Hangouts crashing after switch to CM13 - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

So I finally bit the bullet and put CM13 on my n7. I couldn't stand the video issues I was having. This is my first time flashing cyanogenmod. My first time doing anything more complicated than root, actually. Everything seemed to go smoothly. Gapps are installed. Everything is working except for hangouts.
Hangouts is crashing immediately upon typing anything into it. I mean, just a single letter, and "unfortunately hangouts has stopped." It's only text that does it. Voice calls are working. I use hangouts with google voice. Also, none of my contacts' names or photos are showing, only their number.
I've cleared app data and cache, and cleared cache partition in recovery. I've also tried disabling updates in the play store and trying an older version of hangouts. I went all the way back to v 5.something. I tried 5 different apks and got the same result with all of them. Hangouts was never a problem in stock Android. What did I do wrong?

I may be way off base on this one, but your symptoms remind me of a similar problem I had a while back with Gapps. Typing certain characters into the app store would crash it too. Since Hangouts is part of the Google "family," maybe it's tied in somehow?
I recall solving the problem by upgrading gapps (specifically the play store) to a more recent version AND fixing permissions on the apps which were crashing. I believe I used an app available from the play store to do the latter.

This was just flashed yesterday. I followed the instructions on the cyanogenmod site exactly. I used the most recent version of open gapps listed on the site. It was a nano gapps package, which I assumed meant bear minimum to get the play store running. Build number on the play store is listed as 7.0.16.H-all [0]. Tapping the build number gives me a message that the play store is up to date.
Do you recall what app you used to fix permissions? I'm afraid I don't know much about managing permission.

In the Play Store, it's listed as "Fix Permissions" by Stephen (Stericson).

OK. I found the app. Gave it a try and it didn't solve my problem. Hangouts is still crashing the second I try to type in a text. I even rebooted after fixing permission on hangouts.

I'm starting to think my mistake may have been going with the nano open gapps package. Perhaps I should try a fuller version that has hangouts included. Does anyone know if I can simply re-flash gapps, or do I have to start over from scratch and reflash cm13 as well?

I'm going to try it. Gonna reflash cm13 followed by open gapps-stock which has all google apps normally installed on nexus devices, including hangouts. Crossing my fingers. I'll post back with progress.

Well this problem has taken me for quite a ride. Trying to flash any gapps package larger than the nano version resulted in errors; insufficient storage in the system partition. I finally decided to give up on CM13 and try Pure Nexus instead. WAY better. Hangouts is installed and working properly, and video playback works just fine. Only had one little glitch after flashing, there was no camera app. It didn't show up in play store either, so I downloaded an apk online. That one was buggy, but after I installed it, it showed up in the play store, and I was able to uninstall and reinstall from there. Works fine now.

I'm not sure where the bug lies, but it goes something like this: on the combination of CM13 and gapps (both opengapps and banks....so i'm inclined to believe it's a CM13 issue) hangouts looks for a simcard when sending google voice messages. on a phone without a sim you will get a never ending popup about which sim you want to use to send the message. you can pop in any sim and it will resume normal functionality. the sim doesn't even have to be activated. on the nexus wifi model, since it doesn't have a sim, you get an instant crash. it's been driving me nuts for a while.
*edit* must be CM13. just checked on an AOSP rom on another device. works fine without a sim.

Having same issue with Samsung Tab SM T310. CM12 Hangouts works great. On 13 and 14 no matter wha Gapps package you install Hangouts never works.

Is anybody able to send a text with Hangouts and a Google Voice number on a Nougat Flo?
I've tried a bunch of Nougat ROM's and can't get Hangouts to let me send a text.
I had a little bit of luck using Hangouts 15, but even it finally crashed.
I finally rolled back to a 6.0.1 ROM (those are getting few and far between...) and it seems to be working OK with Hangouts 17.
I'm guessing this is because there's no SIM in a Flo?
I sure would like it to work again on Nougat as I'd gotten pretty used to it pretty quickly.
Thanks,
-Kyle

