus and now have that. Camera quality seems much better in low light. Daytime out side pictures are fine with pretty much any flagship phone you buy these days, my issue is with indoor low light. I mean, I have the lights on but its not sunlight. Anyways, I am not happy with the yellow tint along the bottom of the phone nor the size, it's just too tall. Plus the lack of accessories gets me.
With that said, does your G3 take good indoor low light pictures? Does it focus fast and snap clear pictures? I'm not looking for photographer quality here, just not fuzzy and blurry. When I returned it the guy offered to exchange and I opted not to but now I'm kicking myself wondering if I just had a bad device so that is why I'm here asking you.
Almost no light at all.

Because T-Mobile refuses to make it a flashable package, the OPO will never have support for Wi-Fi Calling. That's something to consider when deciding between these devices.

It's not as simple as you think. It's not just an application. It's built into the modem, the framework, settings etc. They would have to build an update package for each phone. T-Mobile doesn't have the rights to do this. Just like with the iPhone, the manufacturer has to build the technology into the software package. So, it's on Oneplus to build it to work with WiFi calling. Just like it would have been on LG and Google to build it into the Nexus line and Apple to build it into the iPhone.
NOW, it is on T-Mobile to request this but this can delay phone release times and increase overall costs. But specifically, with the Oneplus, this phone is not sold by T-Mobile so they have not vested interest in trying to get them to include the technology.

In some cases I found the OPO to perform better in low lighting. But it was inconsistent for me. Many times, it would not focus. Most if my pictures are taken indoors without flash. What surprises me is you compared the G3 to the Nexus. Imho the G3 destroys the Nexus in low light settings.

To be honest I can't really remember the N5. I just can't remember thinking it was that bad. Plus it costs half the price of the LG. At $600 I expected way more. Maybe I'll buy a used one on eBay and see how it goes. Thanks for the response.

I think if you're happy with the OPO you should stick with that one. All these new phones are so close in regards to specs and abilities it just comes down to preference. I was so close to taking my G3 back to T-Mobile that I made it to the store to return it, but I didnt have the original receipt so I had to go home, but upon testing it a little longer I decided to sell the OPO on eBay for a small markup.
if top quality low light photos are a priority, the HTC M8 is the way to go...
I have been through a ton of phones, flagship mostly and this hands down takes the best pictures in daylight and low light situations. I have no issues at all with the camera.
The battery life is another thing, not terrible, but not the greatest. Definitely miss my flex in that regard, granted it was a bigger battery.
Overall it's a good phone.

"Look" of the device (aesthetics)

Is the Google Pixel as good-looking as you are (despite your receding hairline, adult-onset acne, and massive weight gain)? Rate this thread to express whether you think the Google Pixel is attractive. A higher rating indicates that you would even go as far to say that the Google Pixel is a beautiful phone.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Overall 4.5 stars, the white face of the phone looks a little yellowish to me. Although I love the blue back (despite the glass being an odd choice), the yellowish white front makes me wish I'd ordered a black version.
EDIT: And whoever was in charge of the notification LED should be fired. Just all-around terrible and a complete misstep considering the size of this Pixel's bottom bezel/chin, where it should've been placed instead of the tiny corner of the earhole speaker.

Yeah, I remember reading a review where the guy said there was no LED notification. But then I saw a video where a guy pointed it out.......and how f*cking small it is!!! My S6 LED will light up the room. The one on this phone looks wimpy. But i'll have mine in my hand tomorrow so maybe it won't be as bad as it looked on the video? (don't ruin my dreams, lol)
As far as looks are concerned, I don't care what a phone looks like. I'm just gonna throw a case on it anyway, lol. All I care about is the software and internal hardware. The outside of the phone means nothing to me. I would rock the world's ugliest phone if it had great hardware and software. I don't care if the phone is beautiful or ugly or looks like an iPhone. None of that matters to me. It's what's inside that counts
:\ Meh
It is a bit too close to the iPhone. Basically can't tell the difference between the two if looking at the front (especially from a distance). That being said, I love the look of it.
Parfait ou presque de loin le meilleur Google depuis mon Google One !
Understated, but gorgeous. I thought it may be too boring at first, but it's really growing on me.
I think it is an ugly rip off of the iPhone. The iPhone being a very attractive design anyway, means the Pixel isn't doing too bad. The two tone back is gross. What idiot designed the back? The front is very attractive, but the glass doesn't round off as smoothly as the iPhone's does, or that on the S7 or honor 8.
The size is brilliant and I wish it were even smaller.

