My understanding is that Factory Reset wipes all apps and user data, beside cache and delvik, so, how come I still have folders on the main menu that belongs to apps that are no longer there? Can someone explain this please.
?

Only stock recovery does that.. If you want to wipe everything you also have to wipe data with custom recovery

Hey guys so I just flashed this rom on to my phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1175842
It looks amazing, but how do I get it to work without all the force closes?
Nils says this in the thread:
"If you choose to flash over without a wipe and have lags, FC's, things missing, or things just don't work right then flash again with a complete wipe"
What does he mean by a complete wipe? and how do I do this? Thanks everyone!
Use Rom manager(found in market) boot into recovery. You will see 2 wipe options Data and cache partition. Wipe both 3 times each. Still in recovery click on advanced. Wipe dalvick cache 3 times. Then install rom.
Full wipe

You don't need to wipe each thing 3 times; it's the same code executing, so once is perfectly fine.
anyway, like MagnaCore said, a full wipe is:
Factory Reset
Wipe Data/Cache partition
go to advanced
wipe system
wipe data
wipe dalvik cache
I think that's where they're located; can't remember 100% for sure tho.
I'd do what the poster above me said, and /system is actually in the "mounts and storage" menu in recovery.
Ah that's right couldn't remember where it was for sure. Thanks for the correction.
No problem. Always a good thing to remember to wipe, since it isn't covered by the wipe data/factory reset option. IMO it's better to be more thorough with WHAT you're wiping as opposed to doing it multiple times..

Exactly.
I usually do the factory reset, wipe data/cache, go to mounts, wipe system/data/cache again, and then go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache; just to make sure I got everything.
Bmw, you have .92 hboot, yes? You'll find force closes with this if not.

I flashed CM10 a week or so ago and I want to update to the newest version of cm10. How do I go about doing this? Is it as easy as I think? Download newest version, put it on sdcard, boot into recovery, and install from .zip or do I need to do something else? I'm sure this has been asked before l, sorry. Thanks for our help.
It's recommended to do a full wipe. Than flash the new update zip.

Does a full wipe consist of just booting into recovery and wipe cache partition, delvic cache etc.?

Anyone else know?
Preparation
Before doing the wipe, make sure you take the following precautionary steps:1. Perform a*Titanium backup*to ensure you have the latest versions of your apps saved. Its a good idea to save your internet bookmarks here too.2. Many apps have a backup/restore option so use this to back up your current settings (eg. JKay Deluxe settings, Go Launcher, Fancy Widgets, Simple Calendar etc.). Do this for such apps so that the settings can be easily restored later if required.3. Make a Nandroid backup through CWM Recovery.Be aware of any contacts with personalized ringtones etc. as these will have to be re-assigned after the wipe. There are apps on do download from the Play Store that can save these for you however.
Full Wipe
Boot into recovery
Wipe Data/factory reset
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik-Cache
Wipe Battery Stats
Format /system

I am a super-noob coming from an un-rooted HTC Sensation and I have an S2 coming in the mail that should be rooted within the night I get it. One of the things I hear a lot is the importance of wiping before you flash. What data do you lose from each type of wipe? For instance, if I were to wipe /dalvik, would I lose app data, and /cache lose something else? Also, how do you get yourself out of a SOD?
Thank you. I look forward to the flashaholic world.
Any cache wipe doesn't wipe any data from apps... You should probably look up "cache" for a general understanding of what it is.
Wiping data/ factory restore, will..well...wipe all user data meaning bringing it back to factory. Your sd cards (int/ext) doesn't get touched unless you choose to wipe then. Emmc is your internal btw

Wipes get rid of all data! DOES NOT REMOVE ANYTHING ON SDCARD!!! It also Wipes the cache partition.
I was recently on TDJ's Darkside Rom. I decided to flash the Infamous Resurrection. I followed the instructions Wipe Flash etc. However when I rebooted almost all of my apps are still there and then they start force closing like CRAAAAZY. I know I can go and "fix permissions" however I want a FULL CLEAN INSTALL. The other rom was giving me weird issues and I am ready for something else. I use TWRP. What's up? How can I do a system wipe and cache wipe and still have most of my apps? This doesn't seem right. How can I fix this? Thanks sincerely for any help given .
You need to write your data, or "factory reset", because your apps and stuff are kept in the data partition, not the system partition. Just do the factory reset, wipe system, cache, and dalvik, and then flash again.

Factory reset to remove user data. Will wipe intsd if on stock recovery.
Use Odin to return to stock. This won't wipe data.
Your question could be worded better, I think. Did I answer your question? Not entirely sure what you're asking.
In CWM:
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik cache
Wipe data factory reset
While in Cwm:
Go to mounts and storage
Format data and /data/media (/sdcard)
Flash rom
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik cache
Doing those steps will completly wipe the internal storage and when you boot the phone up everything will be as if you just unboxed the phone and started using it for the first time.
You can double check after flashing the rom, reboot device and skip all of the options in the setup wizard, then go to settings> storage and see how much memory is available.

May leave a dirty trace if not done properly. Wipe a few times to be sure.

Thats why you double check, by going to settings> storage afterwards.

Also if you do double check by going to settings> storage, afterwards just boot into recovery and wipe data/factory reset, wiping cache and dalvik cache is optional.
