N5X vs OP2 - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am thinking about replacing my defective n5x for a one plus 2? should i get another n5x or move on? which phone is better? (personally i like the n5x but the OP2 has much better specs and the n5x gets the latest software updates relatively earlier as compared to other recent devices) be sure to share your opinion.
thanks.

Your defective 5x isn't under warranty?
If the options are another 5x or the OP2 I'd definitely go with the 5x. Although the OP2 has better specs, the 5x is the better all-around phone due to updates, FPS placement, NFC and much faster charging (5x: 1.3 hrs, OP2: 3+ hrs).

Oneplus 2 has better hardware specs, but it is not clear whether it's using the hardware efficiently. For example, the Anandtech.com review of Oneplus 2 found that OP2 shuts down its "fast" A57 cores when Chrome is launched. So despite using the SD810 SoC with four A57 cores, some apps will be running no faster than on an entry level smartphone, like Moto G3 (2015). Both of these phone are unlocked and are sold under 300USD. Either way, it's great that these budget smartphones exist.

Overall speed

Would you say that the ZTE Axon 7 is "fast" in day-to-day use? A higher rating indicates that you think the ZTE Axon 7 exhibits fantastic performance. Like, is it as fast as your tears when you watch The Titanic?
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
One of the snappiest phones I've used. On par, or better than the Nexus 6p.
The 820 chipset seems like a decent boost coming from the 801

I do experience lag. It's not as snappy as I would expect. https://community.zteusa.com/thread/12239
I recently returned my Note 7 with all bloat disabled I could manage to get lag and skipped frames every few seconds... the Axon 7 is much faster, with almost zero lag during everyday use.
I've had it a little over 36 hours.. This thing is blazing fast AND more importantly, SMOOTH. Transitions don't feel like knee jerk reactions.. When you press the home button or recent button to me it feels like the phone said "I was already beginning to do that."
I was previously using a note 4 (Samsung, it's funny how I have to clarify this as there are several other note devices from other oems now!) And this axon 7 runs laps around my note 4 regardless if my phone was on touchwiz rom, stock, rooted, overclocked, custom Rom, aosp Rom... Still axon 7 smoking my note 4..
Best thing about the phone for me is that I can put it through some heavy usage without it becoming a mini furnace in my hand. Coming from a Oneplus One and Nexus 6p which both had issues where once the phone got hot it seemed to slow down a lot, the Axon 7 hasn't had this issue. Not sure if it'll suffer the same if it does get hot but so far I haven't had any slowdowns due to excessive heat.
I notice on my phone that it thermal throttles a lot. Unless it's cool at around 30 degrees or cooler, it won't hit 2.15 ghz and will generally top around 1.5 on the high speed cores. My antutu scores range from 70k to 140k.
Coming from a LG G4 H812, this phone is pure unadulterated butter! Android doesn't get any smoother than this. Absolutely no complains about overall performance.

How does it compare to the n7.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using XDA-Developers mobile app
Compared to my previous phone with a Snapdragon 801...the Axon is a rocket.
device speed is fantastic, performance is been off the charts .
I used to have an Honor 8. Compared to Honor 8 it is a little bit slower
However I haven`t seen any phone as fast as Honor 8
Been enjoying mine. It's fast at anything device based. Once you go online the network can make it lag but no phone can help that. I'd like to have a play with an SD835 or Kirin 970 device but suspect I wouldn't feel so much benefit compared to coming from my Mate 7 and Find 7 up to the Axon 7.
Interested to see what ZTE bring to the market with the replacement of the 7.

