When you hand your phone to granny to take a photo of you, can she get the job done? Rate this thread to express how you deem the Google Pixel's camera software. A higher rating indicates that the software is easy to use, fast, uncluttered, and inclusive of advanced features for when you need them.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
To sum up , This is a no compromise camera!
Coming from a Moto X '14 which had outstanding camera software I'm disappointed with the Pixel. You could do almost everything one handed on the MX14 from zooming in/out to taking a picture by touching the screen. Just yesterday I realized that I can't draw on pixel photos either. Hoping they add some usability features because the hardware is great.
The pics looks nice and crisp to me after I take them, low light detection still sucks like most other cameras. Colors are decent and hold up when I display them on a 4k monitor. I must say I like the speed, when I want to capture a moment it takes the pic right away. When I get close to an object it actually focuses where my buddy's Nexus 6 had issues with that. It seems like an improvement but there is still some features they can add. One handed operation would be nice.
When on home screen, Google assistant always detect "ok Google" even though I have turned it off in settings... Serious privacy concern!!... Does this really hear me fart!
Any solutions?
Even, I can see that the phone is never in sleep state and is always awake..
Any help?

The pixel is not physically capable of displaying 4K video, so that's probably why you don't get that option.

Is there any benefit to playing 4K video on a lower resolution display? Maybe you could perceive a difference in 4K video on a 1080p 20" or larger screen, but I don't that's the case on a phone. Just seems like a waste of bandwidth at that point for google and the end user.
I have a nexus 5x. I didn't realize that there are differences now. Before to just flash twrp su then you are done. I read there are 2 slot sorts something so twrp needs am IMG and zip.

no it can not. it can play downscaled video to 720p but you would get no benefit over watching the original 720p video.

There is no zoom option with 1080p. No biggie -- I'm not seeing any real difference in quality between 1080p and 720p anyway, and you can zoom plus the files are smaller.
I noticed the video was zoomed in more than the camera, but now i see the 1080p looks like its croped from the center of 720p video, or just zoomed way in ,
This seems backwards from tvs and pc screens shouldent the 1080p have the widest field of view , put your pc moniter on 800x600 and then on 1920x1200
the highest resolution has more screen space.
our phone displays may have somekind of scalling bug or wierd crop factor that changes
Need to export videos to pc and check if its still croped.

1080p is pretty much useless on here, I feel that it was an afterthought. Seems the 720p has a bit of stabilization, and overall just looks better.

Exactly why I made this thread. Also, watch your two videos and notice how far zoomed in the 1080P video is compared to the 720P. I also have many issues with quality of 1080P, which is why I leave mine set to 720P.
Wow, I am extremely grateful for this thread. I just tested 1080p vs 720p on my phone and 720p seems to have some great image stabilizing and the bitrate looks higher than 1080p.
720p has IS, zoom, and looks so smooth. Couple that with the bitrate hack and you got yourself one hell of a camcorder.

There was a thread created before about this so I investigated. I have came to conclusion the 1080p is better quality. And of course better quality full screen. Watch each file at it's naive resolution. I have a dreamcolor display at 1920x1200 so I can definitely make the call on what looks better. This is my opinion on my findings.

The other issue I have found with the camera is that the settings don't survive a reboot. What's the point of editing the shortcuts if you have to redo them every time you reboot the phone or quit the camera app.
On the OG Epic, I could set the camera to black and white and it would remain until I changed it. However, on this camera, I have to set the effects every time I use the camera.
I would say that the camera is sorta flaky. Anyone know if this happens on the other Galaxy S2........

