I have a problem. Yesterday, my phone started rebooting randomly. It's been happening almost every time I use the phone. I rooted and flashed the Calk E4GT 2 4.0.4 ROM about a month or so ago and have had no issues to speak of with it at all. I disabled the facial unlock because I noticed that the reboot would routinely happen with either I was trying to unlock or put the phone in standby or while I was trying to use it in some way.
In the past I had noticed similar behaviors randomly, but never became a persistent issue. Anyone have any ideas as to what the culprit could be?
If I need to reload...how do I go about doing that? Just pick a new ROM and flash from CM to start from scratch? If so, what's a good ROM that is 4.0.4 based to run with....Cyanogenmod?

I'm having the same problem with the stock ff18 rooted...started out of the clear blue, can't place my finger on a consistent pattern. I'm gonna try installing a new kernel and see if that helps. If it works I'll let you know.
I disabled facial recognition security and cleared dalvik and normal cache with clockworkmod. My phone hasn't rebooted basically all day so far.
Something must have been stuck in the cache possibly that was causing issues.

I have been having an issue with my phone shutting down on me. When I put it in sleep mode, and after a while try to turn it back on, the phone is completely shut off. The only way to turn it back on is to pull the battery. When it is plugged in, it never does this-even in sleep mode. This is also not ROM specific, it has happened on several different ROMS. Does anyone know how to fix this issue? Thank you for your help!!!!!!!
If you're using setcpu, raise the screen off clock speed.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am using set CPU. I looked and can't find that setting. How do I get there?
I am getting the same thing on different ROMS. Specifically the latest Midnight and Syndicate ROMS, which are the only two ROMS I have ever ran. It just started this out of no where as well. I was running Midnight for over a week with no issues, and then yesterday it started shutting off multiple times. So, I wiped everything three times, and flashed Syndicate last night, and then this morning it started doing it again. I just Odin'd back to stock, and am going to see how it runs before rooting and flashing again. I would love to hear what could be causing this issue.
I've been having the same issue. I've had it with the latest Syndicate ROMs, Bonsai ROMs, and Midnight ROMs. It's been very frustrating as I've only been able to reproduce the issue after using the phone for a day our two. It only happens when on battery power and when the screen has been off for several minutes. I've always ensured Set CPU is set to minimum 200 mhz and I've also had the issue without set cpu installed, so I don't think that's it.
I've been doing lots of testing to determine what might be causing it and so far I've eliminated the kernel and ext4 as the culprit. I think it must be some relatively new tweak that all the custom ROMs are implementing. My latest theory is perhaps the NCIQ tweaks.
Thanks so much for the input. Hopefully someone can figure this thing out

I experienced the same issue, and reported it in the Bonsai 4.0.1 thread, as that's the ROM I'm using. I would defnitely like to know about the solution, as it is quite frustrating when this occurs and it does not allow using the phone without the battery power cycle.

Data corruption
I, have found it is best to fully wipe everything.
I installed srf and got freezes and random reboots.
Then i installed cm7, and re-flashed srf from that not a problem since.
This issue has been discussed before, and i suggested this remedy to fix the ailments.
It is tedious but it works just fine.
Not sure what the problem is, but you probably came from an EC05 stock rooted ROM.
I think that is the underlying cause of these problems.
fully wipe your phone 3 times wipe everything flash cm7 ,you dont need to flash the gapps then flash srf or bonsai and watch them run.
I've been on ICS with my Epic 4G Touch (CREDO, but Sprint's network) for a while and I really love it however the last 2 ROMs I've used have had this problem where my phone restarts itself seemingly at random. I remember seeing somewhere that it could be because of having the 4G on too long and the phone restarts itself? This seems silly to me and I feel like it's not the problem. The most recent ICS rom I have (Blu Kuban) disables 4G at startup and I feel like this might be why. However after searching through this forum and the threads of the ROMs I had the issue with I can't seem to find any information that anyone else gets this. The CM9 Alpha 2 and 3 I tried didn't have this issue, but when I switched to Mijjah74's MIJJz BLEND FE10 and RUJELUS22's The Blu Kuban FE10 (I also tried updating to FE16 kernel and modem same problem) I get this restarting issue where my phone will be tethered to my laptop and then not. I have an updated Gingerbread rom I've been considering testing to ensure it's not my hardware however I figure I'd ask on here and if anyone had experienced similar problems and if there is any kind of fix other than turning off 4G. Thanks!!
Hot reboots have been a nagging thing ever since I started messing with custom roms. There are so many variables its not even funny. Just make sure that when you are testing its always from a clean start. Bad data, kernel issue, rogue apps - I have seen it all cause hot reboots.
You seem to have the right idea keep trouble shooting but remember it should always be from a clean install. Also you should try and fix permissions as well since that has helped me in the past.

Yeah always from a clean start (EL29 stock rooted CWM5 ----> ICS rom) I saw all those warnings, if the ROM gets another larger update I'll keep clean installing. Glad I'm on the right path. When you say fix permissions, what exactly where are you talking about? Could it be a program that's accessing part of the phone while it's locked and in the confusion my phone thinks the best course of action is a total restart? Such a silly pocket computer teehee.

Go to the market and download an app called fix permission. It fixes any mismatches with your system to keep everything running smooth. I usually do it through a custom recovery on GB. Quite helpful
I just recently installed CM9 alpha 6 on my Epic 4g Touch but ever since my phone restarts so much! Its just super buggy and it acts as if im holding down the power button showing the options for Reboot, Airplane mode, etc. After that it restarts. It will does this almost constantly to the point where the phone is barely usable. Anyone experience similar issues? Any suggestions?
Using it the last few days w zero issues. Which one are you using and how did you flash?