I gave up on CM. Apparently the issue persists in the Lineage OS versions as well. I ended up going with purenexus marshmallow instead, and it worked like a charm. Unfortunately it looks like there won't be an official purenexus nougat for flo. I was really hoping that Lineage would fix the hangouts problem.
I've been wondering... If the issue is kernel related, could flashing elementalX or similar solve the problem? I haven't gotten around to trying.
Edit: elementalX works quite well with purenexus 6

Same problem here with LineageOS 14.1 (2018-04-04) + Hangouts + Nexus 7 (2013) Wi-Fi.
Hangouts crashes on typing anything into an SMS thread. I did notice it's fine on non-SMS threads ....as well as receiving voice calls.
I'd love to use Lineage on my Nexus 7, but I have to stay on the official ROM for now. I am happily using Lineage 14.1 on Nexus 5 & 4 though.
- - - -
And just some background on why some people actually care about SMS with Hangouts: I don't have a phone number with anyone except Google. My phone uses a cheap T-Mobile data plan with no phone service. When I'm at home, my phone is off and the tablet/computer is on with access to my voice/SMS stuff.
So it's a pain in the ass that Lineage 14.1 has this problem with Nexus 7/Hangouts.

[Q] Google sync not working on Kitkat

Hi!
Been having a bit of problems with the Kitkat roms for our device,.
Both the rom and Gapps install fine in recovery (tried with both an ancient CWM, and now latest 4ext) and it boots just fine, but cannot sync with my google account. The usual menu asking if I whish to connect this device to a google account doesn't show automatically like it used to in previous android versions (only the menu to add a cyanogenmod account pops up. Tried both logging in to CM and skipping it, with identical results), and adding my Google account manually tells me it's connected, but it is unable to sync anything (cal, contacts, gmail etc) to or from my account.
Opening hangouts gives me the message "Google Play services, which some of your applications rely on, is not supported by your device", but installing the latest apk of Google Play Services manually does nothing to help.
Play store is nowhere to be found, though for example Gmail shows up like normal (but only says "Waiting for sync" when opened).
Tried Flinny's alpha 2 and 3, as well as Cyankat 1.0 and Nevergone's version as well as two different zips with Gapps. All MD5 sums checks out correctly. Full wiped several times. 4.2 works like a charm.
Has anyone else encountered this problem before? Any ideas what I can do?
Thanks!
Hmm. I had something similar happen as well, though not this exact problem. I kept getting I think it was Google Play Services and something else I can't recall right now kept on FC, so nothing would sync even though it showed the little status bar sync icon. :/

Thanks for your reply. Can you remember what you did to resolve the problem? I'm all out of ideas here, I'll try anything! (yes I'm slightly addicted, okay? I can stop whenever I want.... )
Since yesterday I've tried to dirty flash 4.4 straight over my 4.2, without wiping first. Sync actually kept on working, but Play Store, Keep and Drive couldn't connect, although Gmail and Hangouts seemed to work as normal. I tried to dirty flash Gapps on top of this, but although sync reported that it worked, almost all Google apps FC'd immediately on opening, including Gmail and Hangouts.
Any and every idea is much appreciated!
I am having a similar problem with the CM11 unofficial build for the LG G Pad 8.3. I appear to be the only person trying the ROM having this problem. Any advice would be appreciated.

I eventually found out that my problems were caused by having the wrong bootloader (had the one for the G2, and not the DZ in my case, they're similar but not the same) which had a systems' partition too small to accomodate Kitkat correctly, causing the problems described above. So you might want to check the size of your partitions, but I'm not at all familiar with the G Pad, so unfortunately that's all the help I'll be able to give. Best of luck, hope you'll find the problem!

