Hey guys so I just flashed this rom on to my phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1175842
It looks amazing, but how do I get it to work without all the force closes?
Nils says this in the thread:
"If you choose to flash over without a wipe and have lags, FC's, things missing, or things just don't work right then flash again with a complete wipe"
What does he mean by a complete wipe? and how do I do this? Thanks everyone!
Use Rom manager(found in market) boot into recovery. You will see 2 wipe options Data and cache partition. Wipe both 3 times each. Still in recovery click on advanced. Wipe dalvick cache 3 times. Then install rom.
Full wipe

You don't need to wipe each thing 3 times; it's the same code executing, so once is perfectly fine.
anyway, like MagnaCore said, a full wipe is:
Factory Reset
Wipe Data/Cache partition
go to advanced
wipe system
wipe data
wipe dalvik cache
I think that's where they're located; can't remember 100% for sure tho.
I'd do what the poster above me said, and /system is actually in the "mounts and storage" menu in recovery.
Ah that's right couldn't remember where it was for sure. Thanks for the correction.
No problem. Always a good thing to remember to wipe, since it isn't covered by the wipe data/factory reset option. IMO it's better to be more thorough with WHAT you're wiping as opposed to doing it multiple times..

Exactly.
I usually do the factory reset, wipe data/cache, go to mounts, wipe system/data/cache again, and then go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache; just to make sure I got everything.
Bmw, you have .92 hboot, yes? You'll find force closes with this if not.

I was recently on TDJ's Darkside Rom. I decided to flash the Infamous Resurrection. I followed the instructions Wipe Flash etc. However when I rebooted almost all of my apps are still there and then they start force closing like CRAAAAZY. I know I can go and "fix permissions" however I want a FULL CLEAN INSTALL. The other rom was giving me weird issues and I am ready for something else. I use TWRP. What's up? How can I do a system wipe and cache wipe and still have most of my apps? This doesn't seem right. How can I fix this? Thanks sincerely for any help given .
You need to write your data, or "factory reset", because your apps and stuff are kept in the data partition, not the system partition. Just do the factory reset, wipe system, cache, and dalvik, and then flash again.

This absolutely worked ! Thanks so much!
I'm looking a automated way to wipe dalvik cache....any ideas
Umm why? The dalvik cache usually does not need to be wiped unless you are removing apps via file browser or terminal. As far as all your other caches (system, apps, etc) there are apps out that will do cleaning automatically.

Hmmm, I don't know any automatic way but there are two manual ways that are easy. First is through recovery mode. I use Amon Ra Recovery to do so. Usually the recovery has a section called Wipe. Be careful what you press in here. Second, is through an app called Titanium Backup. Only the pro version can do dalvik cache clean though. I bought it but I think you should stick with the recovery way.

Titanium Backup is a thought but it only gets rid of unneeded entries and doesn't do a true wipe like going into recovery. I was looking for something I could set up to run automatically once or twice a week. For me, my JB roms just run better if I can keep it wiped and was hoping to set something up to run during the night maybe twice a week.
Sorry than, I don't know any other way...

My understanding is that Factory Reset wipes all apps and user data, beside cache and delvik, so, how come I still have folders on the main menu that belongs to apps that are no longer there? Can someone explain this please.
?

Only stock recovery does that.. If you want to wipe everything you also have to wipe data with custom recovery

Hi all,
I'm attempting to get into the recovery to wipe cache partition but there's no option.
At the bottom of the recovery it says 'No /cache partition found'.
Has anyone had this issue? Can't seem to find anything online.
I also get the following error when flashing the factory images.
writing 'userdata'...
OKAY [ 2.454s]
erasing 'cache'...
(bootloader) Erasing active slot "_a"
FAILED (remote: Partition table doesn't exist
)

Please show me the way to get into the recovery. I power off my Pixel XL and then press the power key and the volume up key at the same time and nothing happens.

You press volume down and power to get into the bootloader then volume up or down until it says recovery then power to boot into the recovery.
There is no cache partition on the Pixel.
I think it's now located at /data/cache

Thanks for your assistance. I went to settings, data and try to find data/cache unsuccessfully. Is there a way of doing this or is just impossible to clean cache partition at my Pixel XL? I always thought that clearing the cache partition was good and necessary at Android phones. It this is no more needed at the Pixel phone ?

I hear you - I've basically had to do this with every Android phone I've had, mainly to keep the battery in check and to keep Google Services from running amok. I'm sure someone will find a way.

FYI, here is how you do a cache clear in 7.1+...
1. To clear the app cache for all apps, go to Settings > Storage.
2. Select Cached Data to clear all app caches simultaneously.

Yes that's not the problem. The issue is that if you get stuck in a boot loop you need to be able to do that via recovery. But, they removed that option.

Yes, yes. I think we, owners of Pixel devices, are in trouble if this issue is not taken seriously by Google.

They best method here would be to flash-all.bat without wipe to cure bootloop. Unless your bootloader is locked of course. But clearing cache is likely not going to save you from a bootloop...

Yes, that is the best option. My original point was that Google support instructs you to wipe your cash from recovery but the stuck recovery has no such option.

It's interesting, I flashall'd yesterday, with no -w. And my active partition is fine, but the other one bootloops. Have not started digging into it yet, but it is interesting. I did the flashall since it seems like the best way to keep both partitions healthy.
Now I did root the active one, no TWRP, but I can't imagine that would do it.
Still lots we don't know yet. Keeps it interesting.
Well, I can understand that Google change things with the Pixel. After ten years in Android, five Flagship phones, a Google Nexus 5 and since October 2016 a Pixel XL. With this NEW Pixel way of things I'm kind of lost here. Maybe I'm too old, but if you got something good like cleaning the cache partition, I don't want to lose it for another “good thing“. I think that we must keep the good things and add new good things without losing the ones that we already have.

You cannot clear cache partition anymore when there is no cache partition at all on Pixel devices.
"On devices that support seamless updates [Google Pixels], Android basically slipstreams OTAs as it writes the updated partitions, meaning that it can merge in changes without first creating copies. An advantage of this system is that it does away with the need for a dedicated /cache partition. It does not exist on the new Pixel phones and isn't likely to appear on future devices supporting seamless updates.
Likewise, the /recovery partition has become largely redundant. Historically, the stock recovery image was used to install OTA packages, perform factory resets, and wipe the /cache partition. Installing OTAs is now handled by the OS, and there's no need to wipe the /cache partition anymore, so the /recovery partition has been removed, as well. Since the ability to perform factory resets is still important and the Android team still wants to allow for sideloading OTAs, a functionally similar recovery feature has been integrated into the /boot image."
The cache is now stored in /data/cache thus no option to clear the cache from the recovery.

There is no cache partition on the Pixel XL. There was a cache partition on older devices, but with the Seamless (A/B Slot) partition mechanics the cache partition was moved into a directory on the data partition.