Migrating from ZTE Axon 7 - Couple of questions

Hello there!
I am currently active on the ZTE Axon 7 side of things. I initially bought the Axon because of its speakers, its loud DAC/Amp for headphones and its sleek metal build. I succumbed to "beauty" over functionality and want to make a leap back.
My choices are the OnePlus 3 (not T! it's too expensive) and the Moto Z Play.
My main usage is around 50% Whatsapp, 30% Reddit (via Sync), 10% Youtube, 10% Spotify. I have no games installed and I use the camera occasionally for shooting a picture in Whatsapp...
Will the SD625 be enough for me empirically?
How is the sound output via 1)Speakers, 2) Headphones in comparison to phones like the Nexus 5, LG G4, Nexus 5X (those are phones I know and heard)?
How "easy" is it to unlock the Bootloader for european users?
How fast and accurate is the fingerprint sensor?
For Germans: Does the turbocharger come included in the box?
People who got the Z Play and the OP3: What is your opinion?
I tried to be as specific as possible and hope that I will be able to contribute more once I make my decision.

Hi there,
The snapdragon 625 has enough power for your use cases, actually more than enough. I haven't found an app or game it couldn't handle until now.
Speakers: Compared to my Nexus 4, far better. Very clear and loud, but I can't speak for other models you mentioned.
Bootloader: Unlocking the bootloader is fairly easy. Register on the motorola site, boot phone into fastboot and obtain the device key. Submit it and Moto sends your unlock key via e-mail. But keep in mind you will loose your warranty.
Fingerprint sensor: Unlocks really fast (less than a second). I can't compare the accuracy as it is my first device with a sensor, but until today it always unlocked
Turbocharger: I bought the retail version from amazon.de and it was included.
The OP3 probably has a larger developer base, so if you are into custom roms the OP3 might be a better choice. On the other hand, you won't find a phone with a better battery life than the Z Play. My phone visits the charger every three days ...
Have a look at this thread for more pros and cons.
Unlocks faster than it takes to swipe up on the screen it seems.
Because of battery life, I upgraded 2 times. First from Moto G 2014 to Moto X Play, then Moto Z Play.
If you ask regarding phone quality or listening to something different than music, fine. The Z Play is a wonderful device, it's fast, it stays cool when gaming, it has every sensor you could need, components are very good, everything's working together great saving battery. You can't plug the charger the wrong way because it's USB-C! I like it very much and would always recommend it.
The sound of the Moto Z Play is good. But if you search for something to play music via loud speaker, never take a device without stereo. For music the sound of Moto G 2014 which has stereo speakers is so much better.
A colleague has the Sony X Compact X and is very confident, this maybe an option. I don't like Sony, they like to restrict users, they implement a different GUI for Android, they delete some functionality RIP (raster image processing) when rooting. But if you ask about sound and refer to music, you may have a look at it.
The other devices I don't know, and I didn't hear the loudspeaker of the Sony. I don't have the comparison you want, but just wanted to tell you my experience. Hope it helps.
You may have a look at the speaker mod. Or take some external speaker, the Moto Z Play supports aptX which makes Bluetooth sound great (of course the other device has to support it too to make it work).
Thank you for the answers! I'm not that much into custom Roms, but the original software on the Axon 7 is so bad, that is was absolutely necessary.
How is the software on the Z Play? I hear that Moto usually updates pretty fast and keeps it stock.
Before the MZP I had an OP3 as a daily driver - it died after two months, the touchscreen just stopped working out of nowhere. The only thing I preferred the OP3 over the MZP is the design and, maybe, the camera.
