October update causing random reboots on 5X? - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I installed the latest monthly (October) patch update to Android 7 yesterday morning. I got a random reboot yesterday evening and just got a second one 10 minutes ago. I've had this 5X since it came out and have never had a random reboot with it before, hell, the last time I experienced a random reboot was with my old Nexus 4 running Jelly Bean.
Anyone else?

no issues here. most likely its because of an incompatible/not up-to-date kernel, rom or app. so what is your setup in detail?

100% stock.

I would not worry. For whatever reason after an update there is a chance 5x will do couple restarts for no reason. Its rare occurence so it just happened late for you, but had sometimes since i always tinker the phone

Phone Contantly Rebooting - Epic 4G Touch

I have a problem. Yesterday, my phone started rebooting randomly. It's been happening almost every time I use the phone. I rooted and flashed the Calk E4GT 2 4.0.4 ROM about a month or so ago and have had no issues to speak of with it at all. I disabled the facial unlock because I noticed that the reboot would routinely happen with either I was trying to unlock or put the phone in standby or while I was trying to use it in some way.
In the past I had noticed similar behaviors randomly, but never became a persistent issue. Anyone have any ideas as to what the culprit could be?
If I need to reload...how do I go about doing that? Just pick a new ROM and flash from CM to start from scratch? If so, what's a good ROM that is 4.0.4 based to run with....Cyanogenmod?

I'm having the same problem with the stock ff18 rooted...started out of the clear blue, can't place my finger on a consistent pattern. I'm gonna try installing a new kernel and see if that helps. If it works I'll let you know.
I disabled facial recognition security and cleared dalvik and normal cache with clockworkmod. My phone hasn't rebooted basically all day so far.
Something must have been stuck in the cache possibly that was causing issues.

[Q] How long does your GNex take to boot since upgrade to Jelly Bean?

My Verizon LTE GNexus now takes 3min and 34 seconds to reach the lock screen.
I'm thinking a 'fresh install' of Jelly Bean will speed it up, just like a mandatory fresh install of Win XP at least once a year.

Randomly, my phone will take 2-3 minutes booting as well. 90% of the time its stuck on the Google logo. Other times it boots up in under 30 seconds. Doing a fresh install of the stock roms does not solve this. Neither does installing a custom rom.
Does anybody actually ever shut their phone off? This phone is so good it doesn't ever need a reboot either, so if it took 10 minutes it wouldn't matter to me. I hope you get your phone issues resolved.
Yes. I reboot it from time to time and occasionally the phone reboots itself. It's not a major issue, just an annoyance.

To me a phone that reboots itself is a major issue. I think your phone has some big problems.
In my past experience, dirty flashing causes random reboots. And some kernel/ ROM combinations and different kernel settings can depending on set up. I had the looooong startup time after upgrading to JB too, Jelly Belly and AOKP, but since flashing CM10 (CM kernel) it's damn quick. 30 seconds top every time.
DarkPA 2.50 with the latest jellybean radios and bootloader. From the initial boot vibration @ the Google logo until the lock screen takes a max of maybe 45 seconds. Usually around 30 seconds. Always nice and quick for me. I usually always run Franco milestone 6 kernel and I always clean flash. Never ever dirty flash lol

No, not at all. If anything it's better. Really the only time I've ever had reception issues with the Gnex was the few weeks I was running JB with the ICS radios (before VZW JB radios were available).

This is exactly what I'm running into. I thought I installed the update.zip wrong (I used OTA Rootkeeper, which also saved me from reinstalling CWM) because I didn't wipe before the update, but apparently everyone is running into this issue?

every time i flash. so, its at least once a day
i havent since 4.1.2 was released officially
flash 2 to 3 roms a day so reboot alot lol
I used to not reboot unless things started to bog down. Since I switched to AOKP, have it set to automatically reboot every night while I'm sleeping.
Only when I flash the CM nightlies or new roms, otherwise never.
Didn't reboot often on CM. After switching to AOKP, it tends to get sluggish every couple days, so I reboot and it clears it up.
Whenever there is an update on the rom or kernel that I'm using. It may take from just a couple of days to sometimes weeks, depends when the update comes.

I usually reboot once a week or so...once things start to seem slow (on stock). On my old g1 it seemed like every couple days I'd need to.

I'm having reboots while using Chrome. For example, if you go to the Play store and attempt to manipulate that navigation box in the upper right corner Chrome either crashes or causes the Nexus 7 to reboot.
Kitkat will fix it

ASUS you suck. Google please use Samsung for your devices k thx..
I still have random reboots on my unmodified Nexus 7 2013. I've been running KitKat since it was OTA'd to the device a few weeks ago.
It is excellent when I'm in the middle of something and the screen freezes for about 4 seconds, then the device reboots.
EDIT: Hilarious. It randomly rebooted on its own just now. The device had been sitting unused for a number of minutes. Usually doesn't happen more than once/day. It just happened twice in 45 minutes. Usually it happens about once a week...
Anyone have any update/luck with solving it? I'm making a nandroid backup just in case the worst case is I need to have it sent back to the store for a replacement..
I posted this in another thread, with someone asking if a custom kernel will fix the reboot problem plaguing this otherwise superb device. It seems to hold its relevance here.