Chrome and Gmail crashing

So I have a blacked out chrome and Gmail installed and they both worked fine up till today. They won't open and just keep crashing. I flashed rom again twice after doing factory reset and wiping internal memory. After I rebooted the first thing I did was install blacked out chrome before anything else and it still crashed. If I install from market they work fine. I tried to clear data in app and it would still crash. I know enough about roms and flashing and how to do everything else with a tablet, so I'm not sure what the problem can be. Has anyone else have this happen to them? I also have both apps on s4 and they work fine. I just redid my whole tablet and the blackout ones just won't work. Does anyone have any ideas why they would crash now? Thanks
I was reading something that Google was changing some stuff around so the government can't spy on your stuff. Do you think they could have changed something on there servers so because I have modded ones maybe like the server knows so that's why they keep crashing?
Also I had a blacked out play store and now it just keeps updating automatically to new one. Before yesterday I had it patched with lucky patcher to not auto update, but for some reason the patch won't work anymore. It worked fine for months up until yesterday.
So I think it has something to do with my Google service framework. Can someone post there's so I can try to update mine.I installed a app yesterday and I think it might have messed mine up.thanks

[Q] Google Apps on fire phone

I'm wondering if there is anyone here who can speak to the stability of Google Apps (hangouts, Gmail, etc.) sideloading them onto the fire phone along with Google lay services. I'm really interested in this phone but am not sure if I can give up my gapps.
I've only had the Google Apps on my phone for a day. I don't use hangouts, but I do use Gmail and the Drive suite, as well as Maps. I'm using the most recent version of Amazon's OS.
Here's my take on some of the Google apps:
My Gmail isn't getting refreshing emails as fast as I'd like it to, though I'm not sure if that's some sort of issue on my side (connectivity or something) or an issue with the app (Note, while I'm typing this post, my Gmail just instantly got an email as soon as it was delivered and alerted me to it...). Gmail does nice little popup alerts and seems to integrate well with Amazon's OS, though.
Maps has some issues with road labels on the most recent version (seems to work fine with some older versions, as per a post on this forum somewhere). I'd consider this app a no-go for now, unless you don't need to read road names at any point. The Maps app that comes with the phone is good enough though (it actually looks a lot like a skinned version of Google Maps, without the social integration and "places to go" recommendations) and I've used it for a 2h drive already with no hiccups.
Drive, Quickoffice, Docs, all work well and I'm able to access, edit, etc, on my phone.
Chrome and Chrome to Phone work.
Google Play Music works for music downloaded on the device (unsure how it works with Google's cloud music service)
Google Play (the appstore) works and delivers updates to apps.
I can give hangouts a go, but I'm not really sure what to look for in terms of functionality.
Google Play apps install and run. I've tried Snapchat, Pixel Dungeon, Soundcloud, and some others. G+ login works, and your Google account is set up when you first try to launch the play services like it would be on a brand new stock Android phone so you get the same kind of Google account integration that you expect from Google's Android.
Edit:
I'd see if you can get some more info from other people... As far as I'm aware, installing Google Play and Google Services doesn't work for everybody. They have for me though, and I'm really happy with the device as it is now, especially considering what I paid for it unlocked.

if you're getting successful results then you should consider sharing what you did and how you did it so we can get the ball rolling.
Also you're able to sideload most apps (besides google apps) and they work normally? Im considering buying this phone with the current deal

I detailed what I did here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57161714&postcount=24
(Here's the post where I got the instructions from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57095260&postcount=9 )
I didn't change the directory where I sideloaded the Vending.apk, I just sideloaded it in with everything else. I don't remember if I briefly tried to install the Play store before without Google services, but that's probably why I had to adb install with the -r flag.
Before I installed Google services, some apps were working fine without them. Notably, Snapchat complained every time I brought it up, but ran fine. I would wait a bit for some more input from people... From what I've heard around here, it's just me and another guy (Aztecwarrior, the guy whose method I used in that thread) who have it working at the moment. I'd say you can sideload most applications without installing Google services.
http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/ is what I used to pull APKs to sideload before installing the Google services and Play store.
EDIT: I should mention that the Play store doesn't just deliver updates to apps... I've been able to completely install and manage applications through it; it works just as you'd expect it to work on any other phone for the moment. i.e., you don't need to sideload apps first to get them on the phone if you've installed all the Google stuff. Sorry for the ambiguity in my previous post.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
Another question: so far have you noticed that you've been getting a number of error massages/application crashes? I had previously installed google apps and services on my fire hdx and constantly received messages that various apps were crashing in the background, which I found super annoying.
Has anyone else had luck with play music? Does it work for all access?
Just a follow up on why I care about hangouts- I run all of my phone and text through google voice and this has been integrated into hangouts. I'm a cheapskate and can use the hangouts app to place calls and send/receive texts so I don't pay for minutes or texts. I'm one of the few people who doesn't care too much about missing play store, since I have the hdx, I've got a bunch of apps off of the amazon store.