Sound: OP3's output (3.5mm) seemed to be a little bit louder, but not better in any way. The MZP wins the speaker battle (front-facing ftw!).
Performance: Despite having half the RAM and a much less powerful SoC I feel that the MZP performs way smoother, especially multi tasking works much better (sic!).
Battery: OP3 struggled to get me over 1.5 days, MZP reachs up to 4 days and 3 on a regular basis.
Turbocharger: I'm from Switzerland, so not sure about DE, but I got the turbocharger included. Pretty sure it's the same for Germany.
Software: Had some bugs @OP3, but that may have changed in the meantime. Overall it's communty is much bigger - but I don't really care about custom ROMs when the phone comes with (nearly) stock Android as the MZP does.
Updates: In terms of pace I would give this point to the OP3 - but they had to deliver fastly to troubleshoot all the bugs, so...
Features: The MZP comes with a bunch a really cool and useful software features. Just check out the Moto Actions.
So, overall I'd definitely go with the MZP again anytime.
I went from Axon 7 to OnePlus 3 to Moto Z Play. The Axon 7 had frustrating Software, no development, very annoying capacitive buttons, and an annoying curved back (didn't sit flat on tables). The OnePlus 3 had great software and tons of development, but speakers sucked and battery life was worse (although still enough to make it through most days without charging mid day). The Z play has awesome stock software and plenty of development, good front facing speaker, insane battery life, flat back, mods (love my speaker mod and leather back), and performance is just as good as the oneplus 3 and Axon 7. Next to each other, the OnePlus 3 was noticeably faster than the Axon, but the oneplus 3 and Moto z play are identical.
I would never go back to an 800-series CPU again. Having unlimited battery life, a phone that never ever heats up no matter what, and is just as smooth as the fastest phones on the market is wonderful. The SD625 is marketed as a "mid-range CPU", but considering it's the only cpu other than the SD 820/1 on the 14nm process, it's really a flagship CPU that prioritizes efficiency over performance. Can't wait for the 10nm SD635!
Unlocking bootloader is easy for everyone (except Verizon models), fingerprint reader is faster than the Axon but a little slower than the OnePlus 3. Camera is worse than both (you didn't ask about that, but if that's very important to you, the OP3 camera is really really good). The Moto gestures and ambient display are really useful and work very well. Front speaker on the Z Play is tinny at high volume but way better than the OP3 speaker. Build quality is excellent on all 3 phones. I can't tell any difference using headphones between the OP3 and the Z Play, but neither are as good as the Axon 7 was. The stock software on the Z Play is better than the pixel or nexus. OnePlus 3 Software is better if you care about customization out of the box. If you don't care, the Z Play software is better.
Thanks so much to the last 2 replies, this made my choice a lot easier.
The camera on the mzp is about as good as the 5x but nowhere near the G4. Sound is a bit better than the 5x and G4 but nothing stunning. Hardware is way better than lg which is failure prone. Exchange services on the Moto are good and better than Google AOSP which are worthless but lg services are better than Moto's. I'm impressed with the one plus 3t. Awesome hardware if you want a VR capable phone. The mzp is the perfect workhorse. Amazing battery and never feels slow.
I currently have the oneplus3, Axon 7, and Nexus 6p.. I am thinking about downsizing to only have the z play because the sd 625 is amazing with power efficiency and is a strong enough processor for anything a phone needs to do. Gaming, Taking some pictures, 2 day battery life, plus it's water resistant (proof...?) Saw a video of a dude leaving it under water for an hour with no damage!