Yeah Google Pixel design is innovative in today's smartphones, and the finish seems tougher than regular unibody design. But personally I feel weird to the design, it looks unfinished.
undecided
I've read a few reviews on this phone now and it seems to have a lot of very cool features and the idea of getting preferential software updates is a bonus.......and the pictures look crisp and high quality.....but i'm not sure if its really going to be worth the money (^_^)
I'm really wanting to get the Pixel...its one of the nicest Android phones out...the design is great in my opinion. just can't seem to get off my iPhone.
any note worthy accessories that come with this phone?

Well the only thing that looks like it would be really cool to me is the VR headset they will be releasing at a later time. With the high definition provided by the Pixel it looks to be one of the better phones for VR. For me though the promise of preferential android updates way ahead of anyone else is a selling point ?

Were these re-branded HTC Desires? Similar, but not close.
My good friend's daughter had one, I loved the keyboard that slid out. I had heard it was kind of inconvenient because of no OSK. I had used a Palm Treo for about 3 years, then I was given an original iPhone 2g, I have to admit I was hooked on the Treo's physical keyboard and "Blackberry" look. I knew where all the buttons were and I never had to look at it to type. I really missed this with iPhones and newer Androidevices. I guess all new phones owe some kind of design to iPhones, but I like that some makes try to veer away from that with wrap-around screens, and the huge rectangular all-screen ZTE ZMAX. If the Note 7 had been less, well inflammatory...
Has anyone seen the 6 X-Files episodes from earlier this year, they were using a few propotypes, there was one episode where a woman pulls out what looks like an iPhone, but it's an android OS. I think it was the "bandaid-nose man" ep, a woman takes a call on what looks like a Pixel phone, but it had an iOS statusbar. Then she plays "Downtown" on it while getting crammed into a trash compactor. But the front face was more like the Pixel. They may have been using an i6-style clone or a regular branded Goophone.
This video was floating around the end of 2015, showing a modular idea, but it was never to be made.

But this page shows a side-view of the Pixel phone, it's less like the iPhone 6x models and more like the iPad Mini design, with that beveled slant, my ipad Mini does that, my 6s does not:
The i6 doesn't have that, the screen is placed right on top of the case:

That phone with the physical keyboard was the T-Mobile G1, made by HTC. This was the first Android device *ever*. Initially there was no OSK but that came pretty soonish. When it came out, it was the only touchscreen smartphone in existence that supported widgets and had robust notifications. It was pretty cool at the time. I think it was also the only 3g touchscreen smartphone at the time as well.
I just got my pixel yesterday and my initial impression was that it looked like an iphone. I was a bit peeved because I ordered the silver phone, and the front and half the back is white. but I decided I didn't care because I was putting it in a case anyway so....What's up with the back half of the phone anyway why couldn't they keep it all metal? maybe RFID reader wouldn't work under metal?

I think that's another "iPhone emulation" thing because the iPhone slate gray models have the black face and the silver and rose gold etc. models have the white face. Previous to that with the iPhone 4s for example, maybe iPhone 5 as well they had either black or white in which case the front and the back were white or black and no other colors.
Starting with the 5S Apple started doing this thing where you could get silver gold and a couple of other variations in color, rather than just black or white. And then of course starting with the 6 you had four different colors I believe, three of them having the white touch screen. And then the whole 5C issue, the plastic iPhone I've never really seen anybody using those but I think those had several different colors too, and the whole device was that color. But that whole thing about the front of the device being white or black depending, that's completely an iPhone thing, I don't know why google would want to do that but I kind of like it and I like the way the pixel phones look, it's kind of like a duotone thing.
It would be nice if you could order the pixel phones in other customized colors I don't know if they will do that though.