No background crashes -- yet -- at all. I've also enabled background ANRs in the dev options, and nothing's popped up from that either.
I don't have all access for Music, so I can't comment on that.
I just installed Hangouts and gave it a cursory launch... It loads up, enabled SMS (loaded all my conversations from the Fire Phone's messenger app), has all my contacts loaded up to start a conversation. Is there anything specific you'd want me to try?
Thanks again! Glad to hear you're not getting the annoying error messages. I think this pretty much seals the deal for me.
On the fire phone, is it possible to change the default sms and dialer apps?
On last request.... could you give the hangouts dialer a shot? This allows you to place calls over wifi using hangouts.

Regarding default apps, everything is handled via intents (e.g. I set chrome to take all web requests)... when I enabled hangouts sms, I started getting texts to hangouts without being notified by the default app, so I think that much is configurable. The dialer, I'm not sure.
I'm in class right now (and pretty much until 9pm, and lots of homework), but I'll check hangouts dialer and default apps when I have time.
Did you root it first ,if so, did you use the same method as aztecwarrior?
No root. I used the guide that Aztec referenced, but not his exact steps. Check post #4 in this thread, the first few lines.

I've been using the Play Store, Hangouts, and Gmail off and on the last 12 hours or so. It's been rock solid for me. No crashes. Haven't found any missing features. Maps does seem to have some issues but haven't tried navigation yet, which is what I really would use it for.
Thanks to you all for your input. I bit the bullet and ordered one before the sale ended.
Now I tried the procedure from scratch (all apks uninstalled and rebooted the phone) several times with different apk-Versions (mainly 2 different links as d/l source).
My Play Store is always not getting any connection and I am not able to d/l apps from the store. Additionally, G Servies crashes every few minutes. I did follow the procedure like apk installation order, reboot, etc. No luck .
Btw. my fire phone is NOT rooted and is on fire OS 3.6.2.

Have you tried checking for a firmware update in the settings? When did you get your fire phone? I think the ATT/Carrier-bound FPs have some slight differences in hardware and firmware.

Hi snapplefish,
there is no firmware update available, when I am checking in the settings. I did get my phone from Amazon Germany with T-Mobile Sim lock (German localization - maybe that is why e.g. there is no 3.6.8 fire OS firmware available yet) early october 2014 when it was launched here. They sold it accidently for 10 bucks w/o a carrier contract.
Is there any hardware id of phone that can be checked? I could find:
Fire OS 3.6.2 (122009420)
Model No. SD4930UR
Btw., latest versions of Account Manager and Framework from my second phone do not install. Play Services 6.5 and Play Store 5.0 will install, however, no change compared to the older versions linked in the tutorials --> no 'my apps' tab in G Play Store.

You should be on Fire OS 3.6.8 if you have unlocked phone. I had some issues with some launchers, but the standard Google Now Launcher for the most part seems fine. Appstore is very limited and playstore seems to have a lot of tools...unfortunately it's going to be playing with some apps and seeing if they are stable or not. Battery Doctor, clean master, home switch, and weather & clock seems to work for me.

As I said, checking the update status does not provide the 3.6.8 version to my phone. It is not rooted and after delivery with 3.6.0 I did nothing else to the phone but update it to 3.6.2.
Only the new GSM unlocked phones come with 3.6.8 Sounds like you got your phone before this all happend therefore you are able to downgrade and root, your one of the lucky ones. You can get a AOSP feel to your phone if you want. Not sure why your not following those guides. Heck if you don't want to root then I'll trade you phones lol.
Gmail conacts
I am transferring my contacts to the FIre phone from Android. All my phone contacts are stored in Gmail(google contacts).
Now the problem is i am not able to find a setting option which would show only contacts with Phone no.
It is showing all contacts of Gmail, but i only need contacts with phone no there.
I had the same issue in Android 2.3 or something, when Android had an option of enabling the contacts with phone no only. Later on in Android 4 they moved to keeping all contacts but at the dialup i could search for only contacts with numbers only.
Any suggestion here. May be a different launcher or app?
Thanks
I received my phone and mostly everything is working. Google voice works, and automatically places calls using my gv number. Only issue I'm having is that the hangouts doesn't send sms messages over WiFi (but will over let) and the hangouts dialer has the same issue, I can't place calls via WiFi either. Anyone else find this?