I went from the Axon 7 to Z Play and I'm not looking back. The best decision I ever did. Software was weird on the Axon, capacitive buttons were easy to miss and some other small things. The only thing better was the display's scratch resistance and the camera glass too.

Listening to music using headphones. OnePlus 3 is a strict no no. The sound signature of Moto z play via headphone is excellent - I was pleasantly surprised. It is deep and loud even though it doesnot have any dedicated DAC.
Battery life in z play is insane. SOT - 7 to 8 hours easy even with nougat update.
The UI is super smooth and clean.
Moto z play is perhaps the most underrated phone.
I agree completely. I also came from the axon 7. The Moto z play is gonna be a hard phone to quit!!! And I was one to switch phones every 3 months.
Oh, I forgot to tell: I made the switch and am not looking back
Love the gestures, SOT is around 5-6 hours, on my Axon I had like 2.5 days.
I feel like people with thosei nsane SOT times (10+ hours) are using it permanently and letting the screen on at just idle.
My phone only has 5hours SOT but lasts around 5-6 days because it is always in standby

So what did you get? I just got me the Moto Z Play after so much research. I gave my dad a MOTO G5 Plus for his birthday just to see how the SD625 performed and that thing convinced me it was lag free and snappy (low light camera sucks big time though on the G5). I had bad experiences with SD615/617 with previous devices I owned like the Idol 3S. It was just a lag fest and slow downs on those devices. Don't know if the 2ghz or the 14nm or the 933mhz DDR3 or a combination of all 3 that made a drastic change in performance on the SD625 over the SD615 but so far it is a completely different beast. Was about to get the OP5 but found an open box Z play for a really good price and could not pass it up. I'm coming from a Moto X Pure. I was sick and tire of the pure's battery life, and the micro lags here and there when it started to heat up. I loved the dual speakers but oh well, the single speaker on the play is loud enough and is front facing. The AMOLED is just beautiful, no WIFI AC like the pure but I don't even transfer large files over wifi to my desktop. So don't care. I haven't tested the cameras yet, and won't upgrade to nougat - I like Xposed. Will come back and drop a line or two after I use this device for a couple of weeks.
It would be downgrade

I had Axon 7 and I had OnePlus 3, and now I'm using Moto Z Play,
Only thing better in Z Play is batter and everything ends there.
Axon 7 have beautiful display, Sound from headphones and speakers are not match, performance was also superior, only thing I felt inferior was Camera but Z Play is no good IMO, I'm also Using HTC U11 so It is snappy for most part (Z Play) but I often see slow downs, and for my Z Play call speaker was a downgrade as well. what I like about Z Play is batter and Moto Display.
IMO OnePlus 3 will be better purchase than Moto Z Play.

Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 6GB variant compares with Mi Max 3 6GB variant

Hi guys,
How Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 6GB variant compares with Mi Max 3?
I feel Mi Max 3 will be on positive side for
1. bigger battery (5500 mAh vs 5000 mAh)
2. quick charge 3
3. IR blaster
Whereas Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 6GB variant will be on positive side for
1. Near stock android (vs MIUI)
I use Nexus 6. I do a lot reading on it. Many times I read in split screen mode in two apps (say two instances of Microsoft Word, one through ES Parallel Space). Nexus 6 has broader screen (16:9 ratio). It was launched in 2014, but still have higher resolution and pixel density than both Max 3 and Zenfone!!! This makes it best to read in split screen mode in two apps. So I feel bigger screen of Mi Max 3 will be suitable for this purpose.
Also its stock android is great. Split screen functionality of Stock Naugat is better than that of MIUI.
I also feel MIUI provides better control over backgound apps and hence battery. I live with my four year old Nexus 6 in always on battery saver mode. This helps to extend battery life to at least 1 day. If I dont use battery saver mode, it will barely last for 15 hours. Also my Nexus 6 lags quite a lot now. Opening some 40 page word docs takes at least 5 sec. Will all this be gone with both Max 3 or Zenfone?
Also Nexus 6 had great camera with OIS. Mi Max 3 have AI camera while Asus Zenfone have 16MP phone. Dont know which one will have better camera at least better than Nexus 6?
So was guessing what will be best choice for me.
Hi there. I think you are comparing apples with oranges. MM3 is 6.9, Max Pro M1 is 5.99. It is a perfect hardware match for redmi note 5 - so there you should compare. Regards!