Yeah I remember it because iPhones were brand-new and then suddenly this G phone thing came out and Steve Jobs was pissed, and went ballistic. I had never seen a real iPhone at the time, then my friends daughter whipped out the phone like is in the image and I thought wow, I actually would have bought something like that had either money at the time. But then my brother bought an iPhone and he gave me his old Treo 650, which was a great phone until my cat pawed it, and somehow broke the H key on the keyboard. That was when my brother had finally bought an iPhone 4 and gave me his original, that's when I got hooked on not just iPhones but all smart phones. That was just about six years ago and things have changed so much. My first ever cell phone was a little piece of **** Siemens phone, I didn't even use it that much except that I had a phone when I was out. Eventually Cingular gave me a better fliptop Motorola phone, and then they gave me one with the camera and it even. Actually I dug those phones because they had a little music box built-in and you could create all these weird drumbeats and you could slide sounds around and make a little songs it was great. All I remember is between 2002 and 2008 or so, there wasn't really that much change with the cell phone market except with a few of the high-end phones like the Treo, and not very many people but those because they were really expensive at the time. But then when the iPhone came out and then the androids, there has been a an explosion of smart phones the likes of which will probably never end. And these things aren't phones anymore my iPhones and my androids are part of my home network and I can hook into it even when I'm not at home.
That's why security is a pretty big issue with me too.
Sorry for the tome!

I actually purchased the phone largely in part due to its aesthetics. I actually enjoy the design of the phone: the chamfered edges, the two-tone back, and the clean front. I'd probably give it a 4.5 out of 5. There are things I wish I could change, but they're so minor, that they border on nitpicking. I wish the proximity sensors were aligned to the right of the speaker to give the front a better sense of balance. I wish the phone didn't taper downwards and was instead uniform. And I wish the glass panel on the back was made with a tougher material. It makes me a bit nervous how easy it seems to scratch according to other reviews (I've decided to put a naked skin on the glass panel of mine). Aside from that, I actually like the fact that it looks like an iPhone? I know people find that alarming, but I think older iPhones had some of the cleanest industrial designs, though I've since lost interest in the design ever since the inception of a camera hump. Oh, and this is a weird one, but I hate 2.5d screens. Those curved edges really make it difficult to add a screen protector, and I personally don't think the curve contributes very much to the overall feel of the device.
Chamfered Edges, that's what I was trying to think of, I love that!
Very Smart
I have the little pixel and it reminds me so much of a metal version of the Nexus 5. Love it! It's sexy, but terrified of scratching it.

Should I buy one ? I have some specific questions

Hello mates.
Here is the deal:
I always used android phones. I am now using an iphone 7 for 12 months now and I am pretty happy with cam, performance and haptic.
But as I wrote, I really miss android, especially now with all the new oreo functions.
I dont want to spent another 1000 EUR just to buy another phone, and I dont want to sell my iphone.
I can buy the pixel xl (new 128 gb) for 450 EUR ( thats a good price here in germany )
But I have 2 concerns, and the problem is, I can get a hand on a pixel :
Is it that thick ? MY IPhone is 1mm thinner and I really felt in love with this slim phone. Do you guys mind the thickness ? Is it still ok or does it filly a little chunky ?
The bezel on the bottom: Is it that big ? I mean, I dont need a fancy screen to body ratio, I actually like bezels because I am watching a lot of netflix on stuff woth my phones.
Could you give me just your opinion : Should the bezel and the thickness stop me from buying this awesome phone ?
thx
To be honest, I don't mind the bezels or the thickness of the phone, and I came from the Nexus 6p, which was a little over 1mm thinner. The bezels that people complain about being too big, I actually like because I can hold it between my thumb and finger without having to worry about a touch registering on the screen.
When Google replaced my 6p with a pixel XL, I had my fiance try it for a weekend, and she hasn't picked up her S8 in over 2 months since. She was hesitant because of the huge bezels as well, and because of the lack of the Samsung apps she became comfortable with (she's not into specs and all that). After a few weeks, she came home from work and said she really likes how smooth Android operates on the phone, along with the consistent battery life and lack of bloat (her S7 and S8 could be great at times, or barely breathing after a long day; each day with the same usage pattern).
I would say go for it, overall we both love it.

