Need help too much here it's confusing. - Desire 816 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK.
I have not rooted a phone and flashed a rom in a long time. Last phone i did root was the HTC Hero.
I now have the HTC Desire 816 a5_chl from virgin mobile.
I have rooted it and used the mod provided to allow write permissions. It is still S-On.
All I need to know is what Rom or Roms are available for me to Get Marshmellow on this Phone.
I have searched the threads and i have not been able to be completely sure if a rom is for the a5_chl. As i read through the threads I always see reference to
other versions such as a5_dug or others. But no deffinitive remarks saying this is for the a5_chl
Hope this message makes sense and If anyone could point me to the right rom or roms that would be great.
Thank you.

these are the stable ones, there was a sense rom but I cant seem to find it

There is also a couple of sense 8 roms floating around.

Installed CM13 all works well except 2 things get clock has stopped when booting up and if i boot into recovery the phone unmounts the sd card and it is not accessable through trwp recovery's file manager and it won't let me mount or pick sdcard to get zips

Thanks for the replies. Tried both roms they were nice but ended up going back to stock and rooted.

[Q] Root access to install apps to sd

Hi after spending about a week reading through forums I managed to change my friends HTC HD2 to android using the LEO "Stock" NAND Android ROM.
All went great thanks to the excellent instuctions on here.
I then put z4root on and app2sd and all worked great.
I then deceicded to buy an HTC desire for myself not the HD one.
However maybe I should have done some more reading first as I cant find a way to root device to install apps to sd card.
I dont really want to flash another rom as phone is new and under warrant. Can you root without flashing a new rom or somehow move them to sd
Have I just made a huge mistake buying this phone or is there a way.
All help appreciated thanks
How does rooting void the warranty less than flashing a custom rom? Don't answer cause it doesn't.
It is possible to root and keep the current rom, but if you want to enable A2SD then it's a lot of work (not talking about the froyo crap).
So if you want A2SD is suggest you root with Unrevoked and flash Leedroid. Don't forget to make a ext partition on the sd card before flashing.
Disclaimer: You are the only one responsible for you phone, no one else!
You can root the stock ROM as TheGhost 233 said. You can also use AlphaRev's S-Off as well on it if you wanted.
As for me, I couldn't be bothered with A2SD so I just S-Off'd and then used the n1table to increase my internal memory. The ROM I use uses bugger all in the system. Also, you can move apps to SD card anyway if you have 2.2+.

No, I don't think you've made a mistake buying this particular phone....seriously....
As for rooting, use the Unrevoked method which is the easiest....Alpharev S-OFF works too ( I think you can't flash custom HBOOT images if your phone has the latest PVT-4 NAND..better check on that..)
Here's the complete guide from the Desire Android Development section of the forum:

Thanks for the replies I am waiting on phone getting delivered today from virgin.
I will post back when I get a chance to have a look at it.
I got root using unrevoked3 but my phone is s-on
My phone is on virgin branded and I presume locked though not tried another sin in it yet.
If I wanted to flash leedroid Rom onto phone what steps would I have to do
I put on setcpu so that seems to have helped battery life but would like custom Rom on
Thanks

Hold on wait a minute you don't have to flash a new ROM at all your v-mobile phone should be on froyo (android 2.2) current software version 2.22.351.3 which already lets you put some apps onto your sd card at the moment i only have 3 downloaded apps that are on phone only mode.
[edit] you can also add downloaded apps from computer to sd card and install with Astro - Every one that i have done this with enabled move to sd and i still have 98mb of space to store more apps (even with the ones that are installed by v-mobile)
Thanks for reply yes it is on new update but I thought some of the modded roms were using less battery power so I wanted to know how to install one.
I have rooted using unrevoked 3 but i notice my phone is s-on
Just wanted to know if someone could advise me on the steps to do this or point me to a guide.
Will look at that astro as well thanks.
I have modinstall also
The issue you have is should things go wrong you can't return to stock as the Virgin RUU hasn't been leaked, so make a gold card now before you continue. This way, should the worst happen, you can flash the generic HTC RUU to get back to stock
Then look at custom ROMs using A2SD+ - most do it these days but best to check the ROM thread in question to make sure. Then partition your SD card and flash the ROM and you're good to go.
S-OFF isn't something you NEED - just means you can make changes to the OS without having to go into recovery first. If you're not going to be making a lot of changes bar a new ROM then leave that for now

This is what i was thinking and knowing v-mobile if you can't find a stock ROM to flash back to may have no warranty. That's the only reason i havent messed with mine
Early version (2.1) are about so you could downgrade using the guide on here but I don't know if it'd work (depends on the HBOOT)
Either way, a gold card is needed

New Wildfire S Owner!