Thank you!, I can't wait to try it out when i Root my phone.
Did the 1080p get fixed I'm in Fi27 blukuban ,and the 1080p is not zoomed in anymore.
Edit, my bad I must of zoomed its still the same. I must of zoomed in the 720 then compared it , so I tricked myself
One thing I find very annoying is the frame rate temporarily freezing during panning. To say its annoying is an understatement. It drives me crazy! Even qbking's 1080p video test of the note 2 is horribly affected by it. I don't remember if my 4s did it but you couldn't change the resolution at all with it and it certainly didn't look like full res on a 1080p TV. I think it might have had the stutters too but not as bad as these phones. I loved the audio gain circuit in that phone. It wasn't easily over driven like Samsung phones are. Those where the few things I liked about it, everything else was a pita.
Hello,
Im looking to upgrade my Nexus 5 and ive been going through lots and lots of reviews, videos, pictures of many of the new phones out right now. Z5, S6, Nexus 5X.
I really like the Nexus 5X despite some of it shortcomings but one thing i REALLY have a hard time accepting is how shaky the picture is when recording video compared to iphone 6s, Sony Z5 and others.
Here is a video showing it against the Moto X pure:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_zth08zFLw
The Nexus 5x i horrible Is that something we will just have to accept because it lacks OIS or is it possible to fix software wise in a camera update or using a 3rd party camera app. I must say that in its current form its unusable.
Regards
Jacob
indeed it is shaky...
haven't tried it but this one has video stabilization - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.sourceforge.opencamera
Maybe someone with a nexus 5x could try opencamera to record a video and post the result?
Yeah I was hoping 1080p would at least get decent software stability. It has enough pixels for it. ?

Just my $.02. It was my understanding from the Launch event that it doesn't have image stabilization. Something about how it didn't need it with the upgraded light gathering capability of the camera.
The Moto X pure doesn't have OIS either, it's done in software
I'll just splurge for a gimbal. LOL

Just tried it and it seems decent. Good thing is that OpenCamera properly implements the sensor orientation detection, so the preview and resulting files are correct. It has experimental support for Camera 2 API, which needs to be enabled in order to expose the EIS setting.
At high resolution (4k), there's significant lag that's recorded in the videos with the EIS enabled. Google did say the 808 couldn't handle it; maybe they weren't just blowing smoke?
At 1080p, it seems to help reduce the shakiness by a fair amount; it's no OIS replacement for sure, but I'd say better than not having anything.
Funny how google said larger pixels negated the need for OIS. Did anyone really believe them? Did HTC not try the super mega sized pixels before?

OIS is only really of benefit for photos at shutter speeds less than 1/60th second, unless you have a zoom lens, where it is helpful at higher shutter speeds, as the more you are zoomed, the more amplified any body shake is. For smartphones with their wide angle view, camera shake is not too much of a problem for most typical situations, and any daytime scene OIS is completely pointless as the shutter speed is plenty high enough to freeze out any camera shake. The larger pixels help as the ISO can be higher without too much noise meaning a faster shutter speed can be used.
For video the situation is different as images are taken over time, so it's the movement in camera position between each picture that needs to smoothed, although the fashion these days on most documentaries and TV shows is to deliberately shake the camera around until it's a nauseating mess with whip zooms into the mix Still it's a good indicator I find for knowing the program is trash and not worth watching :victory:
OIS in smart phones helps a little with video, but the tiny lens optics and limited movement means they don't do nearly as well as a dedicated camcorder with OIS, which gives some amazing results. The link to the stablised 5X video is using a $300 device, so if anyone is that serious about their smart phone video, then for that money we might as well take a much bigger step in image quality and convenience and features and get a dedicated camcorder.
The elephant in the room with the Nexus 6P is EIS, this is the poor mans image stabilizer, yes it does help stabilize the video to a certain degree, but to do this it has to crop the image. It appears to be doing this the cheap way in software (hence needing the powerful chip), taking a 1080P video, then zooming into so it can have a window of view to pan around in, this means the resulting video has less resolution, see the clips here https://youtu.be/HV4rcFuUlUc?t=246 and compare the detail between the two, there is a drop in resolution on the 6P. Better EIS systems capture a larger image at the sensor, then would track and pan a 1920x1080 window across it so no resolution drop, but that requires more low level work with the camera hardware and dedicated chips to do a good job.
Record a 1080P video with the 5X, upload to YouTube and get it to apply stabilization and it will do the same thing, may even turn out better than the 6P EIS as it doesn't need to be done in real time so a bit more care can be taken.
Will the 6P stabilize 4K video? I somehow doubt it has the power to do that, so for 4K it's an even playing field between the two.
Regards
Phil

