[Q] What information do wipes get rid of? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I am a super-noob coming from an un-rooted HTC Sensation and I have an S2 coming in the mail that should be rooted within the night I get it. One of the things I hear a lot is the importance of wiping before you flash. What data do you lose from each type of wipe? For instance, if I were to wipe /dalvik, would I lose app data, and /cache lose something else? Also, how do you get yourself out of a SOD?
Thank you. I look forward to the flashaholic world.

Any cache wipe doesn't wipe any data from apps... You should probably look up "cache" for a general understanding of what it is.
Wiping data/ factory restore, will..well...wipe all user data meaning bringing it back to factory. Your sd cards (int/ext) doesn't get touched unless you choose to wipe then. Emmc is your internal btw

Wipes get rid of all data! DOES NOT REMOVE ANYTHING ON SDCARD!!! It also Wipes the cache partition.

i had facebook problems with 2.1. when i flashed 2.2, i wiped everything. system x3, boot x3, dalvik x3, factory reset x3 in clockwork mod recovery. if you flashed 2.2 without wiping all that, id reccomend that (x3 is times 3) and a fresh install. 2.1 kept telling me to sign in to facebook. may be unrelated. just my experience.
After a little research found out it was an app. There is an app called airpush detector in market that told me what app was sending Airpushes so I just deleted the app and messages stopped

I had not seen the x3 recommendation for reformatting system, boot, and dalvik. I would think reformatting a filesystem more than once should have no additional effect.
in all honesty, im pretty sure that one doesnt do anything additional, but i accustomed myself to it before i understood. at this point, i figure it cant hurt.

It won't hurt but it's silly redundancy. How often do you format your PC when you do a fresh install? Once? Twice? 3 times?
When you format the access to every single file is gone. It can be recovered but that is why secure wipes are done and these are not secure wipes. But from a filesystem perspective, you format once it's no longer there. There won't be remnants sticking around as some have suggested. And on android doing the main wipe data/factory reset handles formatting data/cache/dalvik/datadata.

Thanks for the clarification Tiny!
the next time i update my rom, i will wipe it all just once. should make it a bit faster of a process. thanks for the input tiny.
Yeah... I never understood the whole wipe x 3 thing... Seemed like redundancy to me too. I always do a wipe and reset, wipe dalvik, then format system under mounts and storage in CWM and I have never had an issue flashing a new ROM

how to wipe system

some roms ask that you wipe system as well as the normal things. ALl i see thats close to that is format system. is this what theyre talking about? i just wanna make sure before i do it in case it messes up my phone.
What recovery are you using? There should be options to wipe data/cache.

latest cwm
is that the same thing as wiping system cause it said to ipe data and cache then the dev seemed to make an effort to mention to wipe system too. heres the rom.

Format removes the partition, wiping all data, and creates a fresh system partition in it's place. I always choose format all(except sdcard) when switching ROMs that use a different base: I.e. GB to ICS, AOSP to SENSE, or even different sense versions(2.x to 3.0 or 3.5). If any doubt, just do a full wipe of cache and dalvik, then format all and you'll be safe.

[Q] Questions about wiping before flashing

I was recently on TDJ's Darkside Rom. I decided to flash the Infamous Resurrection. I followed the instructions Wipe Flash etc. However when I rebooted almost all of my apps are still there and then they start force closing like CRAAAAZY. I know I can go and "fix permissions" however I want a FULL CLEAN INSTALL. The other rom was giving me weird issues and I am ready for something else. I use TWRP. What's up? How can I do a system wipe and cache wipe and still have most of my apps? This doesn't seem right. How can I fix this? Thanks sincerely for any help given .
You need to write your data, or "factory reset", because your apps and stuff are kept in the data partition, not the system partition. Just do the factory reset, wipe system, cache, and dalvik, and then flash again.

[Q] TWRP Advanced Wipe

Okay I'm still fairly new to android, not even a full year of using it... So I'm a lil confused with.
If I'm installing a new rom, but don't want to lose my app's and don't want to dirty wipe, what do I wipe. I see TWRP has changed a bit since I last used it before trying PhilZ Andvanced Recovery.
I see this new Advanced Wipe. So what would I wipe to keep my app's?

Would I just leave System and Data unchecked? Just what is in Cache, is that where, sms, calls, calendar's and contacts are stored? Or are there things in the other folder. Also yup I know to uncheck External SDCard and USB-OTG Unless I want trouble and headaches. LoL
Oh yea, I'm using 2.5.0.1
Thanks!

Yes but then I accidentally wiped every single thing on internal. haha! Staying all over from scratch. .. Oh well live and learn, at least this rom does the correct Google Play restore... I use Super Backup religiously!
But I was wondering more about TWRP Advanced Wipe options and what would be the proper combo wipe for keeping my apps but not being a completely dirty wipe... If there is such a thing? I wasnt concerned with traditional backup apps and methods, plus if I might be jumping from rom to rom for a couple days I wouldn't really wanna take a half hour outta every flash to restore and backup everything all the time.
Just wipe cache and dalvic and that will keep your apps.

Should I also wipe system? Since thats whete a lot of build mods and that way 1 mod doesnt counteract with another mod but instead making things a lil more clean smooth and run the way things are intended to run.

That should be fine. Whenever I install rom a go clean. I wipe internal sd then system, data, dalvic, cache.

I wipe everything but system/ media...
And always have a clean flash....g
Yea just as I thought whenever I'm gunna do a dirty flash I'll do dalvik, cache and system. I tried it without wiping system and a totally new rom and there were ghost app's so to speak that were non-existent and couldn't be found.
Yep. .
Wiping the device is almost always mandatory. ..g
Data is the option you leave alone if you want your apps settings accounts etc left alone, if your going TW to TW it's usually safe to leave your data without worrying about FC's but if your going from like aokp to TW or CM etc where the file system changes you should clear Data as well. Just backup your important files using TB, and don't restore with data
Hope that clears it up for you.

System + Cache + Dalvik should be mandatory wipes prior to every flash.

[Q] Dalvik Cache

I'm looking a automated way to wipe dalvik cache....any ideas
Umm why? The dalvik cache usually does not need to be wiped unless you are removing apps via file browser or terminal. As far as all your other caches (system, apps, etc) there are apps out that will do cleaning automatically.
Sent from my daughter's CLONED Og Evo using xda-developers app
Hmmm, I don't know any automatic way but there are two manual ways that are easy. First is through recovery mode. I use Amon Ra Recovery to do so. Usually the recovery has a section called Wipe. Be careful what you press in here. Second, is through an app called Titanium Backup. Only the pro version can do dalvik cache clean though. I bought it but I think you should stick with the recovery way.
Sent from my PC36100
Titanium Backup is a thought but it only gets rid of unneeded entries and doesn't do a true wipe like going into recovery. I was looking for something I could set up to run automatically once or twice a week. For me, my JB roms just run better if I can keep it wiped and was hoping to set something up to run during the night maybe twice a week.
Sorry than, I don't know any other way...