Been a long time user of the Behold 2, Vibrant, SGS II, and now the WFS. I have installed CWM on every phone I have owned and used custom ROMs. I love the work the devs do and donate when I find a good dev.
I personally use the SGS 2, but the WFS is my wife's DD. I need to install CWM, find a sweet ROM (without spyware, great kernel, and themed ROM). Memory is really short on this phone, so my hope is that the devs use the 8GB card or have found other solutions.
Can anyone lead me in the right direction? The phone updated to 2.3.5, so I need the CWM procedure for that and your recommendation on a great DD ROM. Thanks.
You will find all you need in the stickied index thread at the top of the general section.
Thanks, trying to get S-OFF first. There is no file for 2.17.531.1. I am T-Mobile USA. My ROM is not listed and I can't find the correct RUU at HTCDEV.
All the January S-off videos are outdated...

Sweet ROM. Hmm, if your wife likes Sense ui then I recommend this rom. It is nice and fast and it has Data2Sd so it incrases internam memory to 2 GB max.
If she doesn't like Sense then there is CM7. It also has Data2sd
But you must have ex3 partition on sd card to get working data2sd. Here is how to do it.
And to install recovery, there are some tutorials. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1325730
Find CUSTOM RECOVERY section.

First create a goldcard (search google) then you can install any ruu with a software number higher than yours from htcdev.
You don't need s-off
Awesome. I have followed the steps to unlock (S-OFF). Now to install CWM and choose a ROM. Thanks for your help so far guys!
Having a hard time rooting the phone. Used a few programs and Unlockroot says failed to get shell access. Hmm.
CWM is now installed!
Since I have an 8GB card, I partitioned 2GB. I installed CM7, Data2SD, and finally GAPPS. She is rebooting right now. I will wait the 10 minutes and get her up and going. I'll let you guys know how it goes and THANKS.
Link2SD is better if you have a smaller, slower SD card. It's also more stable and easier to use. Btw, welcome to our forum.

need a little help

ok so a co-worker of mine has a Desire (CDMA nTelos) and one of his other friends tried to root it and flash custom roms. his phone works but very poorly. i need some one to point me in the right direction as to what i can flash and some info on what hboot is. i dont have a lot of time with the phone so trial and error is not a option for me. his phone is rooted and has clockwork mod and Hboot 1.06. i see lots of different roms with radios and dont want to flash the wrong one. i would like to flash the most fully updated and working rom i can.
i have lg g2x rooted running CM9 but his phone seems very different in methods used
thanks.
There are only a limited number of roms here for CDMA Desire. I think LeeDroid is one of them. Check the development section there's a pinned roms directory there. Good luck.
via xda app
Go here, then to CDMA section, there you have a few fine roms for CDMA. Plus search a little bit through the rest of the roms, a few if them are for GSM+CDMA.

[Q] M8 GPE Roms won't install

I recently bought a M8 Google play edition. I unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP and rooted it. I then tried to get s-off, but firewater would not work. At this point I tried to install a sense based stock rom to try firewater again or to get an OTA update and upgrade my firmware, no dice.
Any rom I try to install just hangs at the Google logo once it reboots from recovery after install, ViperOne M8 even errors out when installing. No idea what the issue is, I even made sure that the roms I grabbed were compatible with FW version 2.12/2.22. I would like to upgrade the firmware but that's not possible without either s-off or a stock rom.
Any help would be appreciated, I am a pretty experienced android power user and have even helped build some Kernels for 2.2 back in the day, but this is the first device I have had this sort of trouble with.
Additional info:
Model: OP6B17000
CID: Google001
my firmware version is 2.12.1700
Bootloader is "Unlocked" and "Tampered"
u cannot flash sense based rom on GPE device there is reason i think system partition
if u really want sense u can get s off with sunshine i guess through its not free (if fire water dint work)
otherwise stick to GPE .
Then why would I have trouble installing roms that aren't sense based? I should be able to install a Tom regardless of s-off.
The idea of paying for sunshine bugs me. Afraid it might not work.
post above is correct ,can't install sense based roms,
what other roms have you tried? anything AOSP should work fine. make sure you wipe and start fresh in you're installing a rom..remember first boot up will take quite longer than usual but shouldnt surpass more than 10 mins at most.
I have tried ViperOneM8 2.5 and 2.2. And several sense based roms. I'll try cyanogen mod and sky dragon next.
Any suggestions for AOSP roms with lots of customization?

