New LG G8S AOD issue. - LG G8 Questions & Answers

Bought a LG G8S today but have an issue with the always on display there's a faint Grey background that is only on the half of the screen to put it simple the from the top to half of the screen background is not fully black.

That's definitely weird, I don't have that issue, but in any case I dont even use aod, i just have it set to display alerts. Aod to me was always a battery drainer.
But that looks like it could possibly be a screen burn, can't say for sure though.

Try searching for a completely black picture online (google or something) and look if it behaves the same when you put that picture in fullscreen
if yes it's an issue with your screen (which is highly possible, it doesn't look like something software-side-y to me)

LG G8S here in UK.
MASSIVE screen burn.
Literally half the screen has gone a VERY dark green.
Any way to fix this?
thanks
Matt

Me too
I have the same problem, but isn't hardware problem, if you put a black image doesn't appear that, I'm sure that is a software problem. Already I contact LG support but they just told me go to the store where you buy it for warranty

I have it too but it's only visible at night in very low light. I suspect it's software related since activating the AOD during the day works as it should.

I'm facing the same issue. I think it's most probably a software or hardware issue which is involving the ambient light sensor. For me, it doesn't occur only while using the AOD feature when the phone is placed within a dark enviroment. It also occurs on the superior half of the screen for a period of one second or so if I cover and then uncover the ambient light sensor or when I use the Brief notifications feature. It is only noticeable in low light conditions.
Also, I have contacted LG Support but unfortunately they were not able to provide any solution.

I think it's a software issue. It's very unlikely to be hardware since we have different hardware by different factories. I have the "Brief Notifications" - "Bubble notifications" feature activated and when a notification comes in it also happens but only in low light environments.
I am also on Android 10 - build V20a

I see. If it really is a software issue, then it must be a persistent one. I am currently on Android 9 V10r and had this issue from the very beginning. It isn't that annoying but I hope LG will provide a solution.

Strange. I got the answer that some users are not facing the issue. Hope LG can provide an answer.

I can assure that it is not an a software issue because when I went back to the store to show the problem they replaced my phone right away but I asked the manager to let me compare both phone screens and they confirmed that it is a display defect. Also I gave up on the phone completely since the replacement unit had a defect on the WIFI\SIM module.

I understand. Thank you.

I have noticed this problem too today. AOD is grey, it was fine on A9. Hope LG will fix this (..but i doubdt ).

Generally, an AOD is a bad idea for an OLED screen because of its burn-in effect. Active pixels age while others do not or only slowly. Further, some sub-pixels age faster than others, e.g. the blue ones faster than the green ones. Manufacturers spent a lot of time, money and effort to conceal this effect ... because they failed to really avoid it. In fact, sub-pixels, that are not as worn out as others, are artificially aged to get a uniform degradation of the screen.
The phenomenon you described might be a side effect of this „uniform OLED screen degradation technology” (euphemism?).
As a conclusion one could say that some decent LCD is still a good idea, especially Motorola's method to show time and notifications for some seconds whenever you lift your phone from the table or similar.

It ist not a good idea to post a screenshot with your IMEI. I would blacken the IMEI
Sorry for Off Topic

did someone tried hard reset or flashing the software manually via pc?

lol...it's a hardware issue LG will refuse to own up too.
Ma Kid's phone went so green after only a few months, EVERYTHING was unreadable.

[UPDATED] Auto brightness flicker - Related to CPU load? Try different governer?

Hi all.
I'm reading a lot about 'screen flicker'. But it seems people are using this to describe a few different faults.
I've noticed that my one x backlight flickers when in auto brightness mode. But it only does it under artificial light. Under natural light it's totally fine.
If I turn off Auto brightness, it is completely fine also, regardless of what level I set the brightness to.
It's almost as if the software isn't filtering the auto brightness sensor output enough and trying to respond instantaneously to even the slightest light change, giving the impression of a flicker.
Who else has this issue specifically?
It looks to me like a software issue, but I only have 3 days left in my return for refund peiod and I'm not sure what the best option is.
Cheers.
EDIT: On to my 10th handset now with the same issue and just about ready to give up, but have noticed that the flicker seems to be worse when the CPU is coming on and off heavy load.
Can someone with Root and SETCPU installed please try different governers to see if they make any difference to this issue? I don't wan to root this phone to try it myself as I may end up returning it. Thanks!

Oh well return it, and buy a new one thats probably the best option, i ordered mine yesterday, and ill do the same in 2 weeks if it have issues
Yeah I'm thinking that might be the best option. It's just that it seems to be a Software issue to me.
Anyone upgraded to 1.28 and seen this specific problem (not the screen jumping and flickering pixels) go away?