Hmm, aren't those phones using the much higher resolution of the sensor (at least about 4k) to stabilize the video by changing the captured frame on the sensor corresponding to the phones movement? At least i thought that's the reasoning why this works only up to 1080p (which would be preserved, in that case).
I think this could be quite useful for the next Nexus http://techcrunch.com/2015/01/09/imint-wants-to-bring-real-time-video-stabilization-to-android/
I’ve been struggling to get a clear answer from Sony official support team on why when I run a simple screen test by three different applications I get 1920 x 1080 (~403 dpi) or less on my E6883. They claim E6883 screen has 2160 x 3840 pixels (~806 ppi pixel density) resolution. That’s what I though we get on Xperia Z5 Premium. 4K was one of the main reasons I bought this phone. In reality, as the actual screen resolution, I get regular HD.
Here is what they (Sony) say:
“Thank you for contacting Sony Xperia™ Online Support.
The information you requested is presented in the link Agent Argelia provided:
http://blogs.sonymobile.com/2015/10...our-4k-display-technology-questions-answered/
Now to talk a little about your question, the resolution on the screen of the Xperia Z5 premium is 2160 x 3840 pixels (~806 ppi pixel density) meaning that this is what the screen is capable of presenting.
Now as explained in the link above, the full 4k resolution is only used for certain content and applications that are able to use this resolution, This means that in normal operation the phone displays content in HD1080 (Home screen, certain images, settings screens, games, screen captures and certain apps).
Now if you open and app that renders in 4k the app will make full use of the native resolution and you will be presented with full 4K images: Certain video streaming apps, YouTube, Streaming video, VR videos and full 4k videos downloaded from sites or with third party apps that are able to download full 4k video from YouTube.
I myself use a third party app called Tubemate that allows me to download 4k video and then play it with the album app in the phone. (4K videos will have a white "4k" mark in the album preview thumbnail. So far the YouTube app still does not have the capability to show 4K video) Although you can view 4k video from YouTube if you open the website in chrome and then in settings (in chrome) you can request for the Desktop version of the YouTube page. (The resolution settings will then let you choose 4k)”.
I could understand all the playback explanations. However, I am talking about displaying 4K on the screen that is ONLY capable to render in 1920 x 1080 (~403 dpi) according to the testing apps I tried. How is it possible? I start thinking real 4K resolution in terms of DISPLAYING (not recording) is a faked advertisement. I wonder if someone has come across the same issue. Would be glad to hear your thoughts!

this is just like how Apple do their Retina screen. They upscale the software resolution into the real 4k hardware resolution. so yes it is a real 4k screen, but only rendered 2k most of the time. do you think it's such a waste? maybe, but i'd like to see it as a feature rather than a standard. when you have that 4k video, such feature will be usable. Same as the CPU, you only get most of the core working when you need it on gaming.

But the Dev had to 'fix' the screen resolution properties for the Z5P in the app (check the most recent changelog). It wasn't being detected via the usual checks. This is what causes some people concern or confusion when they investigate.
If you want, I can make you an app that detects 8K, or 16K, or "insert your desired resolution here" K.
All folk need to remember is that the Z5P does have a 4K resolution, regardless of what apps say

Believe it or not, after watching the video you posted earlier, by Erica Griffin, I had a second thought that left me with a bit of a residual doubt. In that video, the only "evidence" of actual screen testing she said was ADB readings when resolution switched from HD to 4K. However, she never SHOWED those reading. Given that her videos are quite professionally shot, I don't see why not show the actual ADB readings to us. Technically we're only left with her words. I guess we have to take them
I'm actually more concerned with the physical screen; does it really have enough pixels to be considered 4K capable of DISPLAYING a 4K content? Still in doubt...

When in doubt, use microscope or something and count.
4k would be 4 times the amount of pixels compared to a 1080p screen. Dividing the pixels on Z5p with a 1080p screen should give us 4, (3840x2160)/(1920x1080)=4

One could do their own adb and get the readings themselves if you question someones findings. Notice no one has done their own or let alone debunk what she has said. Even MKBHD said in some apps to you see the switch happen. My guess is some apps based on resolution you will see no change at all because the content itself isn't 4K.
Here's some other evidence that the screen is 4K. There's a lot more out there a simple search could find.

Sorry for responding to this thread but let's let it die right now. Yes it has a 4K display.