So, here's my experience with this. I bought my first nexus 7.2, at a best buy in north Dallas, in October. I experienced random reboots, right out of the box, about once a day, usually when I was browsing chrome, or when the tablet was sitting on the home screen without being touched. My gf bought a nexus 7.2 as well, at the same store in November, and she was not experiencing any random reboots, hers has always been stock, to this day (my suspicions began). I figured it was a software, or app problem, and waited for a fix from Google, or my app developers. Tried various custom Roms in the meantime (cm11, dirty unicorns, silmrom, and many more). I also tried various kernel's, in combination with said Roms (Franco, ElementalX, glitch, bulletproof). I had random reboots with all combinations of Roms and kernels. Did a factory data reset after every update from Google, and tried it for a week or so every time. Still experienced random reboots. I finally got fed up and took my table back in early January, to the same best buy in north Dallas. After receiving my second tablet, I kept it stock for a week, and then restored my preferred twrp backup, that I had taken with the rebooting tablet ( stock 4.4 krt16s, xposed framework, ElementalX 2.2 @1.7 and 450, with the motoX dalvik and bionic patches). With the new tablet, I have not experienced one random reboot, either with the stock software, or the custom software.
So, long story short, if your experiencing random reboots, if you have the ability to, I would take it back. Maybe you can fix it with software enhancements, but IMO it just shouldn't do this, stock or otherwise, and warrants a return.
Whatever you choose to do, I hope it works out for you, the reboots were personally driving me crazy, and I'm glad my second tablet doesn't reboot like its got a mind of its own.

With my personal experience, it definitely seems to be a hardware problem.
Thanks for reminding us. Seems to be a hardware problem. Mine still random reboots intermittently. Usually when it does, it will happen maybe 2-3x/day, then go a few days without happening at all. As is the case with me, it happens most often while sitting at the home screen, not in use. I've always been stock.

Same thing with me ... hate this problem, it make it unreliable especially for work and collecting data ...
Mine has been doing it lately also. I noticed it happen the first time about 2 weeks ago. It has done it on 2 different ROMS.
mine does it as well - as well as two other friends of mine who have the same exact models, all purchased at different times. it must be a device issue. there is no point in returning your device if its randomly restarting because youll just get another one that does the same exact thing.
however the longest uptime ive gotten so far was 200 hours with franco kernel r12 and then opened chrome and got a reboot.
also the same thing happened on my nexus 5 in the same day, maybe it was just an incident with google chrome. both devices rebooted.
but im having better luck without random reboots using a custom kernel (franco r12).
I turn off my device every night, so I do not have any random reboot issues. I think a simple restart every 2-3 days will fix this issue
You should always reboot a wireless device MINIMUM once a week to clear out useless data and avoid problems.
Nexus7 2013 Random Freeze ànd Reboot
Old thread still relevant. My Nexus 7 (2013) 6.0.1 randomly freezes and self reboots. Problem doesn't occur in Safe Mode. I don't know how to determine whether or which app(s) are causing the problem. I don't want to Reset until I've tried other ways to troubleshoot cause. Help welcome.

Screen Flashing When Locked

My screen flashes when the screen locks. It does this for a bit and then just randomly stops doing it, until it starts again. I've contacted Google and they won't let me do an RMA saying it's a known issue and should be fixed in a coming update. Anyway else have this issue?

Well I'm running the April update and the flashing issue returned today again. Still no fix. Ugh.
Mine started doing it after the April update. I started uninstalling a bunch of apps (like rotation control) thinking it was causing the issue. But nope...

Not happening all the time. Does it for like 10 mins then stops for a week or two before randomly doing it again.
It's infuriating, as people keep thinking I'm taking their photo. Anyone heard anything more about a fix?
Long discussion in Pixel product forum. No fix helped yet. I have heard that Google isn't allowing replacements because of the flashing; which hopefully means that they are working on a fix.
We'll have a new security update in a few days - I have everything crossed!
My XL started doing it today. Think I updated yesterday to the 5 May patch.
Just rebooted and it stopped. But I'm sure it will return

Same here... Good so far.
Any updates on this? Still good on P beta? I have a brand new 2 xl (Literally 5 days old) and just started experiencing this today. Should I just wait for P to release or should I go back to the verizon store and get a replacement?
I just picked up the XL 2 yesterday and my screen started flashing today. Called Google support and they said it is a software issue and that they are working on a fix for it and will roll it out in an update. Seems rather strange they've heard about this for 6 months and still no update as of yet. My bet is that this "fix" is Android p.