Google Play Error 963

Been searching a solution with no luck. When I try to update, or download new apps, I get an error for the google play store saying "APP NAME" could not be downloaded due to an error. (963). I have tried removing my google account and clearing cache in TWRP then readding my google account, but it still doesn't work. Any help would be appreciated.
I'm in the same boat with no real solution yet,... I'm working on it though. Tried clearing cache and reinstalling rom to no avail.
If you say you reflashed and it still didn't work try a full format. The problem could also lie in your account. Try your account in another phone (if available) or try creating a new account. Also it's strange that no mention of this error (963) can be found anywhere
I just started getting this error very annoying. Running stock, not rooted, htc one m8
Sent from my HTC6525LVW using Tapatalk
I'm having same issue I can't download or update from the play store. I'm on an htc one m8 rooted s off running latest bad boyz rom. I never had the problem before til after I updated the Rom.
I'm getting this error too.
Is there any fix for that ?
I've also been getting this silly error lately. Seems that the connection keeps dropping the whole time and it constantly re-downloads the app/update. Just to have it throw out the error after a while.
I've got the updates to download eventually, after uninstalling the Google Play updates form apps in settings. After that it removed the generic Google Play icon from desktop/app drawer and replaced it with vendor.android.etcetc. At which point I could download the update fine but as soon as it started to install the entire Google Play crashed. It did this 3 times though, afterwards it installed the update fine and for some reason even the "Google Play" icon is back at homescreen/app drawer.
Don't know if it's a feasible solution but it worked for me to do updates. Seems like only HTC One m8 specific problem for now? I ran the updates at the same time from 4 devices(Galaxy S6 Edge, Note 10.1 tablet and a local carrier made android phone(cheapy in other words)). It worked on all of them except the HTC One M8.

You had the problem on 4 devices with the same Google account connected?? Have you tried switching to another Google account? Or have two added and changing the account?
I had this last night. I fixed it by uninstalling the updates to Play Store and clearing it's data/cache.
As an aside I had updated Play Store from APKMIRROR prior to this problem.

