I recently experienced really bad image retention issue with my LG G4 (and my wife's V10 but that is for another forum). It was so bad that even if I use any of those burn in fixer apps it just keeps coming back. It would go away when you turn it off but come right back within 5 minutes of using the phone.
In any case, I had it replaced for free since it is still under warranty. I'm worried now that it may eventually come back again because it seems to be common to the G4 (and the Quantum IPS screen phones)
My question is:
1. Has anyone else experienced image retention? Is it a common G4 issue? How can I avoid it?
2. For those that has experienced it and had their LCD replaced, did the issue ever come back?
Thanks!

Hi, i have the same problem but i found a very easy solution. All you have to do is install sfilter(or any other blue light filter, and no retention anymore, even if u keep it as low as 20 or 30%. I did the same, i keep my filter at 20% and no ghosting what so ever no matter how bright the screen is. And the second i turn it off, all hell breaks loose. I have an lg g4, but i am sure it will work on any ips display. Hope it helps ?

Hello, I am new here. I have same problem with the display on my LG G4 H818.
1. First instal from Gplay: " Galaxy Nexus Screen Diagnostic " . Now Test your screen with "repair custom" option. If leave 5 minutes on this screen test, images retention will disappear. This is first good sign.
2. Instal from Gplay: " Blue Light Filter ", for recognizing, icon is a 1/4 yellow moon ?in blue circle. Developer is Leap Fitness. This is my try. You can test another blue light filter and test.
3. Go to activate blue light filter from button, and set:
-Color temp to 3200k;
-intensity to 10, is enough and it works fine for me;
-screen Dim to 9%.
4. Optional, for better color contrast: Go in phone settings/ general tab/ accessibility/ vision / screen color adjustment / actiaye from button and move the cursor down a half centimeter. For me is enough this setup.
Hope this is helpful for all. Thanks

I've been having a a bit of a strange bug with my GN...
When i unlock and open for instance messaging app to look at SMS's...i see the screen dim a lot and come back again. If i open up settings screen dims like an LCD panel with no backlight. If i click back, screen comes back again or if i lock and unlock screen, all is OK.
I've done some fiddling about and it only seems to happen on apps with white backgrounds i.e. messaging, gtalk, gmail etc. If i open dark background apps i.e. phone app, settings or gallery it doesnt happen.
But for all those other apps when i launch them, screen appears to flicker (dim) and come back again...messaging is the only one where it dims completely in settings.
Has anybody else noticed this?
And more wierdness...in the messaging settings menu, if i scroll to the bottom the brightness goes completely and then comes back again, and starts flickering a lot...
maybe i'll try turning off auto brightness and see if it still does it...
I've had a couple of customers come in already saying they always felt like the brightness was on notch to low sometimes or just very dim. Considered it user error, just got my nexus in the mail and after set up brightness just dropped randomly to almost nothing...
soooo guess we'll see
ah well still did it with auto brightness off
wonder if i've got a borked phone or if others do it and they just dont notice...
EDIT: if anybody's interested in seeing it i've just uploaded a vid here
And i know i still have the front screen cover on...havent wanted to take it off yet!
Restored stone to factory settings this morning and i've not installed anything else or changed any settings (other than turning off NFC, wifi and mobile data)...and it still does it.
Think i might have a defective handset then...annoying though, it's only 2 weeks old but the place i got it from states
Phones that are faulty out-of-box as determined by our warehouse can also be returned for an extended period of up to 7 days from date of delivery.

So if i can't get a replacement out of them, what are the odds of samsung replacing it for a new handset?
Hmm pretty sure it's hardware, set desktop picture to something quite bright/white and sure enough when i was scrolling through the 5 homescreens brightness was flickering from one to the next...
What are the odds of getting a replacement handset after 2 weeks? :|
I had this same issue when I got my phone. I had a yakjuwx build in my phone.
Ever since I flashed over to yakju I haven't experienced it.
You may want to check and see what you have.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
Mine is already running yakju from new :/ I might try re-flashing it tonight though just for the hell of it.
Is this not a bit weird that it happens only on bright/wight screens/backgrounds/apps? And that it's suddenly fine when you lock the screen...
If it was a laptop i'd be fitting a new panel to it but then i dont know what amoled's are like (especially combined with a light sensor)
Nope, still does it after a re-flash :/
Got a replacement handset now...
Like my first one, it was one of the early opened and re-sealed with samsung label handsets (and they hadnt put the battery door on properly, fingerprint on the SIM card slot!)
But anyways, waiting for the OTA update on this one
It's obviously running ITL41D and no OTA has come through yet whereas on my first handset it came through pretty much straight away.
Would the fact i've already had the OTA on one handset stop this coming through? :|
Hi,
Factory reset - done!
Flash Android 2.3 - done!
I had the original Android 2.2 before, so the software is not the reason for my HTC Wildfire display problem.
Display image is moving up/down, the line of notification with signal, battery level..., is going in the middle, bottom of display and so on.... I have a screenshoot and a picture made with a very bad mobile camera, but hope to be enough!
I think few water drops inside 3.5 mm audio jack could be the reason, the warning LED(red one) is not working too.
Had someone the same issue? A way to fix this?