It seems now the screenshots are in 4K Resolution
Your friends are never going to believe what you did. The only way to prove it to them is with that video you took. Rate this thread to express how videos shot on the Samsung Galaxy S11 come out. A higher rating indicates that videos are smooth (and not choppy) and that auto-focus works very well, and that the camera adjusts quickly to different lighting conditions while recording.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Not really a fan of the 8K video quality especially at low (maxes out at 24fps) frame rates. What do you guys think?
It's.... fine. 24fps is cinema rate, so it's more intended to be used with a stabilized mount and slow panning, so that accounts for a lot of the jutter. Well, that, and YouTube's compression algorithms, but I won't hold that against the camera. 8K isn't likely to be really useful for a few years yet, so honestly I am fairly impressed the the quality is as good as it is when the camera is still.
Video capability is on par with iPhone 11, and blows Pixel out of the water. If you do a lot of video recording, this is currently the best Android device for that job.
I would say the video quality is quite good.

Keep dreaming! ??
I have taken video with this phone and the quality is very high and clear. I think you have a good resolution camera.

Well done ?
Does anyone know or has tried to record 4k 60fps continuously.
What I mean to ask is, if recording 4k 60 fps, is their any limit to the record time or can you keep doing so until you run out of space or battery.
I'am coming from an Sony Xperia devices, on their there is no limit apart from the memory card or battery.

Thanks for your reply, so I take it there isn't a time recording limit. What about 8k recording?
wide angle cam stabilization test
here's a sample footage to test stabilization of the wide angle camera on a very bumpy trail. i say stabilization is excellent.

Question: Why can't the pixel 6 pro shoot in 5-6k? It can shoot 12.53MP and 4k is only 8.3 MP.
Thanks,
Probably due to the pixel-binning, which results in a quarter (IIRC) of the maximum resolution of the camera (~48-50 MegaPixel).
Well my question is why cant we hit 5k? 6K should be 16.6MP.. Pixel 6Pro is 12.53 so that should be a bit over 5K (5k is around 12.45MP)
Ok we talking about video capturing right?

Yes.
The phone is theoretically capable of recording 5K. I would love to see a camera mod to do it somehow.

Yea theoretically is capable even more sensor is not 12mpx its really 50mpx and after processing came 12mpx photos even from main camera sensor but......its about resolution/fps/ bitrate ...and all depends of cooling system and capabilities of processing of chip in phone and how wee know cooling is not what is good on pixel 6 pro
I'd love to know if any dev's could chime in.. afaik timelapse is definitely possible oat 5k.
this is likely because nearly no display that displays 5K, it doesn't make much sense to support a format that is barely used

Well I'd love to get more quality out of my video. Apple makes a 5k display, and for editing purposes 5k would be nice . I like to get some shots of nature sometimes. I just wanted to know if it was possible.

Yea timelapse is definetly capable of much higher resolutions ....and its good question becouse for now we know in future will only produce 8k tvs and 4k minimum monitors .....i think phone is capable of 1080p 480p slow mo why they dont use this who knows

That's not truth pixel count and quality was always much higher then actual displays like before decade was 16 and higher pxl Fotos and no digital monitors or tvs to show....some people have same argumenst s like you ...same with 1080p when come some people still telling wee dont needed lots of people looking on videos on tvs and most of them have only Hd tv so we dont needed right now ...what? I making memories and those memories i would like to have in best possible (reasonable ) quality what i can make with good format for future .........for example imy first tv vas plasma only 720p (in real was 768p ) but doesn't matter important is i was looking on 1080p movies and making 1080p videos l... And they look much more vetter because if you're looking on content like 1080p on 720p tvs you actually getting better quality and better looking image because its working like antialiasing or super resolution on AMD cards or whatever other metod they named and this metod ....its used in videogames for years for better image quality and its much more visible on video(moving picture ) then on just stable frame but its still visible and its make sence to only some quality like its doasant make sense looking on 8k on 1080p tv but its make sense watching on 4k picture on 1440p monitor or watching 1440p video on 1080p tv .....so 5k video on even 4k tv or monitor still make sense.

Exactly. I have been recording 4k video since Note 5 I believe.
Look up Motion Cam on GitHub. It allows you to shoot RAW files (stored in the DNG format) at the cameras full resolution.
You'll probably be limited in the frame rate and length you can record and you'll need something like Davinci Resolve, but I've messed with it and gotten good results.