No, I said it seems like it might only be a HTC One M8 specific problem. I ran the same update on 4 devices(For a game) and the only one that had the error was my HTC One M8, all of the other devices updated all their various updates without any problems at all.
4 Devices, 4 different Google accounts. Only the M8 had error when updating.
Though by the looks of the post by Chris it seems that uninstalling the Google Playstore updates worked for him as well. Don't know if it might be a problem that crept in with the latest updates to M8 devices for Play store, but even if that is the case then I don't know why there aren't more people complaining about the same issue.
Just started having this particular problem as well. Had a similar issue earlier on but with a different error code and if I restarted my phone, I could download apps again no problem. Now, the only way for me to fix the problem is by uninstalling the updates to the Play Store. Wonder what the issue is.
Just trouble shooting here but, what kind of apps has everyone been having this problem with? I've only tried to download games recently and continue to have this problem. Every now and then one works. Gonna try some other kind of apps now and report back.
I'm also having trouble with the same error code. :/ I uninstalled an app and tried to reinstall it and this error code came up. I'm pretty sure last night several apps updated just fine though, so it's very strange. I'm just trying to download a free game that I haven't really had any trouble with before. I'm also on a m8. Clearing the search history and turning off WiFi didn't work.
Sorry to sound like a noob, but a couple people mentioned uninstalling the latest Google play store update but I have no idea how to go about doing this. Any help with that would be appreciated.
Update: Got it working again. I uninstalled the latest play store updates, opened it back up, got a different error code (906). Cleared the cache, uninstalled, opened back up and then it worked. Don't really know why.
Hi,
I had the same problem, too with my HTC One M8 (on Android Revolution HD 41.0). Uninstalling the Play Store Updates eventually worked for me. Though, for some reason I had to uninstall them twice. The reason could have been that at the first time, I had stopped the Play Store App previous to uninstalling the updates (only at the second time, when I didn't stop the app beforehand, a seperate uninstalling screen popped up).
Cheers
Update: It seems that it only worked for a short time. I could only install one app(which definetly didn't work beforehand) after about 15 minutes I tried to install another app which didn't work; however, when I repeatedly uninstalled the Play Store updates I could install the second app as well. Maybe the Play Store silently installed some updates in the meantime!? :/
Does anyone know how to prevent the Play Store from installing updates of itself automatically until the whole issue is fixed?
I have the same problem from today ,witch I think come from that I updated Google Play Service.
My fix
The way I fixed it was by deleting the files already downloaded (they accumulate after failed download to big amounts of memory) in ''HTC One_M8\Internal storage\Android\obb'' (you might want to delete updates from your Play Store app as well just in case).
name of the folder you want to delete might be hard to find but easy way to find it is by searching for the name of the publisher of the app you are trying to delete which you can find in play store on the app's page
hope it helps, good luck
I've uninstallled Google play store updates and cleared the cache, it is now fixed
error 936
I thing I found the problem. Some app put information on SD card. I remove the app information on SD card (move dack to internal Memory). Then I download the update. The update OK,no problem.

You are absolutely right!
I have experienced this weird issue after moving to SD a lot of apps. So to sort it out it is necessary to uninstall and then install the each app from the playstore or just move them back to the internal storage before updating.

Google Services Issue

Hi there,
I left my phone on (i927, CM11, 4.4.4) when I was away and when I returned, I noticed that there are multiple error messages. They appear all the time, even after a reboot.
These are the errors I am getting:
Unfortunately, Google Play services has stopped.
Unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped.
Unfortunately, Google Services Framework has stopped.
Also, when I try to log into Google Play , it says Authentication Required and won't let me retry to login.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Many thanks in advance!

Many thanks for the quick response! It seems that less errors are popping up, but they still do. Google Play still doesn't work.

I also had this problem since the beginning of February IIRC. I figured out what happened with logcat: libgmscore.so crashes the gapps process due to an illegal instruction. Asus TF101 users also report this issue. That tablet uses a Tegra 2 SOC, like our phone, and it doesn't support neon instructions, which the latest versions of the Play Services apparently use without bothering to check for proper support in the CPU. So, at least for now, the solution is to downgrade and prevent updates to play services. See this thread for details: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ee...to-fix-crashing-google-play-services-t3557521
It's been working fine for me since I did that, but I'm kinda appalled that Google is so reckless.
Edit: the right variant for our phones, if you're still on a 4.0 ROM, is 034. You don't need a system app remover, just uninstall updates for Google Play Services.

This sounds very promising, many thanks for sharing your experience and the fix! I will try it and post the results here.
I will also try to find out what gapps I have installed just in case.
Have this problem too

I had this problem too. I was running a custom ROM - Omni ROM 4.4. I also observed that everything was fine if I didn't update Play Services. However, some apps (eg current Gmail app) require it.
I have since gone back to stock ROM (ICS 4.0.4). The problem now is syncing issues. Not every Google service can sync. EG- Contacts, Keep, Calendar. _ they can't sync. WhatsApp and SwiftKey also cannot connect to my google account. That's where I'm at now. But at least, the phone is usable. It's the syncing problem that I was searching for a solution for and I saw this thread.

Late reply, but if you use Google Play services 10.0.84, as in the post I linked, sync will work again.
Update: According to this post, the issue will be fixed properly by Google soon. So get ready to delete those directories to allow Play services to update themselves.
use beta gps from here:

Hi all, many thanks for all of your responses. I didn't get to try Wr4i7h's suggested fix, but updating Google Play to the latest version today has solved the problem!