Dirty Unicorns. The whole reason I started flashing roms was bc of the customization. I've flashed about 95% of the roms for m8 and I keep going back to DU.
Flashed dirty unicorns last night to great success. Thanks a ton
Now I'm having other issues but that's rom related. Just glad I'm no longer on stock.

sunshine does a check to see if it will work before it makes you pay... you only pay if it will work

help not sure what to do

So ive successfully installed twrp,Supersu and rooted my m9, i then flashed android revolution rom and no longer have an imei or service its all unknown. Although in my bootloader it does show the correct imei and info. Please help, my phone is a tbaytel/rogers canadian phone. My download mode reads
Unlocked
Htc_himaulatt PVT S-ON
LK-1.0.0.0000
Radio-01.01_U11440801_96.01.51207G_F
Opendsp-15.6.1.00522.8994_1026
OS-3.38.631.2
Anyone have any ideas it boots into os fine, bootloader and recovery all work too. Have the original case with the original imei on it. Phone new never been out of the otterbox. Have a lg g3 with the same network and everything if that helps with dumping radio info. Im sort of familair with adb and fastboot. I didnt have any issues rooting it or flashing twp.
Which firmware was it on when you rooted it?
Sent from my HTC One M9 using Tapatalk
Havent changed the firmware as far as i know i just rooted flashed twp and flashed the rom over. Forgive me if im wrong im not an expert. But that os on my bootloader when i googled the version comes up as stock rogers canadian. So i assume maybe it didnt flash correctly or fully? Im not sure what you mean by firmware entirley off to work but ill google and try to find out for you tonight thank you soo much for your help. Also my phone is S-ON havent messed with that just was trying to do the minimal to get android revo working for the gpu tweaks.
If your device was on 6.0 when you rooted it you can only use roms that are 6.0 based.
If it was 5.1 then you can only use 5.1 based roms..
Sent from my HTC One M9 using Tapatalk
I had the most recent update pushed to canadian htc m9s that rogers had. Pretty sure it would be 6.0
Anyway i can find out
I also did a twrp backup but the system image dump failed to write to my sd but all the other files did. If theres a way to extract that info.
So i just tried my twrp backup restore it failed because of the system image thing but now im back to my old stock rom and my imei and everything is in there and it says android 6.0. It now reads i dont have a sim card in it unlike before in going to try and put it in and see what happens will update soon.
So everything works now. But no Android revolution any ideas what could have happened? I'm not sure if LTE works not going to be in that coverage area for a few more days but 4g works good and phone is running normally.
There's no harm in rooting the device if you need root but when it comes to flashing roms you're best investing in s-off.
It would seem to me that you probably had a firmware mismatch. You can only flash mm based roms over mm stock rom, Lollipop roms over Lollipop stock rom.

Well everything works now from my understanding I was flashing Android revolutions 6.0 version which matches my firmware of 6.0. Also is sunshine the only way to obtain s-off
My Android version is 6.0
HTC Sense Version 7.0
Software Number 3.38.631.2
Yes sunshine and $25/£18 is the only way to s-off. Sunshine works great but be sure to read twice, act once.

Sweet thanks would you mind detailing the correct way to flash a Rom onto my M9 I've read a bunch of guides step by step and ended up with that issue I described to you so. Lol
Follow the guide that comes with the rom or the guide will be on the support thread. I don't support rom flashing as there is no need to fix what isn't broke. Stock roms are better for me.