thank you very much for the reply
I really think, there is a reason for me to have some kind of bezels, and to be honest, i dont like the shape of the bigger screens like xl2 and s8, but this is just a personal preference
I am just afraid by the thickness, I dont want a phone, that feels like from 2010 thats all
I also planned to wait until next week for the opo 5t --- but i dont know. something os always wrong with oneplus .. camera, display .. and i guess .. there is no software or hardware problem with the pixel ..
wtf .. I am ordering now ...
Idk man, I hear great things about the op5. The one OP5t should shape up to be a great device.
I love my pixel to death, but If I were you, I'd probably wait until the 5t drops and read some reviews on it before making your decision.
Thickness and bezels are not an issue for me at all and I'm using the XL. Sure, it's a big phone and a waste of space but I actually didn't mind the design once I started using the phone.
And even stock oreo is probably the best thing to come from Google. Pixel xl runs it flawlessly.
Thickness and bezels don't bother me either. Considering you're happy with the 7plus, if be surprised if the bezels bothered your as they're nearly the same proportions. The camera is fantastic and the performance and fluidity are on par with iOS.
I have owned every Nexus device... went to the Pixel XL from the 6P....
Thinness is just good, i think theres such a thing as too thin. This phone i think its perfect balance.
As far as bezels.... Its not a big deal really. My fingers rest there when i play horizontally anyways. Its not as beautiful as minimal bezel phones nowadays, but by NO means its ugly. Its fine.
I don't mind the bezels personally either. It makes it easier to use one handed. If the screen went closer to the bottom of the screen, there'd be no way for me to reach the navbar with my thumb (it's tough now as is, but maybe my thumbs are longer than average lol).
Thickness I never pay any attention to, because my cases are all varying thicknesses anyhow.

I'm considering selling mine actually, for the sole reason of the speakers. I can't stand watching videos on it, after my last 2 phone booth had dual front facing.

I dont think the bezels are any bigger than the Iphone 7. I think the black version looks better as it does a good job of blending the bezels especially side bezels with the screen when the display is off. White version makes the bezels stand out more prominently. The new thinner, longer phones look super cool but as has been pointed out the XL is not ugly at all. 450 euros for 128GB its a fantastic price. I would suggest that you make sure it is under Google warranty as there can be some hardware fault down the road and Google will have your back covered.
Hi,
I have an iPhone 7 Plus and a Pixel XL and I can tell you that it's really hard to choose between them.
The iPhone 7 Plus is definitely thinner and you can clearly feel the difference. However the Pixel is not that thick especially from the bottom side (the top of the phone is thicker).
Concerning the bezels, its the opposite. The iPhone 7 Plus bezels are much bigger and noticeable compared to the Pixel XL.
So I actually prefer the thinness of the iPhone 7 Plus and the bezels of the Pixel XL and that's why I said it's hard to choose between them. Also, you need to know that the iPhone 7 build quality is much better than the Pixel's.