Someone else also had a similar issue. Here is the link.

but not sure if both cases are the same...
Cheers
...menu bar is floating from bottom to top, pushing all icons/options and it is nearly impossible to hit the right icon/option. Also when there is a keyboard, it moves up and down but it always reacts when pressed on position where it should normaly stand.
Thanks! So... I'm not the only one with this issue.
I think the reason for this screen it's because i dropped the phone before (3-4 days), but not noticed this right in that moment...
Anyway, I easy dropped the phone with intention several times recetly and the screen was OK for a day... don't know what can it be...
I'll try to find out how can be this problem fixed in a service and how much have to pay for all this...
After all, it seems my display don't want to turn on anymore.
I turned on my phone and it's working, it's able to receive calls with no problem, digitizer is working too because I can answer by tapping the known part of display where is that button!
I want to buy a new display and replace it. Could be anything else that make my display not turning on?
Hi, new lg G3 for 1month. D852 in Canada. Just today this started. When I close an app the screen will alternate 1/2 black vertically for less than a second and then the other half black then back to normal. Very strange. I never did anything new to phone. It's not rooted. Stock. Downloaded two apps yesterday that are for bus routes. Deleted today after this started thinking it might be the cause.
My eset antivirus needed deactivation today, which I did and the screen still does this black dance. I powered down and start up but still there.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
Vertical black lines, sections or colouring more often then not is caused by some issue with faulty screen connectors. You should probably do a factory reset if feasible to rule our software issues. If the problem still persists go get it replaced under warranty. Thats the best bet.

Thanks. It's not actually lines. It's vertically 1/2 of the screen, then the other half...then back to regular normal screen.
What I did was launch easy home launcher, then relaunched stock lg launcher. This seemed to fix the problem. It's not doing the 1/2 screen black right now. I will keep u updated. If it continues then it may be something wrong that needs warranty replacement like you mentioned. Thank you.
Vertical black lines on either side of LG G3 after closing any App.

So basicly my lock screen is burned into my screen i woke up this morning and i could my notifications and time in the background burned in so i kind of freaked out however now a few hours later it is only barely visible and i can only see it on a dark grey background with full brightness but as i said its now barely visible if do this.
So the questions i have :
Besides annoying what are the consequenses ?
I bought my phone on aliexpress and it arrived 5 days ago i have 1 year warranty for it should i get the screen rrplaced ?
I read that theres a fix by using a custom rom and changing colour calibration? I was planning on installing resurection remix anyway because it was always my go to rom but does it have kcal ?
Thanks in advance
i had the same issue and made a thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-5-pro/help/3-days-usage-burn-t3793599
there a youtubevideos to solve image retention, but found none in 21:9.
if it is your lockscreen u might turn off ambient display or whatever it is called.
for me i got it when i use the same app for a longer time (eg whatsapp)
but all in all it´s okay for me.
Go to Display > Contrast and Colors and set to cool. But I don't like the blue effect so you can try NIGHTLY and NIGHTLY SCREEN from playstore. And set the app brightness setting to 85%. This will prevent image retention. But if you are rooted it's better to use CF.Lumen and go to manual settings and set RGB to 0.90.

All? I didn't noticed or had any in my 6 months of using this phone.
Faceing the same problem
Bought a LG G8S today but have an issue with the always on display there's a faint Grey background that is only on the half of the screen to put it simple the from the top to half of the screen background is not fully black.

That's definitely weird, I don't have that issue, but in any case I dont even use aod, i just have it set to display alerts. Aod to me was always a battery drainer.
But that looks like it could possibly be a screen burn, can't say for sure though.
Try searching for a completely black picture online (google or something) and look if it behaves the same when you put that picture in fullscreen
if yes it's an issue with your screen (which is highly possible, it doesn't look like something software-side-y to me)
LG G8S here in UK.
MASSIVE screen burn.
Literally half the screen has gone a VERY dark green.
Any way to fix this?
thanks
Matt
Me too
I have the same problem, but isn't hardware problem, if you put a black image doesn't appear that, I'm sure that is a software problem. Already I contact LG support but they just told me go to the store where you buy it for warranty

I have it too but it's only visible at night in very low light. I suspect it's software related since activating the AOD during the day works as it should.
I'm facing the same issue. I think it's most probably a software or hardware issue which is involving the ambient light sensor. For me, it doesn't occur only while using the AOD feature when the phone is placed within a dark enviroment. It also occurs on the superior half of the screen for a period of one second or so if I cover and then uncover the ambient light sensor or when I use the Brief notifications feature. It is only noticeable in low light conditions.
Also, I have contacted LG Support but unfortunately they were not able to provide any solution.

I think it's a software issue. It's very unlikely to be hardware since we have different hardware by different factories. I have the "Brief Notifications" - "Bubble notifications" feature activated and when a notification comes in it also happens but only in low light environments.
I am also on Android 10 - build V20a

I see. If it really is a software issue, then it must be a persistent one. I am currently on Android 9 V10r and had this issue from the very beginning. It isn't that annoying but I hope LG will provide a solution.

I can assure that it is not an a software issue because when I went back to the store to show the problem they replaced my phone right away but I asked the manager to let me compare both phone screens and they confirmed that it is a display defect. Also I gave up on the phone completely since the replacement unit had a defect on the WIFI\SIM module.

I understand. Thank you.
I have noticed this problem too today. AOD is grey, it was fine on A9. Hope LG will fix this (..but i doubdt ).
Generally, an AOD is a bad idea for an OLED screen because of its burn-in effect. Active pixels age while others do not or only slowly. Further, some sub-pixels age faster than others, e.g. the blue ones faster than the green ones. Manufacturers spent a lot of time, money and effort to conceal this effect ... because they failed to really avoid it. In fact, sub-pixels, that are not as worn out as others, are artificially aged to get a uniform degradation of the screen.
The phenomenon you described might be a side effect of this „uniform OLED screen degradation technology” (euphemism?).
As a conclusion one could say that some decent LCD is still a good idea, especially Motorola's method to show time and notifications for some seconds whenever you lift your phone from the table or similar.

Sorry for Off Topic
did someone tried hard reset or flashing the software manually via pc?
lol...it's a hardware issue LG will refuse to own up too.
Ma Kid's phone went so green after only a few months, EVERYTHING was unreadable.