I've upgraded to 1.28 and still have the flickering problem. I would love to be able to believe its software and its going to get fixed with an OTA, but at the moment everyone is simply uncertain as to what the future holds.
HTC advices anyone with a flickering screen to go to your carrier and ask for a replacement
Sent from my Desire HD using xda premium
On to my 10th handset with auto-brightness flicker now. At what point should i jsut give up? lol
It seems to be somehow related to CPU load also as I'm noticing the flicker is far worse when the cpu is changing power states.
Can someone with root try a different governer for the CPU and see if that changes the flicker at all?
BUMP. I'd be really great if someone rooted could test this theory!
..
I really cant help but ill tell my experience with my onex for the past two or three weeks.
I had the flickering screen twice,
1. random on the notification bar.
2. I was taking photos and got the CPU loaded because I was shooting too many pics. the bottom side of the screen was flickering.
anyway, I notice that the flickering only happend when the auto screen rotate is enabled.
Thanks for the reply, but I think you're talking about a different flicker. I'm talking about the back-light flicker when Auto Brightness is enabled. Not the LCD panel flicker.

Auto brightness issue? strange software glirch?

Does anyone else get this issue? I love having my brightness cranked to the fullest to see all the beautiful colors and sharpness of the screen. I noticed the other night while in my living room, the screen was dimmer than normal it made the whites have a yellow tint to it. Well case in point i checked my brightness settings and they were cranked up along with Auto Brightness turned off.
I did check in the display options that there is a color mode setup i always have mine on Cinema because it makes it the fullest of color and never changes.
I find this to be strange and im almost wondering that regardless of what i set my brightness too something in the software is manipulating the adaptive brightness. Hmm.. This is going to drive me bonkers. I wonder if its a Lollipop thing. Thanks!
I noticed when I was taking pictures on a sunny day and maybe a few times at the house. I have full brightness on until around dinner time. Hopefully fixed with a update.
I'm not sure where I read it, but this is a known occurrence on this phone, so there is nothing wrong with your phone..
I'll look for the story were I first saw this..

yes doesn't work at all. I restored the phone and at that stage there is no car app installed yet, so it is not this causing the bug.
I suggest everyone that has the s6 edge to check it and eventually to return it back if you're still on time. Honestly I'm really disappointed, all this hype and then the flagship phone has this enormous bug! I chatted with my local assistance of Samsung and they were not aware of the issue. So I asked to the guy in chat if he could try to do the test that is on youtube (cover the light sensor and then use a flashlight comparing S6 and S6 edge) and he confirmed that even with brightness set to manual, the s6 edge is still reacting to the changes of light conditions. He didn't know if this is supposed to be a "feature" of the s6 edge but honestly I strongly doubt. It is a common bug of all the s6 edge, probably will be corrected, probably not, who knows. I returned mine in the meantime, if solved (confirmed by Samsung) I will consider to buy it again in the coming months.
Same problem
With auto brightness turned off it seems that the sensor still triggers the screen to dim or increase brightness.
I noticed it after i had the screen on and went from outdoor to indoor, it just automatically dimmed the screen. This is an issue with the software so hopefully with the new 5.1.1 update it will fix it.
heres a link to where i found out the issue but unfortunately since i am a new member i cannot post it yet.
but search THE DROID GUY SAMSUNG GALAXY S6 EDGE COMMON PROBLEMS
hope this helps

screen far too sensitive?

New member here, first post.
I had my g4 several weeks ago (uk version). Great phone, however recently the screen seems far too sensitive. Sometimes apps or other features are activating on their own without me pressing on them.
I looked in the settings but havent found a way to resolve this. Can anyone offer any suggestions?
Just to clarify a bit more about my issue.
Its like the "floating touch" some phones have, where i can be an inch or two away from the screen but it still activates. More rarely, it seems as if it was activating by sensing light or movement. Strange. Is the g4 supposed to have this type of function?

That sounds like a problem. The G4 is actually known for lacking sensitivity and yours is doing the opposite. enable this settings to see if it is actually detecting ghost touches.
Settings, About Phone, Software Info and tap on 'Buidld number' 7 times. Then go back to settings and tap Developer options, enable 'Show Touches'
if the dots show without your intervention, then it's likely due to faulty touchscreen.
Anyways, do a factory reset and see if it helped.

Does reset solve the issue? , happening on mine right now. Appreciate your feedback. Thanks
Same here, on Imperium and Stock rom, I have the phone since 6 months and it is a really random issue... my bootloader is unlock so I don't know if I can send it to warranty.
For information I have enable the touch "tracing" in developper menu, and when the issue occurred it's getting me perfect vertical line from bottom to top screen, and open a lot of apps..