OnePlus 5T vs Razer Phone... Help me pick

First, I'd like to say it's been a LONG time since my last post lol...
I currently have an iPhone 6S Plus and it's showing it's age. If I were to go with an iPhone 8 Plus it would just be the same old phone I have. Not worth $800+ to me.
So I kinda accidentally bought an iPhone X... hated it.
I returned the iPhone X which you can read about why here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/iphone/comments/7bfm69/my_quick_iphone_x_review/
Next the Note 8 caught my eye ever since I saw it on display in a store. It was a great phone. I didn't have any major issues with it. Except for the one simple fact of managing notifications (mostly texts) on the lock screen. It was more steps to complete the same task on the Note vs the iPhone. Once or twice is no big deal, but all day long it got annoying.
iPhone -
1) 3D press on text notification
2) Reply
Note 8 -
1) Pick up phone
2) Double tap on messages icon
3) Unlock with finger print on back (my preferred form of security)
4) Swipe down notifications
5) Find the notification
6) Press reply
7) Be brought into the messages app or reply in a tiny notification box
I tried a bunch of different messaging apps. None of them allowed you to simply reply from the lock screen without having to unlock your phone and fiddle with notifications every time. The solution is to have no security. Is that really a solution?
I've owned Android before...
Samsung Blackjack
iPhone 2G
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4
iPhone 4S
Galaxy S3
Note 1
Note 2
LG G3
Note 3 (had issues and traded it for the iPhone 5S)
iPhone 5S
iPhone 6 Plus
iPhone 6S Plus
iPhone X - Returned
Note 8 - Returned
So I'd say I had my fair share of experience on both OSes.
I was very active on here with my Note 2. I really loved that phone, but again it got old and was time to move on.
My Note 3 had so many issues after only a few weeks with it I got rid of it and Apple has locked me into their ecosystem since...
However, I feel like Apple has lost it's touch. They're getting worse and worse. Consumers are becoming beta testers and the software is becoming so sloppy that I am literally afraid to update because of my phone slowing down, killing battery life, breaking something, etc...
Currently the Razer Phone and the OnePlus 5T have my attention. Hardware is pretty similar on both phones, although the Razer phone has that beautiful 120hz screen. Not sure it's worth the price difference though.
Performance is about the same on both phones since they have pretty much the same hardware. I think it comes down to personal preference as to fingerprint location, expandable storage, speaker quality, headphone jack, etc... One big complaint I see about the Razer Phone is brightness. If I'm outside and can't see the screen that's not going to be good.
More importantly to me is how the phones will be supported after purchase. My biggest fear is a company making a phone like this and then dumping support for it 6 months down the line for a new phone or giving you the run around for a warranty claim.
Can you sell me on either phone?
I was looking at both of these phones as well. Although for different reasons. I came from a Pixel XL.
The screen and battery life on the Razer were deal-breakers for me. Too dim (and LCD) and it made the 4000mah battery run like a 2800mah.
The other deciding factor was software. I knew the OnePlus would have years of excellent Dev support with the latest custom firmwares and all the tweaking I would ever want. The Razer, didn't have this guarantee.
I got the 5T and it is wonderful. The screen is gorgeous (Samsung) and it gets 8h SOT over 48 hours.
I was on the same boat and looked at the razer and the screen was just so dim, I read its like 300nits of brightness which is more than half of the note 8.
the battery takes a big hit with 120hz on.
I got my oneplus 5t coming today so can wait.
Thanks

Am in the same boat. I have the note 8 and the thing has been fast. I am however attracted by the 8gb on the 5t and razer, and am also very much undecided. Am not bothered about the price difference, my main debate is which is more faster between the 2?

Yeah, brightness is something I'd have to see for myself to decide.
How is the 5T treating you so far?

Really, the battery? I've heard nothing but good reviews about the battery on the Razer. I actually prefer LCD over AMOLED. I'm just used to looking at LCD on my iPhone. The iPhone X OLED gave me migraines.
Software is definitely a big deal. I know OnePlus has a good record of updating. Razer is an unknown and at this point that's my biggest concern.
Someone on Reddit told me the 5T got a KRACK fix already. iOS is still unpatched lol

Both should be faster than the Note 8, which I thought was pretty damn fast. I turned animations to 0.5x which sped things up a bit.
Watching some speed test videos between the Razer and the 5T they both were neck and neck as far as speed goes. Some apps were faster on one phone, but only by milliseconds.
Only thing about razer is lack of dev support at the moment and that's where the oneplus will definitely excel. Even root is not yet available. I could do without dev support but root is a must for me.

