didn't find the answer through search. if i installed an sd card and used it as an sd card and not an extension of phone memeory, can i remove the card and copy the files to my computer. install a new larger memory card and format as internal memory then drag and drop the sd card files from my pc back onto the phone without a problem?
Yes. Just turn the phone off when you take out / insert the card to be safe.

I have a rooted phone with an 8gb sd card in it where i store clockworkmod recoveries, backups, ROMs, many apps, media of course etc etc. So if ever I were to change the SD card in the phone, what is the correct procedure to do so such that I don't screw up the phone?
Has anybody else gone through this recently? Reason I ask is I am going to order a 32gb sd card (I believe up to 32 is supported) shortly.
Thanks
Nothing bad happened to me. My 8gb card no longer works so I had to replace it with my 2gb that came with it. There's no procedure with swapping sd cards in the phone, but you may wanna copy all the contents of your previous card to the desktop of your computer and transfer them to your new 1. If you reformatted your previous card to fat32 then do so with your new one. Pop it in and let it rip.

Thanks! Seems easier than I was afraid it might be!
Soo, just copy and paste and put new card in? Is that it?
Yes, 32 Gb cards are supported. Make sure the new SD is formatted FAT32.
Don't remove or install any SD while device is powered on - unmount the SD, then power down to remove/reinstall SD.
Copy contents of old SD to PC so you'll have a backup - then copy to new SD, put in device, power on.
Noteworthy is if you use an AOSP ROM, many of those interact with SD during boot, so if you simply replace old with new and it isn't formatted FAT32 and/or do not have the contents of the old card on it, you will bootloop.
Recommend making period backups of SD to PC - monthly or some frequency meaningful to you ~ so you have a backup if/when SD card fails.
I switched my SD card with a friends to put some files on it for him but even a restart it displays the contents of MY SD card in Windows. I know its not the internal storage being show because it says its 32gb.
Hello,
IN recovery under mount and storage menu, there is an option format/SD card?
My question is that, will this format the external SD card or will it format the internal SD card ?
I want to make sure, because what I want to do is format my external SD card.
I tried formatting the card with my PC, the phone still can not see it.
My 32 GB external card , doesn't show up. Maybe If I format it using the phone, the phone will be able to see it.
thank you in advance
If your phone can't detect the external memory card, how can it format it? You'll end up formatting the internal card. Looking at my settings, I do not think the phone even allows you to format the external card from the Storage menu.
mmm. ...... I inserted an 8GB card in it, the phone was able to detect it, but when I insert the 32GB it can't see the card.
Any ideas what the issue maybe?
What's the best way to switch out your sd card without losing any of its contents. My best guess would be to:
1) Copy contents of old sd card onto your hard drive
2) Remove old sd card
3) Format new sd card
4) Copy contents of old sd card from hard drive to new sd card
Am I missing anything? I've read that FAT32 is recommended over exFAT? Has anyone heard different? Also, is it better to format the card using your PC or should I just format the card in my S3?
Hi,
I recently switched from an 8gb sdcard to a 16gb sdcard. I put everything from the 8gb on my computer hard drive, safely unmounted via storage in settings, then just popped the new one in, not messing with format or anything. a month later and I'm doing fine.
Hope this helps
I would recommend formatting the sdcard in a PC, if possible
If not, then do it through your phone
And yes, the procedure you have laid out is perfectly fine
Hi! I have a Sprint LS992 LG G5. I have a 200 GB SD Card. I can't save any files to my phone via the SD Card nor write anything to the SD Card. If I try to download something to the SD Card or have an app write to the SD Card, it will error out. I can, however, transfer files from computer to the SD Card. Is there a possible other pathway in the file explorer to access the SD Card? Currently, using Solid Explorer, my SD Card sits on /storage/BBF5-E792. Any thoughts?
Thanks!

You can save stuff to the sd card. You have to download whatever your downloading and use your stock file manager and move it to your external card. Other file managers will not work.

I downloaded things to internal memory and then was able to move it using Solid Explorer. It is such mickey mouse bull**** that you can't just download directly to the SD card. I only have 32 GB of internal memory space (which isn't enough) and having to move things from internal storage to an sd card is cumbersome and tedious. If you (or I for that matter), figure out a way to directly download to the sd card (which may mean using solid explorer to find another file name path to the sd card) I'll let you know!