And from the sound of it... Yours pretty much ****ed, at least to my knowledge. Hardware screwed and no warranty. Just bought mine like 3 weeks ago, and hated it so much. So much hyped, but the experienced is so far ****ty at best.
I suspect mine hardware issue. This seems like it's gonna be the first, and the last LG for me. Even mine with warranty still intact. Blackberry used to give this feeling long ago with their ****ty storm. Now, LG and blackberry can share that same ****ed up grave.
As madgibbon indicates, I was on Accessibility / Motricity / Response time (my phone is in french so i'm not sure if it will be exactly like that on yours) and I have set to "Long".
Since that, the issue is no longer appear, I have also switch to rom V20F (Turkey) with still the same setting for accessibility, and I don't have the issue anymore.
I don't know if it is a hardware issue, my phone falls maybe 4 times but with a case and from a little height, no broken glass or something else.
This is all the things I tried before that ;
Using flipcover (QI charge and quick circle), I have tested the "normal" case but same issue
I had a glass protection, I have removed it and cleaned my screen, same issue
I have done lot of hard reset (i'm kind of full wipe addict), same issue
Only the solution of madgibbon works fortunately, thanks mate
I'm also a bit disappointed by this phone, it is great sure I mean fluid, great camera etc... but I have some little issue that ruin the experience unfortunately (this issue with touchscreen, i'm experiencing issue with my Chromecast too that i don't have with other phones, some heating, I don't find the battery usage so good since MM, can't relock bootloader since now). I don't blame LG because i'm using some of their products and I'm / was really satisfied with : Optimus 2x, Nexus 5, TV, Monitor, Sound Bar. Anyway, waiting for 2016's Nexus and I will see if I switch or not.

Screen problem after all, just picked my phone up from the place that I bought for under warranty fix, and they told me they did replace for a new screen, and all is looking fine and dandy for now. Hope it stay this way, finger crossed. 3 weeks purchased and already this problem. I doubt this thing will last.

LG G4 - Image Retention - LCD Replaced by Warranty

I recently experienced really bad image retention issue with my LG G4 (and my wife's V10 but that is for another forum). It was so bad that even if I use any of those burn in fixer apps it just keeps coming back. It would go away when you turn it off but come right back within 5 minutes of using the phone.
In any case, I had it replaced for free since it is still under warranty. I'm worried now that it may eventually come back again because it seems to be common to the G4 (and the Quantum IPS screen phones)
My question is:
1. Has anyone else experienced image retention? Is it a common G4 issue? How can I avoid it?
2. For those that has experienced it and had their LCD replaced, did the issue ever come back?
Thanks!

Hi, i have the same problem but i found a very easy solution. All you have to do is install sfilter(or any other blue light filter, and no retention anymore, even if u keep it as low as 20 or 30%. I did the same, i keep my filter at 20% and no ghosting what so ever no matter how bright the screen is. And the second i turn it off, all hell breaks loose. I have an lg g4, but i am sure it will work on any ips display. Hope it helps ?

Hello, I am new here. I have same problem with the display on my LG G4 H818.
1. First instal from Gplay: " Galaxy Nexus Screen Diagnostic " . Now Test your screen with "repair custom" option. If leave 5 minutes on this screen test, images retention will disappear. This is first good sign.
2. Instal from Gplay: " Blue Light Filter ", for recognizing, icon is a 1/4 yellow moon ?in blue circle. Developer is Leap Fitness. This is my try. You can test another blue light filter and test.
3. Go to activate blue light filter from button, and set:
-Color temp to 3200k;
-intensity to 10, is enough and it works fine for me;
-screen Dim to 9%.
4. Optional, for better color contrast: Go in phone settings/ general tab/ accessibility/ vision / screen color adjustment / actiaye from button and move the cursor down a half centimeter. For me is enough this setup.
Hope this is helpful for all. Thanks

Ambient Display Screen Flashes

Hi Guys!~
Hope all is well !!
... recently I came across my rooted android 11 Pixel 3XL got a screen flashes with bright home screen background during the screen turning off and entering ambient display mode.
I try my best to find a solution but haven't found one yet.
I have tried to reflash to stock, also doesn't fix the problems.
... the only solution I found at this moment is to get android 12 beta which the transition animation from turning off the screen to the wake up of ambient display is totally different and I still prefer to stay with rooted android 11.

If you tried multiple roms especially the stock* one unless it's something you loaded after the flash, it's got to be hardware related. It's possible the non stock rom blew out some hardware too.
Try setting brightness to manual.
A rework around may be the only viable solution.
You ever wonder what happens when one or two of the billions of semiconductor junctions/resistors/caps fails in the chipset or display? You might be looking at an example
It could be a loose connection, or a faulty ribbon cable/connector, a subassembly maybe even battery (if so there be more symptoms).
*unless a known issue in this device.