I just installed it myself yesterday, but all has been good. I haven't had any of those problems. You probably should download it again and flash it again.

Really stupid question, but did you use "Calkulin's_FORMAT_ALL_for_E4GT" zip file before flashing CM9? I only ask because I have had issues in the past with other roms by forgetting to wipe everything beforehand. Even the savvy tech could forget something sometimes :silly:
I'm running the exact same ROM. I underclocked mine down to 800Mhz to save battery and it was causing constant restarts. I moved it up to 1000Mhz and they stopped. If you tried messing with the clock speeds that might have caused it
OP, did you fix your problem or did it just go away? I recently flashed mine to cm9 alpha 6 and am having the exact same problem. Never has this phone had problems before.
For the past 4 days my Note 2 has randomly rebooted at least once a day. I wasn't using the device for most of the reboots and just noticed that it rebooted because of battery drops. I don't really know what could be the cause since I don't remember changing anything recently. Is there any way I can diagnose this without root?
How about just flash stock rom? If you dont have lots of apps which you've used, then it should take care of problem without needing titanium backup which needs root. Just save ur data using kies and flash stock rom from sammy.

I'm actually currently on stock and unrooted. I was just wondering if there were ways to find out what caused the reboot such as logs and such? Or if there was an app I could install to keep track of what causes a forced reboot?

You could download alogcat from the marketplace, its free and will save a log of what's going on with your phone.
It might help find out why its happening
for me it happens cause the power button is so easy to press while phone is in pocket.
keep it pressed for some seconds by accident and phone reboots. even if screen is locked.

If your rooted run a logcat and that will tell you what happened right before the reboot, reboots are usually a Kernel Panic meaning something caused a big enough problem that it couldn't be recovered and crashed the core of Androids software "The Kernel".
As others have noted flashing a stock rom ideally via ODIN and then testing your phone may let you know if you had bad software or a hardware issue. Custom roms can have bugs that will cause kernel panic a stock rom should be 100% fine and reboot free
I find mine will sometimes reboot after copying something to the clipboard.

I had reboots on my previous unrooted HTC EVO. The problem was an app. I was able to diagnose the problem by looking at my install/update log. Basically, I uninstalled all apps back to the date I knew it was stable and waited to verify it was stable. Then added back one app only and waited. Repeat. About a week later, I added an app that caused a reboot within hours. I uninstalled it and the phone remained stable.
Here's where I found a chronological listing. If you have multiple devices, it will show all apps for all devices (tablets, vizio, phones, etc)
Google Play> My Android Apps> at the bottom My Orders & Settings.
This gives you a cronilogical listing of app installs and updates.
Mine turned out to be a call recorder app that I had put on the phone 4 weeks previous.
Seems like a Samsung issue:

I've got the same problem worth my note 2. At least I know I'm not alone.

Bad SD cards are also a notorious source for spontaneous reboots. If you have one inserted, it should be easy enough to retract it for a while to test it. ..
Note'd too from my N7100...
I'm also experiencing this issue. I'm using 4.1.1 Brazilian stock ROM here.
Even before flashing CWM (yesterday) I as going through this problem. Most times it happens when the screen is off.
Maybe changing the stock Kernel to a custom one would solve this?
I've been having gn2 from at&t for about 2 months. It's awesome in most respects but it sometimes locks up cold. By cold, I mean that the only way to fix it is to pull out battery for some extended time - 5-10 min. Usually it happens when I use some software, typically accessing network. Just now it happened when I used Chrome beta.
Also it happens sometimes after graceful shutdown that it locks up immediatelly on boot.
Seems to happen with any rom that I tried.
Does anyone else have similar problems? I wonder if it's hardware defect.

I was experiencing lock ups on earlier 7105 ROMs I was using. I thought power cycling was the only way then I discovered if you take out the S-pen (and then put it back) it would unfreeze the device. Maybe give that a shot next time, in case its similar.
Mine would freeze randomly...

I have never had a problem with mine, but it is still stone stock. That will be changing shortly tho...
I haven't had any lockups per se, but I've had 2 random reboots. I've had the device a week. Rooted, on stock.
I've had this phone for 5 months roughly. It has never locked on stock, Clean ROM, CM 10.1
It really shouldn't be locking up ever

Mine used to do that. Turns out the problem was Superuser. If you have Superuser, and not SuperSU, installed, try switching them and see if it clears up the lock ups.
I would also get weird notifications about "shell" and "radio" trying to get root access.

I have SuperSU. And I am on international rom. But it did the same thing with CleanRom.

I had this problem on my SII.
My girl had this problem as well. To remedy it first I wiped the external sd card. Wiped everything off of it incase of some bs data.
Then I wiped and re flashed the rom and only restored mms and the call log with tibu. The rest of the apps she had I manually installed them one by one from the market.
Now doing the above two cleaned up a lot of lockups but it was still happening. Final thing that actually stopped the freezes was getting rid of Chrome. Why was Chrome causing issues, I have no idea but after removal the phone never randomly rebooted and after getting use to the stock browser it's been smooth sailing.

Edit: sorry just for reference both my phone and hers are running SkyNote 6 with the 6.7 update and the saber 13.4 release.

Chrome definitely may be a culprit. It happened to me often when using it. What is interesting is that it wouldn't reboot unless battery is out for few minutes. It feels like some memory state , perhaps in modem, gets corrupted and isn't cleared during boot.
And it was happening at times with freshly flashed rom with full wipe.
I have this issue too. I know for sure it is ROM or Kernel related as it never does it if I revert back to stock ROM and Kernel. Mine seems to be in a really deep sleep when it happens. I hold the power button for about 15 seconds and the phone reboots and everything is fine for a few days again.