yeah I know there is 0.9" difference.
But I am not trying to compare them with each other, but with my usage scenario. Thats why I explained how I usually use it.
Usage scenario 1: Two Microsoft Word documents in split screen mode each 40+ page.
Usage scenario 2: Satisfying camera (at least better than Nexus 6)
I believe broader screen like Nexus 6 serves better when it comes to my usage scenario 1. Zenfone seems a bit narrower. In fact, in todays market, most 6" phone is narrower than 6" Nexus 6 due to their 18:9 ratio (Nexus 6 is 16:9). Also two instances of Word should work smoothly in split screen. My 4 year old Nexus 6 lags considerably at this. I dont know what is culprit: old processor (but its 2.6GHz quad core)? slower / smaller RAM? or battery?
On paper, M1 is good but users report M1 has some problem included multitouch problem, not so good on battery/matterial quality
Ho boy.. I have Nexus 6 too. Was my daily driver until I ditched it for good with my Max 2. The worst thing about Nexus 6 was the camera, it's barely useable. Also fingerprint, the battery and SoC efficiency, I would trade AMOLED 1440p and front firing speakers for those any time of the day. Once you are in 10+ hours SOT territory you don't ever want to go back.
Also MIUI is not that bad at all, it's not as intrusive and forceful as Huawei EMUI. It looks clean and still have material design language.

On the fence

Sure it has a slower processor, but my question is will it really be intolerable ?
Is there any Android app anywhere that will not run on the device because of the slow processor ?
I like owning a Pixel device, I had a Pixel XL and to get the major updates first and have pure Android experience is sweet.
Sure Oneplus 7, but really ..... I expect it to cost over $1000.00 Canadian

I just picked up the 3a XL to run the Q beta and even on beta software (so far) the performance is not bad at all. Sure it has a slower less powerful processor but in reality how often do you really use the Pixel 3's processor to it's full potential? I think for an everyday phone running internet, messaging, phone, and some light game apps it will be just fine.
I mean, the processor is basically on par with the pixel 2, so it will be an upgrade from the og pixel.. I've got the 2 xl now and haven't had any issues with speed
I saw a video last night of someone comparing the 3 to 3a and there was definitely a speed difference in launching apps. However, in day to day usage, I don't think it's very noticeable at all. I just set my 3a XL up on the Q beta and it's running just fine. I don't do much gaming on my phone so I can't speak to that piece.
I don't know from where you guys get your speed reference, but coming from android one; mi a1, nokia 6.1, mi a2 this phone is wiping the floor with them. After the nexi got canceled I didn't go for the pixel line because of principle and ethics. Although I hope google will handle the budget category better than those mentioned above, since they all were ok out of the box and set up, the frustrating slowdowns and more bugs introduced than fixed came each month one after another.
From this youtube video, the guy himself is a power user, he didn't notice any performance issues. He highly recommends the Pixel 3A XL
link - search "Hands-On: Google Pixel 3a XL has been my daily driver for 6 weeks" on YT
2 days with my 3a xl and I ain't seen one hint of lag. I am on 11 percent battery and am just minutes away from hitting 10 hours SOT. I have nothing but good things to say about this phone. Massively recommended
I haven't had an issue running all my app, streaming video apps, and games on my 3a xl. There is an occasional delay on games that ran butter smooth on a 845 processor but it's nothing that would make me want to get rid of the phone. The screen isn't as good as a flagship of course but it's nowhere near what a phone of this price would be. I'm still in shock how well the phone runs for the price and I've owned nothing but flagships in the past.
I haven't regretted getting mine. I use it as my daily and I dont really notice the speed difference. It is like micro seconds slower,,,nothing that you wouldn't notice unless your really looking for it. Having all the other features and that camera makes up for it at this price point. Plus, I put a wireless charging receiver on it for 9 bucks and I have wireless charging back. Its not ultra fast charging but it charges the whole phone in about hour and a half.

This. This right here is why I just bought one yesterday. I wanted a pixel 3 xl, but could not fathom having to charge every few hours or having it die on me when travelling. The Oneplus 7 was my first choice but I'm sure even the regular one will be priced higher than the Pixel. I got a $100 gift card plus $50 cashback, so all things accounted, I paid around $380 for the 3a XL, and that is a bargain, no mater how you look at it. I have a Note 9 that will now be my backup phone. Noting wrong with it. I just want proper and fast updates, a good camera, and dependable battery and it seems Samsung will never catch up on the software side. So far the 3a XL is performing more than adecuately for my needs. I never play games or do cpu intensive tasks on my phone so this will be just fine.