Eh, neither is a deal breaker for me. I know root on the Razer definitely will void your warranty. Judging from my interaction with Razer support so far though, they likely won't care or check it. Seemed pretty clueless about simple questions, which is kinda steering me away from that phone.
Let's just say , first day using my 5T, and I am amazed.
I've used 50+ devices in the last 4 years.
This phone is arguably a better daily than the S8.
All of the deal breakers I had in mind about the phone are gone.
The speaker sounds fantastic for a single one,
Water resistance has left my mind ,however it would be nice.
The 3.5mm jack sounds beautiful.
And the screen is wonderful.
I can't believe it's only $499!!!
I've had the G6 and S8. This phone is right there with them.
A big what if,
The camera isn't as good as those flagships. It's not bad. It's serviceable. Hopefully better with updates ?
apparently even though the oneplus 5t does not have water proof certification but tests proof it has indeed some type of water proofing.
there is a YouTube video on it.
I will have mine setup tomorrow evening.

You made the right choice with the Miata.
This is also the right choice.

Can you explain why?
The Razer phone will be basically unusable in direct sunlight.
The Razer phone will have little to no dev support.
Will the Razer phone continue to get updates for 2+ years? Who knows...
The Razer phone costs $200 more.
The Razer phone will almost certainly have no third party accessories beyond a few ****ty cases from AliExpress.
OnePlus 5t has none of these problems.
/thread imo

You made the right decision. If you ever feel down by OP5T come to Denver we will smoke some ganja and you will forget everything
I too am deciding whether I should take the 5t or the 3t. I am a student and have around 400 £. My main issue with the 5t right now is that it seems a bit to large for me. I have the s7 and would like to know if the 5t is really a big phone.
Also, do you think the camera will be better than my s7?
Thank you very much !

Pretty sure with the student discount you can get the 5T for around 400

Seems to be about the same size

I can assure you that you definitely won't be disappointed with your decision.
My last phone was a Pixel and in my opinion this 5T is a much more premium device, faster, way more features, better sound through speaker and Bluetooth, much better and brighter screen, very good automatic brightness, better battery life, better everything basically. I don't have a bad word to say about it yet and I am extremely picky.
Also i have the oneplus glass screen protector and the karbon case and the feel in the hand is just superb, everyone I've shown the phone to has been impressed with the appearance and feel of it, it's not very protective but very sleek and keeps the phone thin and light.

Good website to compare sizes, make sure you calibrate it with your current phone or a credit card.
I'm not a fan of large phones either, i hate holding my girlfriend's iPhone 6s plus, I was wondering if I would like the size of the 5T coming from the smaller Pixel but I'm not disappointed at all, it's a very thin phone and I use it one handed most of the time with no issues.
Pulling down status bar can be a bit of a stretch but there is an option to use the fingerprint reader to pull it down.

I too was interested in the Razer.
I realized, although it is first to the table with 120hz screen etc etc.
The phone is sort of like an experiment. The front speakers are a nice touch. I am not a headphone jack whore, but it is indeed a nice touch for the 5T ( quality is excellent btw)
Do not be afraid of camera quality. It's quite good. If using the GCam apk.
Also just the overall software of the 5T, you literally have almost every custom option you could ask for.
The Razer, superbly smooth screen with low brightness.
Dope speakers. Questionable camera. Great build.
We will not know about the updates with Razers new device.
With the 5T, Oreo will be here soon.

Razer is promising alot... Will they deliver? Who knows.
One thing is for sure. For their first phone they certainly hit a home run.