I believe the SD670 SoC in the Pixel 3a is closer to the SD821, which was featured in the 1st gen Pixel. Nobody should be put off by that fact at all. The Phone is fast and buttery smooth with some of the best battery life I have ever seen. The 3a XL's battery life could almost trade blows with some of the 5000mah monster phones out there. Like the Huawei Mate 20X for example.

interesting, i'm in the market for a phone. The 2xl 128gb is only £370 GBP compared to the 3a XL which is £469.
What do you prefer about the 2xl?

Not who you were asking but I came from a 2 XL. The 2 XL does perform better. It's snappier and sometimes the 3a XL stutters. Other than that, I would say the speakers on the 2 XL are better (the 3a isn't bad though) and the metal/glass combo of the 2 XL feels better in the hand. The screen on the 2 XL is also brighter at Max but overall the display is much better in the 3a.

I prefer the width of the 2xl , slightly shorter too.
I also have started using day dream which the 3a xl doesn't support.
I did a test earlier of blasting portraits one after the other and the 2xl takes 5 in quick succession and the 3a xl takes 4 shots.
Again the 2xl processes much faster and I'm take other shots within a few seconds.
A must for family photography.
The 3a xl has amazing battery life,
Gestures on pie using fluid are sluggish on the 3a xl but this might change with Android q.
Cameras are identical in my testing,
Yeah, you notice the weaker processing in the camera app, especially night shots. I wouldn't call it an impediment to getting pictures of fast moving grand kids but that's my own opinion, I think some would consider it an issue in the same way you do. I personally find it interesting that some are saying the performance is largely the same as compared to acurrent flagship, I don't see that. I'm usually not the type that joins in on microstutters and all that sort stuff because current flagships seem to me to be fluid in use all, or nearly all, the time. I don't see that here, I most def see apps hitching up while loading, I see a camera which is slower, even the main menu will stutter when it opens and does so out of the box.
In context though the current introductory pricing is not likely to go away. As we get closer to the Pix 4 the flagship 3's will drop in price which if anything will push these down further. Today I read those have a 200 dollar reduction in price (for the time being) which still makes them twice as expensive. At 370 and 300 I think these things are compelling buys.. You get flagship camera quality, those nice little Pixel software touches, decent screens, the performance isn't what I would describe as bad even if I don't feel it offers a flagship grade of smooth. Life could be a lot worse for those that can't or don't want to muster up flagship ching.
Honestly I would consider a 2xl ,better built than the 3 imo
The notch is hideous,
I believe a the reviewers are being positive as Google actually gave them the pixel and not loaned them like usual.
I'm not knocking the 3a at all just I believe the 2xl if you can refurbed or even new at some places would be the better buy.
I've seen them online for around £180 if you look around

Question Google Pixel 6 (Pro) an "flagship" phone...

So, I have some Nexus and Pixels phones in the past, and went to OnePlus, 3, 5, 6 and 7 (Pro).
I still have the 7 Pro with 12GB RAM and 256 GB memory, I bought this due the pop up camera (privacy) and stock ROM experience.
Fine, now I'm consedering buying the 6 or 6 Pro, but what I find weird is, why is this nice Tensor chipped phone named a "Flagship"?
Like, some competitors have 65W, 100W, 125W battery charge possibilities and this phone is still stuck on 30W, what even isn't maybe 100 true.
Still try to find a reason, because all the rest is nice...

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra has 25 W "fast" charging. Yeah, the charging may not be the fastest (it takes about hour and half to two hours) to fully charge the phone. Or you can get used to charging overnight with Adaptive Charging feature.
It's called Flagship, because it has flagship cameras, performace can be called flaghsip-y still, it has flagship 4K 120 Hz OLED (Pro version), flagship sounding stereo speakers, flagship haptcis and so on. The software support is the best, but be careful and test everything out - you may get a lemon in terms of display or connectivity (December update should fix it). Mine P6P is flawless.
